- Tato Farming: Planting and harvesting taros here on Niue is a lifestyle for most families. It is our staple food. Children help by working alongside their parents and learning at the same time. This is how the torch of knowledge is being passed on from generation to generation.
This is how children or young people are introduced and inducted into the learning and values of hard work, patience, teamwork, delayed gratification and also skills of working without supervision, after they have been taught under supervision of course.
These taro farming experiences will in no doubt help mould them into hard working and responsible individuals with fortitude. Skills gained and mental strength that can transform or translate well into other areas of their lives.
There are lots of taro varieties and each has their own unique characteristics such as taste, texture, longevity in the ground, growth factors, external environmental factors and so forth. There is so much to learn, understand and appreciate about taro farming.
It is an ongoing process which never ends unless you give it up altogether or leave the Island!

Here in Philippines, I harvest my taros if they're 6 mos.i take out the young ones sprouting earlier, so that the mother taro will produce big taters, and those young ones I took out, I plant them in small nursery bags, then plant them when rooted.
Oh i see❤❤❤❤thats y❤❤so good❤❤❤
Nice music, good looking taro, good looking people, nice weather, everything looks good......who knew that living in our small islands in the pacific and dreaming of the big cities, the cars, trains, the Hollywood Movies, The Bruce Lee's Movie that one day we will be watching video of our taro and our beautiful polynesian everyday living.

@M Seeker No. Mostly all Niue varieties with a few that has origins from Samoa. Don't know of any that are from Fiji. The popular Fijian pink taro is from the Niue taro.

In Trinidad we call that tool a Louchet. And the Taro plant we call Dasheen. We boil and fry it with various veg and non veg sides. The leaves we make bhagi and our national dish calaloo.
here in the Philippines we eat the stem of taro like this
I am growing it in Georgia US. Yes, mom always added dasheen in the bhagi. So sweet.
In Trinidad the dasheen grows big like this?
Visiting the island of Niue is on my bucket list.
Taro yuhu
Nice sharing farming information.
Awesome plants
Thanks you
The tool is called a " Luchet", sold in our hardware stores.
We call Taro, "Dasheen" in our country.
Its origin is Tahiti.
It is planted in very wet waterlogged soil here.
Our leaves have a purplish colour in the middle of the "Y" on each leaf.
Cooked, one type is bluish, the other is white.
Young leaves are sold in bundles in our markets. Very popular and important food item in our diet.
Nice family video. Keep it up. All the best !

Hi. My family grew it here in Florida,we also called it Dasheen it was more round than what he was digging. I still grow it. Some of my family don't like it because we ate so much of it as young ones but to me it brings back good memories.
@@davebrunner1272 Yes. I understand. I am 67, and came from an agricultural background. In years gone by, meat was eaten only on Sundays, or less often. Garden produce was eaten according to the season, as there were no freezers or packaging facilities. So, when cassava, breadfruit, yams, dasheen were in season you ate lots of it !
I have a friend who says he will never eat breadfruit again. They had a tree in the front yard !!!
We have more of the rounded dasheen in my country. But I have seen some big ones. In nearby Venezuela there are long ones, maybe around 10 lbs.
Bundles of young dasheen leaves are a very important food item in our markets and supermarkets.

Thank u I came to say the same thing and am from Jamaica 🇯🇲 and we call I dasheen
@@vantablacklogicthoughts5186 We call the bundle of leaves, " dasheen bush". We make " Saheena" an Indian delicacy with the leaves, bhaji, and calalloo.

Growing up in Manu'a having a kalo plantation is the sign of a real man and with kalo the size of your harvest is what every young man hoped for when time to harvest the kalo plantation. I was surprised to hear you name the kalo Manu'a because that is exactly what it was. But like another person commented, the best in our plantations was the kalo Niue, purple and tasty, the smell of it will never compare to any other taro. Malo lava...
Good...have you tried the yellow taro here in Fiji...taste good and smell nice!!!!
@@licelewanigatu1390 As a matter of fact I have, my ex-wife is kaiviti, I have been to all the Fiji markets in Suva, Lautoka, Sigatoka and Nadi. The varieties are plenty and the tastes was also amazing. But, the talo Niue is still the best to me because it's what we grew up growing the most. We have the yellow variety also, and it's mostly grown in swamp or what we call in Samoa, Kaufusi.
