Honestly, using the game to spec out the truck was a brilliant move. And one thing you might want to think about, if you haven't already, is that ATS can be played in VR. If you take this approach, it would even allow you to get a really good feel for the cab and even location of things like mirrors and instruments, and you can do it with customers before a weld has been made.
VR headset with a wheel and pedals would be really cool for demoing. Show up with a pelican case and a laptop, borrow a chair and a folding table and they can test drive everything.

I've been involved with Edison Motors since Topsy was being built. As someone who's worked with startups since 1995, what most people are missing is just how different their approach is from literally every company I've ever known. Chace, Eric and the team aren't in some pristine office, scoping something out on paper, in CAD or with VR. These are guys who know trucks first. They reimagined what electrifying heavy-duty vocational trucks could be, then set about just getting it done. Likewise, the engineering team aren't in some comfy, clean office. Their in the shop, they're in/around/under the truck, and they're out in the field, getting their hands dirty and their boots muddy. From the driver environment and workload, to the economics for the owner, literally every aspect of an extended range electric truck is vastly superior to that of its traditional counterparts. Beyond that, extended range electric heavy-duty vocational trucks can do so much more than any traditional counterpart could ever even imagine doing. With less than $2 million and from a tent shop with a dirt floor, these guys laser levelled a set a frame rails, then designed, fabricated and built everything on Topsy that's wasn't already a finished component or subassembly (C9, generator, batteries, e-axles, inverters, converters, etc., etc.). And they did all that in under 2 years. Having turned the wheels under her own power just 7 days before the debut at Fully Charged Live Canada in September 2023, Topsy underwent further integration work and testing. This past September, the Edison team returned to Vancouver for Everything Electric Canada 2024. Now, less than 3 months later, they've been field testing under real world conditions that no other manufacturer would ever dare. In the process they've secured orders from partners who believe in Edison Motors' vision and are fully invested in their success. This is how a company disrupts an entire industry while changing the world.
"... while charging the world." Fixed that for you. Greetings from Germany. Electric is the way to go. And if it needs a generator, it just needs a generator.
its nice....but also not how to scale up so you can crunch out 50,000 trucks per year. you needs robotics, assembly lines and $500 million in cash. muddy boots doesn't get you that.
@@ysesq Depends. If you specialize in a specific area, you can earn good money. Iveco, Volvo or Scania wont do snow plows. They will just offer the base. If that base needs improvement, you can earn even more.
@@ysesq There are zero plans to "crunch out 50,000 trucks per year". Therefore, no need for assembly lines, automation or robotics. Thus, zero need for $500 million. In case you're not aware, heavy-duty vocational trucks are bay built. That's because everything from the frame rails up is bespoke to the customer/use case. You don't build a winch truck, a low bed, a snow plow, a drill moving rig, or any other variant one can imagine on a friggin' assembly line. Edison: working smarter and harder. Using American Truck Simulator for the basic build is genius. I love how the first set of trucks are not box trucks that compete with everyone else. Tridrive wench truck and snow plows, the big iron.
Edison’s first trucks are a wench truck for heavy haul loads and snow plows. Tesla started by hauling Pepsi on smooth highways on short distribution routes. I know which truck I want.
I know y'all might have already thought of this, but just in case- On the diesel fuel side of things, a circulation/ filtration pump might be a good idea to prevent algae growth in applications that don't run the gen set very often, and are fueled with ultra low sulfur diesel. I bring this up because when we were doing vehicle transport with a Dodge 3500, we had a 100 gallon tank in the bed, and it seemed like algae was always an issue. I rigged up a pump and filter setup that would just take it out of the tank, run it through a filter, and put it back, and running that daily seemed to take care of the problem. Adding a heating element to it probably also wouldn't be a bad idea to prevent gelling (and to make the gen set a bit easier to start)
In Canada most of the diesel has an additive from about October to April to make this not a problem - in Alberta where the video is shot the additive mix is such that it should be ok till -50. So heating element on the diesel shouldn't be required.
@@robinbennett5994 In the Navy we had to re-circulate our Helicopter fuel, through Coalescing filters, twice a day. Moisture was huge issue because of the temperature extremes we worked in. Needles to say, any moisture or bio-growth would affect helo engine performance
A big YES on fuel polishing 😊 Though the same thing when I read his comments When I watch big vessels for sale video I always look for or listen to the tour guy talk about what the vessels have besides just the fuel filters. The amounts of gallons that they keep on vessels are going to have growth issues with fuel contamination. Plus by running the fuel through that resuscitation, it shows you the build-up of a growth problem. 😊
I was half pondering if you could take some of the manual labour out of the process by putting the fuel cleaning filter on a separate Solar powered pump to look after itself, don't need to run it fast if it's constantly going. But that wouldn't play well with the anti gelling requirement would it?

Love to see your testing your people and the trucks in our Alberta trucking environment. Royal will definitely give you amazing feedback, even more so in the winter. Let's move some rigs boys!
