maddy winchester I liked his performance in the movie version. Sometimes I want to travel to the year 2000 when he starred opposite Heather Headley in Aida.
I think the original Roger, Angel, Benny and Maureen are the best. Mixed feelings about originals and the final cast (2008) for Mark and Collins. 2008 Mimi was the best. And the movie's Joanne was the best.
I got to meet Adam Pascal a couple weeks ago, and he said that he didn't really know the words for One Song Glory when they shot this, and he told us that the reason he keeps looking down during the song is because they had the lyrics on the floor for him:)
Actually it's true also he was the only one who was not a trained actor. the lyrics were on the floor and the table that's why also he is sit down a lot
It's true! "I had a really impossible time remembering the lyrics to One Song Glory, so I had the lyrics written down on an orange index card, and it was taped to the metal table sitting right next to me. So I could not leave that spot for fear of forgetting the lyrics. The blocking of that song is basically, the entire song takes place with me sitting on the table - and then for the choruses, which is 'one song, glory, one song, glory', just 'one song, one song, glory', that I was confident that I could remember. So I would get up from the table and sing 'one song glory' but then it’s time to get back to the verses and I would sit back down."
It's because he quit smoking. Seriously compare him on the RENT OBC to the Aida OBC, only 4 years inbetween and it made all the difference in the world
I know what you mean. One time,I saw Next to Normal when the national tour opened at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Alice Ripley reprised her original role of Diana. Her voice was flat at times possibly from vocal exhaustion. But it was still worth having the rare opportunity to see the original star of a musical that is in my opinion just as good as Rent.
I saw it dozens of times in middle school..we used to ditch and wait for last minute tix. They also had day of front row raffles and so i saw it front row many times. I can't believe how young they look now!
@@msb4838 I didn't get to see the OBC cast because I was too young (according to my mother). But I won the front row raffle in 2004 and got to sit front row, center. When Mark drops the key, it hit my foot and we wanted to keep it but someone from under the stage asked for it back lol
I had the amazing privlege to see it in high school in NYC when on a school trip. Sadly, Adam Pascal was sick the night of my performance. BUT, he and Anthony Rapp came to Toronto to do a run and I got to see him then. I would go see it every night if I could.
I wish we had a full original broadway cast recording of rent like in high quality EDIT: It does exist! But you can only watch it at the NY Public Library as with most pro shot Broadway shows
If you were to ask me, I feel like it doesn't matter much. I feel like if an actor puts all their effort into their character, it's worth appreciating.
I was born in 1995, and did not discover rent until much, much later. I've loved this play for years and I've always wished more than anything that I could go back and watch the original Broadway cast do the show, seeing this just makes me want it more.
This is pretty much all that's left as far as professional quality recordings of the original Broadway cast... :( I mean there is the movie, but I want the full actual original broadway play version. I feel like I'll never see it. I was too young to see it when it was on broadway.
Yeah this is the only thing closest to a high quality rip of the original broadway cast that we got, hopefully one day we'll see the full show in it's in entirety with the original cast
I saw the new 20th anniversary tour today and it made me want to get a time machine and go back to 1996. Rent has such an emotionally energetic score! Musical storytelling like that is hard to find in today's theatre world.
I miss you Johnathan. I knew Diggs was going to be a very big success. I'll never forget the last time I saw you and we spoke. All these year's later I think about you, just like Fosse.
Idk why but Rosario Dawson will always be my favorite mimi and I feel like she doesn't get enough credit for it. I totally respect daphne as the original and given the original broadway as a cohesive musical she did a very good job. But idk the movie version of mimi with Rosario was just so enchanting and raw as another commentator wrote also.
Wilson is very nice. When we first met at his party, he said,"I heard you are _____ I heard u like hamilton!!!Eeeeeeeeeekkkkk!!!!!" He is a big fan of Hamilton.
You guys are forgetting that Daphne actually worked with Jonathan Larson. She is playing exactly what he envisioned. Mimi only appears to not be "sexy enough" here because as time progressed people changed her character so we've all seen a different character whereas this is the one that Jonathan was actually envisioning. And I think that she sounds great; especially how she's singing will whipping her head around. This poor quality just doesn't do her justice.
I feel like acting wise Daphne's Mimi was more young, fun, and flirty and Dawson's was a more sensitive wise but still fun Mimi. I don't know why people hate on daphne's Mimi so much she was everything Mimi should be, even though her singing wasn't absolutely amazing.
