This was the best lesson in watercolor portrait I’ve seen. Thank you so much Janet and Eric for sharing this awesome, helpful demo to all!! I’m gonna go play with these ideas and techniques 😊
Eric I painted a picture of grapes following the young lady on your show , with pastel colors turn out pretty good .not perfect but I love my colors never used pastel
Hi there, I am a retired art teacher/lecturer from the uk, i watched this with interest because although I am good at teaching watercolours never pleased with my own results, today I have learnt quite a lot from a very good teacher Janet, the translucency and alive portraiture and also the way of mixing the colours on the paper…with a butterfly wing…superb at almost 83 and I am still learning which of course I will pass on and whats more encourage my students to watch this page on utube and I do find it easier to work in oils and pastels but now I will hope to succeed with the watercolours…
As for saying she is not very good at explaining, you learn by watching more than you do by hearing, artists are called the eyes of the world as musicians are called the ears of the world, so watch and also note two things, how important the white of the paper is, this is what gives the freshness…you never ever cover all the paper with paint…but no more, I am a teacher, but this is the teacher you should be watching you will learn so much
I was priveliged to attend a Janet Rogers workshop in Sarasota in 2020 just before the lockdown. I learned and improved so much! Then when I returned home I had plenty of time to practice.
Thank you so much for this very informative, relaxing, and fun approach to portraits in watercolor, which I have always wanted to do but never had the guts. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! ❤️ -USA, Massachusetts
Mr.Rhodes, so thankful for your comments and questions, you are reading my mind with them. She is a fabulous artist but teaching skills could be much better.
Absolutely love this! I have been looking for this style art to learn and paint. Such a great artist/painter/teacher! Thank you so much! I’m so thankful I found you Janet!! Love love love!! 🤍
I believe she mixes yellow & blue. Her palette consists of sets of warm & cool primary colors, with which you can achieve most colors. Plus her own rose violet. She often mixed aureolin with cerulean or ultramarine to get green.
Aerolin is fugitive!! It browns over time and fades to almost nothing. Aerolin is fine for art to be made for reproduction work, but never use it on original art to be sold and displayed in homes! There are so many yellows that she could have used such as transparent yellow or raw sienna that would have similar if not same results.

I thought had better explain the comment …’with a butterfly’s wing’ please do not take this seriously, its simply means very lightly

I believe she mixes yellow & blue. Her palette consists of sets of warm & cool primary colors, with which you can achieve most colors. Plus her own rose violet. She often mixed aureolin with cerulean or ultramarine to get green.
