I too was in Hong Kong during Typhoon Wanda, I was aged 9 and my father was in the army and we were living in Sek Kong village in the new territories. it was quite terrifying, especially the noise. All the officers quarters on the top of the hill had their roofs removed. Our house too had stones embedded into the wall but apart from that we survived the storm quite well. My father being in the royal Engineers was one of the members of the clean up squad. Thank you for putting up this video, it certainly brings back memories.

I was nine years old living in Stanley, a tiny fishing village, when Typhoon Wanda hit Hong Kong. Many fishing boats were sunk or being piled up on the beach. Most squatter houses on the headland were being destroyed and many people became homeless.
Your photos bring back so much memories of the old Hong Kong.
I enjoyed every epic journey and adventure you documented, excellent quality in every aspect, Thank You !

I've loved every one of your videos Tony, of course mainly the ones following your yacht (ad)Venture(s)
This one however was quite special. I get the impression you have been documenting - if inadvertently - your life from a very early age. It's great to share a part of your life along with advents following a Typhoon in the early 60's. Now you've shared this video on UA-cam it will be watched for generations to come. I suspect you like that idea 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing 😀

I'm the same, I'm not rich, neither am I poor. I often dream about owning a Fleming, always without resentment for those that do.

Great video and account of a terrible and tragic storm.
I note CO2 was 317ppm back then so only 30 ppm above preindustrial and yet that storm looked way worse than anything recent.

I own an American Marine built Seawitch Ketch called Southern Cross, launched in Junk Bay in 1961, I recently sailed her from New Zealand back to Hong Kong. I also have some pictures of her being built with a local shipwright prominent in one picture

I too was there for Typhoon Wanda and my parents were members of the Yacht Club as well. We used to get the Walla Walla boat from Kowloon to the club and get dropped off at that causeway where the ship was wrecked!

The features that document your history are very interesting and you spin a very good yarn. Please do more of these. What was your first boat from design through to build? Thanks for the lesson. 👍

I was one and a half in HK when Wanda struck. We were in Green Lane Hall on the Island my Dad was in the RHKP as a Chief Inspector. He was nearly killed when a street sign hit him in the blast. I can't remember it obviously, but I remember the low cost tenement buildings going up afterwards. Much maligned recently but surely better than squatter huts on the hillsides

Thank you for excellent historical pictures and your account of events. I've been in the Far East since 75 and am well acquianted with Typhoons. The world was a different place back then without the Internet and mobile phones. I'm not sure it has improved. 😀👿👿
