Five Steps to Landing More Fish

  • After the interview I did with Marshall from Midcurrent a few weeks back, one of the viewers asked if I could provide some tips on how to land fish on light tippet. I decided it would be best to answer this question in video format and show the steps I use to land as many hooked fish as I can. In this video I show the five step process I typically use to convert hooked fish into netted fish.

    Devon, all of the previous comments say it all. Catching fish is a process...thank you for the knowledge to be successful landing fish. We spend $$$ buying material, many hours watching video and tying our favorite flies, but we rarely spend time figuring out how to be accomplished at landing fish. Thank You Devin.

    Thanks, Devin. Great video and instruction. I have used your "rod low" method since taking up euro nymphing in early-2019; however, I didn't get the angle of the rod until watching this. Can't wait to try it. Incidentally, I don't go with guides very often but when I do it is always frustrating to have them yelling "tip up". Now I can forward the link to this video to them if needed. ;-)

    This is a public service announcement. With how many anglers and fish are caught on highly pressured waters, this video is helpful to fight fish efficiently. It puts so much less stress on the fish and they get released back into the water quickly. Also the euro style nets make it much easier to land and keep fish wet while unhooking, untangling, etc. I've seen Devin put the brakes on a very large calico bass headed back to his home in the rocks. He is a master at putting a maximum amount of pressure without tugging or yanking on the rod to move fish closer. If the fish is BIG and it moves 1" closer and the angler keeps the pressure on, the fish will usually keep moving in that direction if the pressure is steady and smooth. Smooth and steady pressure with the rod is an important aspect as well. Thank you Devin!

    Devin, again I thank you for these tips! They really have helped me land more fish. Today gave me an appreciation for the lessons you gave in this video when I saw a young dude lose a beautiful rainbow due to him raising his rod tip straight up causing the fish to jump out of the water and off the hook. He had no control of the fish.

    Great Video! I'm new to Fly Fishing though I have been fishing for a very long time. Lots to learn. I have been catching a lot of fish but I did have two larger trout "eat my lunch". The first situation was when I was in about hip deep fairy fast water. I hooked the trout and it immediately went down stream spinning off line in the process. I jumped and did some acrobatics but was tiring out. At this point, it's about 50 feet away from me and I'm starting to make my way to it. But, before I could get 20 feet away from it, it's flattens out in a fast riffle and throws the hook.
    The second instance was at a log jam. I never saw it. It bit under heavy cover and went further into the cover to the point where it almost jumped onto land. The issue I had was it went under the tree cover and I had two nymphs on (I recall a #8 Scud and #16 midge dropper). Well, it seems like the other fly got caught up on something and I lost that one too. It did take out some line (maybe 7 feet).
    What strategies would you have used in these situations or what would you have done to stay out of them altogether?

    A great summary...thank you! How would you handle a large fish on light tippet where there are lots of weed beds the fish head for when hooked? I'm thinking of places like the ranch section of the Henry's Fork in Idaho or various western spring creeks.

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  4 роки тому

      I would still use the same basic steps. However, whenever there are bottom obstructions (weeds, boulders, rocks, etc.) you obviously have to make angle changes to keep fish away from those obstructions. With full weed beds, I tend to quarter my angles upward a bit more instead of just upstream or to the side.

    After 40 years fly fishing ( I took a 15 year break when I was young and dumb) I have used Covid post lockdown to Euro nymph for the first time and about every second day. I love it I found however that I was losing far more fish than any other method. Your video gives a new skill set to work with. I would argue that the euro rig makes this downstream set upstream play even more important than standard rig. What do you think?

  • @dukeramshaw818
    @dukeramshaw818 4 роки тому +6

    Thanks Devon for the great information.
    Question: what about hookset and rod angle for those fished hooked downstream vs upstream? I tend to let my tightline setup swing downstream of me to get a long drift (often feeding out more line), and have hooked many fish this way as the nymphs rise at the end of the swing. With a low rod, I set the hook to either side of the fish as setting the hook "downstream" isn't possible given the fish is already downstream of me. How does your sequence work in this situation? I realize the best situation is for the fish to be upstream of me when I can then set the hook a downstream motion, prior to the nymphs drifting past me, but that situation doesn't always materialize as planned. I ask this question as I tend to lose more fish when hooked downstream than upstream, and usually not right at hookset but after a few seconds of fighting the fish.
    Keep up the great work Devon! Duke

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  4 роки тому +6

      duke ramshaw I still set the hook to my downstream side. This has the effect of setting the hook toward the bank in that instance. I’ve found it works a lot better than setting upward or upstream which ends up pulling the fly right out of a fish’s mouth.

I usually have kept my rod bent upstream until fish's head is just above the water, above my stance, then release tension on the line and let the fish come back downstream to my net. I usually find a gap in the trees to exploit and try to follow the same strategy. I also squat or get on a knee to lower my rod tip below the trees.

    I find that the hook pulls out much more frequently when I have the rod angled upstream than down (low to the water either way). This makes sense given the fact that the pressure is pulling the fly away from the fished mouth instead of into it. I typically try to get a fish slightly upstream of me and have the rod angled downstream. The fish mostly swims away from the pressure...until it doesn't and I need to race after it, especially for bigger fish. What am I missing on having the rod to my upstream side that is resulting in more lost fish? Do I need to wait until I am level with the fish? Is it a matter of the angle of my rod (not sure if I get to 95 def and definitely want to test that out)? I mostly avoid having my rod upstream of me to not lose fish and it is definitely a hindrance to my fish fighting. Thanks for any advice.

      crichH20 it’s hard for me to know without watching you. All I can say is that if you follow the steps and specific angles I share in the video, experience has shown me it is the best way to land the highest proportion of the fish in the quickest amount of time. It is possible your pressure is too high or low or your angle is too little or too much. Another variable that could be factoring into your situation is your hook choice so you may want to look into that as well.

      @@tacticalflyfisher3817 thanks for the response. I will have to give things a try next time I'm on the water.

    Interesting. What do you do for big fish like steelhead or salmon?

      It's very much the same except that the rod, tippet, etc. would obviously be different.

    Can I ask what the name of that river was it looks like somewhere I have been recently

      Joshua Gundersen sorry but if I felt it was responsible for me to share the name of the river I would have done it in the video. I maintain a pretty strict policy of no names in my videos even on well known water.

    Question: I remember seeing in Modern Nymphing how you said to stay below the fish but I didn’t see that in this video. How important is it to move down river in order to stay below the fish?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  4 роки тому

      Braden Thornton it’s important which is why I talk about bringing the fish upstream of you to net it. There was a fish on this day where I demonstrated the need for it but it’s going to go in a follow up fun fishing video.

      Tactical Fly Fisher My question more refers to is it important to stay below the fish during the entire fight and move down river to stay below it if it moves downstream? Thanks for the video, super helpful!

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  4 роки тому

      Braden Thornton yes. It is important to stay even or below the fish if at all possible. You’ll see the example I’m talking about when I put together the next video.

      Tactical Fly Fisher ah ok, just a quick question. I’ve started early this year short nymphing with a floating indicator. I started with a echo rod shadow 2. It’s been a great start rod but now I want a more premium rod and I’ve looked at my local dealer at a hardy ultra lite 9,9 #3. But compared to my echo it has a normal action in the tip, will that be a problem when short nymphing or just a new feeling? One of the things I’ve like about the 3cho is that I can put a lot of pressure and not risking the leader because of the soft top and do a hard lift on the takes.

      To get closer to the fish without being in their cone of vision and spooking them.