You guys are so damn harsh, Daphne is a very good singer. Not sexy enough? This was the first big stage incarnation of the show, characters evolve as more people portray them.
To all those that complain about how bad Daphne Vega's voice is, I think it really is a matter of taste because I remember hearing the CD for the first time in 1997 and thinking that her voice was raw, unpolished, this video is pretty bad but I had the opportunity to see her and the original cast a few times.... and the energy that they brought to their characters, people have been trying to match ever since, there are other women with better voices, better bodies, but Daphne owned Mimi... it's hers.. she is Mimi and anything else is just a knock off even if technically they're more proficient....
Manny C I agree! I'm glad there are others out there who love her as much as i do! She was my first introduction to this character, and no one else gets it, i feel. Others get close, but jonathan knew what he was doing when he cast Daphne!
She made the show. She was a perfect Mimi. Raw and fragile. I saw the original cast 3 times and they were incredible. The energy within the characters were amazing. All of Mimis clothes in the performance came out of her own closet. She played a NY character of that era perfectly. Johnathan Larson cast her perfectly.
Daphne is the only fucking one here that sings it like a normal person and not a singer with training. She is the only fucking one who sings it like how a normal god damn person would. Stop giving her hate. Plus she is fucking Jonathan Larson approved. She is what he envisioned Mimi to be. Was anyone else Jonathan Larson approved? No. Everyone in this version has not worked with Jonathan Larson except Daphne. Oh and for the idiots here Jonathan Larson wrote the show.
Personally, I prefer Daphne's voice over Rosario's. It may just be because I've listened to the OB recording about twenty-two times as many times than the movie but I just feel like her voice just embodies Mimi
JulietteMarie that's not how that works. a drag queen is a male who dresses as a female. a transgender woman is a male who changes their gender to live as a female. you can't be both, it doesn't work like that. although, the lines between gender and sexuality were much more grey in the late 80's/ early 90's.
i dont care if mimi is supposed to be a drug addict Daphne's voice makes me cringe. and considering how many songs mimi sings in the musical i feel like she has to have at least a semi decent voice despite the drug thing. i love the songs that mimi sings but ugh i cant bare more than about even 20 seconds of any of them with that raspy yelling voice of Daphne
My favorite voice for Mimi was Rosario because she gave a bit of raspiness that Mimi was supposed to have but I loved Daphne's portrayal of Mimi it was always so raw.
I like the final performance cast way better but I know this is the original cast and they came first and all but I didn't think they were anything compared to the final performance cast. Mimi was horrible.
not sure why everyone loves this cast so much. I appreciate them for being the original, but if given the choice of a dream cast I would replace around half of them.
@VivaLaBamgurl116 except the final broadway cast. Adam Kantor and Will Chase are much better actors and their singing is just as good. Although Anthony is amazing.
Man I love the original cast, considering all but two are from the movie, which I love to bits, but man, I just do not like Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi, she is just NOT hot or sexy at all, and she doesn't seem to have the correct voice range.
I agree with with you but the below comment says it all. mimi is a broken character .. And her vocals, dress and behavior are well reflected by daphne, although I prefer Renee's because I like her rendition of goodbye love. It gave me chills.
I agree about the voice but if you watch more clips Daphne played Mimi so well. Mimi is a drugged up hyper 19 year old stripper, character wise no one has beat Daphne at it.
Mimi sounds awful! I know that this is the original cast and they should represent how the future should be like, but good god! Anyone would be better than her! Emmy Rosseum could be a better Mimi!
dapne played an old NY addict perfectly. He picked her for the part for a reason. Addicts are not supposed to be polished and it was the 90s. Her energy gave off a fragile, vulnerable addict. She was made for the part.
you can all have your opinions, but don’t bash daphne and say her voice is “horrible” or that “she isn’t sexy enough!” she is PERFECT for this role. look at the energy she has! it’s absolutely amazing. she’s playing a drug addict 19 year old who has so much ENERGY. she’s moving around on stage a lot, no wonder her voice is gonna be a little off. she has an amazing voice. and it isn’t always about singing! it’s how you preform. she’s an amazing performer. i love rosario and renee but no one will never have the energy like daphne portrayed. remember, this is broadway. you only have one shot on stage and if you mess up you mess up. rosario probably had many times where she screwed up and got to fix them because she was in the movie. let’s not compare the actresses on who played better, they were all equally amazing and put the best into portraying their part as they could :)
Nobody beats Wilson as Angel. He is amazing.
