Mini luxury! Wood & Pickett Margrave from 1973

- What an astonishing little Mini this is, making a Mayfair look more like pure austerity. Originally a Mini Clubman, Wood & Pickett turned up the luxury to create the Margrave, while owner Roger has added a few tweaks of his own, including a sports exhaust and a 1310cc engine. The result is sheer enjoyment on a tiny scale.

The missing wiper test! ua-cam.com/users/shortsQhTpt2yEzC0?feature=share
This rear wiper looks a better size, than after market ones I've previously seen!
Imagine if your daily commute is 20 miles of twisty B-roads in this, with lively engine and exhaust noises and with this brilliant finish. I would be extremely happy.
Yeah, I have a Ford XR6 (Think Betty with a bit more style and punch) and I was seriously disappointed when I put it on a twisty mountain road and tried to push it! Compared to my long lost Mini, it was a nightmare!
For five years I had a 20-mile commute, each way, between Henlow and the AC Delco factory in Dunstable. I drove an ex-works 1071 Mini Cooper S along mostly narrow country lanes, with a couple of short stretches of A road and B road thrown in. It was an absolute blast! There were a few places where I would exceed 90 mph, traffic permitting, and after a year or so I knew every passing place and likely gate from where a farmer might back out pulling a trailer full of straw bales. And they did.
I've had the good fortune to own and drive some fantastic cars over the years, but no commute could ever be as exhilarating as that one. The job paid well, but the company sucked. I was actually sorry to be recruited and move away, but only until my 'commuting' took me travelling all over the world in different cars in multiple countries.
Occasionally I wonder what that particular cross-country commute would be like today. Probably awful, I suspect. Too many slow cars with even slower drivers clogging up some great lanes we once used for car club night rallys.
What a pristine car, a real credit to the owner who obviously loves his motor,I could sit behind that dash every day in those plush seats, gorgeous.
I think all the older mini's are better looking than new ones
I learned to drive in an original series Mini (sliding windows, cable door opener, huge door pockets). I’ve loved ‘em ever since and still remember the reg. JOK 8E
The modern ‘Mini’ is taking the mick, swollen+bloated - bigger than a family-size car from that era!
My 1983 mini was 41years old in feb
Sent my documents off in April
🎉 he is now classified as HISTORIC
Congrats. My '67 Mini Traveller is 57 - we have grown into old age together. And, yes, she carries historic plates in the province of Ontario, Canada. I hope I'm not going to need them for myself soon. 😃
@@coldlakealta4043It's great keeping a car for years,my youngest sister is the legal custodian of my late grandfather's 1966 Mini Minor 'woodie'Traveller,he bought brand new,ah the memories.......I my self have among other modern/new cars, a 1980 Capri I've owned since 1993 and a 1975 Triumph Dolomite Sprint I've owned since 1988, and a 1983 S.A.factory 3.0 V6 P100,my brother has a 1976 Capri he's owned since 1983 and a couple of 70's Alfa's he's had since the mid 80's,plus a MK1 2500 triumph estate( that desperately needs restoring)my father has kept two hulking great Ford D series tractor units he has owned since the 70's among other cars, tractors from between 1900-1970,a few motorbikes from the 50's,60's and 70's plus a 60's speedboat that he salvaged in the 70's ,it's in our blood I think😊.
".... sports exhausts, custom manifolds.... ", And chequered tape..., for that extra mph.
Thank you, that Mini is quite extraordinary.
Fantastic looking Mini, thanks for showing it. My first job after leaving school was at Hoopers in Willesden as an apprentice mechanic. I can remember Lulu having a blue Mini which had some work done as well as many other famous people. Great memories. Thanks again.
My ex girlfriend worked at Radfords in London, they did a similar version called the mini de ville she saw Peter Sellars come to Radfords to collect his.
Brings back sooooo many memories! The rorty exhaust, whine of the gearbox , it’s all there. Used to have a 1380cc, 12G940 head , twin SUs , and a 731 cam. Acceleration, incredible. You mentioned Downton Engineering, there was an eccentric character if ever there was one. Daniel Richmond knew how to tune cars though. His students were Gordon Spice who went on to race 3.0 Capris, Ralph Broad from Broadspeed Engineering, Jan Odur who became Janspeed Engineering , David Vizard who wrote various Mini tuning books , what a line up !
Martin , I gather Daniel's wife , April , was the formidable businesswoman and smelt ' money ' when his talents in engine tuning became obviously apparent .Issigonis , not an advocate of making his cars go faster , eventually had to give in under pressure from George Harriman of BMC , to adopt faster models and after a drink or three at the local pub that Daniel frequented , BMC Special Tuning came about.
I had a 1380 Avonbar engine in a Metro back in the late 80s; lightened and balanced, tuftrided crank/flywheel, omega pistons, gas-flowed, big valve head, with a 1¾ su on a swanneck and RC40 based exhaust. My that thing could shift, yet below about 3500 revs it was as docile as any shopping trolley.
I always wanted to try one in a mini but never managed it. I had it rebuilt by what turned out to be a cowboy and it blew up while still running in 😢
@@Roger.Coleman1949 quite right, I think Daniel acted as a consultant for BMC in developing the Cooper engine.
