Are Oxygen Absorbers Necessary? 15-Year-Old White Rice Comparison

  • Oxygen absorbers are a great tool to extend the shelf life of dry goods. But what happens if you don't use them? In this video, we have a rare opportunity to compare identical white rice that was packaged at the same time in 2007. Both were stored in a #10 can. One with an oxygen absorber and one without. The results surprised us.
You can purchase #10 cans of dry goods from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Home Storage Center. It is a great way to economically build your food supply. Find one near you at this link providentlivin...

Interesting. Thank you for this video Jonathan and Kylene. I have found my meat stored in cans on the basement cement floor had rusted through ever so slightly. I noticed this by an odor. All cans above were great, saved and freeze dried after easily scooping the separated fat off the top of the canned meat. I now do not put any cans on the concrete floor, even in cardboard boxes as these were, I originally thought that the cardboard would protect them. All of the lower cans with exterior rust I disposed of. This was a costly and smelly learning experience. Happy trails!

I found a different kind of bug in my rice. It wasn't the larger weevil but a tiny little almost clear colored bug. It was about the size of a little sugar ant. They were hard to see and I found them at the bottom of the container. It affected the appearance and smell of the rice so I threw it out. Definitely use the absorbers from now on. I think you're aging beautifully btw.

At my cabin in Northern MN I just put 25 pound bags of wheat in metal garbage cans, no oxygen absorber. But the cabin is cold storage, frozen for six months. I also have a years supply of LDS food in cans with oxygen absorbers. Also have 50 pound bags of rice and beans from Sam's club in mylar with no oxygen absorbers. I would just powder the beans, rice, and wheat and cook as cream of wheat or Fameal if an emergency. Better to have it and not need it. Protect yourself.

I'm wondering if coating the cans when they are new would not be a good way to go, that is, a non-toxic paint, or even a clear finish shellac, etc, even a light coat of mineral oil to prevent rust. This is something I've already planned for living on my sailboat, especially in the humid-saltwater environment that exists. Just a thought.

Oxygen absorbers remove oxygen to prevent oxidation. Once oxygen combines with something to oxidize it, it is no longer available to combine with anything else to oxidize it.
You put the rice in an air tight container.
With an absorber the oxygen is quickly removed. Without it, some oxidation will take place but then stop as no more oxygen is introduced into the can.
Time wouldn't matter much at all, especially over longer time frames.
Most things don't need oxygen absorbers, the absorbers simply preserve some of the freshness that would be lost from the initial oxygen in the can.

We also in addition to the customary prayer, we had our little Shed of food storage "Blessed". Sooo a lot of stuff that was waaay over 25 yrs (I still have some of the wheat and a few other grains), are still usable in an emergency and will fill tummies but probably not as nummy.
