I cannot praise this tutorial highly enough. I was dreading trying to transfer the music, fearing that it would be complicated and fraught with failure. I looked for several days for the best way to transfer iTunes from my old computer to the new one, and this one is outstanding. Nick's explanations were clear, easy and precise. Even though my old computer is a Windows XP, I had no trouble figuring out how to make it work despite minor differences. Thank you, Nick for your help.
Being a 74 year old your transfer of music fro one computer to another was easily followed by me . The big plus is that all is working great on my new computer . Thank you .
I am totally amazed!! For years I have struggled through having to keep my very old laptop that’s slow as it can be, simply because my music in iTunes was set up on it exactly the way I needed it to be for my iPod. Thanks to your tutorial, I was able to successfully move my playlists to my new computer!! It took me 2 days because I kept messing up the steps, but I’m so impressed because I read several things on how to do it, and they all were entirely too complicated or suggested that I had to buy software. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!
I've been trying for DAYS to get iTunes from my old XP laptop to my Win 10 laptop. This is the only thing that's worked. THANK YOU!! Great, clear tutorial.
About five or six years ago I used the home sharing method to migrate all my music files from the old laptop to the new one. This method worked, but it literally took half a day to complete. Last year I needed to perform the same migration again, and tried to follow the convoluted methods on the official Apple site, and eventually gave up as I just couldn't get anything to work according to their instructions. The method outlined here is so simple and it works (and my 12,000+ files moved in just over an hour). Congratulations on an excellent video, and thank you very much.
I know it’s been awhile since you posted this, but I just wanted to tell you that I tried for days to transfer our iTunes files to our new computer without success. I reviewed about a dozen UA-cam sights and tried just about everything. I found your site and followed your instructions and it worked!!! Thank you so much for posting these instructions. I wish I would have done this in the beginning.
OMG..!! This is absolutely AMAZING..!! Tried other videos and didn't work as well as yours... the most amazing part is that brought all my libraries organized as I had them on my old computer, running music, mellow music, work music and so and so.. you are AMAZING..!! Thank you sooooo much xoxo
Thank you, Nick, it's amazing that you made this so simple and easy to do when I have been struggling with the "official instructions" from Apple iTunes for a week without being able to figure out what I was doing wrong. You do a FINE JOB of explaining and helping and I hope you know how much I appreciate it!
This video needs to be advertised and promoted. These directions were more successful and reliable than the Apple support website. You, sir, saved me from a lot of fear and stress.
Thanks for coming back and leaving your kind feedback. It's appreciated. Glad to hear that my directions were clear and helpful in your success. Please consider subscribing if you have not already done so, to see more future videos like this one.
I need to thank you for providing such a painless solution to moving 65 G of music from a Vista machine to a Windows 10. Worked flawlessly. Thanks for providing your expertise in this forum.
I had mixed results using Nick's method. I was transferring a large i-tunes music library (700 + albums) from an HP Windows 7 laptop to a new Motile Windows 10 laptop using an external usb drive as the transfer medium. The transfer itself took about 3 hours. After the transfer the i-tunes app on the Windows 10 pc had lots of problems with the data that was transferred. Lots of missing artwork and many albums were marked "unknown album". Also, many albums were split up into multiple albums and had to be consolidated back into one album by changing either the album name, artist, composer, or genre. This task of filling in the missing blanks, retrieving artwork, and combining albums took about 12 hours. I followed all of the steps listed in the tutorial and have no idea what went wrong. I did not get any error messages from either Windows 7 or Windows 10 during the transfer process. I think this had more to do with i-tunes than Nick's procedure. Over the years I have had problems with i-tunes losing artwork. I have even created a separate folder to store artwork away from i-tunes so that I can quickly restore it when it randomly disappears. Nick, thanks for the tutorial, I eventually have everything migrated to the new computer.
Yes! This is terrible and seems there's no fix for it!!...I assume it's partly due to illegal torrent downloads and iTunes somehow making it difficult for us to upload them correctly? I dunno just my thoughts...
