"Far Cry" is the opening song from Rush's eighteenth studio album "Snakes & Arrows." The album was recorded in five weeks during November through December, 2006 at Grandmaster Recorders in Los Angeles, California and Allaire Studios in Shokan, New York with co-producer Nick Raskulinecz, a fan of the group who was praised by each member for his approach and technique. It was released on March 12, 2007. After their R30: 30th Anniversary Tour ended in October 2004 the band took a one-year break, during which they agreed to start work on a follow-up in January 2006. It contains the most instrumentals of any Rush album, with three instrumentals within the album.
Lee's main bass guitar on the album is a 1972 Fender Jazz model and, at the insistence of Raskulinecz, used his Moog Taurus bass pedals on all but two tracks, the most use since Power Windows (1985). A Mellotron is also used some songs, including "Faithless" and "Good News First", for an orchestral texture. Lifeson uses his semi-acoustic Gibson ES-335, a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, and a Fender Telecaster as the main guitars on the album, in addition to a custom built Garrison 6- and 12-string specifically made for the album's sessions, a Gibson Jumbo and 12-string acoustic, and a Garrison mandola, mandolin, and bouzouki. Peart performed on a "West Coast" drum kit built by Drum Workshop that he had acquired in early 2006 that was a replica of his stage kit minus the electronic pads. He was so satisfied with the kit, he had them shipped to Toronto for the album's pre-production recordings. After he had finished putting down the drum parts Peart informed Chycki and Raskulinecz that recording for Snakes & Arrows was the most enjoyable of his career and that the results were the most satisfying.
Imbued with the "raw sophistication" that Peart claims colours much of the album, "Far Cry" opens the album with a blast of twenty-first-century rock production, but with clear nods back to the band's earlier days: Lifeson's so called "Hemispheres" chord makes an appearance in the song just seconds after its beginning.
"Far Cry" is an honest look at the world as it appears from Peart's perspective. His youthful optimism has given way to skepticism. The world, with its madness, anger, and repression, is "A far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit. It's about how his generation started off great - concerned with peace and love - but in the end they ended far off. It also talks about the homeless and dependency on electronics. Nevertheless, it allows us moments of beauty and truth, and with persistence, we can continue to enjoy these.
One of the later songs to be written for Snakes & Arrows, "Far Cry" came together extraordinarily quickly. Lifeson explains that "It was almost like we already knew the song when we wrote it. We just played it." Peart's lyrics had already been submitted and were met with enthusiastic approval. When Lee came to sing them over the new piece, they were a remarkable fit, and this relatively complex song was, in essence, completed in a fantastically short space of time.
Guitarist Alex Lifeson said about the song: "It was almost like we already knew the song when we wrote it. We just played it. And that was really cool. That doesn’t happen very often. We were high-fiving and the whole thing, because it’s a relief when something like that happens, for sure."
The song evolved from a studio jam session between Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee. Neil Peart unexpectedly left lyrics he had just finished on the table with the chorus highlighted. Lee began singing the chorus along with a section of the jam and, according to him, it seemed to fit.
It was released as the first single from the album to radio on March 12, 2007, then saw a digital release four days later. The song peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. "Far Cry" was played on every tour following its release (Snakes & Arrows Tour, Time Machine Tour, Clockwork Angels Tour, R40 Tour).
    * When Peart was recording his drum parts on "Far Cry", Nick Raskulinecz suggested to solo over the "intricate syncopated" part at the beginning and end of the song. He later said: "Of course the only answer from a drummer is, 'Yes, of course I can,' but I would never have suggested it".
    Geddy Lee - Vocals, Bass
Neil Peart - Drums and Percussion
    Alex Lifeson - Guitar

    Pariah dogs and wandering madmen
Barking at strangers and speaking in tongues
The ebb and flow of tidal fortune
Electrical changes are charging up the young
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
And it's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it
You can almost feel the current flow
You can almost see the circuits blowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
    I can get back on
    I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
And the next it's rolling over me
    I can get back on
    I can get back on
Whirlwind life of faith and betrayal
Rise in anger, fall back and repeat
Slow degrees on the dark horizon
Full moon rising, silver at your feet
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
It's a far cry from the way we thought we'd share it
You can almost feel the current flow
You can almost see the circuits blowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
    I can get back on
    I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
And the next it's rolling over me
    I can get back on
    I can get back on
    [Guitar Solo]
It's a far cry from the world we thought we'd inherit
    The circle growing
You can almost feel the planets glowing
One day I feel I'm on top of the world
And the next it's falling in on me
    I can get back on
    I can get back on
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel
And the next it's rolling over me
    I can get back on
    I can get back on
One day I fly through a crack in the sky
And the next it's falling in on me
    I can get back on
    I can get back on
Oh, I can get back on, I can get back on

I am convinced that a Gibson looks better in Alex’s hands than anyone ever.

The greatest four note guitar solo in the history of Rock.

At first I thought "what he's on about '4 note solo'?" Then I listened more closely and now I'm thinking "Good spot!"...

@@DM-he1ug Alex was (still is) a perfect guitarist, with no need to prove anything to anyone. If he thought four notes would serve the song, that's what he'd damn well play.

Never heard about this song. Could hardly understand the words. The music took off when ALEX played some inspired and heart felt guitar, then the drums kicked in and the song took off. I need to see the lyrics. Lol...peace have a good one and thank you for posting

You can see the lyrics on the screen, just click on the CC icon on the video (if you haven't figured that out already). This entire concert is going to be Closed Captioned (Lyrics on screen) because sometimes the lyrics are hard to understand, especially in a live setting. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, David! Peace! ☮️

I am enjoying the ‘CC’ Dan.
Excellent track from the three of them.
Great bass, interesting guitar that Alex is playing and Neil is his usual competent self.
    Great work .

Cool! As long as people are enjoying the CC I'll keep doing it. I like it myself, as some of the lyrics I didn't really know until I started close captioning them. I think a lot of people like lyrics on the screen and a lot just want the vid. This way they can turn it on and off.
This song wasn't on my radar until working with it here. I now find that it tends to get in my head as it is a pretty catchy tune! Thanks, BD!

Did Geddy mean to say goodnight as they were leaving? Because their last song of that night was Working Man.

Bands do this all the time. They say goodnight to the audience, then the audience claps and screams for more, then the band does an encore or two.
