- The Dna version of Mercy street, in the collector edition of the 25th anniversary edition of so.
This edition is too expensive imho, so I've put this song on youtube for you to hear, hope you enjoy.

Love the saxophone
Even before the 25th Anniversary Edition of "So" with its most important piece, the So DNA CD, I got the feeling, there was a faint touch between Don't Break This Rhythm and Mercy Street , then we got the answer.
I don't agree with the above comments, this piece was worth every penny!
No, really, NO! This loses all the atmosphere, feeling and disturbing eeriness of the original (the disturbance created, in part, by one part of it being almost imperceptibly out of time with the rest). Why swap subtlety for a clanging mess?
You do realise that all the material you're hearing here came BEFORE the version on the album, right? This shows all the raw demo ideas that gradually became refined and evolved into the version you know. That's why it's called the "DNA" version.
@@johnhodgetts6617 I did, yes. I just don't understand why they would put such a mishmash of inferior content into the public domain, having originally decided to improve on it. As part of a documentary exploring the creative process, the various components would be interesting, but I hate the combined track. I see a few comments to the contrary, but that was just my instant reaction.
@@moragmckay3779 Well yes, I believe that was the intention, to provide insight into Peter Gabriel's creation process. The DNA CD was just one part of a collectors edition box set. They pulled several songs on the album apart like this. Still, if you don't like it, that's your opinion.
We have to lose that sax solo!
Interesting mutation this track underwent. I wonder if that was Dick Morrissey supplying the saxophone bit between 5:15 & 6:04
Let's take the boat out...🌊🐬🐬🌊🌊🌊🎼🎶🎶💜

that saxophone bit sounds like William Orbit
There is a William Orbit version of the song, used as a B-side, though I can't remember what the A-side was. (I have it somewhere among my 12,000 singles , including many rare Peter Gabriel releases I acquired 2nd-hand, but have not had a record player for years.)I was surprised to find it really grew on me.
That's funny because I've never heard William Orbit using saxophone in any of his music
Look up Ann Sexton's piece called "45 Mercy Street", which this song is inspired from.
While working in a bookshop, I also found a book of interviews with female writers, including Anne Sexton. Much of what she says in it is quoted directly in the lyrics.
1985.
