      same way with this movie. love a movie that just shows, without having to directly state every little thing. julian is practically the inverse of the driver. driver has something worth fighting for that he loses, Julian has nothing worth fighting for and is forced into upholding something he doesn't believe in. both are fantastic.

    If david lynch directed it everyone would love it... this movie is great one of my favourites

    • @fuckem187
      @fuckem187 8 років тому +3

      +caz Wrong and False. I love lynch although Inland Empire was shit and Lost highway was okay. Not everything he makes is gold. I love Refn too, this is probably my least favourite film of his. Visually it might actually be his best but it lacks atmosphere and tension which is very unlike Refn or Lynch (there are some great scenes in this however)

    • @carolinaapintoo
      @carolinaapintoo 8 років тому +12

      +Lewis C hm I have to disagree with you I don't know if you're aware of inland empires background? David was experiencing with a digital camera, basically the whole movie is an experiment. he put some of the scenes together and thought might as well make a movie out of it, that's why the camera work looks so different and the scenes don't seem to correlate at times. however, after a more extensive analysis, you'll come to realise that it's actually well thought for something that came out of the blue. that's why I believe that if lynch made it everyone would love it, simply because coming from him it can be random but it sure won't lack meaning. people expect it and applause. for refn that doesn't seem to happen. drive, one of his best movies from my point of view, was booed at cannes (only the greatest are to be honest) And most people hated it. I take you as a cinema fan, would you agree that drive was one of his best works ? the problem with refn is that he's still adjusting the world to his style, in some years people will appreciate his art. as for the lack of tension, I also disagree entirely. I was on the edge of my sit while watching this movie. maybe you say that because of the slow pace ? nor sure. just suggesting but I do believe the slow pace and dream like imagery is very important to contrast hell with heaven

    • @carolinaapintoo
      @carolinaapintoo 8 років тому +4

      +Lewis C I did in fact mistaken it
      I'm a teen yes but what does that imply ? just because I'm a teen doesn't mean I have the same train of thought as the next one does that sounded awfully condescending.. we're merely discussing ideas and I don't have to agree with you. it doesn't make me any better or worse having a divergent opinion
      I believe movies are not randomly made just because you don't get the full picture by watching it once. you might stare at a picture for the longest time and not comprehend it's meaning. cinema is art therefore subjective. David lynchs recurring theme is the separation of the real world and and dreamy one. such has happened in blue velvet, and without post analyses what you get from it is that oh okay so basically Frank is a mobster and Jeffrey is a hero. and that's utterly wrong. not all movies demand a further analysis but this specific genre I dare say neo noir with surrealistic traits does. this is not like high school musical, these are not class b movies these are art movies and just like art thought needs to be put into them and you can not like this movie tastes are tastes. and I believe that well made allegories are genious and there's nothing wrong with that. I've seen bad movies that asked for a further analyses that to me were awful. don't generalize my mind just from one opinion... I thought the metaphors from this movie were very well thought and the acting was great. so was the imagery and soundtrack and that's why I love it

And the karaoke scenes were beautiful. The police officers watching the “antagonist” singing at the end reminded me of angels watching God sing, based on the themes in the film. To the people who are quick to jump on the OGF hate bandwagon I think it's important to note that a filmmakers' intentions matter. When Drive came out I got in an argument with someone who didn't like the film because it didn't have enough action in it - which is like saying you didn't like The Exorcist because it didn't make you laugh. Sometimes a person's "critique" of a film says nothing about the film itself and everything about the person who's doing the critiquing.
    Only God Forgives brings out these type of half-assed critics by the droves (which is one of the reasons why I love the movie). It weeds out people who simply look at it at face value. To say that the film is "poorly written" or has "horrible character development" or that it's "slow" is not a valid critique of the movie. Again, it's like saying you don't like a movie like The Exorcist because you didn't find it funny. A filmmakers' intentions are very important.

    • @quasiknorto
      @quasiknorto 9 років тому +6

      Jesse Gumbarge Those are actually pretty valid, normal critiques. I personally didn't care for it because it never really hit the notes it seemed like it was striving to hit. It worked on a tonal level but beyond that it seemed like it didn't communicate it's ideas that well. And until you watch Bela Tarr, Tsai Ming-Liang, Tarkovsky or even Refn's Valhalla Rising don't tell me that pace was the issue because those movies are slow but still feel like there's thrust. This just seemed needlessly deliberate and not much more than an exercise in style, the same letdown The Limits of Control gave me. Beautiful to see, tedious to watch.

    • @fuckem187
      @fuckem187 8 років тому +7

      +Jesse Gumbarge Intentions dont matter if the film-maker fails to deliver the ideas properly or in a cinematic way. Such is the case here. It is messy and lacks tension or intrigue which is surprising coming from Refn (who is one of my favourite directors)

I fcking adore this film now. I think the expectations I had going in are what stopped me from 100% loving it the first time.

    He really has a great conviction of style AND substance. One of the things I loved about "Drive" is that with the exception of Cook and Christina Hendricks' character, you can identify with everyone in that film. It will probably go down as one of the best films of the decade. I can see myself putting it in my top ten.

    Weakest of all Refn's films. Valhalla Rising, Bronson, Drive, Pusher series or Fear X are better. Stunning cinematography and soundtrack though as always. Yes I got what he was going for in this film especially the metaphors but you have to execute it well. Some scenes in this were excellent like the dream sequences and the hallways. But for example the torture scene was just....boring and too long, which is something that I never say of Refn's violence in films. He always says if you love or hate my film then ive succeeded and I agree that most of his films really affected me (good thing) but OGF was messy and tedious at points.

    • @ds37

      +Lewis C wholeheartedly agree with everything you said man. It's style over substance, there's no denying that it's a stunning movie to look at but it's just plain boring and awkward, even the performance were kinda over the top. Especially's Kristin Scott Thomas'.

      The movie was properly misunderstood. The director had a hit with 'drive' but here he allowed himself to be more artistic with this one, the crowd who wanted a hollywood blockbuster like 'drive' was let down. But if you actually watch the movie with the right mindset, it's not bad at all. The story and plot was secondary to the cinematography and atmosphere and that is probably what threw a lot of people off it. Which is of course fair.

    This type of movie is not for most people, but I personally love these types of films. This movie might be lacking in some major ways and be strange and disturbing enough to be hugely off-putting to the average viewer. But if you’re the type of person who is patient, open to interpreting and analyzing little details, and can appreciate a work of art, then the dazzling, neon soaked visuals, brutal violence, and the intense atmosphere this movie creates should give you more than enough to appreciate the ride.