Between the Logging and Energy industry trucks, your Engineers are gonna be busy. So many interesting specialty trucks and home grown innovation. Great place for Edison to take root and become an Industry icon. Big hopes for you guys.
Going to need variable speed winch on the bed truck since an electrically driven hydraulic pump won’t be happy without a VFD. Simple manually adjustable valve on hydro to the winch. Will be weird hi speed winching without revving the motor!
I cant wait for the day when one of them trucks make it to my area to see in action. Also i believe one day there will be 1 ton dully crew cab pickup trucks running around with the Edison name on the grill.
Ive never wanted to drive a rig ever in my life, until now... I'd love to take that bad boy for a spin. Looks like fun. You guys are great, wishing you pure success!!
Topsy sounds like my kid's OG fatbike flying down the FSR at Harrison Lake... just coasting with no sound but the gravel under some serious tires. Delicious!
P for wipers, N for horn. Great to see you getting contracts to get your testing done with your partners. If I ever get the means, I'd like to do a good quad-axle all-wheel drive dump truck.
If you want to see some beautiful choreography, watch a rig move when a good contractor with good operators and stampers does the job. It’s absolutely incredible to see the coordination and the skill involved. The Truck Push orchestrates the whole performance and there aren’t many wasted movements. Not like the screaming and black smoke in the old days.
I want to get back to heavy equipment. I had run my dad's 30 hp Kubota. The farm I worked for let me run much bigger stuff and I learned really fast. The 924f loading hay with no brakes was probably the machine that taught me what I needed to know. I got to run a nearly new 950K and G I think. This was a decade ago and my memory isn't great these days. Those 950's were so sweet though. The float on those machines was sweet. I could cover ground and keep the loader planted without bucking the machine and causing unnecessary wear and tear. Joystick was also a huge improvement, but with enough hours the old hydro sticks were fine. The hydo finger setup was my preference. But I only got 40 hours on that machine as it was a rental. I really liked it and it gave me a bridge to the joystick. I haul propane transports now but would like to expand into welding or heavy equipment. We'll se who offers me a job first. Being home every night would be nice.
15:30 As a European I would HIGHLY recommend you switch from brake light indicators to dedicated indicator lights, as they're much safer. "The Senseless Ambiguity of North American Turn Signals" by Technology Connections here on UA-cam is a great video on the matter. LEDs don't use that much power, and there's bound to be standardised, off-the-shelf components you can use to add dedicated rear turn signals to future production models.
Great Collaboration, I live in the Caroline AB area and saw you guys running around Topsy! i was super excited to see her live on the highways. been a huge fan of Eddison Motors from the Start been Following all your media. super excited to see this project come to life! Great job to the Team and can't wait for the pickup Conversion to be available! when can we pre Order those!?
Free advice (which might tick off an acquaintance). Use the generator for onsite (I think it's already planned) drill pumps to limit fuel stored on the drill rig
love oilfield trucks thanks to timelapse trucker and you guys; would love to see how these beasts are built. Can't wait for the new cab design to make its way to ATS as well; looks beautiful Edit: we need to get people driving 18 speeds more; the most fun transmissions around
HOLY COW!! you even got Mike Deboss out there too. actually that's not really a surprise because he strikes me as being a hands-on kind of guy. your engineers will have a better understanding of the different kinds of work that these trucks are being built for.
This application makes so much sense for electric. This truck doesn't move very far at all, and half the time it's just running the engine to power the hydraulics, which is overkill. The generator on this might not fire up all day depending on what needs moving
You will need to add a speaker and a sound to Topsy. Here in the US they are making all EV manufacturers add a sound to the vehicles so that pedestrians can hear a car approaching. Its a safety feature for EV's because they don't make any noise from their engine. ALthough in the case of Topsy, I suppose that the speaker could be turned off when the generator fires up.
Love this project, love these guys. What a beauty day a, indeed. Takes me back to the days of snagging somewhat staticy SCTV with some coathanger from over Lake Erie. Seriously, I wish they would adopt the generator style hybrid in cars instead of having all the extra drivetrain of current hybrid cars and SUVs. Need a system that will use the 4.3 in my Astro, plenty of room for batteries inside or out.
That's pretty amazing, using American \ Euro Truck Simulator as a build & pricing tool. Proper big brain moment whoever thought of that. Also, what is it with Canada and UA-cam channels? I swear, half the stuff I watch regularly is from Canada. I'm from the UK.
Another interesting video. Doing work on rig move, will need wench on Topsy, like pipe tubs, building, mud pumps, shacks etc. Cat towing (cable rear drives) getting her stuck in mud!!!