I will be transferring from windows 7 desk top to windows 11 Laptop. This is the best instructional video I watched. Hopefully, Windows 11 takes it smoothly. I am not good with techie stuff. Thank you for explaining every step for those like me. A+++
Thank you for posting this. I was afraid to put itunes on my new laptop as I thought it was really complicated. You made it very simple and now its done! thank you again.
Off all the videos I have watched, this is the most spot on. I say that because if you it exactly your iTunes from your old PC will be transferred. The "Spot On" comes from the fact that you Play Counts, Playlists, Last Played etc etc are replicated on you new PC. No need to start re configuring Library.xml or other. The only thing I'll advise is to consolidate your iTunes songs on your old PC to just the C:\Users\Your User\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music folder before you copy.
Thank you so much! I suck at computers and even bought a new laptop because mine was dying or just very slow. I learned a lot from watching UA-cam did everything by myself from learning how to re-download my apps to transferring data. You are amazing. 😀
YOU my friend are awesome!! Hours and hours of trying to figure this out and I finally got my music moved to my new computer. Wish I had watched this in the first place!
Thank you SO MUCH for this tutorial! I have always just had a separate music folder and not allowed iTunes to copy the files to itself (relic of being annoyed at having to use iTunes in the first place when I got my first iPod... when I still used Windows Media Player for listening on PC). Unfortunately this meant I couldn't transfer playlists, because they pointed to old file paths when I moved folders to my new computer. This video was concise and exactly what I needed! As an added bonus, transferring all the prefs from my old iTunes made it recognize my iPhone without having to erase everything! As many people know, hooking an iPhone up to a new computer often comes with the dreaded "iPhone is synced with another iTunes Library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes Library?" warning. When I tried moving my iTunes manually the first time, this warning came up. After uninstalling iTunes and starting over with this tutorial, when I hooked my iPhone up (expecting to erase, but now it was ok since my playlists were back) the warning was gone! Unexpected but welcome! A note for others using multiple storage drives: I did not want the library in the default location, as I am using an SSD for booting and a HDD for storage, and pointing the iTunes program to a different library than default can be tricky. This page helped with that extra step: www.davidlimonline.com/blog/2019/5/1/cant-change-the-itunes-media-folder-location-try-creating-a-new-itunes-library
Thank you so much. This video worked for me transferring from Windows Vista to Windows 8 with no problem. I followed all your step by step and you don't know how much you have helped me. I have been trying to do it by myself but couldn't.
Whew! I'll watch more than once, but this gives me great comfort. My hard disk failed and when I replaced it from a Windows 7 to a Windows 10, I was feeling great trepidation. Thanks!!!!! There is an easy solution to solve my problems.
This was exactly what I needed. I tried just following Apple's instructions. No luck. Nick took me slowly but surely from beginning to end. Success. Thanks, Nick!
When consolidating my library I encountered the "Can't copy file name too long or invalid" issue which was a pain in the ass since I had 2000+ songs with no idea which ones were the offenders. After a long time of sifting through them I was fortunately able to work around this. It still boggles my mind that Apple can create extremely user-friendly operating systems like iOS yet when it comes to their iTunes program it has always been so needlessly complicated. As one of the few people who still likes to download and manage his music the way he has been since the iPod days, this video was a huge help. Thank you.
This is the clearest and most accurate explanation I have ever seen -- for this task, or for any other UA-cam tutorial. Fantastically easy to follow, and leaves no question open. Definitely Subscribing! Thank you Nick. Glad I found your channel!
Omg it worked!!!! Months I have been trying to get my darn music. I got rid of all my cds since they were all scratched. You are so awesome for this video!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Works! I had a huge collection to transfer so I was somewhat hesitant, but everything moved perfectly (cover art, play count, etc...) Very Recommended.
Thank you so much! I had tried this so many times before and always failed because I had some music in multiple locations on the computer. Thanks to your extra tips about consolidation, and showing the correct way to erase the new computer's itunes and just paste the old one in, I managed to transfer everything. You saved me a lot of heartache!! Thank you.
