A lot of people complain this video is too fast but she covers a LOT of information in a clear way. If you miss something, rewatch the section you missed and google whatever you don't understand. Put SOME work into watching this video, she clearly put a lot of work into making it.
I am very happy with this workshop-in-a-youtube. My D800E hardly ever get used and there's an ocean of features I haven't yet touched since buying it in 2014 so I am glad to have a sensei forever frozen in time to help me grok all of this. Thank you so much Nice Lady Productions
You are an encyclopedic mentor! Shazaam! I’m an educator, and I have never listened to any speaker/lecturer/presenter who was so intellectually prepared with such spot-on, pure content, totally undiluted, no unnecessary information, like 99.999% just-what-you-needed-when-you-needed-it stuff. Oh, and you have very nice hands!
I've been watching D800 videos for months in advance of a purchase, and I must say that this video has to be one of the best out there on the subject. You touch upon subject rarely covered in other reviews, and do so in a very concise way. Thank you for creating this.
I've watched hundreds of videos, tutorials & reviews for various items over the years. Nice Lady Productions, I feel, has just raised the bar for professional reviews and Google University general knowledge. Thank you.
Nice lady....I must say..out of all of the D800 reviews,,,,,,yours is the one that is most informative, precise, and actually shows us clear examples and a top notch, hands on experience...plus you know what you are doing...I am very impressed and thank-you for sharing your knowledge with us. It was based upon your review that I have decided upon this camera. Thanks!
I've only done stills with my D800 and soon to be shooting short vids on location. This in depth look at the camera operation for video has helped me get a good grasp of the technique I need to address.
hey you know why your video on this review is so good? Because it's based on your own personal experience. You didn't quote specs, or repeat what other people noted. They are all from your own observations and that's so important. Like how you picked up on the aperature click noise within the camera. Most people wouldn't have bothered to mention that, but you noticed it. That's what I like and look for and can't find others who spot things like that. Thank you
I have been using the 800e and the. 810 for still work for years. You knowledge of video is amazing. Just playing with video now. Tha k you so much. Your a badass.
I just bought this camera and intend to use it to shoot some of the scenes in my thesis film. Thank you for this comprehensive and professional review. You come across as articulate, knowledgeable and refreshingly humble. The best camera review video I've seen yet!
Brilliant... thank you for being so thorough I had no ideas of some of the capabilities of my camera!!! Maybe just taking a few more seconds to be really clear how to access the difference functionality would have been nice , but still very good video.
great video review You can get the nikon d800 on sale now on www.dslrcam.net/new/nikond800 for anyone looking for this model They also have the e models for sale. Pair this up with a prime lens and you got a winner.
Comprehensive, detailed, precise, knowledgeable and pleasantly easy to assimilate "Hands-On" breakdown of the Video controls & abilities of the Nikon D800/800e DSLR. Bravo!!! Thank you so much for making this Video, it was perfect for me as I have been all Nikon for 25 years, but this D800e is my 1st DSLR w/Video, so I motion capture at a 3rd grade level !! But, Really,...GREAT delivery of the many aspects of the D800's Sound, Slo-Mo, focus, WB, K-temp, HDR, etc, etc. "& No Marbles in Mouth"!
8:53 Great autofocus setting. As you said, most times I don't have time to manually focus, and I certainly don't want to end up with out of focus footage.
Gotta say, this is a great informational video! I’m a professional Architectural photographer that wants to start adding video to my mix of services. The D810 is indeed a phenomenal camera, and your video has given me a lot of useful information. Your narrative is clear and easy to understand, and you don’t rush through your presentation. Thank you for a very good explanation of the amazing things that we can do with this camera.
Hey Jeff, I'm so glad the video helped you out. The D810 is an awesome camera and the video capabilities are excellent for an already full featured camera. Keep shooting!
