So glad I found your video of G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital. Saw the house (0:59) I lived with my family from 1975-80. This was the area where medical staff with their families lived. Interesting time growing up on the grounds of a state mental hospital in the middle of nowhere (7 miles SE of Arcadia on SR 31). Brought back some good memories of growing up there. Thank you!
It's was called Carlstrom Field and was used to train WW II Pilots (mostly British) 23 british pilots crashed there. Also in 1987 for the 70th anniversary of the field opening they had a fly in air show. They mowed a grass air strip for the event. During the air show there was a crash and 1 guy died. The mental hospital opened in 1947, it was called the G pierce Wood memorial hospital. It closed in 2002
This place is an old air field that later became a mental hospital, it was closed in the late nineties then became a juvenile offender prison. I worked at the hospital in 1989 and 1990. The property had staff housing, classrooms, a church and other buildings. The property was sold in 2015 and is being renovated by the new owner. I recently went there and talked to the owner to see if I could look around but was told no one was allowed on the site. A fence was recently put up and yes there is security on site.
+Master Oden Awesome man, thanks for the update. With the number of people interested in this place, he would be smart to start charging a small fee for people that wanted to explore the grounds. Otherwise you can do it the old fashion way and risk getting caught I guess.
It should be turn back to the public for giving shelter for the poor and homeless including former vets. I don't understand why such a place laid into waste!
the structure of the house will be weak. which means they need to rebuild the whole town or try to repair every house. which will cost the tax payer a lot of money.
Mustafa Ali , why so that it can look like a ghetto in a couple of weeks or less. When you just give someone something this important they will just crap all over it since they don't have to pay for anything..
you can't believe everything u see lmfao this city is in my County ppl live here. that's why the grass are cut. it has many abandoned places but ppl live in some of these ran down houses and own some of the rundown business. also many parts of Arcadia fl have beautiful homes.
I live in Clearwater over by Tampa Bay. When People think of FL they think Miami or Disney. They don't realize that mostly only the coast of the State is occupied. The whole center of the State is basically...well...nothing. This is completely feasible that there would be a abandoned town out there. The only thing is it looks like it hasn't been abandoned long. :/
Hey guys, thanks for all the comments. Just an update, this place has been bought (that explains the grass) and is now entirely fenced off. There is also 24/7 security, and they have started to re-purpose some of the buildings since this video was shot. So for anyone wanting to visit, you either need to be urbex ninja level 100 or just scratch it off your list all together. There are still some other really doable spots in Florida as seen in this video.. ua-cam.com/video/ys2IwsiaXpQ/v-deo.html Every single shot from this title sequence was shot in Florida. Good luck, and be safe out there!
+Mandy Rodriguez he stumbled on it while bike riding apparently. I just read an article about him finding it and that's how I came about his channel. You gotta think, if he was paying attention where he was riding he could easily back track and find it again.
+Anomalous Films someone wrote an article about you finding this place. It popped up on my facebook timeline. I don't know of it's true but it said you randomly found this place.

+Fred Zee Well folks we finally got the expert here on the discussion, seems to know a lot about this place, maybe you guys can direct all your questions to him from now on since he seems to be the authority on the subject.
It does look like an inactive military base..the military tends to just abandon bases all the time...this place has to be on record somewhere...also eglin afb is near pensacola not even remotely close to the everglades....no expert here just calling out an opinion...anyways in the the beginning of the video there is a street sign obviously I can't make out what it says but aren't all street names on record somewhere? Also there are powerlines everywhere..wouldn't the electric company in the area have record of all power lines in the area? To say that this town is unknown is not likely but it's probably unknown to alot of people...it does seem weird tho that an average person like me can't just Google around to try to find this town or base I've tried for hours with no luck....it does seem pretty odd and a bit creepy :-)
+Char Johnson Guys the fact of the matter is I know the history, its not some big mystery.. I am not giving out details of the history for obvious reasons, I am being vague and misleading on purpose.. not to be a dick, but to help preserve. I have been exploring since I was a kid, and I have seen lots of spots go to shit because people don't respect the locations. Even if you are not breaking windows and spray painting dicks on everything.. doesn't matter. All it takes is one careless move like having location services enabled on your phone and uploading a pic to IG/FB.. then voila the whole world knows how to get there and thats when things start going south. It happened at Howie Mansion, it happened at the Victorian Treehouse.. it's happened at countless other locations. If you really want to go, you will do your homework (as I have) and you will find it. Stop asking me for clues, as I have been very clear about not wanting to share the location.. again not to be a jerk, but to help preserve.

