Have loved this song sens i was 12 years old. Today i am 75 and its still my favorit. I looked at the movie Rose Marie on tv every time they showed it.
I know this may cause some controversy but it is only my opinion. I am 84 years “young” and have listened many times to this song by Ann and Fernando, also by Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. This rendering gives much more feeling and brings reality to the story being told. Two brilliant actors, two wonderful voices with one beautiful song. How can you improve on perfection? Brings tears to my eyes.Long may this kind of song and melody live.
Thank You! I'm the poster, and I'm grateful to hear from you! I respect my elders, and I'm approaching 75 years! I, too, have heard and seen both versions of this most beautiful of films. Hardly a musical critic, I was never really thrilled by the Jeanette and Nelson version. As lovely as it was, I thought it was a little over the top, operactically. Lovely Ms.Blyth and Mr. Lamas lent more of an air of authenticity to their rendition. They were 2 people admitting their new love for one another! I found it beautiful, and wanted to share it. Honored to have heard from you! kckjoiuyt876 varadero
Yes, I too felt goosebumps when hearing this song. Ann Blyth's voice is so pure and angelic and so powerful. Fernando Lamas, I've never seen any of his movies but he too has a magnificent voice. Lovely song.
I'm south Koean. 72years old, I Saw this movie in my middle school age. One afternoon, I leave out my private lesson after regular classes and go to theatre. There Ann Blyth was so beautiful splended, And her voice was so pure and ringing, can't forget after this. She made my inner space more rich and sympathy. Thanks to Ann and heroine Fernando. Art is everlasting. Thank you all!
Wow wow wow. Perhaps its because of the later recording, but I feel as if I'm hearing this duet for the first time; I'm actually hearing the words and actors is command of beautiful, powerful singing voices.
I met Ann in 1966, after she had performed on stage in "Kismet". I'm 6'2" and was surprised that Ann was so tiny. But when she looked up at me, I saw the most beautiful blue eyes I have ever seen. She took my hand and so sweetly thanked me for coming to see the performance. To this day, she is still the most beautiful woman I ever met. Beauty, talent, and warmth of person. Wow!!!
This one was one of my Dad's favorite songs. He is gone now but every time I hear it I recall him and it really is a meaningful and beautiful love song.
+Jorge Mario Rodas What a great memory you have of your Dad! My father was a "secret singer," and this was one of his favorite songs also! Thanks so much for your message! Beautiful Ann is still with us, and must be in her mid 80s by now. No dubbing here; these 2 really had beautiful voices. We're the lucky ones! Thanks so much for your comment. Best wishes, varadero
I can personally attest to Fernando Lamas' singing talents, as I was in a production of "The King and I" with him and his wife at the time, Arlene Dahl, at the Carousel Theatre in Framingham, Mass., in 1958. I played the favorite princess who pulled on the King's pants for attention at the end of the 'March of the Siamese Children'...alas, my one brush with fame. ; )
"The King & I" produced and directed by Mitch Lee...A wonderful man who I had the pleasure of meeting through a wonderful boss who knew him very well....
First time I've seen this version, what can I say?Have goose bumps all over!Had forgotten all about Ann Blyth! Thank you for posting, this has to be the most beautiful version of a most beautiful song!
Lucky you! Imagine being able to say that your grandmother is one of the world's most beautiful women, with a voice to match! If you read some of the earlier posts you'll note how I saw, and briefly met her some years ago, here in San Francisco. My best friend worked with Ms. B in several summer-stock programs some years ago. I'm honored to hear from you, and thank you so much for your kind remarks! Best wishes to your Grandmother!
Hi Varadero As always, you have great taste in entertainment ! Back in the 80s, I did a production of THE NEW MOON with Ann Blyth and I have fond memories of working with her. At that time she was in her late 50s but looked and sounded 30 years younger . She still had that beautiful soprano voice. Even in rehearsal she was perfectly dressed with full hair and make up and to this day I have never seen a woman so stunning. I remember her being a huge draw and audiences LOVED her !
