Folding Canoe Portage Trolley made from Recycled Materials. Strong, Stable and Lightweight.

- In this video, I will be making a new canoe trolley to transport my canoe and gear on long portages. I will be using recycled materials for the most part, reusing an old camp bed frame and bicycle trailer with just a few inexpensive bought items.
The problem with most commercially available canoe trolleys, is that they are just too small for a larger boat like a Canadian canoe. The wheels small, they are close together and they are designed to fit underneath the canoe, raising the centre of balance and making them unstable, especially on uneven ground. I wanted a trolley that grips the canoe, cradling it for support, and with larger wheels that are positioned on the side of the canoe, providing more support and stability.
I am really happy with how the trolley came out - it is strong, light, very stable, folds up for storage in the canoe and only cost a few pounds to make. A great improvement on what you can buy commercially.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching!

I think we all wished we were as handy as Simon.
Haha, thank you!
My dad was very simular to Simon the bloke. Simon is definitely a renaissance man for sure. Thanks
@@juliegogo2941 He sure is bud. My Dad is like this as well. He's an airplane mechanic and was always rigging up this and that when I was kid.
Did you consider a second UA-cam channel: Simon, a bloke in the shed? 👍
20:22 - Simon, a bloke taking his canoe for a walk. Great work!
I read: Folding Canoe...
I honestly think Simon could have several successful channels, but I can imagine the poor bloke has his hands full with this one !😂
Hahaha - one channel is enough!! 😂
Or just one channel: Simon, a jack of all trades and a master of many.
I don’t canoe. I don’t go camping. I don’t make things. I don’t cook outside. I don’t hike. I will never do any of this stuff. But, I still love these videos.
Ditto Julia! Love watching the innovation and love camping/canoeing vicariously with all my favorite outdoor Channels.
Brilliant! And Tom's bicycle didn't lose any bits!
I m off me trolley quite often too. 😂Nice build🏴
😂😂😂👍
Hi Simon : I'm looking forward to you towing this canoe carrier on the rear of your bike !!!.
Simon I've just been bing watching some your previous videos, the last one was about making a (door) for a 3x3 mtr tarp tent using your canoe paddles. please can you let me know what the length is, as I would like fabricate a couple of plug together poles out of broom handles or similar for bike trips. Many thanks mate.
When I was a kid, my dad bought an 18 foot aluminum canoe that I portaged everywhere. It was pretty heavy and I always wanted to build or buy wheels; but, there was no money or guidance for that. So, a kid learns to lift and shoulder the canoe. Now, I’m old. Smiling…. A lighter canoe and wheels, heh, heh…. Texas
Is there nothing this guy can't do? Damn impressive.
Thank you , Simon .
It is pepole like you that made England great . in there sheds !
🐺 Loupis Canis .
Is it just me or would everyone love to spend a day with Simon just to figure out how his brain works?
Pick me!
I know how his brain works, he's brilliant Plus his great love of the outdoors!
Brain overload 💣💥
No, not me. I wouldn't want to dog his heels.
I think the secret is cow pie and chilli..................
very creative, simple but functional, hug
Fascinating to see the thought process put into reality - and managing the ‘hiccups’ along the way - great vid 👍
Hmm. I have the same bike trailer sitting in my shed gathering dust for the last 13 years. And I need a canoe trolley, too. Thanks for a great idea!
That turned out super well, but who is surprised? I think this is one of my favourite 'shed' videos.
I am building a canoe trolley right now, using your video at a guide. We shall see how it turns out.
Simon, a bloke in his shed. New Series.
Home made canoe and a canoe trolly . Makes perfect sense .👍🏻 Sounds real exciting the canoe trip to Scotland .
Nice contraption 🛶✨
Great job! Glad you showed your miscalculation. Happens to us all...
Nice video, I'm sure Andy will appreciate your invention.
Appreciate another great vid. Here in the High Rocky Moutain Wilderness, "portage" means block n tackle , tree saw n a light weight kayak. May your feet be sure on the trail, your campfire warm at night and you trail tales be true!
I admire your ability to repurpose your materials.
That thing is amazing. You should market them.
Hook up behind your bicycle and go adventuring!
Great video. Keep it up!
A guided tour of the In the Woods grounds thrown in !
Wow. This is quite genius. It looks like it works splendid too!
One of the many things I enjoy about your channel, is that you mix up the content. Thanks, Simon.👍🙂🚣♂️
Another accoutrement to have with you on your August trip to Alba, as you'll be predominantly paddling, walking, sleeping near water, provided your bothered by flying biting insects is a product called Smidge, it was developed by Edinburgh University and contains a plant type extract which is far less toxic to humans then for instance Deet.
Any wind less than around 4mph especially if it's damp say, after a rain shower, will have clouds if the blighters swarming all over.
The Scottish Midge is well renowned for causing havoc in the right conditions !!
