    I would have closed the trunk lid before drilling, the movement of the lid could have caused slipping, you were lucky

    • @specONE
      @specONE 5 років тому +4

      I didn't close the trunk fully because I was more scared of the drill slipping and scratching the quarter panels. Slipping on the trunk, the spoiler would just cover my mess up. Plus all the Metal shavings I did not want to fall onto other painted panels. That is why I draped a moving blanket over all those panels That was my thought process at the time. People attempting this should definitely close their trunk before drilling if that makes them feel more comfortable, but for me it wasn't.

    I can't believe that template cost close to $100 CDN, it should be included with the spoiler.
    If you ever have to do this again, close the trunk! Less chances of the drill slipping.
    Also, they sell drill bit stoppers, regardless, great job!

    Great job man! The two middle holes on the edge are scary. Jeez! Question for you though. Can those two bolts/clips on the inner part of the spoiler be removed? I ask this because I am wondering if I can just drill the two outer parts and then line the entire midle edges with 3M tape. I have a feeling that would be more than enough to keep it on, down and flush. I am very hesitant to drill those middle holes. Side ones are a piece of cake.

It's been a few years now since your install. How has the spoiler held up, I know one concern about drilling holes into a trunk, is the fear of getting water in there when it rains, causing mold. the second question ..
    I’ve seen some videos on UA-cam about using a key fob to start the engine ... so I tried to use the key fob to start the engine .. but it didn’t work . 😬 maybe it just works on other Lexus models except IS .. don’t you think ?

Yeah might be easier to drill the holes with it fully latched and close but it didn't effect me so i just drilled like i normally do.

      There are alot of exhaust options. On my car personally I have a F-sport axle back exhaust. I also have a Tsudo midpipe I need to get on the car one day.

    So the oem spoiler has to be drilled in?

    • @specONE
      @specONE 6 років тому

      +Oscar Nieto the correct way Lexus does it yes. It can be tape only but there is chance to run into issues like I did with it lifting up in very hot days with very strong sun hitting it

      Rodney Au I work at a automotive manufacturing facility I can say I’ve not seen every department but we take every precaution to not add any holes after the ED bath. I’ve made stamping dies for deck lids and we’ve never had a pierce hole option for spoilers. I work for Toyota/Lexus

    • @specONE
      @specONE 4 роки тому

      +abidingcitizen , Lexus Supplied instructions for Lexus Technicians at dealership instruct to drill holes to mount the spoiler. This is a OEM spoiler purchase from Lexus.

      Rodney Au currently waiting to get an official answer from someone within the company. The person I spoke with thinks they know the process but wasn’t 100% sure. They said the vehicle is built and taken to the marshaling yard where a separate company applies the “upgraded” parts. Be it blacked out or gold emblem packages to spoilers. Toyota nor Lexus manufacturers penetrate the body of the vehicle outside the normal stamping process. So basically dealers or who ever can take on that task after the cars manufactured. When I bought my wife her IS the spoiler was a option, had we taken it the dealer would’ve installed. If we built the Lexus and had a spoiler added the task would’ve probably taken place after the vehicle got into the marshaling yard. As I said I’ve been around the facility but I’m sure I’ve not seen it all but I have seen the adesigning and machining of stamping dies, body weld and paint departments and final assembly. I’ve only passed the marshaling yard I’ve never been in it.

    If you removed the screws and relied only on the adhesive that came on the spoiler, do you think it would hold? Thanks

    • @specONE
      @specONE 6 років тому +1

      +J Rohr818 it will since it's very light and that is how I had it before. But over time if you park the car in the sun on a very hot day like a heatwave the plastic spoiler changes shape due to the extreme heat and it starts to move a little bit and lifts up, the tape alone couldn't keep it held down. A drawback to the light and thin material that it changes shape in the heat. That is why I bought another one and decided to drill holes and bolt it on just like how OEM did.

      There is a 1/16 inch space between the Spoiler and the trunk were the double sided tape is located.

    i rather use 3m tape and risk loosing the spoiler in the highway than drill my trunk no thank you

    • @specONE
      @specONE 5 років тому

      3m tape wasn't strong enough to keep the spoiler in place during very hot days, it would keep lifting at the corners. I was sick of it so I drill it doesn't. I had it taped before and retaped it multiple times before I gave up on it