Hi Paul, First, thanks so much for your kind mention on my channel! You're so lucky to have worked with Ms. Blyth, one of the tiniest, most beautiful actresses I've ever seen. My best friend worked with her in a "summer-stock" production of "The Sound of Music." She loved her too, and says she was so beautiful, still sounded amazing and was very kind. I met her when there was a tribute to her in San Francisco at the Castro Theater, about 10 years ago. Think she was 77 then and looked much younger. Sending you the link, but the quality is not so great: ua-cam.com/video/wBh53DaDHQ4/v-deo.html There's at least 1 other clip that I'd like you to see. Your knowledge is truly vast! I'm so honored to hear from you, and hope you'll keep in touch. Some years ago I actually met Ann, here in San Francisco where I live. It's hard to believe that I actually spoke with her! I still don't believe it, but there was a photographer who took photos and I was able to purchase one of the two of us together. I'm so glad to hear from you; thank you Edward Durrant, and please keep in touch!
+Edward McCurdy Grateful to hear from you, and that this piece brought you back in time to a happy place! These 2 are amazing here; their appearances, and voices so memorable! Thanks once more! varadero
Ann, I watched 'Rose Marie' the other evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. I really loved you in 'I'll Never Forget You' where you are so stunningly beautiful. I couldn't find an email for you so I'll just send you the congrats here! You are so beautiful!
Maravilhoso !!!!!!!! Bendito e suavemente lindíssimo! Eu cantava com minha mãe, quando viva. Depois, nunca mais achei quem cantasse comigo. Enfim.........
Cada vez que mi mujer oye esa canción, se ella llorar, pues le encanta y le da como una gran melancolía al recordar que vio la película, un musical llamado Rose Marie cuando tenía solo 15 años y le encantó.
You're very wise! This is indeed the same song sung over 20 years earlier by Jeanette and Nelson! I love both renditions, but I've actually met Ann Blyth, and she's my favorite! I've always been amazed that especially after meeting her, a tiny butterfly beauty like Ann, could tear the roof of a theater with that magnificent voice! Also I want to wish belated kudos to Mr. Fernando Lamas. This is his truly amazing voice; not dubbed, no subterfuge. He could sing pretty much anything!
Oscar Bernardo Hi Mr. Bernardo, I feel blessed that I met her some 8, 9 years ago when she was still in her 70s! I'm always amazed knowing that her amazing, huge voice was produced by this tiny angel! Her beauty is unlike any other! Will forward more. My best friend is someone who did summer stock with her in several shows around the US. Thanks once more for your kind remarks, and best wishes! varadero
Rose Marie" was the first Ann Blyth movie I ever saw - I was 10 years old and have been a fan of Ann's ever since. I have seen all of her movies and hope they all are on DVD soon. This video brought back beautiful memories of a classy, elegant & beautiful lady with a beautiful voice.
I like this song and the video is good also. The film was made ten years before my own time but it is something worth seeing. Beautiful love story and a theme to match. Nice to hear and enjoy.
You've got an inch on me, and I met her many years later here in San Francisco. This was a "tongue-in-cheek" tribute to Joan Crawford, and Ann was the guest of honor. I was honored to meet her, and have the photo to prove it. She was then about 78, and looked closer to 50! What a beauty! It's really hard to accept that all that loveliness, and talent, could fit into such a tiny package! Please check here on YT and enter Blyth/Crawford or similar and you'll see her again. Keep in touch!
+maureen1938 Hi maureen1938, I'm so glad that you enjoyed this! Given the original film, with Jeanette and Nelson, I was surprised that anyone would even notice this rendition! Ann always had the loveliest voice, as did Mr. Lamas! Some have questioned his vocal talents, but he really was a superb singer! So glad to hear from you! Best regards, varadero
+Len Cox Hello Mr. Cox, About 8 years ago I met Ms. Blyth at a film tribute to her which included a live, lengthy interview on stage. There are a couple of versions here on YT; please look for them. She's still beautiful, tiny, and looks perfectly lovely. In this clip with Fernando Lamas she actually looks "made-down," instead of "made-up!" Guess it wasn't easy toning down beauty like hers! Thanks so much for writing! varadero
@joannecarroll1 Hi! So happy you liked this! I was lucky enough to meet Ms. Blyth a few years ago. The program was here in San Francisco, at The Castro Theater. They showed "Mildred Pierce," and after the movie they introduced Ms. Blyth! The theater went wild, and the following interview was incredible. I don't understand all rules of YT, but if you just go to search, and type in Ann Blyth and Castro, you'll see some of that wonderful interview. She was then 78, now around 81! Just charming!
