thanks for the supernice on my voodoo gravel conversion. i picked the from and fork up about 4 years ago with the idea of building a gravel bike out what was a cheap hybrid bike, threw some nice parts on it. sram apex 1x12, hope brakes etc. it's basically the same geometry as the Merida Silex that won the gravel world champs i looked it up when it was mentioned in that show..

What I think of Hill Climbs? I never in a million years would have thought my 74kg butt would find that to be my strength when I first started cycling and had to push my bike up a local hill (which counts so little that it doesn't even have a Strava segment). Then I started doing the HERD hill climb race on Zwift...and winning in the A cat. Then taking or coming close to most local KOMS this last Summer.
GCN says disc brakes are faster going up hill despite being heavier, less aero, and braking not used going up hill. GCN has jumped the shark and can't be taken seriously.
At least do some research before you spout your nonsense. There are so many wind tunnel data sets showing discs (in the correct position) are more aero than rim brake (even behind the fork). Also, the course had a downhill section in which every single competitor used their brakes to some extent. Ed laverec, 2nd by large margin and not sponsored also chose to ride discs. You rim brake cultists are like flat earthers. Go learn something.

for the proposed international hill climb championship, have the climbers duplicate Emma Pooleys unofficial 1 hour record climb and ask one of the OPEC nations to fund the event. In the video she rode up Jabel Achdar in Oman. It would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for any climber - esp. if GCN could create the opportunity. Invite the Guinness folks and you can make it an official record event.
I guess you can make a rim brake bike SLIGHTY lighter but it's a very small percentage of the weight of bike and rider. Other issues could be disc brake rub but you can set them up with more clearance. You can also technically make a disc brake wheel rim stiffer, more aero and lighter.

I can feel the difference, even though it has only been a few short weeks. The virtual reality of riding routes around the world is also fun. The question I have is about hard sprints and out of the saddle hill climbs. I am concerned that the forces on the bike clamped into a smart trainer are markedly different than when riding on the road. What are the risks of me doing real damage to my frame? Low risk as long as you aren't trying to throw it side to side as you might on the road. You could always invest in or build a rocker plate for under it, which would help.

@gcntech I see lightweight was much faster in hill and aero was not that much faster in straight as light was in the hill.but is talking about aero that's what I see after some upgrades that i did to my carbon bike (scott addict 30 2020) I realize that the crankset wheels and cassette it's mater a lot my bike was entry level when I buy that at 8.600 kilo after the upgrades I did now is 7.570 kilo keep in mind the wheels is aluminum and I will do 2 more upgrades that will make the bike 7.320 kilo for the budget of 2200 bucks it's very good. If you have to buy aero bike you will pay some 5.000 bucks and far more than that for bike much heavier from that I build so i don't believe aero is everything
Thru axles are NOT stiffer! The clamping force, which accounts for most of the stiffness, is actually higher with quick release axles. So lets say that we have a road bike with rim brakes in 7.900 kilo and road bike with disc brake at 8.400 kilo you tell me that 8.400 kilo you made no sense rim is faster very simple

@gcntech I see lightweight was much faster in hill and aero was not that much faster in straight as light was in the hill.but is talking about aero that's what I see after some upgrades that i did to my carbon bike (scott addict 30 2020) I realize that the crankset wheels and cassette it's mater a lot my bike was entry level when I buy that at 8.600 kilo after the upgrades I did now is 7.570 kilo keep in mind the wheels is aluminum and I will do 2 more upgrades that will make the bike 7.320 kilo for the budget of 2200 bucks it's very good. If you have to buy aero bike you will pay some 5.000 bucks and far more than that for bike much heavier from that I build so i don't believe aero is everything

Whith backlighting, use flash from the front.
Thru axles are NOT stiffer!
The clamping force, which accounts for most of the stiffness, is actually higher with quick release axles.
The point of thru axles is to more easily align the disc the same way in the brake caliper when changing wheels.

Quick release is garbage. Way less aero
Hold up, if that Aston Martin bike has the disc calipers molded to the frame... RIP eliminating disc rubbing when doing maintenance!