Y'all better release this mod once you get everything sorted. Especially if you can get the drivetrain to work right. SCS tends to be super engaged with their fans btw, you might wanna get in touch about that. Also, you can get proper shift knobs with splitter and range select switches designed to work with this game. 👍
Back in the early 2000s we got to play around with electric motor gokarts. After the first night i knew these things would be the future. It was all a matter of getting the electricity source figured out. Once you guys prove out the diesal and your platform you should mess with those fuel turbines you can throw anything in to
27:35 What's crazy is American Truck Simulator does have an experimental vr mode so they can sit in it if they really want. I wouldn't suggest it though as it is very headache and motion sickness inducing. Also believe wipers default button is P.

Alex on LTT wore a blue Edison Motors hat on latest video, so I guess a collab video is coming
ow that will be so cool
Maybe. But Alex has been a practical guy from before LTT so maybe he just has the apparel.
But LTT and Edison are the BC, Canada channels I watch so it would be interesting. Maybe Linus can give out some screwdrivers 😊
Alex has been a follower for a long time if you watch older videos.
I went to a KW open house 😊 when I was very young down by Boeing field. My dad's friend was one of those muddy boot guys. Mostly with the Canadian and Alaska logging off-road haulers. I would so love to come up and visit your yard. Your big Rig truck design is such an advanced idea. I love seeing you work with the oil field heavy haul side, and the great experts 😊 Scania engine willing to work with a start-up is so wonderful 😊 I saw one of there static display marine Diesel engines at a work boat show, was very impressive. I love it. You get the work guy who actually runs the trucks to be part of the design and build 😊 not just a guy in white shirt with black ties engineer types.
Amazing video loved all the info on the work that their new Edison Truck is going to do!!!
I sometimes think that the designers of cars don't even have a driver's license or know which end of a wrench to hold. You guys are amazing.
Well done , onwards and upwards for Edison motors ❤❤
Going to need variable speed winch on the bed truck since an electrically driven hydraulic pump won’t be happy without a VFD. Simple manually adjustable valve on hydro to the winch. Will be weird hi speed winching without revving the motor!
I cant wait for the day when one of them trucks make it to my area to see in action. Also i believe one day there will be 1 ton dully crew cab pickup trucks running around with the Edison name on the grill.
I cannot wait for the Pickup Truck Kits to start going out and to see the great builds that come from that!
Ive never wanted to drive a rig ever in my life, until now... I'd love to take that bad boy for a spin. Looks like fun. You guys are great, wishing you pure success!!
That looked like a fun day playing with all the big boy toys👍👍
I remember doing that on the drilling rigs that we had a big o John deer front end loader, had a hoot loading pipe, casing, drilling mud.
Ngl i was skeptical when i first saw topsy and the plans you were talking about but damn you're killing it!!
Great job of creating reality around a vision.
Love watching the engineers learn the controls
Hey royal if your watching! I'm an 26 year old aussie that would love to come jump in one of your rigs one day! Would be absolutely awesome experience
Good job like that. ❤❤❤
GOOD JOB EVERYONE!
I’ve been out of OTR trucking since 1994. What you are doing is really fascinating for the industry. Keep on ….
Those renders look AMAZING! blacked out trouble!
Your new truck design looks so much better.
Great video, love to see the involvement of the engineers. For fun y’all should do a 0-100 kmh run loaded and unloaded with Topsey
Edison motors is awesome! Makes me happy to watch and listen! Thanks for throwing in some good humor!
It's on the website
Free advice (which might tick off an acquaintance). Use the generator for onsite (I think it's already planned) drill pumps to limit fuel stored on the drill rig
I DEFINITELY would love to drift a rig down a gravel road!😍
love oilfield trucks thanks to timelapse trucker and you guys; would love to see how these beasts are built. Can't wait for the new cab design to make its way to ATS as well; looks beautiful
Edit: we need to get people driving 18 speeds more; the most fun transmissions around
Absolutely superb to see you’re progress, great stuff
So Wise , Thank You for getting the engeneers involved with every thing.
You guys are gonna need a bigger workshop 🤔
We know, we're working on that still
logging in to American Truck Simulator to buy it
Need ol' Peg from Zip Ties to giver the final greased mechanic latte of approval
I think everyone is waiting for you guys to light em up on the road, and do a rolling burnout. 🙏🏼🇺🇲
Gotta bring that truck down to Manitoba to get some brutal winter testing
I'm laughing at the Tinman Trucking reference with the green 😅
HOLY COW!! you even got Mike Deboss out there too. actually that's not really a surprise because he strikes me as being a hands-on kind of guy. your engineers will have a better understanding of the different kinds of work that these trucks are being built for.
This is such a great idea. Really enjoying following you guys
Great awesome Editing.. love how I can drive the Edison Truck on ATS.. now I need to figure out where I can play it...
Great news. I wish you guys unlimited success.
Would be cool if the customers would pick the options in the game and you would then build it after it
I live 30 mins from Caroline, AB! I'll be excited to see an Edison truck locally!
20:10 the pure childish joy in these guys laughter 😂
Nice to see the nice solid progression 🙂
You guys keep kicking ass!
Exciting times in the EV/HD trucking industry!
Miss Running a 400 Inch, that double steer took a minute but gotter figured.