Nick, I know you posted this in 2015 but I was successful in transferring my Itunes from an old to my new computer. Step by step it was great. Many Thanks!!
The key is to make sure all the file identifiers at the top of your screen are in the same order as Nick's. (i.e. "This PC>C:>Users>Owner>Music>etc>etc"). This helped me when I got confused. Just follow the screen shots and imitate the file(s) order on top of Nick's PC screen. Thanks Nick!
Thank you Nick, I did exactly what you said, and I even went and purchased a new flash drive with more memory and my iTunes was right where it's supposed to be. Thank you again!
Dear NickThank you very much for a great tutorial. I have been round and round in circles for over a year without being able to move my iTunes music onto my new, now old computer without having to download any software. I have really appreciated it. Even I could do it which means you really simplified it and did each step without shortcuts for someone who is not so computer literate. Kay
Fantastic, I'm completely useless when it comes to technology & this video really helped me out,for a computer store to do this for me I was getting quoted €40-€80 & this video enabled me to do it for free, thank you.
Happy my video helped you out. Thanks for coming back and leaving feedback. It's appreciated. Please subscribe if you want to see more videos like this one.👍😎
Thank you sooooo..... much!!!! Your video was very easy to follow and was the first one that actually was helpful (meaning, I finally had success in transferring my music)!!! Had I found your video first I would not have been frustrated with other suggestions on how to move music and... this would have been done several days ago!! I don't normally comment, let alone subscribe to UA-cam videos, but I have subscribed to yours. Thank you again!! I'm hoping your videos will help me make my transition to windows 10 from windows 7 much easier!!
I did everything the same but didn't delete the itunes folder on my new computer and felt that something was wrong... so luckily I found this video and everything made more sense, thanks!! :)
Thank you so much! You have no idea now helpful this is because I am also transferring my iTunes from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Anyone who needs guidance should check out this video!
Thank you so much for this video. I had no idea what to do until I watched this and it was very easy to do the transfer thanks to your clear instructions and images etc.
Many many many hours later! This works Consolidate drive on old itunes on old comp (under Library edit-) ------under edit libaray again - click export library File (remember where you keep this-I kept it in itunes folder and dated it) Copy itunes (including music!) from drive -from your Old comp *note it may work just cutting and pasting music Files-but I copied the whole folder. Paste on drive in new comp Install itunes on new comp drive Drag whole itunes folder (including music files) into Itunes Go to import playlist on itunes-click on your saved File…
Thanks Nick. I've just bought a new computer and was petrified of losing my iTunes library of 11 years when I set up my new one later this week. Having watched your video (and subscribed to your channel), I think I'll be OK.
+nickscomputerfix , I need your advice. Followed your instructions and thought I had transferred all my music, playlists etc to my new computer - I'd even purchased a couple of new albums to celebrate! However, I tried to locate an album I'd added (Christmas present) and couldn't find it. When I revealed the Status Bar, I noticed that the number of items on my new computer was considerably less than on my old computer (thank goodness I hadn't deleted my old library!) I've repeated the process again, but still get the same result - don't understand what I'm doing wrong.....HELP! Regards, Carol Lamming
+Carol Lamming Consolidate all your music/songs on your old computer in your old computer iTunes media library. If they are in your old iTunes media library than when you move/copy the old iTunes medial library onto your new computer iTunes media library they will be there.
+nickscomputerfix Thanks Nick, I'll try again over the weekend (it's nearly 2am). I'm currently "missing" over 2,000 songs.....don't want to have to add them individually! Kind regards, Carol
Thank you, Nick!! I'm not very computer savvy but your step by step instructions made it easy to understand. Couldn't have done it without you-thanks again!!!
Thanks for coming back and leaving feedback. Glad to hear that my video was helpful. Please consider subscribing if you have not already done so, to see more videos like this one.
