Wherever you are, whatever the time of day, when this track comes on, it's just around midnight.
It’s always midnight somewhere
It’s 10:30. But yes, just close to midnight
Had this at my grandfathers funeral. Listening to it makes me feel like I'm lying on the floor in his living room and drawing with crayons while there is a faint but distinct aroma of tobacco in the air.
So poetic
God bless❤️
damn man. this almost made me cry. all the best.
I’m sorry to hear about your grandpa 🙏🙏🙏 may he rest easy
Beautiful memories…
Any time it's nice to listen to Miles Davis, but at midnight listening to "Round Midnight" is like being in the sky, close to the stars. Thanks.
How sweet is that. Exactly how I picture it.
Sounds nice at 3:47 pm too, lol. On my birthday revisiting old favorites.
That little interlude they do after Miles' solo and before Coltrane's --- starting around 2:42 here -- is one of the coolest things ever.
That little break with Red Garland hitting a few piano notes appears to be there to give Miles a couple of seconds to remove and stash the Harmon mute that was in his trumpet for the first part of the song---the phrase he hits next after that little interlude has no mute sound.
I was raised on Miles's music. Takes me back to memories of my parents and their love of jazz.
The world doesn't appreciate Miles and Monk enough.
It does
Miles died a wealthy man
Man you got that right!!!
Yuo have the reason, man 100%
I do, I will pass on my appreciation of them and Coltrane to my children when they are old enough to understand
Every music lover should own at least a copy of this masterpiece! 😍
I am so glad that we can share these heartfelt notes uniquely crafted notes….. Your father loves you.
InPeace,
Papi 🎉😢😂❤😇🙏🏾
Great rendition of Monk's tune. Miles Davis - trumpet, John Coltrane - tenor sax, Red Garland - piano, Paul Chambers - bass, Philly Joe Jones - drums. Recorded in 1955.
@pholzer5 ...'ROUND MIDNIGHT wasn't recorded in 1955. The title track was recorded on September 10, 1956, along with ALL OF YOU.
When I listen to Miles Davis I hear him talking to me through his trumpet
He is infact......Greetings from Italy
I'll never forget seeing Miles Davis in Seattle in the 50s -- this kind of music has stayed in my innerbeing ever since, giving me a nostalgic feeling in a loner kind of way.....
When I discovered Miles('80), my life accepted a new dimension. 42 years have passed and I'm still learning what it is. I found a love for Miles Davis, second to none.
I don't know but maybe I'm just an old soul.... I love jazz for some reason.... I am part of a rock band but Jazz is different......
A song that liberates the soul from the prison of sadness. However, in a cruel twist, it intensifies your despair. You recoil in the echo of every once-felt note. Never the same again. Never exactly the same. Turn off the lights.
Just had a coffee and was listening to this. It was the highlight of the day.
So glad my pops is a musician & named me after this amazing man. Pops n momz where either gunna name me miles or davis. But they chose davis . When i asked my dad how him n my mom got my name.. they said this man . Funny enough my sister was named after tasmin archer the british musician .
Monk said that Miles is the only one to cover his song and got it right. Nothing else to say.
@Bclarence765
...False!
@@brucescott4261 I read this in: Miles: The Autobiography: Miles Davis, Quincy Troupe. Miles had a massive ego, so this could be just what he said. I would love to talk with Monk to know the truth! However, if I could, that would not be my first choice of subject matter. Thanks for the heads up!
@@Bclarence765 ...I've been had Miles' autobiography over thirty years ago. I don't have to read it, anymore. Monk gave his approval to Birks,Yard, etc. long before Miles even recorded 'ROUND MIDNIGHT, long even recorded it.
11:45 with a cigar and an old fashioned on a warm spring evening. Top vibes
John Coltrane’s solo is so tasty and refined
It's 11:59 pm and I Am born...my real birth time....luv this...thnx Miles👌🏽🌹
Most of you Davisonians weren't even born when this classic LP was released on March 18th, 1957.
