    Early when I was a driver, I missed somone, well 2 people. I felt absolutely awful for like a week. Now I'm the boss and I tell people when it happens that we all miss people, go off route, etc on occasion. Not the end of the world, everyone will survive just fine (unless you keep doing it). I always find it fascinating to see other dispatching setups as ours is incredibly small comparatiely to most.

    I am a suburban train driver but before i was a transit bus driver. Seven years in buses really helped me when learning suburban train driving. They are very different it is also very similar. Stopping patterns in the bus were all done via memory or handwritten cheat sheets. Today, i have a computer screen telling me the pattern and making audio announcements to remind me of the stopping pattern. I have passed someone bus stop before. It happens from time to time and everyone has done it. Stations in suburban rail sometimes get missed. It so easy to do because some stations have a high speed approach (90 miles or more) and you really need to start breaking a half a mile out for a soft stop. It not something you want to do often because the company gets a big fine and looses all revenue from the trip.

    Those red lights get me every time. I’ll completely forget someone rang the bell and pass the stop 😂😂. I’m so glad our buses are housed inside a garage. I’d be mad about to pre trip the bus outside in the elements. When we clock in we get our bus assignment and track number as well

    4:55 That’s something unique on buses in North America, buses here where I lived don’t have these numbers on display. However, trains where I lived had a similar feature, and I believe they served the same purpose, to help those responsible for bus/train scheduling identify which departure of the day this is.

    I was riding a Santa Cruz Metro bus up to UC Santa Cruz one morning and the driver passed up a few stops, one of which had A LOT of people, and yes, the bus is supposed to stop at every stop. Also he was driving an artic bus that wasn’t even full. I wonder if he should get in trouble or something cause that definitely doesn’t seem right.

    This happened to me last night. The woman requested the stop while I was at a very long red light. For me, that's the worst time to request to stop because I'm just sitting there not doing anything for upwards of a couple minutes and I can forget that someone rang for a stop. Anyhow, I felt really bad because she was an old lady in a walker and it was really late and very cold. She was rightfully pretty upset and all I could do was apologize. I offered to call in to see how long the bus going in the opposite direction would be in case she wanted to wait on the other side to catch it to go back a stop. She was too upset with me and didn't answer.
    On the other occasions where I've passed a stop most people are pretty chill about it.

    • @pugmalley
      @pugmalley 6 місяців тому

      Had that happen at a light that wasn't long at all. Problem was it was a fast light so only 6 to 7 cars could make it through at a time and when the line up waiting is around 20+ it is easy to forget.

    I can honestly say I never missed a stop but on a few occasions I deliberately passed a stop and dropped the passenger at the next stop. We were only allowed to stop at designated stops and if a stop was blocked by construction or an illegally parked vehicle you got to walk back. It was a question of liability.

    Not long after I had started, we were doing a private hire with a pick-up in London. It was using two rear open platform buses and the driver of the bus I was following was driving through some deep puddles at the side of the road, (as it had been raining heavy) trying to get the conductor wet, who was standing on the platform. What he did not see was 2 people who were in a dark raincoats waiting at a bus stop, who stepped forward to see the route for the oncoming buses just as the bus went through a large puddle. A big wave of water went up the side of the bus and the people at the side of the road must have been splashed with the big wave of water, then as when I came past just behind, they were shaking their fist looked very angry. I can laugh now, but at the time I did think we might get into trouble. He did not know what he had done until we stopped later in the day. As for going past a stop, it wasn’t unknown for drivers to go past the drinkers queue outside without stopping some of the pubs late at night (Biddy Mulligan's being one of them) as you knew there would be trouble from the drunks.

    Ouch, really sucks to accidentally pass a passenger. I actually rode SacRT for the first time the other day, only the light rail and not the buses. The light rail has surprisingly high ridership compared to similar systems such as VTA. All the trains smelled like piss, weed, or cigarettes lol, I feel like BART is cleaner generally. That being said, the trains were surprisingly busy even during off-peak hours and I even got my ticket checked which is extremely rare on BART or Muni. The blue line down to CRC is also really fast compared to Muni light rail. Not a bad system, but I really wish SacRT received more funding to run better service. Frequency and service after 9 pm is pretty terrible on both the buses and the trains.

    The complementary face mask thing cracked me up. People really thought a box of face masks sitting on a public toilet-er-I mean *bus…* with everybody’s fingers been all over them was gonna keep them from getting a communicable disease. 😂
    When I miss somebody’s stop, I apologize profusely. Rarely do they ever get huffy. If they do, I just sit there and say 😑 “Uh-huh” as they rant, because to apologize and explain only adds fuel to the fire. Then at the first pause in their rant, I smile and say 😁 “Have a nice day” 👋. They rant some more, I say “Uh-Huh” some more, then smile again and wish them a nice day. They finally deboard, and then stand there giving me the death stare as I drive away with a big smile on my face. Thats how I come out on top every time. I make mistakes just like anyone. It’s not my fault they can’t be chill.
