Thanks for watching.
Thank you sooo much! Your video helped me to setup the front derailleur GRX 400 successfully 🎉 You saved my important gravel ride and now Im prepared. On top of that I feel now that I can do things like that by myself and understood that manual from shimano was so useless… I was so disappointed…
As someone who has worked for years on Tiagra and 105 groupsets, I found this tutorial very clear and informative as I venture into gravel territory. Thanks so much for posting.
This was way better than the Shimano dealer's manuals. Thank you!
Absolute Legend. Many Thanks. Bike delivered and not set up correctly. Cannot get booked in to a local shop for over a week. However after following your vid I am good to go now. I have liked and subscribed and commented and will also tell all my bike buddy's. Top Man!
Glad the video helped you out!👍
Had to readjust the front derailleur of my gravelbike, the instructions in this video were super helpful! 👍🏼
Thanks, your video really worked to set-up my derailleur properly. It cost me one and a half hours to get it 100% though. On my bike (Giant revolt advanced) the centre inside 2mm cage tensioner bolt is not serving any purpose. The bolt (if tightened) would be missing the frame entirely, so I had to skip this step. It resulted in a bit more fiddling around but in the end, the set-up is really satisfying. Thanks again!
Thanks for the detailed explanations. Especially the part about how to properly apply tension to the cable. I was struggling before you explained about the ring position thingy.
You're the apostle of cycling, sharing your Bible with us
This was hands down the best tutorial for this GRX FD
This video helped me loads! Was really unsure about how to do this, seeing how me and front derailleurs really don't get along always.
But now it's up and running. Can't wait to get out riding! Thanks alot!
Another absolutely brilliant demonstration of how to do things properly, this man is the best!
I wish you could do a few videos on servicing Brompton’s, there’s no one out there who does!
Keep um coming,much appreciated.

Two years late to the party,
Thanks mate. Appreciate it getting mine dialed in better. It's still not shifting super well into the big ring, but it looks like the front mech isn't aligned properly. Something to fix when I have some more time.
Just another thanks to you, and respect for details! Some words I just didn't get, needed to listen 2-3 times, but that's minor, and English is my third.
Nice, suspected this was never set up quite right on my bike from day one. Your walk through made it clear how it was supposed to have been done.
GRX 400 All works fine with 11 speed levers. Much like Tiagra 4700 does. Nice videos, well presented.
Thanks a lot! Just installed a GRX 400 front mech, and with the help from your video it was a breeze!
Very detailed and clean demonstration about how to do the job. Thanks a lot for posting :))
Thank you for this upload. I was only adjusting my front derailleur and really needed this to be able to adjust the cable. It saved the day. :D
Thanks so much for the video. I just got a Merida Silex 400 and I thought there was no front derailleur trim, but my gut said there had to be. The cable tension marker line adjustment was out and once I dialed it in, the trim worked perfectly. Many thanks!
I am in the exact same situation 😅😅
Thanks so much for your helpful tutorial! I have my front derailleur working perfectly now!
Gotta love these extremely detailed setup videos you upload! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, sir. That little link cover popped off while I was cleaning my bike and I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't stay on. I didn't realize the cable was routed under the other plastic lip. I can't see that at all in the Shimano PDFs, but this made it supremely clear.
Great video. I knew those lines had something to do with the fitting but had no idea until this video. Thanks!
Thank you. Excellent guide. Couldn't have done it without your help.
Thank you so much for this brake down! The best video on the topic! Much appreciated 👍
Thank you mate, you saved me a trip to the bike shop, I subscribed your channel!
Super well explained, you’re a genius! Thank you, saved my day & ride 😁
Great video, now I know about the lines and can try to get rid of annoying chain rub forever. Thanks
thank you so much! just received a cube nuroad that hasn't been tuned properly, you saved my bike! but i still don't understand if it's normal that it has 4 shifting positions but only 2 gears (the smaller steps before the derailleur actually moves the chain)
Thank you sir! Very detailed video and delicious accent 👍🏻
Thank you so much!! I finally was able to get my front detailer working well.
