Yeah, exactly. And if you´re driving something like 300+ km per day (all these reviews and comments seem to consider that "normal") you should not drive an EV, in the same way that you should not buy a 2 seated sports car if you have 4 kids and a dog. Also: compare the claimed consumption of an M5 with the actual consumption when driven like in these videos (multiple launches and autobahn blasts). I bet you there´s quite a difference between claimed range/consumption and real life.

Very true, and keep in mind that EVs make much more pollution for being built vs ICE cars (just compare the weights). All the extra minerals and metals that have to be mined and transformed. Max. In a short road review you have encapsulated the utter dillemma of owning and running an EV. Especially a high performance one with 600 bhp like this I5 ! Yes, it goes like stink but if you use that performance for any length of time, your range disappears before your eyes ! Where is the fun or the sense in that ? Not sure what the manufacturers are doing here in pushing out these new EV's with lots of power and with incredibly exorbitant prices. . They make no sense at all. I have just watched a raid test by Harry Garage of a new SUV made by Lotus. Even the cheapest version puts out 600 bhp and costs almost £90,000 ! And this by a manufacturer who made their reputation by building lightweight, well handling cars that didnt cost the earth and many ordinary punters could afford. I am 76 years of age and been a car nut for most of my life. At present I run a Audi Q8 55TFSI bought new in June of this year. It is my second one and the firts time I reluctantly had a foray into the SUV world.....mostly because of ease of access for my aching old joints . I bought it mostly because I do an extensice road trip to Deutschland twice a year where I do some significant miles. Ok, it "only " has 350 bhp compare to the outputs that soem of the EV's are producing. However, even at average speeds of 80-120 mph on permitted Autobahns, my Q8 will give me a range of almost 600 miles. So, I can make my home in Hampshire, to the Eurotunnel site in Kent and then onto my firts stop just outside Dortmund with ease without having to refuel. It s a combined mileage of almost 500 miles. I would predict that I would need probably 2 and maybe 3 visits to a charging point to do that journey. That would probably put 2 possibly 3 hours onto that journey time. I really cannot stomach that much coffee and until newer technology is developed which substantially increases the range of an EV I will stick with my ICE.
Thanks for your comment. Good input and kind regards from a big Lotus fan and driver. It all ends with the Emira and I‘m sure they‘ll shut the Hethel plant after this. Lotus Engineering might survive, but that‘s it. The rest will be badge engineered EVs from China.
Good points but when I purchase cars I go by the 90 percent rule. Does it work well for 90 percent of my demands? So for two trips a year you could always rent a car. Lastly I would never buy an EV. With leasing, I’m not married to yesterday’s technology and especially with EV being in its infancy I think it could be a huge mistake
There are already EV's with 500 miles of range. The Lucid Air (100,000 euro) will get you your entire journey with 1 short (less than 30 minute) stop at a charge. There are certainly more to come in such a competitive market. Even a much cheaper vehicle, like the Tesla Model Y Long range, will get you there in 2 short stops. I have road tripped thousands of miles in my Tesla, never stopping for more than 30 minutes at a charger. I would hardly call 1 hour added on to your twice yearly trip enough of a downside to surpass the plentiful upsides of owning an EV. For 99% of driving, an affordable EV is much more convenient than a gasoline car.
I think the industry is too busy chasing performance and tech gimmicks in electric cars when they should be focussing on efficiency and range. I’d hate to have one of these.
Love my F10 530i on Autobahn today...comfy, fast and i love these analogue Instruments.. everyone goes to the right when i am in the Back mirror...crazy
I have noticed that most of the new 5/i5 reviewers are so impressed in their reviews and just a few mention the cost savings, it is clearly that BMW invest a lot of money to PR and reviewers, instead of investing them into the quality of their product. Also they have no interest to reduce the prices (they are even increase them) because they are selling their cars like hot cakes in China and US and they increase the profits for the share holders by making the interior cheaper (compared with G30).
You're absolutly right on every downside of electric cars in general and especially on this BMW. I don't understand why BMW has ruined their cars. Even the 5-series. It's sad.
It seems to me - just considering design - that there is some kind of disconnect between front and rear. I think especially the front looks much more like a (hypthotical) 1-series than a 5-series. Curious what other engine choices may be like (should there be a powerful Diesel, e. g.)
I think that generally a lot of people are loving to jump on the bandwagon and hating on this car. In actual facts, I am on several bmw forums and Reddit, and I see so many people buying this car and saying how lovely it is to drive. From the US, to Europe, lots of people buying this car because they love the the tech and the looks. It’s different. It’s unique. And some people love that. And it’s reflected in BMW’s sales numbers and that’s why they are not moving away from this design language. Hate all you want
Max, Love your honesty. I sometimes think I'm going crazy because everybody raves about EV's. I sat in an i5 in the showroom whilst waiting for my G30 (in service and was immediately hit by how cheap it felt inside and the boot looked smaller than my old 23 year old E46 I used to have. I also prefer the two separate binnacles for the displays. I manage to get 700 miles a tank on my 530D and once driving with efficiency in mind got 830 with it just entering reserve of 50 left.
I can relate. While waiting for an oil change on my G31 530D, I sat in the new 5 Series. The front of the car still makes me cringe, but spending an hour in person looking at it made it more tolerable. The interior is another story; I despise the large display, poorly integrated into the console. The comfort seats in my G31 make me dislike the new ones. Cheap plastic is everywhere. I'll stick with my G31 until the next generation. Also, I hope the electric car hype ends soon; I'm tired of paying double taxes for driving diesel with lower carbon emissions than a petrol engine...
You're not alone, i allocated one (i5 m60) back in sept/oct and I changed my mind. Glad i did. I purchased an x5 m60i instead. way happier than dealing with public charging and its nuances
100% correct on the China design part, it's not made for us Europeans anymore.. Also about the EV part.. We'll see how well the EU plans for the desired EV transition holds up in the upcoming 5-10 years.. I still don't see it happen as currently planned.. I think we'll need a hybrid transition periode first.. Also right about the i5 M60 being pointless.. If you want a EV 5-series, just get the i40.. Best 5-series overall would probably be the 550e, which combines best of both worlds.. Like I said, hybrid is where it's at right now..