I too saw this when I must have been about ten (1954 minus 1944) and it left a lasting impression on an impressionable young mind. I was entranced by the Rose Marie character and the theme song has been magic for me ever since. Have never been able to access any footage from the 1954 version before (tried you tube a few years ago but there was nothing) so discovering this this evening has been delightful!
LYRICS to INDIAN LOVE CALL Ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh So echoes of sweet love notes Gently fall through the forest stillness As the waiting Indian lovers call When the lone lagoon stirs in the spring Welcoming home some Swannee white wing When the maiden moon riding the sky Gathers her star eyed dream children nigh That is the time of the moon and the year When love dreams to Indian maidens appear And this is the song that they hear When I'm calling you ...I will answer you That means I offer my love to you To be your own If you refuse me I will be blue and waiting all alone But if when you hear my love call ringing clear And I hear your answering echo so dear Then I will know our love will come true You'll belong to me, I'll belong to you
Rita Taddeucci Raffanti Hello Rita Taddeucci Faffanti! WOW! You've really nailed it! Your lyrics are wonderful! I've begun to think that liking, and having posted this particular rendition, has made me not so very likable! I, too loved the original film! Thing is I've always been a huge fan of Ann Blyth! I'll still never comprehend how such a beautiful girl, barely 5', could produce that voice, but she did! Also, I've never been a big Billy Chrystal fan. He may have gained some of his fame by immitating Fernando, but physically he's a nebbish, and Fernando could sing and act circles around him! Look, as you wanted to post the lyrics, I needed to say what I thought about these 2 lovely performers, and at least one of their detractors. I'm happy to know you and hear from you! Best regards, varadero
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your comments, veradero1839 ! I was introduced to the Nelson Eddy/Jeannette MacDonald version of Indian Love Call from a record album my dad had, and I LOVED THE SONG from the first time I heard it ! Then I saw the remake with Fernando and Ann, and I thought Fernando was SOOOO MUCH MORE sexier and handsome in the role than Nelson Eddy...and I LOVED it even MORE when I found out it was REALLY HIM singing ! Thank you very much for posting it...I had to post the lyrics so I could sing along with it. BTW, Billy Crystal knew Fernando and had his permission to do that imitation of him...I always thought it was VERY funny...I also like your description of your channel, and that you are VERY diverse in your postings...KUDOS !
Rita Taddeucci Raffanti I'd no idea that Billy and Fernando knew one another! I take back my sort of snide remark. Think it's kind of against the law to send direct links to friends, but I've 2 suggestions for you. The 1st is that, once in YT, you just go to the big search box at the top and paste this in: Night! - Fernando Lamas, Lana Turner. The other one is: Fernando Lamas! Vilja! Check 'em out! Best to you! varadero
@@varadero1839 As.a matter of fact, Fernando LIKED Billy and that spot on impression! As to the "nebbish" comment, MOST guys are unimpressive compared to the physical/vocal adonis Fernando was.
He was! Few people believed that he was more than just a handsome guy! He was a fine actor, with an elegant singing voice! Glad you liked this! Here's another! ua-cam.com/video/NhMCW-_mO9k/v-deo.html Best regards, varadero
Thank you for introducing one of my favorite melodies. I have two disks of Country & Western, one of which covers this song sung bySlim Whitman. Western music in the stage of the musical seem somewhat different from those on the screen. The musicals and the western movies are both very useful and enjoyable for the learner of English. Thanks again.
remeber the first time i watched this. At first i though nothing could beat the 1930s one but when he started singing i was shocked at how beautfull his voice was and i think he was very handsome man. Ann Blyth has a voice of an angel.
+Bits And Bobs Hi! Mr. Lamas had a superb voice, and these 2 really looked and sounded lovely in this film. As for Ann, I was lucky to meet her once and she's still beautiful at 87! Such a tiny lady, with such a very big, angelic voice! I think she left Hollywood to raise her family: 5 children! If you have time when you're in UA-cam, just go to search and type in Ann Blyth Castro Theater. This is from about 9 years ago, but that's where I met her. So happy to hear from you, and many thanks! varadero
@Milordvega Fernando had a fine voice, and was not dubbed here or to my knowledge in any other film. He was trained in his native Argentina. From another source: Fernando Lamas! - "When a person has an accent, it means he can speak one more language than you" - when Johnny Carson teased him about his accent during an appearance on The Tonight Show! Happy to hear from you, and thanks!
