    What are your thoughts on Feather’s hill climb power & choice to use disc brakes? 🤔

    • @empyreanw0w0w
      @empyreanw0w0w Рік тому +37

      He is using a disc break bike, because Cannondale is sponsoring him with a LAB edition Supersix. It's quite simple.
      If Cannondale made the same bike with rim breaks, he'd be using that, but they aren't, so there you go.

      As above Feather is in a deal with cannondale which you guys obviously know 🤦‍♂️....
      Feather also has a race weight for climb season so why would he pick a heavier disc bike to race up a hill....

    So let me get Ollie's contradiction straight....the extra dead weight of the disc brakes does not matter because it only slows you down by 0.9 seconds per 100 grams, but weight is everything because the race is typically won by one or two seconds, so the bike is then fitted with the most awesome tubs to reduce weight added by the dic brakes LOL.

    Rim brakes can be aero, and the weight savings matter more for less powerful people, right? And even for Feather, it doesn’t seem that rim brakes would have made him slower. His bike sponsor also gave him a disc brake bike.

    • @BirdmanDeuce26
      @BirdmanDeuce26 Рік тому +10

      At least do some research before you spout your nonsense. There are so many wind tunnel data sets showing discs (in the correct position) are more aero than rim brake (even behind the fork). Also, the course had a downhill section in which every single competitor used their brakes to some extent. Ed laverec, 2nd by large margin and not sponsored also chose to ride discs. You rim brake cultists are like flat earthers. Go learn something.

In the video she rode up Jabel Achdar in Oman. It would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for any climber - esp. if GCN could create the opportunity. I guess you can make a rim brake bike SLIGHTY lighter but it's a very small percentage of the weight of bike and rider. Other issues could be disc brake rub but you can set them up with more clearance. You can also technically make a disc brake wheel rim stiffer, more aero and lighter.

    #ASKGCN
    First, thanks for a great show I am an avid fan and follower of everything published through GCN, GCN Tech and GCN+.
    As a recent settler to the US Chicagoland area from Belgium I found it much more difficult to cycle throughout the year. So, as I head into another Chicagoland winter in 2023 I have decided to invest in a Smart Trainer so that I can ride yearlong, and have been on my first few test rides and am enjoying the structure of Intervals and zone specific training. I can feel the difference, even though it has only been a few short weeks. The virtual reality of riding routes around the world is also fun. The question I have is about hard sprints and out of the saddle hill climbs. I am concerned that the forces on the bike clamped into a smart trainer are markedly different than when riding on the road. What are the risks of me doing real damage to my frame? I have an older aluminium frame bike, KTM Astrada 2008.
    Thanks again, WayneT

    Ratchets are great, until you inevitably lose the most useful bits.
    The Topeak Mini 9 has a 6mm to 8mm hex adaptor just waiting to fall off or get misplaced. And you CAN'T buy a replacement.

    So lets say that we have a road bike with rim brakes in 7.900 kilo and road bike with disc brake at 8.400 kilo you tell me that 8.400 kilo you made no sense rim is faster very simple

      Does lightweight always mean faster though? We've done some test to see how aerodynamics effect your overall speed and effort, we think you'll be surprised 👉ua-cam.com/video/5hViY4O2gYQ/v-deo.html

      @gcntech I see lightweight was much faster in hill and aero was not that much faster in straight as light was in the hill.but is talking about aero that's what I see after some upgrades that i did to my carbon bike (scott addict 30 2020) I realize that the crankset wheels and cassette it's mater a lot my bike was entry level when I buy that at 8.600 kilo after the upgrades I did now is 7.570 kilo keep in mind the wheels is aluminum and I will do 2 more upgrades that will make the bike 7.320 kilo for the budget of 2200 bucks it's very good. If you have to buy aero bike you will pay some 5.000 bucks and far more than that for bike much heavier from that I build so i don't believe aero is everything

    Thru axles are NOT stiffer!
    The clamping force, which accounts for most of the stiffness, is actually higher with quick release axles.
    The point of thru axles is to more easily align the disc the same way in the brake caliper when changing wheels.