Wow! That must be the most immaculate vehicle I’ve ever seen you test drive. It is a thing of beauty
What a wonderful Mini! So green with envy.
I saw WP and had to watch this immediately; that's another place my father worked at, initially in Ruislip, then St Albans until they sold up.
The TV addition you mentioned was done by my father with a bit of help from myself to modify the TV to fit.
Brilliant!
The mini is said to be one of the most modified cars ever. I always loved the Wood and Pickett mini's as well as Crayfords as well as the more recent David Brown specials. The fact you could spec a humble mini as such a luxury item is so amazing. I think someone even had one with wicker doors (Peter Sellars possibly). They are just a cool little car for everyone. I'm lucky enough to own a 1969 mini Jem kit car and it basically uses mini mechanicals in a fibreglass coupe body and I love it for its bonkersness (is that even a word 🙂) thanks for sharing such a fabulous car with us all she's a beauty!!
Car is the same age as me!!! More shiny then I am though...!
Probably has less dents I would guess :-)
I like the Aston Martin Cygnet analogy. There are six of them on Autotrader at the mo. All over 25 grand. I had a good look at one at Oulton Park at an AMOC meeting. Great little car, great investment. Keep it up lad!
Hubnut doing what he does best. Welcome back Ian ..
Yes a great Hubnut review on the type of cars we want to see.
My parents had a Mini Clubman for a while, I thought the square front was a big improvement, I didn't realise that Issigonis didn't like it. You are right about the speed feeling, I did 50 mile an hour in it and it felt like I was doing 100!
Your videos on bizarre cars like these are top notch.
I worked near Earls court for a couple of months a few years ago, there was a W&P mini parked in the car park every day,I never got to see who owned it but it was obviously cherished. Nice find👍,that is a gem.
My wee fella gets picked on the 5th June to begin his work back on the road after 12 Years off. Honestly it feels like an early birthday
This car is in superb nick for a 51 year old car now in 2024 - Great stuff !
very very cool car
Now that's a CAR! Yes, I am a complete Mini obsessive for which I make no apologies. I saw one of these little gems parked in the street many, many eons ago and have wanted one ever since. Perfect video HubNuts. You just made my week.
One of the best things on planet earth: nearly everything is a matter of taste… 😊
Stunning love it👍🇬🇧
This video has made my day!
I’m a Mini Nut.
🚘👍🏻
It is a Mini Rolls Royce... So beautiful. There is nothing to fault on this car.
That’s beautiful! What a wonderful little car!
Impressive interior
I was 10 when I drove my Aunty clubman and the love never died since
What a fabulous mini. Love every inch of it.
My late godfather Ernie Boxall worked for Wood and Pickett and made the wood dashes for the mini conversions as well as being registered to modify Rolls Royce interiors.
I remember him saying that the design was a shrunken mk10 Jaguar dash with assistance from Smith's with the shrunken gauges. He also told me that BL would only supply complete cars as W&P would have preferred a shell and running gear.
Why am i now extremely jealous of a guy called Roger who I've never met. 😊 Partly justifies why I've always preferred the Clubman style Mini.
I had 11 minis in all. And I can say I loved each and every one of them .
I was never a huge mini fan but that had me grinning from ear to ear. I want one 😂😂 love the interior and that front end should've been the mini standard I think because its ace.
Ahhh, takes me back to my stage 1 tuned '76 Clubman pickup.
Brings back memories of my youth. Not that I ever owned one.
I saw one of these near Preston yesterday, it looked stunning.
It's a beautiful looking car, it's an absolute piece of art
Nice sound!
Leather is an integral part of Mini Clubmans. My Mam had an M reg and mopped the inside of the windscreen with a chamois every 5 minutes as we drove along. Eventually she delegated the job to me.
What an absolutely BRILLIANT little car!
What a glorious, glorious thing!
Superb! The closing shot exiting the roundabout was wonderful.
What a fantastic little car
Such a beautiful little mini. Love the styling of these wood and picket mini's.
I used to think that Mini's were overrated but they're aren't. They're more than just a car they're a true British icon.
Great review of a wonderful car 👍, love your knowledge & enthusiasm! Keep the reviews coming 👍👍👍
I think I have a new favourite amongst all the HubNut cars that have featured in test drives. What a nice little car. The interior is gorgeous ! It's like a spiritual ancestor to the Aston Martin Cygnet, but with more character.
Best Mini i have ever seen... Gorgeous
That interior is incredible! What a great mini. Thanks Ian (and well done to Roger)
I remember in the late 1980s the Foreign and Commonwealth office in London used a small fleet of black minis to shuttle documents around Whitehall. I had a friend in the diplomatic service who used to wait outside the FCO to greet the speeding black mini pulling up with papers from MI6 and take others to the Cabinet office etc. The days before email were more interesting!
And probably more secure.
Quite a nifty interior!
Fantastic last scenes. I love it
Nice. That is definitely the most luxurious Mini l have ever seen, beautiful
Absolutely wonderful car indeed. Love the original Mini.
lovely location you're at. greetings from west kentucky!