He did, and here are 3 from one other movie: ua-cam.com/video/NhMCW-_mO9k/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/sjC1C-ya_WA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/ZLGbY2lkFQk/v-deo.html Mr. Lamas was a fine singer! Enjoy! varadero
It's scary that anyone looking so good could sound even better! Did you see the comment from Ann's grandson? I'm pretty much on another planet after that! BTW, Fernando had a lovely voice and was not dubbed here. Guess I'm stating the obvious, and I suspect you already knew that!
@Rick36000 Hi Rick36000. I've never been sure why the year 1954 provided us with so many wonderful movies. I agree with you that this ranks among the top! Thank you so much for your comment, and best wishes!
You mean you never saw her slap, and punch-out Joan Crawford? That was in "Mildred Pierce!" I think she was only 15 then. The scene must be here on YT at least 26 times. I love her best for her exquisite voice, and for being the "tiniest" girl with the biggest voice I've ever heard. OK, maybe Jane Powell was her equal. Also, she was, and still is incredibly beautiful. If you have time please look here for Ann Blyth Castro. Now she's well into her 80's. She was late 70's then! Enjoy!
There's a showbiz legend about a young soprano who used this as an audition song, except that she literally sang the words: "When I'm calling you, double O, double O!"
Hi Mr. Carver! I posted this, and I'm still laughing! Thank you! Funny story from a friend, writer, music maven, and so on. Hoping to see a popular show at the time, he could only get Standing Room. He spotted a friend of his watching the show, went behind her and slapped her on the ass! She turned to him, grabbed him and they started laughing and kissing! Turns out she was dressed as a nun! She explained that her show, "The Sound of Music," had a different time for the matinee, and she wanted to see this show! Many jaws dropped! Best to you, varadero/john
Thanks Ms Chant! I agree! Many years after this was filmed I was lucky enought to meet beautiful Ann at a film, and interview shown at "The Castro" theater, here in San Francisco; think is was about 2007. They were both wonderful in the film. I hope you'll watch it all! Just hearing her sing the few bars from "Kismet," is worth the wait! ua-cam.com/video/Wd7m0TztdAA/v-deo.html
@hecate55 Mil gracias! I'm only suggesting that would have been the response from Fernando Lamas, as he was from The Argentine! Lovely Ann Blyth was a tiny beauty, with an enormous voice from my home town, New York City! Though born in Mt. Kisco, New York, she grew up around the corner from St. Patrick's Cathedral on 5th Avenue. I'm thinking you enjoyed this clip, but noting the "Zombie Jesus and Black Easter Bunny" leave me befuddled. Not to worry; that's my usual state. Nice to hear from you!
Hi Chris Johnson, Thanks for helping for the information regarding the purchase of this wonderful film. I think my info at the time was accurate, but I'm not sure. Again, you're very kind to have helped in finding this! Best wishes!
@varadero1839 How lucky you were to meet her. I am in the process of moving, but when I'm settled, I plan to write to Ms Blythe. I have an 8x10 autographed photo I received from her - I treasure it. I did see a few clips on YT - one of her getting out of the car - she looks as beautiful now as she has all of her life.
He was always good! Such a doubting Tomás! It's late, I'm tired, so just look on my site for the other songs where Mr. Lamas sings. Ann B was always brilliant! I'm happy to have heard from you. varadero
My Mom took my daughter to a photography studio Ann was there. She just fell in love with my baby girl and wanted to take her home ! When I tell my daughter that story she said, Mom you should have let her take me! BRAT!! LOL!