+Anomalous Films with all due respect you are more than likely not the first person to stumble onto this area. However you are more than likely the first one to put it on UA-cam.. If what you say was true, why hasn't any of the "locals" to the area done what you fear? It is not a gated or secluded or hidden area, so all the locals within 15-20 miles of this must know of its existence. Why hasn't there been any damage to it in the short time its questionably been abandoned? Not asking you to answer these questions because you obviously do not know. It's more of a rhetorical question and me thinking outside the box when stuff like this shows up. Just some food for thought!
It won't be destroyed it is protected by urbanex ninja 100's on bicycle ... besides now that it's sold and guarded by paramilitary with high capacity magazine weapons. You'd have to hit it from the air (field) with fighter jets in order to destroy it. Either that or crash the fence with armored vehicle(s). You couldn't do it with a bicycle and a go pro camera. You'd be killed or captured. Instead it will be bulldozed and destroyed by commercialization.
I took a family trip to Daytona last week and stumbles across this place on my drive. I had seen the video before hand and looked at every comment hoping someone posted it because I really wanted to check this place out. I found it and it is exactly as it looks in the video. Very Cool !!
Nice video, I drive by here all the time and was wondering was the behind the fences. The houses out front right by the main road usually have cars outside, must still be someone around.
It would be awesome to find the private owner and ask if you could film a horror movie there. It would be so freaky because it would look more realistic, and not like some crappy movie set.
it's owned by power auto corporation. they train people to drive race cars or something. they have plans to tear most of it down to build a track and hotel.
update to those that might be curious. there is now 24/7 security. and they WILL put you in jail for trespassing. best bet just leave it alone and find something, somewhere else that a million other people havent found already..
this is the old G. Pierce Woods State Mental Hospital. I used to work there. Bush closed it down back in 2000. It was fun to work there many fun memories.
call me dumb but i would first check out what reason they abandoned it and if it wasn't for a dangerous reason actually try to start it up again....if not i can still choose a favorite house and live there
Fascinating in its details. Bits of it do indeed look like government/military housing. Some of the grass appears to have been mown in the recent past. One can see a section where this is the case. Other grasses are that tough grass found in Florida that doesn't grow too quickly. I think the only thing I'd have been concerned about is whether the site was used for some kind of awful experiment.
Actually it was a Juvy and a mental hospital, both of my grandmothers worked at the hospital. Pretty creepy though can't deny it. There's a pasture right behind it which is next to my grandfathers house and we used to ride horses to it. Arcadia is a small down man. We're getting a Publix and that's a huge step for us. All we have now is a Walmart and a Winn-Dixie lol. And it is mowed because it's gonna be turned into a race track soon.
Yeah, if this is where I am think it is. It is/was owned by those hospital company. When the hospital shut down, they gave eviction notices to the remaining residents. Over the years they've tried to get real estate investors interested to no avail (the recession of 09 didn't help either); mainly because how isolated the small township is, but the majority of the buildings and houses were (and likely) are still in good shape.
Its a race track now, almost wish it wasnt and was still abandoned so it could be explored in the environment portrayed in this footage. The history behind it is still incredible though!
One can tell from the condition of the buildings and the lack of overgrowth of vegetation, that either it was abandoned just last week, or someone is keeping the lawns up pretty good.