Excellent video, I am blown away how good and simple you drove me through the topics. I just bought that camera because I needed a camera I could make some nice footage of my kids and still use it for landscape photography. Your video gave me that last little peace of mind that I did the right purchase. Thanks much and stay healthy. Miguel
Good straight intro to the D800. I bought mine last year and I love it. I'm inspired by it. Just starting to shoot video. I find the focusing is very hard to control while shooting, so I just use manual focus or lock the autofocus. For white balance the user's manual says auto works best except in certain indoor situations but I'll look into that. With exposure modes, I'm still clueless. I just set a useful aperture. I'm shooting with the Nikkor AF-S 85 1.4G and the AF-S 50 1.4G. I'm overwhelmed by the results of these lenses. Thanks for the accessory recommendations. An external monitor is almost certainly necessary. At the end of the day, what you have to say to the world (hopefully something noble) is what really matters, the D800 won't limit your endeavors.
thank you for being so candid and clear I appreciate another females point of view.. I am a photographer/videographer and am researching which camera to buy.. I did not see any morrey sorry about the spelling on the frame you said had a little bit of that.. so my question is would the nikon d800 work for a Television broadcast? as b roll would it work for DVD made for business promotion any thoughts ? I just got a D800 and by watching this video I learned that there's a LOT more to this camera than I thought. I guess it's safe to say that I am now ready to sell off all my other cameras, except I'll keep one of my D200s as a backup and second camera for when its limitations aren't a problem.
Thank you nice lady for clearing up a few issues I had with understanding video settings. I have worked as a teacher but have never put a point across so succinctly - and charmingly!! I am non-technical so your style of presentation was perfect for me. I am now able to use my new camera for its intended purpose of shooting videos for our bands website. P.S: I am really impressed by the D800e.
Great, good work.! you didn't notice a lot of difference in quality with the ninja even on post? and what is the files size compare to write on camera cards? Thanks.
I have the D800e. Though discontinued, it is still a great camera. I have hardly used video on it, but a friend needed a favor, and I needed to brush up on it. Thank you very much for posting such wonderful information!
Wow! Fantastic video! Thank you for taking the time to extensively walk us through the capabilities of the NIkon D800 series. I have a D810, myself, but I am very, very far from doing it justice, in video mode.
Thanks you made my choice! I’m going to get a D800 or D810.. my mind is made up! I’m hoping to use it with the Tascam DR60 mkII digital audio mic system. I want separate sound and picture. Also what’s the Matt Box on the lens your using and The external monitor? Thanks
I absolutely loved your review. I have a 35mm 1.8G and I was planning to get a Sigma 85mm 1.4. Do you think that it would be a problem to record video with the Sigma lens??
Thanks for the Video-I have the D800 but I don't know how to record video, on which card can I record the Video >>on the small Card =?? I keep my photos in the big one = Greetings Juan-Spain, Granada
Hello. Thank you for your video. I have now Nikon D800, and usually I'm shooting events and recording video. But I guess this camera is not useful for reportage or video. So what you can advice me, maybe I should buy Canon 5D Mark3 or 6D, maybe Nikon D750? What do you think? Or should I leave my D800 and buy some new lenses?
Great training video. What lens to you suggest for doing video? I have two 2.8 lens (80-200 and 17-55 and the 18-200 3.5-5.6 and the 50 mm lens. Thank you, Big Bruno
Nice tutorial, going to get an 800 next month. Hope you have more to show us on the D 800, where did you learn all this, you really seem to know what you are talking about, great job. GGD....
thanks for your excellent personal review ...I'm just about to purchase the D800. shooting video auto focus (sometimes ) on the 7000 is annoying with the internal continual focusing noise....is the 800 any different? Would you recommend a Rode mike,as a extra? What equipment would you use for focus preview, over the LV screen? john
Yes, you can use old Nikon lenses on the D800 without issue. If you program in the lens in the non-cpu menu, it will even confirm focus on the lens for you and metering. Cheers.
Thanks for your feedback. The D800 and D600 are so close in comparison, it would be a hard choice to make for sure. I like the small size of the D600 and it has wifi capabilities for triggering from an iPad etc. Unlike the D600, the D800 has the ability to change the Aperture in Live View Video using the back dial for standard lenses, which is a non issue if you use lenses with a manual lens barrel. D800 has massive RAW image file sizes, which is good and bad, and is more money. Both great!
