The best gifts as a child I remember and loved were hand crocheted mittens from my great grandmother, homemade patchwork quilt. The greatest gifts of all are health and family Spending time together.
Right we were happy with coloring books and crayons for the most part. As preteens my big gift one year was a camera, that was it. A guitar one year was on my list, a doll, doctor's kit, I bet my parents never spent over $50 for all of us kids ( 4) in the 70's. We all had bikes but they bought them used it was not a big ticket item under the tree. My goal this year was $25 or less per person for Christmas and same for birthdays.. I love the deal I have with my partner. We each decide something we want for ourselves and we give each other the same amount of money. So it works out to just buying something we want for ourselves. I got a espresso machine I've wanted for a while and my partner got a gaming setup. It was a good way to work with the most important person to me to make sure we got each other something we actually wanted.

this is why my grandparents handed out fruit cakes at Christmas, they learned from the other guys mistakes, 70 percent of Christmas gifts are recycled or returned for the money anyway. I use a cash back credit card and hold the cash back from Jan til Nov. I have a nice chunk since almost all of my spending is on this card. I have usually $450 to use for two children and one grand. Makes for nice, no-anxiety Christmas spending.