I've actually been there many times while growing up. My grandmother, mother in law and sister in laws' parents all worked there at one time. It was pretty creepy then too! I'm glad they are doing something with it now.
Both of my grandmothers worked at the hospital too lol. Pretty creepy though can't deny it. There's a pasture right behind it which is next to my grandfathers house and we used to ride horses to it. before I even read below I could tell this was likely an old army air base bc it looks very similar to one in my hometown except it's not totally abandoned but verrrrry low income, like last chance and one step above homeless low.
Need to check out other parts of Florida for abandoned places. I've been to pretty much every one in Jacksonville and they're all boring now but surprisingly have no security. Would love to go in the hospital there. I really want to find an abandoned psych ward or factory
Yeah i live about 10 mins away from there. Its been alot of things over the years airbase, mental hospital, juvenile detention center and now a racetrack/driver training school and soon to be hotel.
This was a Mental Hospital called G. Pierce Woods in Arcadia, FL that was opened in 1947 then it was transformed into a Juvenile detention center in 2002, the Juvenile Center was closed in 2011. It's not a Ghost town people who live in the Area know they have plans to turn it into a rally track. It holds a lot of history for people in the area.
Cool it looks kinda like homestead! there is an abandon area by the military base down there! you be amaze how many abandon places there are in Florida alone! the most recent one I found was in Calhoun County Florida deep in the woods by the river there is an old cotton town that was abandon due to a river flood! there was houses, kitchen houses and stuff like that just frozen in time!
Do you know any other abandoned places in Miami or near? I knew about the one by krome avenue. I was gonna go there with a few buddies of mines but it was taken down unfortunately
only thing left around Miami is what's left of the Aerojet facility. Miami's development boom has consumed any abandoned places that existed and pooped condos all over 'em.
I don't know of any other abandoned towns in Florida, but every single one of the places in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ys2IwsiaXpQ/v-deo.html are in Florida and is totally doable.
+Anomalous Films +Barry Asch after some research we found the place. NO its not in the Everglades but I am sure the structures and trees gave that away right away. Anyways we wont be posting the name, address or coordinates so please don't ask but will be visiting it very soon for photos.
I been through most of the building there and there are several families living on the property.G.Pierce Wood mental hospital..was also a army air Corp facility ,juvenile detention center and privately owned now with a lease for several buildings by Desoto county. Lots of history rotting away on that property!
I'm from Glasgow Scotland. where do you do your hunting for places. ie country or state. did you find out what this place used to be and why its not in use.
I live in Central FL, East Orlando. I am directly Parallel to KSC 30miles directly west. Very interesting stuff. I have Gas, a reliable car, GPS, Nikon 1, and Garmin Verb. Guess I just need to get my ass up and explore!! Although it would be nice if we could do a mini group meet up, carpool and explore.
+Anomalous Films This place caught my eye while browsing Maps recently... Not much information regarding the site but from what I did find out it.. might be a retired Lockheed Martin stealth radar testing facility. Dropped Pin near Orange County, FL goo.gl/maps/jeuthQUY9u12
That is not a radar facility. It is actually a laser range finding and weapons testing facility. If you look down the range you will see a big white circle with a pupil, behind the laser target. This is whats left of a big eye that is meant for pilots to see and not look down at it to prevent them from getting an eye full of infrared laser. www.bing.com/mapspreview?&ty=18&q=28.371757975141048%2c-81.07786864706517&mb=28.37305~-81.079052~28.370654~-81.075119&tt=32709%2c%20FL&tsts1=%2526ty%253d18%2526q%253d28.371757975141048%25252c-81.07786864706517%2526mb%253d28.37305~-81.079052~28.370654~-81.075119&tstt1=32709%2c%20FL&cp=nqvsn48795m8&lvl=19&style=b&ftst=1&ftics=True&v=2&sV=1&form=S00027
i went here yesterday and there were definitely people doing some kinda campaign work recently but there was no security and the place was completely deserted. most of it clearly hadn't been touched in years but there were parts where it looked like there might have been some kinda work going on, but in any case there was zero security when i went, me and a friend were able to roam around for about 4-5 hours unbothered the grass/foliage was pretty out of control too. someone might have had some plans for it at some point but then realized there's really nothing you can do with it. i can't imagine someone paying for 24/7 security for an abandoned place in bumfuck florida, half the buildings in florida are abandoned lol
I have to say, I don't find it in the least bit creepy. One of the buildings shown was actually a school still in use 10 years ago. The homes were still lived in even more recently than that. Maybe I see it that way since I went to the school there briefly and saw this place daily, and knew someone who lived in the homes who I visited a few times. (Or maybe it's because it's a few minutes drive so it's just common place here.)