Hi, great video really informative. My D800 is arriving tomorrow and I need to use it at the weekend. I've never shot video before and I was wondering if there was a way of shooting in 1080p and then converting to slow motion. Would this essentially be the same as shooting at 60fps in 720? Or would there be a benefit to slowing it down in post?
I haven't yet played with the video on my D800, and this was a nice refresher of the issues I'll deal with when using the camera for video. One thing that keeps me from using the D800 for video is that I find the need for multi camera angles during recording and to have extra D800's laying around for that is a bit pricey So I end up using some decent Point-n-Shoots to allow the video quality between cameras to be comparable when editing the footage later between camera angles.
Great camera review, ive had my D800 for over 12 months but done little video work with it. I particularly found interesting you bring the external HD recorder which was something i had wanted to look into so for me its been useful on many levels. Looking forward to seeing some of your other videos now..keep it up...Brian UK
thanks,,,my d810 has a lot of noise in video mode at iso 400 and above, even with flat profile picture,,,,how did you get those clean night footage? is there a secret setting to it?
Great video tips! Thank you. Is it possible for you to create a follow-up video specifically "focused" on the AF-S mode? I have always struggled with using my D800 to make video clips (blurry, out of focus shots). We are about to travel abroad and prefer to bring just the D800 rather than the D800 and a my vidcam (Canon XA20 HD). Yes, I will lose the HD option, but we are trying to limit the number of equipment that we can carry. Thank you in advance.
I would recommend the Nikon D7100. The D7000 is a fantastic camera and the D7100 is even better. It has the right amount of professional features for when you get more advanced, while being simple to use. Good luck!
Lots of "why?" questions, but I'll be spending more time figuring out how to get decent video results with my D810, thanks to you. I'm shocked that you got the results you have!
Again great instructional video but two things; how big of cards to have and how long do they record in hours and how many batteries to have and how long do they last in hours? Weddings, ballgames, events. I want maximum quality.
Have a D800 and have been wanting to find the answer to this question so your help will be greatly appreciated - I'm shooting my daughter play her piano in an evening indoor setting - As a general rule, what ISO, F stop, and shutter speed (assuming 1/60 secs) to use? Also what WB and Focus modes to use? I will probably be on a monopod. Nothing very specific...just looking for general guidance. Thanks in advance for your help!!
Hoping you will see this comment even though this video was posted years ago! I have the Nikon d810. Shooting video with auto focus has been frustrating because of two reasons I’m hoping you can help with - First, the camera is constantly refocusing. I was trying to get video of my newborn moving around on the bed and the camera kept focusing and refocusing. Sometimes it gave off a cool effect but it was mostly just frustrating. Second, when refocusing, it always makes a sound, which is the oicked up by the internal microphone and ends up in my video when I play it back. So back to the video of my newborn, it’s hard to hear him cooing because all I can hear is the camera refocusing. What can I do to fix these issues? Thank you.
With shooting slow motion using 720p at 60fps, is it good practice to shoot all footage from then on for that movie using 720p or can you go back up to 1080p at 25fps etc?
Thank you for a wonderful and informative video. I have just bought the d7100 and played around with the movie mode. The microphones pick up lots of noise from the focusing of the lenses. How can I avoid that ? It is very frustrating.
The main way people record audio when shooting with DSLRs is to shoot audio separately, using an audio recorder and mic that are mounted away from the camera. If you didn't want to do this and you wanted to record the audio internally, even mounting a mic ontop of the camera and plugging it into the camera would help separate the noise (I have a review of a really cool Shure mic that is small and can also record audio separately, as well as in the camera). OR you could manually focus the lens (which cuts out a lot of noise), OR use a follow focus on the lens, which cuts out noise from hand gestures OR you could use autofocus to record at the start of the scene only, OR just edit the noise out. Depends on what works or what you want, but there are some tips. Cheers.