Adam is my favorite Roger, he just fits the role perfectly
maddy winchester I liked his performance in the movie version. Sometimes I want to travel to the year 2000 when he starred opposite Heather Headley in Aida.
maddy winchester because he is roger
I think the original Roger, Angel, Benny and Maureen are the best. Mixed feelings about originals and the final cast (2008) for Mark and Collins. 2008 Mimi was the best. And the movie's Joanne was the best.
Ian Lee Joanne in the movie is also in the 2008 final cast
Rosario goes for the sweet, sultry approach, Renee goes for the sexy approach, Daphne goes for the crazy, high-on-drugs approach. Love them all ;)
Adam will always be Roger. Nobody can sing "One Song Glory" like him!
I got to meet Adam Pascal a couple weeks ago, and he said that he didn't really know the words for One Song Glory when they shot this, and he told us that the reason he keeps looking down during the song is because they had the lyrics on the floor for him:)
Which is kinda weird because they had been performing the show for a while before this
Ikr?
f u poser
Actually it's true also he was the only one who was not a trained actor. the lyrics were on the floor and the table that's why also he is sit down a lot
It's true!

these angles couldn't be more 90s if you slapped a flannel button down around its waist
Not that his voice was bad, but Adam's voice has gotten ten times better
It's because he quit smoking. Seriously compare him on the RENT OBC to the Aida OBC, only 4 years inbetween and it made all the difference in the world
I wish I'd seen this on Broadway, especially with this cast-I suppose everyone wishes they could see a play with the original cast though.
I know what you mean. One time,I saw Next to Normal when the national tour opened at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Alice Ripley reprised her original role of Diana. Well I wasn’t even alive when this was originally on broadway which sucks for me.
Wilson oh my Godness!! Seriously the only Angel in my heart.. A lotta love for him and Jesse.. ;)
Wilson is a funny guy. When I first met him he said,"You must be _____I heard u like Hamilton. Eeeeeek!!!!!"
I'm glad that they almost all came back for the movie. No other cast could have been better.
I wish we had a full original broadway cast recording of rent like in high quality
EDIT: It does exist! But you can only watch it at the NY Public Library as with most pro shot Broadway shows
They really need to put pro shots like that on a streaming service. I would pay 25 a month for that.
They should revive this when Broadway reopens. Perfectly fits our post-COVID moment.
Wilson ( Angel ) is my queen !!!! 👑👑👑👑
Dude chill...
He is a cool guy.
If you were to ask me, I feel like it doesn't matter much. I feel like if an actor puts all their effort into their character, it's worth appreciating.
This is one of the best musicals ever!!! My opinion.
I was born in 1995, and did not discover rent until much, much later. I've loved this play for years and I've always wished more than anything that I could go back and watch the original Broadway cast do the show, seeing this just makes me want it more.
I was born in 93 and I sometimes wish to go back and see the original Broadway cast too.
Anthony will always be my favorite mark and Adam my favorite roger
I feel like a recurring theme in these comments is people shitting on Daphne Rubin-Vega.
Came here after the Fox Live fiasco.
I'm feeling better now.
Thanks.
The original cast is the only cast I would ever want to see Rent, and I did! I will never forget it. #AnthonyRapp #AdamPascal
The 25th anniversary tour cast is amazing
This is pretty much all that's left as far as professional quality recordings of the original Broadway cast... :( I mean there is the movie, but I want the full actual original broadway play version. I feel like I'll never see it. I was too young to see it when it was on broadway.

i have a link to a bootleg of opening night OBC. do you want it? its not HD but its something
wren ingber i do!
wren ingber I need that link! Please...
I would LOVE it
I saw the new 20th anniversary tour today and it made me want to get a time machine and go back to 1996. Rent has such an emotionally energetic score! Musical storytelling like that is hard to find in today's theatre world.
Manuel Orozco I know!! It was so good!! I saw it on October 4th
Llamatacos295 It was so good indeed. However, I've seen better stuff than this reduced (in a good way) work of art.
***** Amazing
Also everyone Fox has chosen Rent as one of their next live TV productions
It never fails to draw me in! And when I hear a single song I HAVE to play it all.
wow Daphne Rubin Vega is amazing !
Anna Marmiesse thank you for saying so! I agree!