Thanks to the tutorial, very helpful. But I would like to know if how do I transfer from an old computer to a computer that already has an itunes folder in place with apps and music already in the new computer. If you can please send me the link to that tutorial or the instructions on how to do it. Thanks
This is awesome and I was able to locate my media file re-setting up my old PC and downloaded to my external hard drive. Seems I had more than one iTunes folder and did not get the correct one the first time. Feeling hopeful for getting this uploaded to new PC! THANKS
Excellent video. If done correctly, will it allow me to backup my phone properly and choose the sync music option? Keep getting the "Are you sure you want to remove existing music, movies, TV shows, books, and tones from this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?" message.
Thank you Nick. I wish I had found your video before suffering for hours with a stupid $25 transfer cable that would not work at all. I am going to look to you for help from now on.
worked great :) lots of help ... I imported from vista to win 10 , previously vista running on old version of iTunes , tho I did have to reimport all the albums in my music folder in to iTunes and let iTunes convert them all ....but all great ...thx
great video however I have a question, I'm currently using an very old version of iTunes on my old computer so when I copy my songs over to my new Windows 10 computer with a predownloaded updated version of iTunes do I delete the folder under iTunes like you demonstrated or just copy the iTunes file into that existing folder ??
Thanks Nick, just what I was looking for. However I have a few songs on the new computer, does that mean you have to copy the songs and data from your old computer into the individual files rather than delete the whole itunes folder?
Hi Nick, thanks for the clear and helpful instructions, easily the most helpful example I've seen so far. I managed to transfer all the data like art work, play lists and ratings etc, but none of the songs will play and all have exclamation points beside them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A little late I'm sure but that means that iTunes cannot locate the songs because they are in a different location than the other computer. Basically if you want to keep your 'PLAYLISTS' AND OTHER MUSIC, you'll need to go song by song. Right click on the song and and search for the file you have saved. Sadly, this means you will need to do this song by song. If someone has a better solution, please pipe in.
Nick...I am finally moving my iTunes off of Windows XP and onto Windows 10, But I am curious about one thing. The iTunes Library on my Windows XP, resides in a folder called iTunes Music. I am wondering if I can follow through with the copying to an external drive as shown, but before copying back down to Windows 10, just change the folder name to iTunes Media? Wondering if that will work or have disasterous consequences. Other than that, is seems pretty straight forward. Thanks!
Hello Nick, grateful to have found you! I can only get into my relic running windows 7, by safe mode. Will your method still work to transfer to my new windows 10? Also how to transfer to IPad? I am not tech savvy, and would be heartbroken to lose all my music.
Thanks this helped a lot! I got a new laptop recently and I dreaded the thought of having to re-download all my music from scratch. Using the apple website help wasn't very helpful either.
Thank you. This worked great. The only issue is that my playlists did not transfer. I guess I can always redo them. Did I do something wrong? Thank you.
Thank you for the video Nick. I have a question though. I transferred the iTunes folder from my old PC to my new PC following the exact steps in the video. The transferred iTunes folder is in the correct location and the iTunes Media folder location on the new computer is set to C:\Users\Victor Yau\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media. However, when I open iTunes on the new computer, not even a single transferred file shows up in iTunes. Only my purchased items (which are synced through iCloud) are displayed. Could you please help me with this issue?
I cannot praise this tutorial highly enough. I was dreading trying to transfer the music, fearing that it would be complicated and fraught with failure. I looked for several days for the best way to transfer iTunes from my old computer to the new one, and this one is outstanding. Nick's explanations were clear, easy and precise. Even though my old computer is a Windows XP, I had no trouble figuring out how to make it work despite minor differences. Thank you, Nick for your help.

Glad to hear about your success. Thanks for sharing! 👌😎
@@nickscomputerfix question: should there be any problems in syncing my iPod to the Itunes on my new computer?
It should work Ok. However, if you need some additional help in the steps you can Google using keywords: how to sync iPod to the Itunes.