I own a i4 M50 and love it so far. I have 11kW charger at home and since I live in Sweden we have a pretty good charging network for longer trips. As for the speed limit warning, it's a new EU law for all car makers for 2024 models to have that feature on every time the car starts.
The beeping when driving over the speed limit is an EU law. So it is the same for any make and model now no matter the brand. By law it has to turn on everytime you turn on the car.

I really, REALLY appreciate how straightforward and to the point you are with criticizing this EV, not beating around the bush at all. Majority of car youtubers look like they are doing everything to sugarcoat and not touch the subjects of obvious and glaring downsides of EVs these days. Reality with EVs as of 2023 is this - people will not switch to electric cars en masse simply because being on a leash of a battery is simply not pragmatic at all, unless you drive around the city and doing really short runs, and have a place to charge of course. And don't even start with this "battery revolution being just around the corner" nonsense... yea, I've heard that like seven times in the last 15 years or so. I really like Toyota's approach - full range of types of cars, ICE and EV to year 2050, and then we will see what happens. Free market, it's the customer who makes his choice. Personally I'm looking forward to developement of hydrogen (engines and hydrogen cells) and synthetic fuels in the next decade or so. Those two make way more sense than all this battery nonsense.
Hey, another grumpy grandpa here. It's great to see there are other people as frustrated by new cars as I am. Well, we will always have the 80s and 90s. 🙂
Major downsides of this EV: -slow charging (205kw) - small battery, short range - ICE based architecture, hence no frunk and yet still has a transmission tunnel The list goes on… if you want an EV, I’d look elsewhere… The reason it exists, is because of tax breaks in some countries. In Norway EVs are completely tax exempt, thus making them a lot cheaper than ICE cars.
Bellshill.. 2 years time, you'll all be saying how nice a BMW this is...I personally think it looks fantastic...a little bit out of the norm, like the e60.. But I do think it's nice. The g30 is gorgeous but, like most BMWs, the end up making the previous model look dated...not straight away, but in time....love the looks, although I'm hearing bad things about the feedback through the steering...ill wait to see.
That range issue is exactly what I experienced in my Model 3P in Minnesota. It's a total shitshow in anything but California. It's extremely frustrating especially when you go to work, let your car get cold, and magically $10 of range just disappears before you even go to lunch.
I'd appreciate a hybrid more over this. Now if I was a small business that dealt with luxury hotels to airport transfers on some exotic island then id consider a small fleet of i5 M60..😭
Spot on Max. Honest as always and who'd pay 140,000€ for that! Can't begin to imagine the R&D costs that have been invested for something not as perfect as it should be. Tensions must be high at HQ...
Guys, now we start with Chinese design, but in 10/15 years max BMW will be bought by some Chinese company and here you go the transition to complete Chinese car is completed. Re-read this comment in the future ;)
I just can't see who would want this given the charging situation. Someone who wants power or a drivers car will just spend their £130,000 on a real car and someone who wants a better electric car has so many other options unfortunately people will still buy it and that's why these sorts of cars will continue to be made. A very sad time for the automotive industry
I think regardless of anyone's thoughts on the exterior design or electric drivetrain, the interior is a serious downgrade. The material quality seems like such a step down from the G30 in any spec. No massage seats, no alcantara headliner, plastic airbag steering wheel cover, no leather dash, etc. Maybe LCI will fix these things.
I am fully convinced the head of BMW design department has some incriminating evidence of some corporate wrongdoing and is holding the entire company hostage.
One of the best reviews imo on this channel, ironically. It shows the practical and real world drawbacks and limitations of EV's from an enthusiast's perspective, not the cherry picked and meaningless statistics and claims that manufacturers and other "reviews" make.