Obviously you can purchase a head net protector which also helps !
Remember too when paddling across Loch Ness to cast a few haggie into the water at various stages, (they run around the hills on short little legs, making them easy to catch) in order of course to placate Nessie and stop him chewing your timber canoe !!! 👍😂
“Anyone who says they like portaging is either a liar or crazy.” - Bill Mason...the older I get the more I agree.
That is soooo true! Good old Bill 👍😔
I made a frame (not for a canoe) recently out of ali box section. I found that with repeated use, the areas with the through bolts tended to squash in, so I ripped some pieces of wood to size and inserted short blocks into where the bolts went through. Stiffened the whole structure up considerable
Gordon here, I did something similar but with 2 motorcycle tire clamped to each side of a 12 ft al boat with ratchet strap to hold together and used them to go around a log jam till someone wanted more than me. then I could haul boat and motor & gas over land by my self .But fate must have like me and had the log jam gone next spring lol.
I copied this, w a few mods. Very happy w it. Will use to tow canoe w bicycle for self shuttling on rivers. Will send a few pics via your FB blog...
Saw your trailer in another video, great you have the build video. Cant believe I just split up 4 of these camp beds a few weeks ago, nearly threw the bits away until I watched your video. Happy days, new project ahoy 😀
A wheelie nice job. Looking forward to see you taking it for a spin out.
Thanks Simon. On the hunt for ideas to diy a trolley for my and my wife’s SUPs. Heavy bulky and we go places often a bit off the beaten track, although having seen quite a few of your excellent videos, perhaps not as off the beaten track as you. Love the trolley. Will give additional thought to your concepts. Love the light weight. Love using something you already have. I have lots of junk. Will have to search for alloy square tube junk lol.
Thanks again
Thank you very much for the film. The canoe trolley I bought bulges the bottom of my canoe and is getting on my nerves. I have to do the same as you. Great idea, thank you.
That turned out just fine. Great job.
Hi Simon. Beautifully engineered cart and it was a joy to watch you build it. Thanks for taking us along!
One suggestion for the axles, if you will load heavy or be going over rough ground, it would be a good idea to strengthen the tube where the axle passes through. There’s a fair bit of load on one side of that relatively thin wall tube there. One idea would be to cut a c shaped channel off the scrap from your x brace you already cut and rivet it on to wrap the outside of the tube. You could then get rid of that spacer washer and wouldn’t have to worry about losing that on the trail.
Love this, I seen quite a few vid's now people making these out of PVC, yet they not collapsible neither do they look as strong as you're build. thank you this best one I seen so far and once I able build my own kayak/Boat i will use this idea thanks again
And if you add something to the frame of that then at camp you have yourself a table/bench.. the item then has multiple purposes....
Or bringing in more wood for the fire
Great idea! 👍👍👍
discover your channel by chance and I became your fan....
Guessing your going pack some spare bolts, nuts, and straps just in case. Great video as always....
Northern woodman 1 youtube I think thats it Vonny is his wife, He does and clears canadian portages carries everything as I recall. Cool trolly. I still think you are Britain's new 007 man at best a real live 007. Thanks
You are a clever old stick Simon 🙂
I'd love to see you come up with a mechanism to peddle power the trolley so you can ride along in the canoe - now that would make me laugh! Cracking job as ever Simon - well done
Pedal.
I regularly see these cots at second hand stores, I think thanks to Aldi who flood the market with their special buys and subsequently the second hand market and sometimes still new. So will aim to get one as the folding bracket options on those cots make it a no brainer. Also, I reckon some old pram wheels would serve as a great alternative, although slightly smaller as they also have those axle and pin set up.
I know the trolley was a success on the Scottish trip. But may I suggest using heat (flame/soldering iron) to melt the ends of the cable ties to take off the sharp ends. A friend had ended up with six stitches when his screwdriver slipped when doing a roadside repair on his motorbike and the back of his hand caught the cut end of a cable tie on the frame it was like a knife cut.
Using this as inspiration to make a trolley for my new canoe. I don't have an old campbed, but I do have an old ladder and some box section ali.
Out~Frickin'~Standing.....Great Job....!!
Brilliant stuff as usual - really looking forward to see your vids from the Great Glen adventure. Visited Banavie & Invergarry in 2008 - beautiful part of the world!
A folding trolley with wide support - very nice! Have one of those cheap store ones & had that same experience, but not perhaps the same words came out of my mouth though...
Hello Simon. Iv’e been canoeing for many year as were always getting older the canoes seem to get heavier. LOL Your cot / canoe cart is hands down the best I have seen in the DYI .. Very good mate!! I just happen to have on too. Around Bend Oregon out !!
If its sturdy enough you may give it second purpose and use it as bench or table in your camp. Just add some nicely shaped plank.
