Man, those metallic speed paints look better than I imagined. That gold in particular is really nice. The silver looks like it went on a little too light or over white. Gonna have to try some of them. On a different note: those new MK 3 sculpts in Death Guard colours are just perfect.
I've only got a couple of the metallics from the 2.0 set, but honestly, I'm dead curious to pick up another couple and see how they perform. They aren't *quite* to the same standard as I'd get from an acrylic base, shade, and highlight... but damn. Good enough for army work!
I love this, consider this experiment a success. You can pipe in a bit of music during the parts where you're not talking much if it bothers you but otherwise its not a big crime to have the occasional pause.
I’m doing my entire Necron army with Speedpaint 2.0. I haven’t been disappointed! I never knew you could mix the strong tone with Speedpaint medium; I need to try that!
I love this quick scheme! My only suggestion would be to prime instead of black, a dark yellowish brown, to get that death guard rotten look and keep those few areas that don't really catch the brain matter beige looking good (the front armored flap under the arms is very noticable to me personally)
I'm the weirdo playing Loyalist Death Guard, so the rotten look isn't really what I'm aiming for. ;D True that I did miss that bit on the front plate, but that's more about being a bit lazy with the primer than the colour, I suspect!
If only i could have seen this video 3 years ago.. how much time i would have saved painting up my death guard army. Great video! Your tips about mixing washes with medium have been a big game changer for me
For the time spent this is a ball tearer of a result. Beyond tabletop ready IMO. I see some armies which stretch the tabletop ready definition for tournaments to the extreme (3 colours). You'd actually be proud of this mini!
In my experience, a torn ball is a negative result! 😂 But yeah, the 'three colours and a base' thing is more than a little outdated when you *can* paint an army this easily.
As always, a joy and an education watching you paint. I really hope you make more videos using Speedpaint... The fact that I recently dropped a lot of cash on them is purely coincidence. Top work Speedpaint Guru!
Pretty darn good man for 20 minutes! I still prefer the old mk3's. But I am warming to these guys a bit. I have been using some of the old heads on the new mk3's and it works better then the new heads. Awesome vid tho 👏
This was very helpful and the figure looks great! The lifting of the base paint by the shade was something I had not seen before but I will be on guard for it the next time I paint. I need to get the Speedpaint Medium as I have the Quick Shade Medium but I too find it to be gloopy. Thanks for sharing this
Yep! That's exactly what I've done on the previous versions of this method. I skipped it in this case to save time and cut out two paints from the list.
Amazing job! Love the look. But... why is it that I've just discovered Marine Juice and another paint is getting discontinued/ changed?! Looking forward to an update to your Marine Juice replacement!
I don't know that I'd say there's a best; same as with the various acrylic lines, it's a bit of a 'best tool for the job' situation. AP Speedpaints are a bit more forgiving over flat armour and have a slightly smoother application, while Contrast tends to have stronger pigmentation, and Xpress work best with a little pre-shading to accentuate their colours more. If I had to pick a suggestion on which brand to start with, though, I'd point to Speedpaints as the easiest to work with.
Nice video and very helpful indeed, thank you! I will try to paint my Blood Angels in that manner. I hope it will help me to decrease my pile of shame. I would have thought of Black primer and Whraithbone from the can as a base coat, that should be rather similar to your choice. Or should I go for Red spray? But should I choose then a brown primer underneath?
Blood Angels I'd definitely do from a red primer, and use regular acrylics for the black details and metallic instead of the Speedpaints. Similarly to how the Death Guard have very little ostentation, so too will regular Blood Angels infantry usually have very little extra stuff to paint! One primer which will work quite well under red would be something like Fur Brown from Army Painter. That's a warm brown, almost a deep skin tone. It won't contrast as sharply as white over black, but it'll give the red primer over top some real richness that'll look great.
I’ve never used contrast or speed paint before. Is there a specific benefit to buying speed paint instead of contrast or vice versa? Great video btw :)
The price, mostly! Speedpaint's cheaper than Contrast, and performs pretty much identically. There's a couple minor differences and some colour matching between the ranges isn't entirely possible, but they're a very good choice.
Thank you as always; May you briefly explain the different effect when using "AP Speedpaint Medium" versus "AP Quickshade Medium" with the "Strong Tone Wash"? Will one provide less staining/more recess shading than the other? etc. Your time and consideration is appreciated and welcomed.
Nah, that was definitely the brush. I've absolutely *drenched* Speedpaint in stuff before and been quite vigorous in working my shades into all the nooks and crannies - ordinarily I'd be using an AP Monster Brush or a Citadel Medium Shade Brush, and I've had no problems with it previously. It wasn't something I anticipated being a problem since it wouldn't usually come up... but sometimes we learn new things about our tools! 😅
The bottled Vallejo airbrush primers can also go on with a brush. Just a touch of water in them and it's better, same as with any other paint, to apply two thin coats of them rather than clogging detail with the primer.
Interesting! I got the speedpaints 2.0 megaset and I haven't got the hang of them yet. I simply cannot tell which color is which; the labels are mostly useless and "out of the pot" the colors look way darker than they actually are. And I simply cannot tell vibrant from muted colors, making every color choice a random one. I've seen Dana Howl paints her bottle caps because of this, maybe I should do this.
Isn't it funny how the saying 'more haste less speed' is opposite of what you want? Haste is when you do something in a hurry, with excess speed. Whereas speed is just speed with no negative connotations... :) /pedantmode
Nope! Unless mentioned specifically, they're all straight from the pot. I tend to use them with an eye to the coverage and a solid finish where I can, but thinning them is occasionally super useful for lighter finishes, glazes, or even glowing.
"This isn't very special" - promptly drops a superfast method simple enough for even journeyman level painters to produce a squad in an evening. Yeah, that's a not very special one.... 😂
I kit bashed all the old bits onto the new torsos and they look proper smashing. The new heads really are too small for my liking, though I love the aesthetic.
@@axanax2534 yeah I feel that the head of a space marine needs too be big . I mean I don’t want like a bulbous suntaran potato helmet . But still you know .