Great video! Thank you so much this helped me set it up perfectly
You've got me saying "nip it up." Very useful expression.
Great detail on setting up your front D. Thanks
Hi
I bought a Trek Checkpoint ALR 4 online. The bike was delivered completely fitted. But the front Derailleur is not properly fixed. Its touching the cage when pedaling on both big and small chain rings.
This video seems to be helpful to fix the problem by myself.
Thank you for the detailed explanation
Excellent tutorial mate.
Many, many thanks for this guide! You are great! :)
Never did get that cable tensioner grub to actually do anything. Luckily had an inline adjuster built into my frame which allowed me to make the necessary adjustments and line those marking up.
Excellent video, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the video, had to sort my mech out after a crash and the cable tension slipping. Unfortunately, I can't get away from any chain rub in the absolutely easiest gear, but everything else is fine with trimming. One question I can't seem to find an answer for is how close should these GRX front mechs sit from the crank arm? At the moment it's looking like 2-3mm on my bike with the mech a hairs-length away from the chain in the biggest ring/smallest sprocket at the back.
Amazing explanation! thank you!
hello thanks for sharing your wisdom, i want to start maintaining my own bike could you tell me please what make of tools as dont want to buy rubbish ones thanks
Well done on vid. Very helpful. Got my new bike from Evancycles. On collection they got me to sign the setup worksheet. I could only test the bike a few days later and of course they didn't setup the grx 400 correctly. The chain on the front derailleur was rubbing harder than a fat lady's thighs!
Really great video, thank you 🙏🏻💟
Great video with excellent attention to detail.
My only issue is my derailleur seems to jump straight to the low trim position. Kind of see it jump then if you click back up there is no movement in the derailleur. Any ideas?
great vid thanks for creating this really helped me out :)
Hi sir i tried lining up the lines one click from the top but when i change the FD to other positions and back at the position where the line should be lined up which is the postion one click below the top its not correctly lined up again is there something wrong with what im doing?
Did you solve this?
Hi. Thank You for Your thoughtful explaining video, I adjusted my FD correctly first time according to your video, however, now i had to readjust it and found that cable tension screw won't work to align both silver lines when FD is on T-trim position. Could you give any thoughts ? Thanks
Love your video. Worked great.
I only have a question small question.
When I shift down the chain shifts but rubs the inner side of the derailleur and I have to push the shifter a second time so the derailleur goes to position without rub.
Is this normal?
What might be the problem?
One thing to note is if you're setting up a used derailleur i.e. not one out of the box, you need to make sure the H screw is wound in so the pivoting top section doesn't lift up. Otherwise when you've tightened the pinch bolt you'll find the cage won't move when you try to use the shifter.
Great video: works nicely on my new bike - except: I have a 9speed Shimano cassette/chain, which I thought would not matter as I am using friction thumbshifters - but it seems like there is some mild resistence/noise: Could it be this derailleur does not work well with anything except the matching 10speed cassette/chain?
well explained, thanks!!
Thanks for the guidance on fitting this! I need a clamp on adapter to fit the braze on derailleur to my bike, 31.8mm tube. Will any do or is there specific recommended one? Thanks!
Search for Shimano band on adapter for front derailleur!
Hello,
One more time thanks for your great tutorial.
I have a question, from factory my front derailleur was very high in my opinion.
The official Shimano technical manual say the gap between the top of the big chainring teeth and the plate of front derailleur have to be from 1mm to 3mm.
Using a 3mm allen key to fix the gap, i am ok with this gap of 3mm but the teeth close to the back of the plate are not at 3mm but at 0,5mm.
This difference of gap between the front and the back of the plate is normal in my opinion because the seat tube of my bike have a angle in direction of the rear wheel.
The shifting if perfect, there's no noise, i respect the rules of cable tension, respect the rules about alignment between the flat part of chainring and the plate of the derailleur.
