IIRC, these use a 1-wire capacitive coupling method, not inductive. Though the instructions to wind the pickup wire around the ignition cable makes one initially think it's inductive. The pickup wire needs to make full physical contact with the ignition wire along the entire wound area for most reliable function. Again, that's IIRC. Been several years since I researched the coupling method.
I'm new to briggs stuff but play with the predator motors on mini bikes a lot. I know on those if you tap into the kill switch wire , the tach is much more accurate. Not sure if you can do that on a briggs but thought i'd mention it. I been watchin your vids as I just picked up a old manco 3 wheeler powered by the 8 hp I/C briggs engine. Your videos have been a great help. thanks Plan to run the 8 hp this summer but will swap a 16 vanguard on over the winter.
I just use a voltmeter with a heavy lo90ad 120 to 125 volts. That makes sure about the 220 for tyhe pump. The 2500 watt is 1800 r.p.m. because of 4 pole. Usually around 110/120. I rarely run stuff hammered and the 5k is intermittent so no problem. I've thought of one but not yet. You'll let us know how nit does and pick me one!
SETTING 2 for small engines that fire EVERY TIME THE PISTON COMES UP, it is a dead fire on ex closing/intake opening stroke so nothing happens when plug fires. the instructions are ... difficult as im sure they were transcribed from mandarin and... it loses something in translation. they last 2-3 years. the newer ones the plastic is sealed as one unit, it wud take a serious amt of work to cut the back of the unit open to get the battery out. the old ones had the back glued on and it wasnt that hard to open it up to change the dime sized watch battery 2032?
The battery used in these is about the same as a cr2032 button cell that's directly soldered to the circuit board. The one I have looks the same but i've had nothing but issues with it, where my honda branded one reads spot on exact what my mechanical and reflective laser rpm meters read.
I don't use it all the time but just for setting rpms on generators and stuff, but for that it seems to work good and appears to be pretty accurate, its not a instant read out but it does work good. Thanks for Watching!!!
Just wondered if you tested how much the generator slows down under a load. I thought the governor would work to hold the RPMs the same under changing loads?
It should maintain it but it will never 100% maintain it, it will vary slightly. Usually its not enough to matter if its normal load. Thanks for Watching!!!
Nobody can answer that question accurately. You would use whatever mode is necessary for YOUR engine. The fact that it's 150cc or in a scooter has absolutely no relevance to anything whatsoever. The only thing you need to know is how many times it fires every revolution, and that is something that nobody on the internet can guess.
If you have the same thing, then just use it. There is no reason not to use it on your chainsaw or any other form of 1 or 2 cylinder engine that uses a spark plug. It's unclear why you would even ask the question...
Question, do you know the RPM specs for my Briggs Exi 163cc OHV engine? The engine cover says 2600 the repair manual says 3060 to 3600 depending on what day it is LOL, my meter reading was 2960 does that sound right? Side Note: After doing my homework I think its funny Briggs and Stratton charge you for a copy of the repair manual but TORO doesn't just saying... thanks again.
most of them are 3600 but i've seen alot that recommend 2600/2800 depends on the engine. I'd go by whats on the engine, and i'd say that the 2960 would be close enough to 2600 or 3000. you can get on the briggs website unless they changed it, and download them on there for free. Your welcome, Thanks for Watching!!!
Toro is who has specified the engine, Briggs is who made it. The equipment manufacturer (Toro) will set the governor springs etc as they require to best suit their device's requirements.
With some of these cheap meters that have a non-replaceable battery, they have "potted" the internals by filling the case with epoxy. That would make it difficult to replace the battery.
Just rcvd from ebay " (Orange,2/4 Stroke) Chainsaw Engine Tachometer Digital tachometer motorcycle" wanted it for go cart motors and generator. packages says for 2 stroke ...that mean only for chain saw , weed eaters ???
No, it should work the same on any small engine, they all fire the spark plug on each revolution, so it will be same as a 2 cycle. It won't work on a vehicle engine that fires only on the compression stroke. Thanks for Watching!!!
You should still be able to find it on ebay, it should ship with in your country, of you may have to find a dealer for small engine parts and order it from them, not really sure! Thanks for Watching!!!
Yes, because of how the magnet on the flywheel passes the coil with each revolution, on 4 cycles there is a "wasted" spark on the exhaust stroke. Thanks for Watching!!!
Great video. Thank you. I'm from Arkansas so I appreciate you southern twang. I sound just like you, Thanks, Dennis.

That actually makes more sense, I just assumed it was inductive. Thanks for clearing that up! And Thanks for Watching!!!
Nice little gadget. Thanks for sharing Frank.
Your welcome! Thanks for Watching!!!
The timing light clamp is a great idea.
Yeah, but as someone else mentioned, this is capacitive coupled, not inductive so it probably will not work. Thanks for Watching!!!

I never thought of that, I will have to experiment with that! Glad to help out! Thanks for Watching!!!
it seems a good value for money gadget. I have to use programme No 2 for my 2stroke /single cylinder- motorized bicycle motor?
Lawn Tractor motor Briggs and stratton 15,5HP setting 2???thank you.
Cool video very much fnaguitarplayer9 thanks again for

Thanks for the great video! I just bought one to use on my outboard engine. Any idea how to turn it off? Can't work this out! Thanks
Can you get 10,000 or higher rpm's with this techometer?

I figured it would be that type, but I didn't know they were soldered in. Thanks for Watching!!!
CR2450
Looks like a great little gadget. Wished you could change the battery easier.
Yeah, its great for setting rpms, thats the only thing! Thanks for Watching!!!
If you want to change the battery easier, get the identical looking meter that offers a "replaceable battery" feature.
I would like to hear how this tach is holding up for you and accuracy etc.
I don't use it all the time but just for setting rpms on generators and stuff, but for that it seems to work good and appears to be pretty accurate, its not a instant read out but it does work good. Thanks for Watching!!!
the modes are confusing me. for a push lawn mover, i have 6.50 BS 4 cycle engine, what mode should i use?
you need the setting for spark firing every revolution. Thanks for Watching!
I have some of those , I love'm !!
I hear ya! Thanks for Watching!!!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 I have found that a spring works great on these , an test clip works to if it does not touch ground !
Did you ever try the inductive coil? I am thinking the same
No i haven't! I don't see why it wouldn't work though, Thanks for Watching!!!

Good info right here. So what mode would be used for a 4-cycle 150cc scooter engine??
Should be the same as in the video, that should fire with every revolution. Thanks for Watching!!!

I have a 70 hp Yamaha outboard it's a 2 stroke 3 cylinder. Would this work to set my RPM?
I don't see why it wouldn't, should work fine. Thanks for Watching!!!
is there one that does not require you to wrap wire on plug if you just want to check idles speeds ?
Not that I'm aware of. Thanks for Watching!!!
I think stihl makes a wireless one
Ok I have the same thing, what would I use for a 2 stroke chainsaw, thanks man

Mine has a screw on battery cover, but if you can manage to get the back of this unit off, it takes a CR2450 battery.
If you press and hold both buttons it will shut off after 5 seconds. Press 1 button to turn back on.
Really!?!? I did not know that!!!! Thanks for Watching!!!
Which mode would you use for a Kawasaki Fs600v V-twin engine? Thanks.
The same as i did on this single cylinder, you will wrap the wire on either of the 2 cylinder's plug wire. Thanks for Watching!!!
@@fnaguitarplayer9 Ok Thank you.
