Woman with service dog claims restaurant denied her service

- A GTA woman has taken to social media to call out a restaurant, alleging they denied her access to indoor dining because she has a service dog. CityNews Reporter Brandon Rowe, speaks with both the woman, and the restaurant, to find out what happened.
Unfortunately that treatment is not as uncommon as people like to believe.
It is daily for many. Ignorance and an utter failure in the training of staff as a whole of the industry itself
They can’t ask for ID at all even if the dog isn’t wearing a vest.
You may be thinking of USA laws. This is in Canada.
BS
They can.
City TV, if you are going to cite the AODA then do so accurately! The restaurant is allowed to ask for the doctor’s letter that the owner ought to be carrying with her at all times when with her service animal.
@UCVSQDFsmR4vePouTwIdUMRg Under the AODA, an animal is a service animal if the animal can be readily identified as one that is being used by a person for reasons relating to that person’s disability, including where the animal is confirmed as such by a letter from a qualified “regulated health professional.”
@@ErinCourcelles mostly correct. I wrote this is a processing of thoughts and it's not an attack on you, Erin, k. So, I don't have to make my dog "readily identified". I can legally take my service dog into places of public access without identifying her as a service dog, meaning without a vest. so then for example, if my service dog and I go to public transit, the bus driver is legally allowed to ask me to then SHOW something identifying her as my service dog, at which point I flip up her kerchief which reads, "Yes, I AM a service dog", and legally, that is sufficient as identifying her a service dog. the woman in this clip already had her dog identified by the vest/harness the dog was wearing and the restaurant is legally allowed to ask for her letter. She should have showed the letter. And the restaurant had no grounds to ask her to go outside. Because legally, she only needs to be identified if I am asked to show it, meaning they don't have to wear the vests, and meaning that the ID cards are scams but when we say the animal must be identified as a service animal it doesn't have to be shown unless asked for it, and then I can be asked to show the doctor's letter as well. I wish the woman had just shown her letter, that is where she faltered in that news clip reported.
Next time they should get take out and stop this legal BS.
That is not the law. Service dogs are medical equipment just like a wheelchair you cannot discriminate
You’re so ableist
So a person who needs a medical device shouldn't be allowed to eat out like everyone else?
What about if a person has a physical disfigurement you find disturbing, should they be required to get take out too? Grow up.
So people like myself who have a disability and a service dog helps make everyday a bit easier, should not have the same rights as those without a disability? Ya I think not. We have the same rights.
Fire the employees
You can't segregate disabled people claiming "safety" That "spokes person" was horrible, that back peddling was funny. And you can tell he doesn't understand the human rights of this country.
Merely having a vest does not make it a service animal. Owners should carry paperwork. But if they are that traumatized maybe society is too much for them
Kindly educate yourself there are no paper works for service Dogs under the ADA nor can it legally be asked for.
There's no paper work
@@madelynpruitt9962 then there should be. Just because a dog owner loves there dog does not mean everybody does. Some people have allergies to animal hair. Some dogs drool. Who wants to be eating and have some dog in there face slobbering? But like I said earlier if a person is so traumatized that they can't go outside without fluffy then maybe they are not ready to be in society and should seek mental health therapy
@Tiny Princess that may be true. But some people have allergies. So they should be sick because some people have mental issues that remain unresolved
@Tiny Princess tell that to the person whose throat is closing up or the person who now is sneezing uncontrollably. Or the person who can't go to work because their eyes are so swollen. All because someone wants to take a canine where people are eating food. It's selfish
What a world we have created. People are so fragile they cannot function in society unless they are treated as "special"
these people are soft the restaurant offered to seat them outside but no it's to hot the "heat waves" in Canada are nothing there's heat that slaps you over the face when you go outside first world problems
So being disabled means we shouldn’t be allowed to live a life like people who aren’t disabled? My service dog saves my life every single day. I can’t live without her
@@ruthiesfight Physically disabled is one thing. But emotional disability?
How is being disabled and having medical devices being treated special

"No dogs allowed" fits me just fine.
was her dog vaccinated?
I don't blame the hostess. It's disgusting to have a dog where people are eating. Everybody does not want to be around your dog. Some people are allergic to dog hair.
Service animals are allowed no matter what others think. If someone is allergic the business must accommodate both people meaning they must sit both party’s apart from each other.
I feel the same about you.
Under the ADA, State and local governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public generally must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is allowed to go. For example, in a hospital it usually would be inappropriate to exclude a service animal from areas such as patient rooms, clinics, cafeterias, or examination rooms. However, it may be appropriate to exclude a service animal from operating rooms or burn units where the animal’s presence may compromise a sterile environment.
Anywhere open it the public a service dog by law is permitted.
you sound like an absolute tool. Did you even make it out of high school ?
@@blackhat5434 not sure what making it out of school has to do with the topic but ummm ill play along! You sound like one of these nasty folks that play with dogs and resume food prep without washing your hands. You sound nasty enough to let a dog who just licked his private areas lick you in the face. As a matter of fact you probably like that!
Oh man, America and Ontario have the exact issues. We too have issues with denied access. I was asked once for identification, but unlike with Ontario, we don’t have identification and it’s a majorly prohibited question by the ADA.
EMPLOYERS NEED TO PROPERLY TRAIN THEIR EMPLOYEES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SERVICE DOGS SO THAT BS DOESN'T HAPPEN EVER AGAIN
emotional support dogs aren't allowed in restaurants
Yeah, no wonder why they also needed a news story about it hahaha
It is because the dog has covid
Emotional support animals and service dogs are different things. You are correct ESAs have no public access rights and are not allowed in the restaurants but service dogs are allowed
Also emotional support animals do not exist in Ontario
This isn’t an emotional support dog. There’s a difference
Unless you're blind, you dont NEED a service dog, you WANT a service dog.
Wrong. I have a medical alert service dog, he alerts to be before I get lightheaded and possibly faint
You are very wrong. They're alert dogs that alert to seizures, cardiac conditions, and diabetes.
@@LeelaDanielsen exactly! Thank you!
Seeing-eye-dogs are just one variety of service animal (and not all are dogs). The OP is very outdated with their 1980's thinking. That said, there are a lot of people who fake service animals.
This isn’t true. I have so many disabilities that I can’t manage simply with medication or something. My service dog saves my life every single day! I need her
I like dog, but bring dog

