- The annual Road Racing Drivers Club dinner at Long Beach honored Bobby Unser last week and the three-time Indy 500 winner honored his friends and racers with some hilarious stories from his checkered career.
Host Bobby Rahal only had to ask one question about going from the Italian Grand Prix to the Hoosier Hundred back to Italy to get Uncle Bobby off and running. Brother Al, Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney were in attendance to make sure the king of Pikes Peak didn't embellish more than usual and Dario Franchitti learned that riding in a rental car with either Unser brother was scarier than Turn 1 at Indianapolis.
Safety guru Bill Simpson weighed in on Unser's ability to dodge dinner checks while IndyCar competition chief Derrick Walker passed along some compliments about his former driver at Team Penske.
"That was really nice," said Unser afterwards. "I had a great time."
As did the rest of us.

Robin Miller is a kid in a candy store. Brilliant.
Love Bobby Unser! I took him for the ride of his life last year. Drove him around streets while I was blindfolded. It was fun to see Bobby just a little scared at only 40 m.p.h.
I live in Costa Rica and love racing stuff. I am lucky enough to know "Uncle Bobby" what a great person! Every day I arrive at work first thing I see is a poster he autographed for me. Already bought my ticket for Indy 500 2015 and I hope to see Bobby again. He deserves this "honor dinners" and more. Bobby for President!!
Only Robin Miller could do those kinds of interviews. He knows those guys well and they know him.