I love the song and the duet. Ann is still with us at 85. She has a beautiful voice and sings this song exceptionally well -- except she's not Jeanette MacDonald. Likewise, Fernando Lamas is not Nelson Eddy. This arrangement sounds like the 1936 version; the harmony seems the same. But the story is obviously different in the 1954 film. As good as Ann and Fernando are here, no one comes out ahead covering Jeanette and Nelson.
jJeanette and Nelson are more popular but I prefer this performance because its complete.The 1936 is sung cut.But all were excellent; Ann was born in 1928 so she is 90 this year;
Gracias, Despues de tantos golpes, me allegro de leer su mensaje! Los golpes son de otras personas, relacionados de otros de mis videos! Me quedo bien felíz a leer sus palabras! Un montón de gracias, varadero
Thanks so much for your comments. I posted this years ago, and had the opportunity to meet Ms. Blyth when she was a guest speaker here in San Francisco some years ago.
Hi Leo Rute, Just my opinion here, but I suspect he always sang beautifully but arrived in Hollywood at that peculiar time when less musicals were being produced. Sad for us I think. Please have a look at this one from another film; think you'll like it! ua-cam.com/video/NhMCW-_mO9k/v-deo.html Got others! Keep in touch, and best wishes. varadero
fernando silenzi Sono così felice di sentire da voi ! Mr. Lamas ci ha lasciato , ma bella signora Blyth è ancora vivo e talvolta ancora esegue ! Molte grazie per la scrittura ! varadero
What about Howard Keel He melts my heart especially in showboat When he sang Make Believe to can’t think of her name But you felt his emotion Didn’t feel that when he sang Rose Marie to Ms Bluth

HOW GRATEFUL WE SHOULD BE TO THESE WONDERFUL SINGERS OF THE 50'S WHO GAVE US HOURS OF ENTERTAINMENT IN FABULOUS MUSICALS MOVIES
Always, always loved Ann as for Lorenzo I fell in love at first sight . Am very Thankful I bumped into this clip.
I like this song and the video is good also. The film was made ten years before my own time but it is something worth seeing. Beautiful love story and a theme to match. Nice to hear and enjoy.

Bellissimo sentire questa musica intramontabile!
THANK YOU for posting this beautiful share.
+maureen1938
Hi maureen1938,
I'm so glad that you enjoyed this! Given the original film, with Jeanette and Nelson, I was surprised that anyone would even notice this rendition! Ann always had the loveliest voice, as did Mr. Lamas! Some have questioned his vocal talents, but he really was a superb singer! So glad to hear from you!
Best regards,
varadero
+varadero1839 The Jeanette and Nelson version isnt the original version of the musical. They changed the story like they did in this version too.
Beautiful. I think I saw this film as a child.
Magnificently done..!
I saw this movie when I was a little kid I remembered it when I saw the video. Memories...
+Len Cox
Hello Mr. Cox,
About 8 years ago I met Ms. Thanks so much for writing!
varadero
You have something to be proud of she is a good singer.
Both wonderful singers,
Love this! Thank you.
LYRICS to INDIAN LOVE CALL
Ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
So echoes of sweet love notes
Gently fall through the forest stillness
As the waiting Indian lovers call
When the lone lagoon stirs in the spring
Welcoming home some
Swannee white wing
When the maiden moon riding the sky
Gathers her star eyed dream
children nigh
That is the time of the moon and the year
When love dreams to Indian maidens appear
And this is the song that they hear
When I'm calling you ...I will answer you
That means I offer my love to you
To be your own
If you refuse me I will be blue
and waiting all alone
But if when you hear my love call ringing clear
And I hear your answering echo so dear
Then I will know our love will come true
You'll belong to me, I'll belong to you
Rita Taddeucci Raffanti Hello Rita Taddeucci Faffanti!
Best regards,
varadero

As.a matter of fact, Fernando LIKED Billy and that spot on impression!
As to the "nebbish" comment, MOST guys are unimpressive compared to the physical/vocal adonis Fernando was.
Varadeo 1839, Thank you so much for the post of the great and beautiful Ann Blyth
Hi barich3353. I’m a big fan of Ann Blyth myself. Grateful to hear from you: ua-cam.com/video/ZLGbY2lkFQk/v-deo.html and hope this link works!
He sounds marvelous.
He was! Few people believed that he was more than just a handsome guy! He was a fine actor, with an elegant singing voice! Glad you liked this! Here's another!

Thank you for introducing one of my favorite melodies. I have two disks of Country & Western,
one of which covers this song sung bySlim Whitman. Western music in the stage of the
musical seem somewhat different from those on the screen.
