Yes I used the slightly out of tune balalaika that I had at home for forty years and which I had never touched before ((the strings are also forty and perhaps they are a little ruined )

Maybe you could change the strings :) My father played the mandoline and sometimes he played some notes of Katiushia and "Les Yeux Noirs" ..... so, I'm always moved when I listen to these tunes ... Yes, it is a beautiful and peculiar instrument with only three strings, two in unison (E) and one in the upper fourth (A), but from which virtuosos manage to obtain incredible things, as can be seen on UA-cam. My father also played the mandolin, a banjo-mandolin to be precise but... it was terrible ! 🤐