I miss you Johnathan. I knew Diggs was going to be a very big success. I'll never forget the last time I saw you and we spoke. All these year's later I think about you, just like Fosse.

I totally respect daphne as the original and given the original broadway as a cohesive musical she did a very good job. But idk the movie version of mimi with Rosario was just so enchanting and raw as another commentator wrote also.
a bit late of a reply but i completely agree! her twist on mimi is my fav mimi 😍
Mine too you guys!! She is my favorite one !!
WILSON JERMAINE HEREDIA ! 😮😍💗💖💞
He is awesome. He is a big fan of Hamilton.
Wilson is very nice. When we first met at his party, he said,"I heard you are _____ I heard u like hamilton!!!Eeeeeeeeeekkkkk!!!!!" He is a big fan of Hamilton.
Got the opportunity to work with Daphne on Smash this season. Made my day! Oh, Liza Minnelli was in that scene too...
Daphne has that spunk as Mimi. She set the character for Mimi perfectly. Dawson was good as well being Mimi. But Daphne's Mimi will be epic!!
ice krim i agree! Glad someone else also thinks so, too!
ice krim .r
ice krim .
ice krim rr
I feel like acting wise Daphne's Mimi was more young, fun, and flirty and Dawson's was a more sensitive wise but still fun Mimi. I don't know why people hate on daphne's Mimi so much she was everything Mimi should be, even though her singing wasn't absolutely amazing.
they are all so young! and they still got it!!
I am extremely happy that I saw the play before it left Broadway. The movie does not do the play justice. It is soooo much better live, so emotional!
You guys are so damn harsh, Daphne is a very good singer. Not sexy enough? This was the first big stage incarnation of the show, characters evolve as more people portray them.
She was great. I cant believe how critical people are of her.
I really appreciate the charm of the original cast, but my favorite Mimi is still Rosario. I love Angel as Wilson- he's the only one for me.
Wilson is very talented and nice. We met once at his party. He is a fan of Hamilton.
This is the best video in the universe of UA-cam:,)
I Love Daphne!!!!
Look at my boy Wilson in his fucking element as Angel
Anthony is amazing... so powerful.
GREAT video!!
Adams voice sounds a lot deeper here tbh, in the movie his voice had more of a whiny sort of tone.
Glad I saw the original cast.
they're all so young... blows my mind!
They were all so young! But I have to say, Tracie Thoms will always be my favorite Joanne and Rosario Dawson will always be my favorite Mimi
Ariel Broyles I also agree
Tracee is made for Daphne
The whole original cast had something so special going.
I LOVE ANTHONY RAPP!!!
This is sooo cool! Thanks for posting!
i agree. i LOVE this show
I love RENT :D thanks for the vid

LUCKY!!! And yeah I used to hate her voice but now I'm in love

Daphne brought me to tears with her Without You and Goodbye Love when I heard the CD, which was before I got to see the show.
lol 11 years late but please tell me you have all the performances i'd die for it
adam kinda looks like cindy lou who from that angle ngl
their microphones are hilarious
Interesting how Adam is playing an acoustic guitar in here instead of an electric one
Just gonna come out and say it, I love Daphne Rubin Vega as Mimi. There.
Marie Wood me too!
Me too
and me
Yeah her voice is perfect. I like the little bit of raspy-ness it has
Marie Wood with all due respect I thought her take me out 2night performance was horrible.
Not to be mean but in this vid Roger looks like a who from whooville and that’s the tea
best musical ever.
Adam Pascal played Rodger in the movie also, right? How come he had long hair in the movie?
Different artistic take.
I can easily notice the hair change but I don't mind.
I honestly thought he look better with long hair myself.
GuardianAngel871 yeah he is more of a rock star with long hair so I prefer the long hair
Adam probably wanted to grow it out...Its very complex i know.
It seems like almost all the cast was in the movie as well
Mark is my dream role when I grow up
That was beautiful!
Anthony Zayas You going to watch Rent Live on Fox Sunday night
Manuel Orozco I did lol
Anthony Zayas And i liked it but im still bummed the whole show wasn't live
My favorite mimis are Daphne and Renee
Does anybody else think Angel's hair is longer in this one? I thought it was always a short black bob.
yeah! she looks so young! :D
Okay, I've looked everywhere and I'm desperate but I still hope... If they filmed this than there should be a full version?..
Yes. In the NY Public Library.
@@darth_kal-el mmmmm, cool, so accessible...