Well I found out the hard way just this week that this place is clearly not abandoned any more and there is some one living on the property who had the law get me arrested. I suggest do not go snooping around or trespass on the property unless you want to spend a night in jail for something not that great to see.
One of the buildings was also G Peirce Wood which was a mental hospital. So I guess it's sort of creepy. But my grandma worked there for 30 years and nothing paranormal happened so uh yeah.
it was called G Pierce Woods Mental Hospital and has been empty for about 10 yrs now I'm from that area and never seen it had to make some call for info i will be checking it out next time im there
I live here in Arcadia,Fl...this is the old Mental Hospital and had no stores out there just housing for some staff it was shut down years ago and is abandoned now but was bought out and will be a race trac in in near future and it is also private property!
The place looks fairly well-kept (except for the roadway), and appears to be a conventional country town - except for the lack of people. Query: just WHAT is going on? Was the town once a going concern? Why was it suddenly deserted? Was it by choice, or was the population removed, and for what reason? Contamination? Disease? Eminent domain? Just what the Hell happened to this town, and all of its people? This is very bizarre...
It was a former military base turned state mental hospital that was shut down by Jeb Bush in the early 2000s. Sadly not nearly as crazy of a story as you may think!
Actually it was a Juvy and a mental hospital, both of my grandmothers worked at the hospital. Pretty creepy though can't deny it. G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital aka Carlstrom Field aka DeSoto County Juvenile Correctional Institute US 31 Arcadia, Fl This area was once known as Carlstrom Field, and it was established in 1917 to train military pilots for World War I. The airfield facilities consisted of a total of 90 buildings & structures. After World War I, Carlstrom Field was placed in an inactive status in 1922, and all of the buildings were sold to private individuals & removed by 1926. With the onset of World War II, the Carlstrom Field location was chosen to be the site for a contract flying training school for Royal Air Force aviators, run by the Embry Riddle Academy. A new facility was built adjacent to the remains of the WW I-era facilities, and it was dedicated in 1941. Carlstrom Field turned out the last of its cadets in 1945, and it closed later that year. Both Carlstrom & Dorr Fields were sold to the State of Florida for a total of $1. The complex was converted into a mental health facility named the G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital. In 2002, the mental hospital closed, but it soon became the Desoto County Juvenile Correctional Complex. Categories: youth detention center which closed in 2011.
