This year I am hoping to take on my first ever half distance, this consists of a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride, and a 21.1km run. It's going to be a big challenge but luckily I have a secret weapon...

Great vid. Good luck in your training. 💪
You are going to smash the journey 💪👌
You’ll smash it, plenty of fitness base, plenty of resilience. Watch out for the nutrition and always aim to stay injury free … good luck!
Cheers! Yeah nutrition has always been the hardest thing for me, but I've been sticking to the plan and already down a few kg!
nice target! I did my first half last year after roughly 8 months of training, like you swimming was my weakest and at first even doing 100m was a serious effort and I remember it taking me almost 45 mins to do 1000m. after watching a ton of youtube videos (mostly total immersion related ones but also effortless swimming) I massively improved my endurance and surprisingly my speed too, even though I had basically stopped using my legs and lowered my stroke rate. my swimming still has a long way to go but I did the 1.9k in 31mins on the day which I was very happy with (top tip is to pick someone that seems to be swimming at a manageable pace and follow their feet).
my main tip is to get some open water practice in, I was totally unprepared for the blackness of swimming in a river (maybe your event will have nicer conditions) and it took a lot of mental control not to freak out and give up within the first few mins of chaos.
for the bike and run I'm sure you'll be fine if you follow the coaches advice. my personal recommendation is to get clip on aero bars and play with the setup until you can do long hours in the tt position without neck or back pain, and make sure to practice with them outside as it takes some getting used to! also recommend a hydration system of some sort (I got a profile design torpedo which I'm happy with) and I found carb mix easier to stomach and consume than gels on the bike.
Overall though if you can do a marathon and get your swimming technique to the point that swimming for 30 mins easy is not tiring you will do fine. I just did my first marathon in preparation for my first full and actually found it harder than the half triathlon even though the triathlon took 40mins longer
Best of luck!
1.9k in 31mins is proper fast! Hopefully I'll see some similar level of improvement!
I've found an open water lake to practice in, so I'll be heading down there sometime soon, luckily it's the same lake that the actual triathlon is in, so hopefully there's be less fear come race day!
I'm going to stay away from aero bars for this one, just because the race is on open roads, and with cars etc I'm a bit worried about having my hands away from the brakes.
