You might look into a hooklift or rolloff class 7-8 truck. You can get a flatbed sled to haul 1 piece on the truck, use a trailer to tow the 2nd, and you still have a shorter overall length than a semi with a 45-50' trailer. The hooklift opens doors to chipper bodies, log hauler bunks, dumpsters, dump body, etc. I have 2 hooklifts on F-550s with an assortment of bodies, they are very versatile for my construction and light excavation business. I'm looking to upgrade to larger stuff in 2022.
Been dealing with the same issues, needing to be able to haul the TL12 and the VIO55 at the same time. Last week I picked up a single axle dump with a air tag, rated for 53,300#. So now the problem is I got the 2 year old G.N. and now need a pintle pull, it just never ends. I did end up with a sweet dump truck that was desperately needed, on the plus side.
I always use my dad's excellent description of "Overloaded" or "OK" Overloaded = rims are cutting tire treads. OK = rims are not cutting tire tread. Vehicles are just too dadgum expensive all the way around.

In you're business time is money and fuel, a semi that can reduce the amount of trucks, trailers, and multiple trips to move equipment to the job site, is money in you're pocket.
I get it, the semi can haul more, pull more but at the end of the day, how often is it going to sit not making money vs. turning in the 5500 for an updated version. Especially if you have to have the 5500 regardless.
If anything get a single axle freightliner. I personally would stick with a 3500 or 5500. I may get a 5500 for my next unit and upgrade my trailer just like your diamond c flat deck 😎👍
What about a duel tandem rear axel tilt bed and your 20k bumper pull pintle hitch or jump up to a 30k or 40k pintle trailer. That way you could still pull it behind your pickups.

Like some one else said. A day cab Pete can be bought for 40k used. In the same boat but gonna make it work till the prices drop. Insurance is too crazy for a big rig as well. That truck has to be working. Commercial Ins for a pick up set up is way cheaper as you know.
I suggest getting a smaller Pete with a 12’ flatbed, not a fifth wheel plate. Makes the truck more versatile, pull a gooseneck or your white pintle hitch. Plus you got some usable bed space. Semi’s are definitely a big investment, my dad has a Pete that falls under the same CARB rules as your 5500. @@VBELTandSON Wide track front end all day. Crazy that you can pick up one of these for cheaper than a limited 3500. I've seen the roads you haul on, I'd try to keep everything as small as possible, til you can't get away with it. But like you said you can always get a used semi and trailer for less than 100k. Up to you where you want to spend your $
If it was an out of state truck would it still fall under Cali emissions requirements?
no . Only trucks that are registered in California are under California’s requirements
What about a set up like a lot of these guys up in the one haul their dozers on with the tag behind. I see alot of em with a skid steer on the truck with a hoe or dozer on the trailer. Most can haul a 308 to 310 sixed machine on the truck
As long as whatever setup you get, saves your butt on taxes, you’re good to go. I look at it as... a: pay the government
B: drive something with the same money
How do you calculate your setup fee?
I'm curious of the same thing
6.7 ford 406 cid , 6.7 Cummins 408 cid .
Have you thought of a medium duty truck
The setup would look sweet with a new diamond c step deck lol
Will you sell your current 5500 to offset the cost of the new 5500 when that time comes? Feel like you could get a decent amount for that truck
He already said he wasnt going to sell it in a previous video
Unless someone offered me big bucks for it I won’t sell it. Even then I still wouldn’t want to sell it. Just reg in another state
@@happydoggs thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge of this channel. I’d be lost without your guidance. I’m sure Sam is also forever grateful for you answering his questions for him. I just hope you keep sharing your knowledge with all the followers of this page. Others may need help too!!!
Ever thought about a Freightliner M2 hauler truck
I want to haul 40k if I got anything bigger than a 5500
What if you register the 5500 in the state you have your other property?
I’m looking forward to a new truck either way.
I’ve got a friend with an older International day cab and a Landoll … he can do local haulage and run his excavator underweight for cheap.
I guess it’s a matter of perspective
IIRC Sam said that semi types have to be 2012 or newer or something like that. California CARB
No Furd Sam you’ll get killed down the mountain 😂😂👍
Do those new laws count for all vehicles being used in California or just those registered in California
Lol only Cali registration. See guys daily with older semis from out of state running through Cali.
@@VBELTandSON I may have the solution to your problem then. Vermont does out of state registration ( in essence you can live in California and have Vermont tags on your truck). It may ever be cheaper that way!