Postwar use[edit] Closed after the war, Carlstrom Field became the site of the G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital, a psychiatric hospital, in 1947. Many of World War II era buildings remained in use by the hospital, with former six-plane hangars serving as maintenance buildings. The band shell, site of dances and other entertainment during the war, remains on the site. In 2002, the G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital was closed; until 2011 the DeSoto County Juvenile Correctional Facility operated on the site.[5] The only remembrance of Carlstrom field today is a plaque on the administration building placed when it was refurbished by the state of Florida in 1992, and a tired B-17 weather vane on top of the building. The Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia is the final resting-place of twenty-three RAF cadets who died while in the United States for training. A special marker at the cemetery recognizes their service and a ceremony is held in their memory each year on Memorial Day. Though the original World War II blueprints called for six hangars at Carlstrom Field, only five were ever constructed. Of those five, the two built first survive. Also still standing are the mess hall, band shell, canteen, administration building, water and sewage plants, and two training buildings. All that remains from World War I version of Carlstrom Field are concrete pads along Highway 31 upon which the wooden hangars stood, and across the highway, on private property, is a concrete full-scale outline of a World War I biplane that is approximately one foot tall. It was used for target practice by filling it up with water and cadets would shoot at it from the air and be able to see "hits" when their bullets struck the water. In 2014, the state of Florida sold the property to Power Auto Corporation, for the construction of a driver training facility and a hotel.[6]
It was way back when, and then became a state mental facility......then became a Juvenile detention center......and closed......all due to funding.....or lack of. This is in Arcadia Fl off Hwy 31

it is an air base later mental hospital, and most recently a juvenile detention facility. state mowed it cared after it regularly. it was just bought last year and likely will be torn down and converted into something else.
Carlstrom Field ... But A+ for being right anyway. I should have paid attention to you the first time ... but the Google Earth Aerial (Satellite) imagery didn't seem to match the video ... not until I got led back there again and matched up the water tower and bright orange roof building.

Rob Lowery the lsd experiments took place at ft McClellan al.(Anniston al) though they may have happened at numerous locations.
What part of the State is it in?
Rich I think so, It sure looks like one of facilities used during that time to do those horrible experiments

When you realize there are homeless in the US and you see this, it seems such a waste.
have them get a job rather then getting comfortable living on the streets receiving handouts.
+AtoTheRon I live in Orlando and work 35-40 hour weeks and I'm homeless, so sometimes there's other factors to keep in mind
+AtoTheRon Because comfortable is the one word that describes living on the streets.

It's more of a rhetorical question and me thinking outside the box when stuff like this shows up. Just some food for thought!
It's a mental hospital and it's located in Florida, Arcadia your welcome
I just want to thank you for not posting whee this place is located. It would be sad to see it destroyed.
They have caretakers there.
Does anybody know why those perfectly usable houses are left to deteriorate?
27°8'8"N 81°48'3"W its the location
I took a family trip to Daytona last week and stumbles across this place on my drive. I had seen the video before hand and looked at every comment hoping someone posted it because I really wanted to check this place out. I found it and it is exactly as it looks in the video. Very Cool !!
I go to the school next to that place there was smoke coming out of one houses chimney and nobody lives there
This ghost town would be perfect for shooting an episode of the walking dead
Nice video, I drive by here all the time and was wondering was the behind the fences. The houses out front right by the main road usually have cars outside, must still be someone around.
G. Pierce Wood, right?
It would be awesome to find the private owner and ask if you could film a horror movie there. It would be so freaky because it would look more realistic, and not like some crappy movie set.
Totally!
Next Time on, The Walking Dead..
it's owned by power auto corporation. they train people to drive race cars or something. they have plans to tear most of it down to build a track and hotel.
Its going to be a rally track.
Nice to see a ghost town with relatively fresh mowed grass. Kappa
Looks like the, Ghosts" keep the grass mowed? If this is lehigh Acres, it is not a ghost town, plenty of people living there.
update to those that might be curious. there is now 24/7 security. and they WILL put you in jail for trespassing. best bet just leave it alone and find something, somewhere else that a million other people havent found already..
this is the old G. Pierce Woods State Mental Hospital. I used to work there. Bush closed it down back in 2000. It was fun to work there many fun memories.
George Johnson Regan closed all of the mental hospitals.
It was fun to work at a State Mental Hospital ?
call me dumb but i would first check out what reason they abandoned it and if it wasn't for a dangerous reason actually try to start it up again....if not i can still choose a favorite house and live there
is their any birds eye view of the place? would be much appreciate it
Fascinating in its details.