This record was together with Cannonball, Coltrane and Miles our most digged recordings .
Perfect winter weather for relaxing.
summer time after midnight❤ and winter
coltrane shows he can devote himself to a tune as well as improvise on it, supporting miles's dry trumpet with deep, long notes.
Lovely. Most wonderful. Everything! Timing, melodies, harmonies, a kind of grace, and impact when they get stuck in. Loveliness.
This is some masterpiece I tell you.
I originally heard this on my car radio sometime in the late 60s but could never get it out of my head
A enigma. Long friday nights I listened to these magic tunes. Wish they never end.
A landmark album, and one of my favs, but mainly for Coltrane on this one. In Miles' band, Trane was criticized by bulk of the jazz community at the time. That being his earlier period of 'finding himself' musically. But here, on Monk's famous ballad, he demonstrated who he would soon become. Must be his finest solo during his stint in Miles' band, and still one of favorite solos of his overall. It is beautiful! And maybe stranger still, he seemed to understand Monk's music more intimately than even Miles himself.
@DESKWERKSJB ...'Trane was still messing around with heroin and alcohol on this particular LP.
@@brucescott4261
True!
But, (I believe) so was the majority of Miles' band members around the time. Trane (and Miles) were addicted in the 50s, and both had the amazing strength to kick the horse, cold turkey, just not in time to prevent Trane acquiring the bad rep for unreliability.
often times joy in music instantly boosts a mood
I'd say most times.....
In the early sixties in my first job as a classically trained music teacher I had a few jazz 45eps (monk Tatum Davies Brubeck etc but sitting in my digs room listening to this (quite homesick too) will remain with me all my days.incidentally in the same UK area later one myself and my future wife experienced another never to be forgotten venture:Oscar Peterson Live in an early European tour.Included Hymn to Freedom although I was not aware of the title or it's significance quite back then
The first 33 seconds are so badass!!!
@Thomas Allison ?
..my arse has never been the same..
It was his gig at the Newport Jazz Festival with Thelonious Monk that got him in the sights of Columbia Records, his performance in the live gig, playing 'Round Midnight close up to the mic was what won him the gig.
"NO DIZZY, NO MILES!" -Miles Davis
A Classic written by the Phenomenal T. Monk performed by the giant of Jazz Miles Davis
Round Midnight is such a fun song to play and I love miles Davis' version.. very different again
Best version after Monks original. Miles is big maestro of emotions
@@zeljkosimac8548 ...Dizzy Gillespie's version was also great.
Brilliant. Named one of my sons Miles.
música maravilhosa, amo muito. thanks miles.
I shared your experience 30 years ago and led me to the world of jazz How lucky we are!

And I was reading the other day on reddit that Miles wasn't that big of a musician, that he was more sold for his coolness than other shit...god dammit, if wasn't for his music he wouldn't be shit. He is his music, nothig more. Man was a genius.
So smooth and pleasant...love it!
Ikr perfect winter weather
When one listens to Miles Davis round about midnight his mind is beyond the present or currents of problems
Love the change at 2:40 and then in moves John Coltrane at 2:57. Cool intensity worth waiting for.
The epicenter of jazz cool!!!!!
Bought this on CD sometime back and I think miles is so underrated. Every one should hear this
Dewey Davis the Third was a brilliant musician and a generous man.....
So lovely... Beautiful!!! Miles ❤️
little after midnight❣ 💕
When even Monk himself said.." yea, that's what I meant".

Notice the photo of Miles is printed in reverse. However, it's a great LP, which was originally released in mono (Columbia CL-949) on March 18th, 1957 (not March 4th).
BEAUTIFUL
Amazing
Beatniks must've loved this
A Popeye cartoon, beatniks in a coffee shop,a jazz band is playing,& they're all snapping their fingers saying "Cool,cool,cool......."
@@jerrywestermann4435 Lol. I don’t know why coffee shops are associated with Beatniks. All Beat writers ever seem to write about is cheap wine and “reefer”