I plan on using my Nevada address for keeping the truck around but I’d like a new one that’s an auto and ready to go
@@VBELTandSON gotcha I was under the impression that you were getting a new truck due to the new regulations
Both forces upgrading
Wish dodge would make a medium duty truck like Chevy and Ford are doing right now.
Problem with medium duty is you get less hp that a pickup. Just gotta step up or a 3500 can do everything a midium duty
Buy a new 5500 for now and later once more funds are available buy a three axle semi. If it doesn’t work you can always sell it
Don’t go Ford. They’re piles, anyone hauling heavy cross country runs a Cummins for a good reason. Keep on keep’n on brother!
Lol
Would love to buy your 5500 to replace my 3500 with
Contents dialled
Why not a f 650 or f 750, or a truck about that size? Twice the pay load or pulling of a pickup
Small engines in a bigger truck. If go big go big I’m thinking
@@VBELTandSON my 65 f600 flatbed, easly pulls both my forklift and backhoe at same time, with steel on the flatbed. The heavest ive scaled was 49,000,
And mine just has a 330 ci fe block, rated at 160 hp. Its not fast, but you go from pickup sized brakes, springs, axles, to big rig sized parts.
Hey can you do like dirt perfect
How much would you sell the truck for?
I doubt I’ll sell it
Get a diamond c triple tandem step deck with a hydraulic dovetail
Is that a 5.9?
No
You didn't talk about this but a semi running half capacity is safer for everyone involved than a 5500 running at it's maximum.
The driver is what makes it safe or not
Semi! Semi semi semi! 13 speed pay that road tax, tag tax FET tax, money money money. Why shit have to be so dam expensive
You mention a semi but still need a 5500, why not look at a Peterbilt 335 or a Freightliner M2? Then you could still pull your buddy trailers and a gooseneck.
I want to haul 40-50k
Why not get a stepdeck for a tractor. But then again get a 5500.
I think moving out of California would solve a lot……..
Naw
Need to get a automatic in stead of Manuel
I’m game for that but you’re the only person to vote against the stick shift. Lol
@@VBELTandSON I think that they pull trailers better than Manuel
Yeah modern autos are pretty nice. That’s one of the reasons why I’m looking forward to upgrading. I love manual trucks but auto for everyday work rig sounds nice
Or just register your current 5500 out of state and never worry about CARB laws again 🤷♂️
I would like to tow more weight. And I don’t want to tow more with this truck. Looking forward to a new truck and yes this truck willl be reg in Nevada no matter what anyway.
If you sell your old gooseneck let me know
You mentioned B&W, but I haven't found any weight ratings for their 3" balls. I know mine is rated a 30k, but thats all a 2-5/16" is normally rated for, which I think is undersized for what it looks like you're hauling. That Diamond C plus the 2 skid steers has got to be pushing that. Do you ever worry that your Norstar bed is only rated at 30K? Just for liability reasons?
I didn’t haul the to machines. Just loaded them. And 3 inch ball is 38,000. When I haul I’m always right around 30k. Takes like 50k to get a 30k rating. I haul light compared to some guys with similar set ups
You wouldn t be able to get a semi in some of the places you take the pickups in
T880 + 55 ton talbert lowboy. Be done with it.
Lol it would be yard art. Wouldn’t fit in a job site lol
Selling my dodge $500 it’s yours
I'll buy it
Idk how you can handle living in commiefornia. As an Alabama man with no regulations its hard to see but I understand that people like the location of where they live
The truck regulation is the only thing that is an issue and I will still be running the truck. If you ever came to my area you would think different. Pretty nice here
@@VBELTandSON I got ya. Would love to go out that way one day. We hear about all of the stuff that happens over there on the daily and it sounds like hell but I also don't believe a fraction of what the media says so I'd like to see for myself one day. Although I will say 5 dollars for gas is unheard of.....we are paying 2.90 tops here and diesel is cheaper than gas at some stations around here.
just buy a singel axle semi truck
I have a 45k excavator. I would like to haul
@@VBELTandSON ok den buy a tamdem axle truck
Time to dump the wallet 💩 alright I’m done I’m out bye
Your thinking too much into this and causing yourself more stress, I wouldn’t be to eager to always change but that’s just me 🤷🏻♂️
Not stressed at all. just talking option
@@VBELTandSON I gotcha, either way it’s a win👍🏻 keep up the good work 💪🏻