Hello Nick I have noticed that all the songs have an exclamation mark and they are not playing. How do I fix that, thanks for all your help. Kay
There are steps to fix that: suggest going over to Google and search using keywords: how to get rid of exclamation marks on itunes
Many other places (including Apple) had confusing instructions, but this video was simple and worked. Thank You!
A million thanks Nick, of all the tutotials I saw, yours was the one that convinced me, and it worked perfectly, THANKS so much again!
Great to hear!

Thanks very much for the straight forward tutorial - we were able to transfer my wife's large library in less than an hour!
Thanks for posting your success.
You're Welcome. 👌😎
Excellent video - covered every step and possible variations. Thank You
Great tutorial. Was nervous about doing this in case I lost any info but it worked a treat. Thanks very much
iTunes
It worked on Win 10 to Win 10. I am happy. Fine tutorial.
Tks for the feedback.
Many many many hours later!
This works
Consolidate drive on old itunes on old comp (under
Library edit-)
------under edit libaray again - click export library
File (remember where you keep this-I kept it in itunes folder and dated it)
Copy itunes (including music!) from drive -from your
Old comp
*note it may work just cutting and pasting music
Files-but I copied the whole folder.
Paste on drive in new comp
Install itunes on new comp drive
Drag whole itunes folder (including music files) into
Itunes
Go to import playlist on itunes-click on your saved
File…
that consolidate files is the answer i have been looking for, thanks
👌😎
Thanks Nick. I've just bought a new computer and was petrified of losing my iTunes library of 11 years when I set up my new one later this week. Having watched your video (and subscribed to your channel), I think I'll be OK.
+Carol Lamming Welcome aboard new Subscriber.
Regards,
Carol Lamming
Thanks for leaving feedback on your successfulness.
Thank you!!
Thank you!! Apple support made this sound so difficult. You made it effortless!
Thanks
Did you get your answer? I have the same problem.
I was almost going to have an anxiety attack since I do have 5,000 songs and very organized playlists but thank you so much for this!!!
Thank You! That tutorial is amazing! Could not have done it without you!
😎👍
Thank you very much, followed all the steps and wallah got everything intact. Great tutorial.
😎👍
Tried following apple instructions and failed. I followed yours, and it worked. Thank you!
👍
This was really simple and easily instructed. Thanks a bunch.
Great to hear!
terrific commentary, so helpful. ( I agree with Sue below, much better than than Apple support page) - thank you.
Thanks.
This is awesome and I was able to locate my media file re-setting up my old PC and downloaded to my external hard drive. Seems I had more than one iTunes folder and did not get the correct one the first time. Feeling hopeful for getting this uploaded to new PC! THANKS
A great step by step tutorial... many thanks
Worked great on Windows 10 64 bit and iTunes 12.7. Nice job!
Thanks you, I would like this multiple times if I could. For anyone wondering it also saves playlists!
Thanks for the help. Great step by step instructions for us non-savvy computer guys.
😎👍
worked great :) lots of help ...
Very good tutorial. Clear and concise. Much appreciated.
Worked exactly as demonstrated in your video.....thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much!!! Very easy to follow!!!! Success!!!!
Worked like a charm! Thanks for the help!
Thanks Nick, just what I was looking for. However I have a few songs on the new computer, does that mean you have to copy the songs and data from your old computer into the individual files rather than delete the whole itunes folder?
Ever get your answer? I have the same problem.
@@slayinvisible not really, my iTunes is a bit of a mess but I get by with various playlists
@@mark1hancock Oh geez. Did you copy paste it so there is two folders or just delete the newer one?
@@slayinvisible can’t remember now, but I do have a few copies of the same song through out
Hi Nick, thanks for the clear and helpful instructions, easily the most helpful example I've seen so far.
OH MY GOSH!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!! I cannot even begin to explain how much I've been trying to transfer my music!!
Worked perfectly the first time!! Thank you, Nick! Good tutorial!
,
thank you so much.. looking forward to try this.. will tell you if i have any difficulties.. wonderful tutorial.. could understand easily
Great tutorial - thanks Nick! Why couldn't have Apple made it that simple in their "Help" section....