Great video mate. Would love to see you do more like this, especially WWII, Napoleonic, or Ancients figures.

I think people are surprised what can be done with Speedpaints. Great video!

Top work Speedpaint Guru!
Good one, thanks!!!
Great video. I’m still not really sold on the speed paint metallics but you’ve done a good job.
I'd still stick with typical acrylics for anything I want to be in a front rank, but honestly? They're really growing on me for these bulk troops.
A live paint and chat stream would be great.... interaction with your audience in real time
I don't like the spikes either! I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Rad. That was super fast. What color is the base rim and sand? Thanks again for posting another fantastic tutorial!
base rim is Dryad Bark from GW
Stirland mud base texture, drybrushed ryza rust and eldar flesh.

Try using a small bit of sponge and brown paint to chip the edges, maybe white stipple under that to get a 3D effect… try that, you’ll like it.

I’m paint my HH Deathguard following your recipe, just having a bit of fun.

I had no idea speed paints had metals... absolute game changer
Vince Venturella put out a video this week testing a few of the Speedpaint 2.0 metallics on several different primers to compare and contrast.
I wanna make a raven guard vs sons of horus with a unit of word bearers cause I really wanna paint some. Gonna use your techniques!
Great video Troy. So do you think Army Painter is the best of the three manufacturers of speed paint.
I don't know that I'd say there's a best; same as with the various acrylic lines, it's a bit of a 'best tool for the job' situation. Absolutely no dead air, you should consider the odd stream!
Actually looking on my tablet, scrubbing the gold off the edges, makes it look like a bit of edge highlighting

Yes, speedpaint medium gives you less staining on raised areas / more flowing to the recesses. Quickshade medium is a little more even in coverage.
Brilliant video. Is Speedpaint that fragile or was it just bad luck?

Do you know of an undercoat paint that can be Hand Painted as opposed to Spray paint’s 🤔🤔🤔

It's the brush that comes in the Speedpaint set. Basecoat brush, I'm pretty sure it's called.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio Thank you
I think it looks great except for the speckled zenithal layer which just ruins all the underneath sections and the arms etc. imho.