Cool car
Amazing detailed review looks like a lot of fun in comfort
A beauty of a Mini Ian and Carly, goes and sounds beautiful as well.
Yes my dad's first car was a mini Clubman wood trim trquis blue.
What an absolute pearl. I want one!!🤤
So, this car is like "Mini meets Triumph meets Fiat". Nice.
Great review of such an iconic car.
Absolutely brilliant 😊👌
Thank you, Hubnut 🤗
Wah! I want one.......😎
What a fascinating thing to learn about! Thank you, Ian!
Wow what a flipping beauty !! Ian your face is telling us the love you are experiencing behind that steering wheel !
Beautiful car and fab video. Thanks :)
Oh my word that is one beautiful mini. Sounded lovely. I saw a Wood & Picket Dolomite on Bangers & Cash a while ago. But the Mini is gorgeous.
Great review Ian thanks , love your classic format of how you do these
G'day to you ! Brilliant, love it, back in the late 60s myself and a couple of Mates bought a second hand Cooper S from the NSW Police, it was Light Blue of course but great fun to drive!
I never thought Hubnut would get so over-excited that he forgot to do a wiper test!!
Now live as a Short!
Wood and picket also did a dolomite sprint conversion both mini and dolomite are great
Well nice
Marvellous review Ian of a 1970s icon .Wood & Pickett aftermarket Mini accessories were a must for every ' serious ' Mini owner , espeially their full width front and rear chrome ' nudge ' bars with little round rubber ' doughnut ' protective buffers , the rears were like huge spectacles protecting the rear lamps and boot lid. Also , the polished wiper aerofoils as on this beautiful car, ' to stop lift at speed ' !.I'm recommisioning my recently acquired 1961 Austin Seven Mini and busy resourcing all those period extras.
Dream machine.
Oh, these sounds - deep joy! Had an Innocenti 1300 Cooper with balanced motor, LCB, RC40, etc. in the '90s. What a great little beast that was - did 110mph paced by a calibrated poilice car Omega we had, but at 6,000+rpm! Negative camber rear trailing arms and 165/70/SR10 Dunlop SP Sports meant it handled as well - much better than the '90s Cooper rehash that was deeply disappionting on its 12" wheels...
A good Mini is ike a driveable Jack Russell Terrier...
Absolutely fabulous, that's how my Mini should be if I'd ever own one 😍
Wonderful! Like so many others my first car was a Mini (though not this luxury car!) that my Dad bought for £250 in 1985. My sister passed her driving test in it and we both drove it all over the country. It was a terrific car, so assured and responsive. Great video, brought back memories of how much fun driving can be.
Absolutely brilliant video Ian miss hubnut ❤👍Waw what an absolute joy of a car absolutely beautiful vehicle brilliant
Lovely, recently discovered these were made. Fantastic.
Mini FTW
Loving this 👍
I'm not a Mini fan but that is glorious. Love the darker colour with all the chrome as I guess the chrome wouldn't pop with the bright yellow it originally was. Wondering interior as well and sounds good too. A credit to it's owner
That’s my favorite car you have driven, as being a mini fan and having a good few minis years ago. From 850 to 1340.
Wow, all of this new to me Ian, fantastic. What a cool car, the exhaust note is sublime 😎
I have owned two minis a 1986 red city which was my second car, and then an older 1978 1275GT. I needed to replace my first one because the early 20 ish Me did not think that I could ever run out of talent, if you get lift off overseer in a mini and you do not have the guts and room to keep your foot in then it will all go very wrong, very quickly! I still have a soft spot for all things Mini to this day.
"such is mini life" ... loved that comment. goldust that was to me.
my dads mini never was so posh. that is craftsmanship.
11:10 I like the Weezer reference 😅
Fabulous - love the 'coachbuilt' Minis of the '60s and '70s and this one is a gem. W&P's first Mini customer was the actor Laurence Harvey in 1966, they converted a Mk1 Cooper S for him and painted it gold, a little later they built a Mk2 Cooper S for him which was painted brownish bronze.
Brilliant … what a hoot … parp parp … Changing gear with facial expressions … Your grin got bigger as the revs rose through each gear 😂
My Australian Cooper S is now running a 1330cc and 113bhp. It's an awesome car when it's working perfectly
Wood and Picket Mini's -in the words of Tina Turner-"simply the best". I just love them.
I was telling someone the other day friends I knew back in the day
There specialty was de seaming the mini body’s they restored
What an interior
A luxury old Mini?! Thats pretty bloody cool.
Lovely little car 😃
Very nice 😊
What a glorious thing
I remember seeing a modified Mini at an Earls Court motor show in the mid 70’s it had two tone paint work in Champagne over chestnut brown with a 24Kt Gold coach line the carpets were Wilton and the seats I think were upholstered in green Drayton velvet. The dash was veneered in burr walnut and the rear seat side pockets had a small wooden insert on the top with a chrome plated clip for Champagne glasses. The rear pockets were designated as Champagne panniers which very much amused me at the time. Don’t know who built it it may have been Wood and Picket. There may have been an Allegro Vanden Plas in a similar colour scheme displayed along side.