Thanks very much for this review, caveman people like me appreciate it very much. I've got few questions, I'm kind of lost and I really could use some advise. I've got a Nikon D800 and I'm planning to shoot a low light music video, I want to use slow motion for some of the images so ideally I guess 1920x1080 60fps will be ideal. Does this camera have this option? If not, which one would you recommend me? I've watch few tutorials about it and apparently every time you change your image area settings (FX, 1.2X, DX or 5:4), you should have new options for frame size in movie settings but that's not the case on my camera, I always have the same options ( 1920x1080 30fps to 1080x 720 25fps). No matter which crop option I use, my frame size options does not give me any extras ones as I've seen on other videos. Someone told me I may have some settings activated that may been causing the options not to appear, any ideas? Thanks for your time! ... and I apologies for my bad english. Thanks again!.
Hi. The D800 maxes at 30fps in 1080p. The most you can do for slow-motion is to shoot it at 30 and slow it down in post to 24fps (like put it on a 24fps timeline and conform the frame rate). That's what I would do to a a slight slow motion to your footage. Or shoot 720p at 60fps but to be honest, that's too low quality now a days. My suggestion is rent another camera for that shoot or rent one to shoot the slow mo and use your D800 to film a second angle and normal speed.
Nice review, would have liked to see more comparisons between the 800 and 800e as far as detail goes, like when shooting your Chihuahua to see if the lack of an AA filter yields better detail in his coat for the 800e. I also would like to watch more of the soccer game and am glad you included audio -- felt like I was there for a second.
I really learned a lot by watching your review of this Nikon DSLR for video. I disagree with other reviewers saying you spoke too fast, I thought your pace was perfect. Thank you for showing me what the potential was of this camera, as well as a few of the shortcomings. I had been contemplating the Nikon D800E, switching over from Canon after so many years (since shooting 35mm film, then digital). I am, primarily, a photographer, but I do enjoy filming video as well and helpful videos such as yours really inspire me to do more of the same. Do you still shoot with this Nikon D800E (now 5-1/2 years after you recorded this video)?
Thank you for the excellent tutorial, very informative and succinct. I use a D800 with Ninja2 and it produces great video quality. Also I did not fins any issues as others have reported that you cannot have cards in the memory slots if you want HD quality. Same is true for the D4. What I found to be a disadvantage on the Ninja2 is the lack of remote control, at least to start and stop. Other than that it is great for my 800mm f5.6 lens as well as wide field shots with 24-70mm zoom.
Nikon D800 - I have cam’s auto focus sound while recording video. Even I used extra microphone (ME-1) I still can hear auto focusing sound. Do you have any idea?
Awesome review! really covered allot of useful information! Im curious how much storage is on that HDMI recorder? And how many minutes of HD footage can you film on say a 32gb SD card?
thank you for this video i do video production but want a camera for photography and it looks like the d800 is good for both thank you so much and its DR is a great addition from this camera i have subscibe your videos gives great value
love it thanks... question is the 50mm 1.8 a good lens to video. or what u suggest. im here in belize and lens are really limited and costly to import....
Yes the 50mm 1.8 is a nice sharp lens (depending on how well the lens was taken care of). If you can test it on your camera before buying (program it as a non-CPU lens, then test the focus confirmation and final image) you'll know you're getting a lens without focusing issues. There are better 50mm out there but for the price you can't go wrong.
Best lens to use for video for a full frame camera would depend on what focal length you want. I'd say a 35mm or 50mm would be great for doc work. 35 f1.8G or 50 f1.8G. If you can afford it or can rent it, the 2.8 24-70 zoom lens from Nikon would be fantastic for doc work.
A lot of people complain this video is too fast but she covers a LOT of information in a clear way. If you miss something, rewatch the section you missed and google whatever you don't understand. Put SOME work into watching this video, she clearly put a lot of work into making it.

At last a video which deals well with telling you how to use the focus whilst in video mode on this range of cameras. Thank-you so much!
I just bought this camera and intend to use it to shoot some of the scenes in my thesis film. Thank you for this comprehensive and professional review. You come across as articulate, knowledgeable and refreshingly humble. The best camera review video I've seen yet!

Yes Danil! I am and it does perform well. I'm happy with it for now and for the run and gun work I do.

Great Job! What is a good universal lens to use to shoot video with the D800.