That's exactly what I was thinking, too!! :D
Thanks Simon 👍 I’ve got the exact same camp bed lying around doing nowt at all.you are not my favourite UA-cam for nothing 😉
Happy building! 😁
Great design. Well done Simon
fantastic build !
i love turning junk/leftover things into other , more useful to me things !
FLAT WASHERS ! especially under those wing nuts . . . just a thought .
edit: truly , it couldn't have turned out better . should serve you well for a long time .
Awesome result I have one of those stretches for the tip and will retrieve it tomorrow. My canoe kayak hybrid doesn’t fit those trolleys well, you have inspired me to give it a go thanks great videos.
Must say one hell of a idea so easy to make just a little thinking and you got it made .I think it is a super idea as to it folding down and take down also.20 thumbs up here. Any thumbs downer are just LOSERS anyhow lol.
I had actually made 2 cart for my and my wife's kayaks. Not collapsible, but good for the camp ground. I believe I've found the design I will copy. It is the sincerest form of flattery, right😃👍🍻
Such a satisfying result. Can’t wait to see your travel mates’ reaction when you whip out the ultimate canoe trolley and effortlessly portage all your gear in a . Single trip. Brilliant work as always. 👍🏻🙏🏻
He should wait until they have carried all their heavy kit over a long portage way. That way they will gave the right amount of envy and resentment!
Outstanding, thank you for your design.
great help Simon !! I start my project trolley in the spring !! Thanks !!
Such a clever bloke.
Excellent use of that cot Simon 👌🏻, strong and robust, just the job 👍🏻 and unique to your canoe 🛶👌🏻 and like you say, will save you bags of time on your Scotland 🏴 trip.
Great stuff. As you said, not only does it work well, but it makes good use of stuff that may have otherwise gone to waste.
Great repurposing of materials and a great job!
Awesome trolley Simon I used these with my canoe but placed the wheels closer to the rear so when loaded didn’t catch the ground at the back end going up slopes , keep up the vlogs 👍
Brilliant Simon, you are definitely going to need it in Scotland. The Fort Augustus portage is really long.
You're quite the maker!
Brilliant! Thank you for sharing this with us!!!
That carriage is awesome! Nice work! Cheers
Make another cradle and put the sail on the canoe . Ride on land to the water or find a big car park lot and ride it around , that would be fun to watch , lol . Just saying Simon. Thanks for the video.
Waiting on the next one !
Dude!!! Holyshit! This is exactly what i was thinking! Just didnt think of using an old cot Geniuses! Im totally building one after deer season.
You are so bloody clever simon!
Great video I made mine out of a golf cart with the big wheels
Nice construction with a low center of gravity, the small one you used in the beginning is a real hazzle to use, especially if you try portaging with gear inside the canoe.
Simon you are going to load up this trolley the sails food clothing camping gear and be like we're do I sit 😂
Hahaha - that’s about right!
Great piece of engineering. Nice one.
Can’t beat a bit of up cycling 👍🏴
Great result Simon 👍
I love all your vids but these maker ones are so interesting! Thank you
Actually a really great design! And v neat folding storage
Nice engineering, sir. Great bit of kit.
This is great, and it folds up. You can make very nice ones with PVC and pool-noodles, but they don't fold...
He made it one piece at a time and it didn't cost him a dime, you'll know its Simon when he comes through your town...queue the Johnny Cash guitar.
Hi Simon
Hope you are well... What can I say.. Great job you will definatley need that trolley as there is quite a few portages to be done trust me.!! And that will be just perfect.. 👍👍👌
Ya can't beat a Simon build video, makes it look on so somple. Brilliant
Well done bloke! Love the ingenuity (pun intended)!
Great video. Next a harness for Maggie to pull it along.
Excellent job. Just needs spring washers to stop the wing nuts coming loose.
I’ve got a 16’ aluminum canoe, it’s HEAVY, something like this would be great,
Try twisting zip ties instead of cutting…… no sharp edges.
Thanks for the videos ✌🏼✌🏼😋
Nice little trolley there mate worked a treat!
It just amazes me that I, with no intention of ever having or using a canoe, could enjoy watching this entire video so much. Always a pleasure to watch a master craftsman! Thanks Simon!
Thankyou vm to teach us and sharing. Very useful, creatve like your house and wonderfull shoning green and bird's music. Health for you and yours !
Soon to be found at major outfitters like Cabals & Gander mountain. Great job.
Good work Simon love your videos keep up the good work God bless you.
DIY / upcycling videos are my favorite and you make some of the best ones out there! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work, Simon!
Very nice , my dad always told me I could do any thing that I put my mind to. You just proved that . Well done
That's a great design! Serial production, please :D It's amazing how poor trolleys there are available on the market.
I reckon you could find a dual use for that trolley... could you get a lightweight panel so it would double as a table at camp upside down? Just a thought. Great work, very clever recycling. Thanks for sharing.