A service dog is medical equipment legally. They are allow in restaurant and almost everywhere else except operating rooms or other sterile spaces. Service dogs are required to be regularly groomed by law. A service dog shouldn’t smell
no dog means no dog.
what do you dont understand about this?
Service dogs are considered medical equipment like a wheelchair and are allowed almost anywhere even non pet friendly places.
@@DaniAlexandria go on google and type "dog", be ready to be amazed.
@@Francois_Dupont go on Google and search AODA Ontario and educate yourself on the law. Be ready to be AMAZED!

Forgive my repitition of your bad grammar, figured you might only understand yourself.
Soon those who are unvaccinated will face the same problem. Private business is a business, take your business else where and let them rot.
Hard cutting news lol
Discrimination against those with disabilities trying to use their legally protected medical equipment and being denied so ALWAYS BE NEWS!
If they get seated beside a table that has dog allergies, do they get their own CItyNews segment to complain?
If it was too hot on the patio, she must be overweight.
Accommodations are required for both individuals up to the point of undue hardship, so it should be a simple matter of seating them in different areas, and asking the person who arrived later to wait until a table was available in a different area would be completely acceptable if someone said they had allergies.
Asking one party to leave without being served would not be acceptable.
I'm gonna get my pup one of them magic vests thur.......I wanna take her everywhere too.

Bringing your pets to a public area, evenmore a restaurant, shows a pure lack of mutual respect and civil conscience. I don't go to restaurants where animals are allowed. This is 2021, no one "needs" the presence of an animal. Why should the charter of rights exempt people with "conditions" from common courtesy.
Animals are allowed in all restaurants. It's the law in most of the world.
Service dogs are defined by laws in each jurisdiction, but all the jurisdictions allow them access to restaurants.
In Ontario, a medical professional must write a letter that the person carries with them to certify that they require their dog. Once that letter is shown, access is legally permitted to anywhere the general public is allowed.
Guess you're not eating in restaurants anymore... Bye Karen.
A service animal is medical equipment prescribe by a doctor. For example a guide helps blind people navigate the world. A medical alert dog can alert it’s handler to oncoming seizure etc. These dog are used to allow the disabled to live “normal” independent lives. The only lack of respect is coming from your ignorance.
You don’t need to go into a restaurant where PETS are allowed but SERVICE DOGS are allowed in ALL restaurant. THAT IS THE LAW. If YOU have a problem with someone’s medical equipment being in a restaurant be it a wheelchair or service dog YOU have every right to leave because that is a YOU problem.
“This is 2021, no one needs the presence of an animal” actually in 2021 we have more types of service animals that serve more purposes than ever before in history. So I would highly suggest getting used to it because service dogs are not going anywhere and are not going anywhere and are PROTECTED BY LAW! If you would like to learn more about the laws it is the AODA (accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities act)
@@johnscan6295 My point is that laws and liberties seldom promote mutual respect and common courtesy. It is much more popular to grant victim status to some at the expense of others. Sounds really sad when someone "needs" a service animal.
@@tynome63 you have no idea what sad is then. Having a disability does not make a person sad necessarily, but having a dog can be extremely freeing for people who have been unable to go out for years. One example would be a seizure dog, a person who doesn't know when they're going to have a seizure often can't safely go out because they could fall and hit their head, or stumble into traffic, or something else. No technology can help with that, but a dog can smell subtle changes in their bio-chemistry and warn them often a few minutes in advance of a seizure so they can sit down someplace safe. The dog will then help keep them safe until the seizure has passed. Even being with another human 24/7 wouldn't grant the freedom a dog does in that case.
My service dog will go where ever I go and require her assistance so that I can live more productive life. I didn’t choose to have a disability, but I do get to choose how to manage it. If that means having a 4 legged companion so be it. At least I know with her I don’t have to worry every 5 seconds if I’m going to to have a medical issue.
Dog not vaccinated?
Lol.....
Poor dog, has to be attached to an emotional crip crip. Probably would have been a great service dog for someone with real PHYSICAL disabilities such as eyesight.
Where did you get that this was an emotional-support-animal? 🤨 I heard nothing in the video about that. In fact, I heard nothing that indicated she _isn't_ blind (as if seeing-eye-dogs are the only class of service animal ¬_¬).
@@user-vn7ce5ig1z if you use your actual eyes this time and not your feelings you will see that the dog harness seen in this video is NOT for assisting the blind or someone physically challenged. Go ahead, look at the vid again (actually look) and get back to me.
@@bennyblanco2523 you are so misinformed it's actually hilarious.
1. Disabilities can be invisible, Mr. Blanco. 2. Disabilities extend beyond simply vision loss or hearing loss. 3. Service dogs don’t all wear harnesses, and the presence of a harness could be for several different reasons, not just leading the blind. 4. This service dog is wearing a vest, not a harness. 5. Service dogs actually do not need to identified with a vest or harness. The owner can be asked to show identification of the dog being service dog and the vest is that identification. ID cards are fake. The owner also needs to be ready to show the second piece of identification for the service dog which is a doctor’s letter, and the reporter of this article was wrong when he cited the AODA, the restaurant is allowed to ask for the letter.