I do all like in your tutorial and like the Shimano Technical Manual.
My question is if it's okay or not okay to have a gap of 3mm between the front of the plate and the top of big chainring teeth AND a gap of 0,5mm between the back of the plate and the top of big chainring teeth.
Shifting is perfect like this, no noise, no contact between any parts.
Thank you in advance for reply 🙏🏻.
I send to you pictures in instagram to explain better.
Best regards. (I hope my english is not bad)
Will this derailleur work with a friction downtube shifter.
It is said that the high limit screw usually limits the movement of the FD. In GRX400, it feels that the screw enables the shifter to move and pushes the cage more towards the larger cog. This confuses me.
at 8:00 you are saying that the rear end should be inside the chain ring. How exactly do you adjust it if it's way off? I tried pushing it but it's just moving back to its place. Please help.
I haven't checked out the grx sets in great detail. It looks like ultegra.
Super helpful thank you. Question: I cannot get chain clearance when front is on high and rear is on low. Is that normal?
The chain will rub on the cage if you’re in the largest chainring and the largest sprocket on the cassette. The same thing applies to the inner chainring and the 11t on the cassette!
@@FreeToCycle thank you, spent hours trying to figure this out.. Wish they were more clear in official user manuals. Thumbs up + sub from me
Thank you
hello from Spain, a quetion if I can of course , I have a Merida Silex 400 that is using this Shimano GRX 400, but instead of having the 46/30 I would like to upgrate to something bigger, like 48/31 or 50/xx, do you think it is possible ? or what I need to change to able this ? thank you -
Hi i bought carrao gravel G2 (grx400) 2 week ago I ride like 10 km but unfortunately front shift not working anymore what should I do
Can I run a 810 front mech and crankset on 10 speed?
Thanks!
Great video thank you. Getting some inside chain rub and lower limiter screw doesn’t seem to be moving it further inwards. Any ideas what might be the issue please? Cable tension?
I have the same issue. Hope for some info to figure this part out.
Also have the same issue. Have you found what is set incorrectly?
You can only alter the cage in one direction once the cable has been hooked up! You need to adjust the low limit screw further than it needs to be so as when the cable is hooked up you will be able to adjust the cage away from the chain!! If that make sense.
Thank You! :)
Hi there. I have a tiagra groupset do u know if this grx 400 will work with my tiagra 50 34 crankset? On shimano website they stated grx400 top gear teeth 46T. Thanks
Yes the grx 400 will work fine with Tiagra groupset!
Shifters are fully compatible but GRX shifter is 2.5mm outward and could be not perfect match for tiagra crankset.
great video... I picked up a new bike yesterday and rode it today for the first time.. (trek checkpoint with grx) .. after 10 miles, front deraileur will no longer shift out far enough to move chain to outer ring..... bit of a faff taking it back to the bike shop, so any idea what I should check ?
Cable tension issue! These derailleurs are very rarely setup correctly on new bikes! If it stopped working within 10 miles I would be taking it back to the shop!
@@FreeToCycle thanks for that.. Yes will definitely be going back to the shop this week.. Cable management up front also needs looking at as knees hit cables when out of saddle.. Thanks
@@chrisrees3872 I have the same problem, thanks @freetocycle for the info
Thanks for the great vid, am I the only one to find it odd to have this little RRR noise?
Grx is a pain in the ass to get enough tension on a cut cable 😂 was assembling a bike and had to adjust derailleur height since it was too high out of box.. had to add more tension, was pretty much impossible with only a few cm of cable to grasp and pull on.. pain in the butt
Thanks a lot! :)
Are you using GRX shifters or something else? I’ve got 5700 105, i know the GRX rear wont work but wondering about the front.
Using GRX shifters, the 5700 will work fine though!
So it doesn't look like there's a difference in the 400 and 800 grx front derailleur
Apart from one is for 10 speed and the other is 11 speed and the 400 is heavier!!
🖐🤓👍
I’m 5’1” what size frame do I need?