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me get the most out of my D800e. Video is certainly more challenging than still.

Or would there be a benefit to slowing it down in post?
I haven't yet played with the video on my D800, and this was a nice refresher of the issues I'll deal with when using the camera for video. One thing that keeps me from using the D800 for video is that I find the need for multi camera angles during recording and to have extra D800's laying around for that is a bit pricey So I end up using some decent Point-n-Shoots to allow the video quality between cameras to be comparable when editing the footage later between camera angles.
excellent tips and tutorial thank you very much from Montréal
Great camera review, ive had my D800 for over 12 months but done little video work with it. I particularly found interesting you bring the external HD recorder which was something i had wanted to look into so for me its been useful on many levels. Looking forward to seeing some of your other videos now..keep it up...Brian UK
Thank you thank you
Thank you very much very impressed. I want to buy lens like yours may you tell me its name and specifications. I need it for aerial video shooting.
Awesome Video, im on the fence about a d600 vs d800 and have been looking for information about video capabilities only, and this made me happy
thanks,,,my d810 has a lot of noise in video mode at iso 400 and above, even with flat profile picture,,,,how did you get those clean night footage? is there a secret setting to it?
Good luck!
Very Nice Video Recording, thanks for Sharing
looks good but how long can you videos and what type of lens are you using ?
great vid! for slow motion how do you play back @ 24 fps? all pp or can you do it on camera? Also do you use adobe to edit your vids?
Lots of "why?" questions, but I'll be spending more time figuring out how to get decent video results with my D810, thanks to you. I'm shocked that you got the results you have!
Great review! really gave me a bigger understanding in how and what i can do in video mode!
Pleasant voice, straight to the point. Great Video.
Thank you for this helpful video! But, what do you mean with levels? w/levels? does it mean white balance levels?
Great review, I have the D7100 and hoping to use some of your tips from this.
hi there... i wanted to know if it's possible to use it as a webcam... thank you
One of the best reviews ever seen, thank you very much for the amazing efforts and info
Thank you.
Hello! Is the lens Tokina Nikon 11-16 mm F/2.8 AT-X Pro DX for nikon d800 podaydet? it is not cropped?
Cheers.
Nice Lady Productions Thank you very much.
Excellent video with a lot of information. Good sound.
Thank you. You are an educator.
That was great you've done an excellent job you tot me a thing or two................. Or 10 great review thank you
Usefull review.
When I shoot in DX mode instead FX mode both 1080p, I have seen a poor image quality in DX,. What's wrong?
Thanks!
I haven't come across any issues with shooting the D800 in DX mode, except that in introduces more moire patterns.
Thanks very much!
This was very helpful, I'm excited to see that you gave this camera / video such a good review, you def know your stuff !!!
Thanks for watching! Glad I could be of help. Thanks for the comment.
Very detail video -- super helpful in evaluating if D800 is up for the task, video-wise. Thank you for the time you put in making this. :)
Excellent review, very helpful. Thanks! Really wish it had better AF during video though.
I have a D600 so this was very useful to me. My issue is the "motor noise" that arises when I refocus while shooting,.. How do you get around that?
Awesome review! really covered allot of useful information!
Im curious how much storage is on that HDMI recorder? And how many minutes of HD footage can you film on say a 32gb SD card?
thank you for this video i do video production but want a camera for photography and it looks like the d800 is good for both thank you so much and its DR is a great addition from this camera i have subscibe your videos gives great value
Thanks, Great review of the camera, and very helpful. I'm sure i'll watch it several times to let it all sink in. :)
love it thanks... question is the 50mm 1.8 a good lens to video. or what u suggest. im here in belize and lens are really limited and costly to import....
Nice Lady Productions thanks alot appreciate it.
Hi, is it possible to get the same IQ from the D7100? Greetings!
Really great video. I can't wait to get my hands on one!
Lame!! It's a all about Sony SLT cameras for video! ;-)
James Lynch BULLSHIT. Please tell me you're joking
Very impressed with your review and how professional you are with the presentation. Great job!!
Thanks, Q, Best lens to use for video if there is a best! (short documentary)
