Back in the day with Falcon4 SP (Super pack series) and F4AF (Allied forces), pretty much everything was done through radar scope and Steer points to search and designate targets of opportunity for a mark! Mavericks were used as a a poor mans sniper pod with that limited scope ! Read "Vipers of the Storm" and that's exactly how they did it 1990 R/L !!

Kinda similar to the A-10C, although I don’t think they need to plug the mark point into the system (could be wrong though it’s been a while).

are you moving the cursor with the mouse?

I didn't, I use my HOTAS