Ahhhh Rent makes me so happy!! It does weird things to my brain (In a good way)

Is nobody going to ask how this person even got such footage?
Paradox Box it was made to go out to the public.
I don't think this was from Broadway itself. I think these were from a dress rehearsal, or something.
mark loved him in the movie
I think I can help ya out with this issue of rent; "ya see, in the mart of competitive commerce...", Coen Brothers
Personally, I prefer Daphne's voice over Rosario's. It may just be because I've listened to the OB recording about twenty-two times as many times than the movie but I just feel like her voice just embodies Mimi
Llamatacos295 sammmmeeee
i agree 100%
Ditto
Llamatacos295 Makes sense
I'm the opposite
I'm use to movie casts soundtrack
I didnt think they looked old in the movie from the looks of it they all have baby faces they didnt age much
I get she is the original but Rosario Dawson is a the better and best mini, singing, and dancing and acting is so much better
Wow compared to there movie one they r soooooo young it's amazing!!! Love them all!!!
crystal knighton well 6 of them are from the cast in this video.....
That pretty cool Tommy, what your favorite scene you have done on Smash.
Not all of them came back for the movie
I personally prefer Will Chase's rendition better. :P
So basically in the original Angel is a transgender woman and in the movie she's a drag queen? I'm confused XD
+Perri Upp nonono hes a drag queen if you look up his funeral it states that he is a drag queen
we actually don’t know. i prefer to say that angel is a drag queen, as the actor says so. i believe larson would have differentiated that to him
Angel is a drag queen but also a transgender woman. She has that attitude and style of drag but still identifies as a woman.
JulietteMarie that's not how that works. a drag queen is a male who dresses as a female. a transgender woman is a male who changes their gender to live as a female. you can't be both, it doesn't work like that. although, the lines between gender and sexuality were much more grey in the late 80's/ early 90's.

Yea Renée's voice is my favorite
My favorite voice for Mimi was Rosario because she gave a bit of raspiness that Mimi was supposed to have but I loved Daphne's portrayal of Mimi it was always so raw.

Ellie May I agree with you. She fit the style perfectly. I love Rosario Dawson as Mimi in the MOVIE. Daphne was amazing in stage version
What else is weird that in all the videos of Rosario as Mimi the comments are the other way and people liked Daphne’s Mimi better lol
nope. I've seen videos. they are not nearly as good as the original boradway cast.
i must say that you don't spell no one like that
I am sorry to say. I have seen Rent on stage, in the movies and more than one time again. I keep trying to like it and simply cannot.Sorry.
I really don't like daphne as mimi. She just has a kind of nasal voice, but she can belt. Mimi in the movie was better. I love roger's pants.
Mimi sounds awful! I know that this is the original cast and they should represent how the future should be like, but good god! Anyone would be better than her! Emmy Rosseum could be a better Mimi!
Daniel Vanden Bosch renee was so good as mimi!! way better than daphne.
dapne played an old NY addict perfectly. He picked her for the part for a reason. Addicts are not supposed to be polished and it was the 90s. Her energy gave off a fragile, vulnerable addict. She was made for the part.
Daphne Ruben Vega's voice is horrible! Rosario Dawson's is better.
Anthony Rapp Lover I do enjoy Rosario and Renee protrayal of MiMi
Bro daphne was amazing you just don’t know it
Anthony Rapp Lover you must remember there’s a difference with singing live and pre-recorded singing.
🤮 Daphne Rubin Vegas voice is so cute and raspy she owned the role of Mimi much better than Rosario
Dont like this Mimi... Renee did better. But she is still better than Vanessa Hudgens
The MiMi character is horrendous
you can all have your opinions, but don’t bash daphne and say her voice is “horrible” or that “she isn’t sexy enough!” she is PERFECT for this role. look at the energy she has! it’s absolutely amazing. she’s playing a drug addict 19 year old who has so much ENERGY. she’s moving around on stage a lot, no wonder her voice is gonna be a little off. she has an amazing voice. and it isn’t always about singing! it’s how you preform. she’s an amazing performer. i love rosario and renee but no one will never have the energy like daphne portrayed. remember, this is broadway. you only have one shot on stage and if you mess up you mess up. rosario probably had many times where she screwed up and got to fix them because she was in the movie. let’s not compare the actresses on who played better, they were all equally amazing and put the best into portraying their part as they could :)