The musicals and the western movies are both very useful and enjoyable for the learner of English. Thanks again.
I have seen all her movies she gave so much too all of us!
remeber the first time i watched this.

+varadero1839 Thank you, i will have a look.
It is out on DVD through the Warner Archive Collection. You can find it at Warner Archives website, Movies Unlimited or Amazon
I am amazed, I never knew that Fernando Lamas was a singer. Did he ever sing in other movies?
He did, and here are 3 from one other movie:

Mr. Lamas was a fine singer! Enjoy!
varadero
he sang a couple times with Danielle Darrieux in RICH, YOUNG and PRETTY - you can find those scenes on youtube
It's scary that anyone looking so good could sound even better! Did you see the comment from Ann's grandson? I'm pretty much on another planet after that! BTW, Fernando had a lovely voice and was not dubbed here. Guess I'm stating the obvious, and I suspect you already knew that!
잊을수없는. 추억의. 영화. ㅡ녹색의 장원처럼
My Dad who died in 1989 aged 59 said this was the most beautiful song ether written.
Enjoy!
Love This Indian love call also mac &eddy And also a great one by ray stevens
Que buen intérprete fue Fernando Lamas. Saludos desde Argentina !!.
I know this song from my father❤️
What a surprise to see this clip.
Isn't this the same song that Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddie made famous in the 1936 movie "Rose Marie"?
VimalaNowlis Yep!
Best to you,
varadero/john
so awesome, my love call ringing clear.
Delighted to hear from you! Thanks so much for your comment!
Hooooo my goooood !!!! It’s soooooo beautiful !!!!!!
I've never heard of Ann Blyth until I saw her on those Hostess youtube commercials just now.
It's not easy. I don't have the whole film. I did find it on Amazon for around $50.00! I'll keep looking for you, and thanks for your question!
@varadero1839 Thanks for the info! Thisis great. I know Lamas also was a version of THE MERRY WIDOW. So he must have been trained as a singer too.
best Indian Love Call
My mother use sing this I sure miss her she calling me know. I miss my mommy
Beautiful
Thank you so very much! They are indeed such actually different people, yet here they couldn't have been better matched! You are very kind!
If the Dival´s voice was of Fernando Lamas, Its very good, Ann Blyth ever lovely.
He was always good! Such a doubting Tomás! It's late, I'm tired, so just look on my site for the other songs where Mr. Lamas sings. Ann B was always brilliant! I'm happy to have heard from you.
varadero
Wanderful
very good, VEDA
The film also had great roles for Marjorie Main and cowardly lion actor Bert Lahr
¡Ann Blyth, I love you!
back then when actors could actually sing, and music was still music and not noise.
we have that today, too. don't fall for the nostalgia fallacy.
Yea when entertainers could sing, & act without depending on vulgarity. & nudity.
@Milordvega I have 2 more of his songs from The Merry Widow on my channel. Please look for them, OK? I think you'll enjoy! Thanks so much for writing!
I really enjoy all 4 singers! The song is beautiful!
jJeanette and Nelson are more popular but I prefer this performance because its complete.The 1936 is sung cut.But all were excellent; Ann was born in 1928 so she is 90 this year;
It's Rose Marie thanks for posting it's lovely
Yes, she did.
Varadero1839 : Thanks!
Oh!

todo esto es marabilloso... verdad

Antonio Zepeda maravilloso..!
Days gone by
Thanks so much for your comments. I posted this years ago, and had the opportunity to meet Ms. Blyth when she was a guest speaker here in San Francisco some years ago.
Fernando Lamas has a good voice yet, to the best of my recollection, he was not known as a singer. Can anybody explain why not ?
Hi Leo Rute,
Just my opinion here, but I suspect he always sang beautifully but arrived in Hollywood at that peculiar time when less musicals were being produced. Sad for us I think. Please have a look at this one from another film; think you'll like it!

How are you my friend?
Where is Nelson when you need him 🙂
What about Howard Keel
He melts my heart especially in showboat
When he sang Make Believe to can’t think of her name
But you felt his emotion
Didn’t feel that when he sang Rose Marie to Ms Bluth
I loved her in Mildred Pierce!!!!