Typically enthusiasts know you need to precondition your battery before charging in freezing temperatures. Enthusiasts don't care about real world drawbacks and limitations. No one who drives a Miata is losing sleep at night over the fact that they can't carry 4 people, they say "good, I don't want to give everyone rides all the time". What the average consumer considers a drawback or limitation, the enthusiast welcomes with open arms. That is what it means to be an enthusiast. You're just not an EV enthusiast. Which is totally fine, it's not for everyone.
@@myles6235 The drawbacks and limitations like having the rated power only at full charge *are* what prevent EV's from being enthusiast vehicles. The manufacturers aren't going to advertise or disclose all of those real world nuances, and neither are the reviews made by casuals for other casuals. If you're going to buy an EV as an enthusiast, then you want to watch a review of it made by an enthusiast, where you will see all the shortcomings.
@@aedgar Of course. Some EVs are better than others with that. BMW's IX is capable of full power launches from as little as 8% state of charge. My Model 3 Performance loses power beginning at around 50%, but dropping from 580 to 490 horsepower isn't really much of a downside. The car is already massively overpowered as it is. Out of spec reviews on youtube makes the most enthusiast centered EV content out there and he gets really in depth.
This is the biggest issue with Electric cars. They just don't perform in the cold. Gas cars perform just fine. Seeing these videos makes me want to keep my M440i GC for a very long time; I'm afraid to get something different.
Thank you for the honest review. Indeed, the electric setup is not practical for most individuals. It is designed for people who lead a basic lifestyle, residing, working, socializing, or essentially spending their entire lives in the same city or area. While there is a constant push for electric cars, I hope we can preserve Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) by transitioning to synthetic fuels and/or hydrogen-powered ICE. If electric vehicles (EVs) are the future, then the industry needs to address the range issue and charging speeds. Until these challenges are resolved: ICE it is.
Manufacturers don't listen to customers at all. Haptic buttons, digital climat control, futuristic (ugly led bar) interiors. I just don't get it. I understand that there are price limitations on some of those stuff or restrictions given by government but a lot of those things could be easily fixed. I don't think that actual development is an optimal business strategy xd
I agree with almost everything you said in the video. However, i would argue that the stated low range is due to your driving style. Just with all BMWs nowadays, the estimated range adapts according to e.g. driving style, temperature and so on. And of course if you drive it really sporty and drive fast on the Autobahn there is less range then „normal“ driving. Of course it may not reach the claimed wltp range but for sure more then you showed in the video. Otherwise great video!
I can trash my G30 530d and from a consumption on external roads of 7.5l / 100km it goes to at max 11l / 100km. Noted, driving from 130km / h to 200+ / 250km/ h runs. So yeah, trash it how you want and the range won`t drop that drasticlly.
So basically what they did is they took a comfortable long distance car and paired it with 200-300 km distance of battery, which realistically speaking needs to be charged every 1.5 hour. Still like that it's the same 5-series as the petrol one tho. Maybe if they triple the battery...
2.4 tons for a saloon car is MADNESS!!.....BMW's design language make's the current line up look cheap somehow. It's as if all the design budget was forfeited and they are banking on tech to sell their cars. As for EV'S , they're not saving any dam planet , if anything they're making thing's worse........Poor Show .
So basically the i5 M60 is almost as long, wide, and tall as a G11 7 series (and costs around the same), almost as heavy as an X7 M50i, and has tech that would be more appealing to a MINI Cooper buyer. BMW really managed the impossible, they killed their iconic sport business saloon. I guess now you have a good excuse for arriving late at a business meeting, the car took too long to charge :)

LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND TELLS IT ALL ... MORE CONTROL
Range is one thing. The time you spend standing still charging, when you really would like to be getting somewhere, is another…
I think the industry is too busy chasing performance and tech gimmicks in electric cars when they should be focussing on efficiency and range. I’d hate to have one of these.
Euro car makers don’t have the tech to get any sort of reasonable ranges, that’s why it’s all gimmicks

It's sad.
All These new Cars simply Don’t give you the same feeling like cars 5-15 years ago … I don’t have a connection to all these cars
It seems to me - just considering design - that there is some kind of disconnect between front and rear. I think especially the front looks much more like a (hypthotical) 1-series than a 5-series. Curious what other engine choices may be like (should there be a powerful Diesel, e. g.)
yea remindas me of a 2 series active tourer.
BMW can you please make beautiful cars again??😢
It is build for the Chinese market, now that i think about it, you are so correct. Now it makes sense
The G30 owners that said they’re holding onto their cars forever are making the right decision and I hope that hurts BMW so they come to their senses
That’s why I’ll hold onto my f11 forever. Or at least for as long as it takes bmw to make great cars again or I’ll switch so some other brand.
we need a 6.0 L, V12 again
Agree with you completely on electric cars.
There's really no benefit to them, the worse thing is that they don't even save the environment at the end of the day. Battery production is terrible for the environment
No car on this planet can sadly safe the environment, but to have a good benefit, we would need a instant switch now, not only to evs, but also to more green energy, like wind and water. Battery technology got much better in the last years, especially in the materials needed and recycling. But the general concept of everyone owning a car is sadly just not good for the environment. We have to build cities that are accessible without cars, and only use cars on longer ranges, we can't make a change otherwise
@@aftl_ryz8549 thank you, finally someone in these comments who gets the big picture! individual transport in the current form of cars cant ever be 100% zero emission. but bc right now our infrastructure is so dependent on them we cant just cut them from one day to the other. As for the speed limit warning, it's a new EU law for all car makers for 2024 models to have that feature on every time the car starts.
EU rules taking away our freedom again

I like the new 5 series. Idc what everybody else thinks of it.
I fully agree with you that the range is not enough for such an expensive car.
It’s ironic, the Chinese want to make cars for Europeans and the Europeans want to make cars for Chinese.
I just bought a G30 545e for about half the retail price and seeing this just makes me chuckle.

Review is spot on! You said what we all are thinking
Just bought the 2022 545e and couldn’t be happier
You can also adjust the amount of regenerative braking in a tesla btw
Major downsides of this EV:
-slow charging (205kw)
- small battery, short range
- ICE based architecture, hence no frunk and yet still has a transmission tunnel
The list goes on… if you want an EV, I’d look elsewhere…
The reason it exists, is because of tax breaks in some countries.

50 mins of charging in order to get 200km of real world range is an absolute joke. It's barely half of what BMW claim
Guys, now we start with Chinese design, but in 10/15 years max BMW will be bought by some Chinese company and here you go the transition to complete Chinese car is completed. Re-read this comment in the future ;)
Absolutely love this bima 😮😮😮😮
I just can't see who would want this given the charging situation. Someone who wants power or a drivers car will just spend their £130,000 on a real car and someone who wants a better electric car has so many other options
unfortunately people will still buy it and that's why these sorts of cars will continue to be made.
Looks like a Skoda in front👍
G30 LCI looks 150k more expensive than that lol
Simply put: EV isn’t the be all end all solution.

I agree with you 1000% on your opinion of EV's. I'll keep my gas guzzler Z06 as long as I can.
Out of spec reviews on youtube makes the most enthusiast centered EV content out there and he gets really in depth.

guys just dont buy electric cars. When BMW looses enough of money, they will go back to petrol ;)
This is the biggest issue with Electric cars. They just don't perform in the cold. Gas cars perform just fine. Seeing these videos makes me want to keep my M440i GC for a very long time; I'm afraid to get something different.
? Electric cars perform right after the start while ICE need 20 minutes to get warm ….
Spot on on your criticisms, not being harsh at all. If you don’t buy into the trend and look at it objectively it just doesn’t make sense…
I own a g30 M550i, the only new 5 series bmw I would trade for is the new M5 touring.
It still is a 5 series, but what they did to the interior is ??? We have a G30 at home. I’m refreshing this car and enjoying it !!!
