It's like gazing into a void that slowly sucks you in but you can't stop watching. Hell, I don't know what acting wizardry Jake Gyllenhaal did, but he hardly looks human in this role. Saw this on Netflix and I was really surprised. Starts off a bit slow but then it gets really good. Keeps u on the edge of your seat cause youre constantly wondering what he'll do next or how far he'll go. The climax left me speechless. This movie is definately disturbing and almost traumatic, but in a good way haha. After it finished I had to just sit in silence with my head down, hands clasped together and take a deep breath just to process it and decompress. Theres a lot to be learned from this film, about the good AND bad sides of ambition.

I think that line "I would never ask you do to anything that I wouldn't do myself" sums up Jake's character perfectly. It lulls his partner into such a false sense of security of "Okay so this dude is fair he wont push" when we know that he will do literally anything to achieve the goals he sets. All his emotions were fake and planned, he did everything that would satisfy him, he was extremely selfish. He basically killed his employee without actually killing him himself, he tricked him. He’s a psychopath just minus the killing.

one of the best? that's an overstatement if i've ever heard one. his best works were the machinist, the prestige, american psycho and the fighter was pretty good. compare those to gyllenhaals best works and you'll see why it's an insult.
also, please don't tell me the batman trilogy is what makes you think bale is one of the best actors alive.. he was terrible in that trilogy and was carried by a fantastic supporting cast and good script. tdk was all about joker and rises was all about bane. those two, along with the supporting cast, are what made those movies amazing.

    Jake Gyllenhaal:-
    1) Gives the best character acting performance of 2014 by far and was rumored to rack up every single award of 2014.
    2) Gets ranked at number 1 by almost every article on Google for best acting performances of 2014.
    3) Gives arguably the most chilling and most unique performance of 21st century and one of the most accurate portrayals of a manipulative sociopath.
    4) Every single emotion and expression is so well calculated and pitch perfectly delivered that you forget that Gyllenhaal is on screen.
    5) Most importantly, backbone of one of the most timeless characters and movies of 21st century.
Doesn't even get nominated at all and loses to a generic Oscar baity paraplegic performance that was limited from the start till the end in one of the most forgettable movies of 2010s. Logic of Academy Awards committee!!

The Philosopher yes I agree, Birdman did not have the impact on the audience like this one or the Whiplash. But what makes it in my top three list is the way they have shot this movie, made it look like the whole movie was shot in a single shot and it was on point with no errors at all. And they tried to show us the real life of an actor, what lies behind that fake smile of all the celebrities out there. Brings out the memory of Robin Williams, The way he made us laugh and he himself was suffering from depression, that darkness which was hiding behind that amazing smile and that humor. That and the way they had shot the movie made it one of my favorite. And yes The Grand Budapest was amazing, it's clearly in my top 10list.

+Tobias Wheaton So..... you're watching the trailer after you already saw the movie? Or you're watching the trailer even though you never plan to watch the move?

I like to watch movies after only having some knowledge, then I tend to watch trailers/reviews. How about you?

    • @SomeDudeOnline
      @SomeDudeOnline 9 років тому

Tobias Wheaton I watch trailers prior to watching the movie to see if I might be interested in watching the movie. However, I do agree that they often show the whole damn movie. So, if it looks like I might enjoy the movie 30 seconds to a minute into the trailer, I'll stop the trailer and watch the movie. I don't see the point in watching the trailer after the movie though.

This was the most accurate and realistic portrayal of a sociopath. He didn’t lose at the end because that’s how a lot of people get successful in real life and how the people around him were a part of making people like him thrive and even the system itself

My friend recommended this movie to me and I recommended him Arrival(2016) and we both came at truce.
After watching a wired interview of Jake and Ryan Reynolds, I can't even imagine Jake doing such a role, and he did it brilliantly.
His character taught me something really important and that is:
    1) If you really want to succeed in your life, you need to have passion for what you're doing and what you're going to do.
    2) Gather all the proper knowledge and bring it to practical life.
    3) Without Risks you cannot grow and you need to plan continuously for your upcoming projects .
    4) Plan towards utilising your resource to every bit of it. For example in the movie, he could've shown the face and the vehicle of those criminals in the first footage itself, which would've given him more than 15G but he rather saved it for later to make it even bigger. That's one video utilised to it's extent.
    5) Never believe your boss, check for yourself or you could get in trouble and for the worse case scenario lose your life just like his assistant did.

This movie made me realize how filthy and immoral the news making process is. It's all about selling a product, all about ratings. No credibility is left when a business makes the news, instead of a non-profit organization.
But it also criticizes us, the viewers, who are drawn to violence and crime, incentivizing the news to give us exactly what we want, more violence and gore.
Lastly, this is a story about the weakness of empathy. It shows that not having a conscience can take away the barriers that are keeping you from succeeding, in this ruthless society that favors the bold and fearless.

It’s truly surprising how the emotional intensity builds throughout this film. (Kinda sneaks up on you, really.) Gyllenhaal is an absolute monster in both the best and worst ways in this movie, in that the character is a totally barbaric sociopath, and that Jake had the brilliant acting chops to nail that character to a tee. Oscar-worthy performance, no question.

I want to start off by putting it out there that I honestly think Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the most UNDERRATED actors of modern times.
This movie (Kind of) reminds me of "Cable Guy" in the way that Jake Gyllenhaal plays an odd ball type of character and to a certain degree you've not got much of an idea where the film is even going.
Far from being the best motion picture ever made granted but it's not actually THAT bad either for what it is.
