His track Father and Son, such a reminder of how family will experience dementia and face it and find a way of [sometimes] undoing part of the effect. My father had a stroke in 2016, although he just lost the control of his right hand, over the next 12 months he got it 98% back. He had to teach his hand how to operate, and he did it with playing cards and squeezing a ball. Every day, for 365 days.
There is a gravitas to this song that is missing with the lightness of the orchestration and harmony. The darker undercurrent of the images that might be conjured by, say - a poem by Anne Sexton, is missing. This can be a good way to go, but I'd up the cello and use the male voice as the harmony. The magic of the song is found, in my view - in the kind of reflected meaning in the harmony, and the way that the original version throws you into that kind of 'let's take the boat out' (wait until darkness) kind of feel. Otherwise, good song. Love it.
Thank God for the poets. Would that we all had the ears to hear.
The long journey, accumulated terrors and suffering has shaken the stoutest of hearts among us. May God Bless Peter Gabriel.