Not to be super dark but its a reality this is more then likely is 1940's-50's era US internment Camp and not an abandoned town
I used to work here when it was a state psychiatric facility by the name of G. Pierce woods. Hell, I even had on ground housing.
looks like an abandon military base.
Its a race track now, almost wish it wasnt and was still abandoned so it could be explored in the environment portrayed in this footage. The history behind it is still incredible though!
Where is this?
It still looks exactly the same today. Nothing has been done to it yet.
how you know?
Sweet T still haven't done anything to it. I've gone a few times at night.
That's Erie when you see a town abandoned wondering why it is abandoned reminds you of Centraia Pennsylvana
I drove past it this a.m and drive past it all the time, always wondered about it and why it was so empty. It is on hwy 31 close to Arcadia.
Glenn Merrie Johnson-Thompson I drive past it all the time as well. It is currently in foreclosure and for sale again
Someone please explain how so many towns were just left to rot
Damon Tabriz it not in Lehigh acres it in desoto county Florida off highway 31.
One can tell from the condition of the buildings and the lack of overgrowth of vegetation, that either it was abandoned just last week, or someone is keeping the lawns up pretty good.
Read the description.
Arcadia is a small down man. We're getting a Publix and that's a huge step for us. All we have now is a Walmart and a Winn-Dixie lol.
before I even read below I could tell this was likely an old army air base bc it looks very similar to one in my hometown except it's not totally abandoned but verrrrry low income, like last chance and one step above homeless low.
Need to check out other parts of Florida for abandoned places. I've been to pretty much every one in Jacksonville and they're all boring now but surprisingly have no security. Would love to go in the hospital there. I really want to find an abandoned psych ward or factory
School #4 is pretty cool and creepy downtown Jacksonville to explore.
this isnt a super secret place. they race cars here now. i raced here a couple months ago. its just south of arcadia, fl. have fun everyone.
Yeah i live about 10 mins away from there. Its been alot of things over the years airbase, mental hospital, juvenile detention center and now a racetrack/driver training school and soon to be hotel.
really??? where is it excatly??? I mean just wondering...
It has always been interesting how areas like that are just up and abandoned
abandon airfield carlstorm smh was that so hard ppl this is the location go all you want
It's djj and g pierce wood mental hospital near Arcadia fl
Polk County? Did you go inside? The lawns looked mowed..
That's so crazy. Wonder if anyone has explored it and posted.
Could you message me about any other abandoned towns in central florida , looks like a nice place to go explore
I don't know of any other abandoned towns in Florida, but every single one of the places in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ys2IwsiaXpQ/v-deo.html are in Florida and is totally doable.
Welcome to Florida! Come on Vacation, Leave On Probation.
+Anomalous Films +Barry Asch after some research we found the place. NO its not in the Everglades but I am sure the structures and trees gave that away right away. Anyways we wont be posting the name, address or coordinates so please don't ask but will be visiting it very soon for photos.
+Jose Estevez Thank you for being respectful.
I been through most of the building there and there are several families living on the property.G.Pierce Wood mental hospital..was also a army air Corp facility ,juvenile detention center and privately owned now with a lease for several buildings by Desoto county. Lots of history rotting away on that property!
as long as we're all taking guesses at where this might be, I'm thinking its Buckingham Army Airfield near Naples FL
Buckingham is in Fort Myers and no, it's definitely not there. I'm thinking its by Punta Gorda or Arcadia.
it's just south of Arcadia on 31
I'm from Glasgow Scotland. where do you do your hunting for places. ie country or state. did you find out what this place used to be and why its not in use.
kk kl
This is clearly a retired military base. The grass is cut, no overgrowth. Keeping that way in case they need to use it in the future
Yeah man, get out there.. tons to see
+Anomalous Films
This place caught my eye while browsing Maps recently... Not much information regarding the site but from what I did find out it.. might be a retired Lockheed Martin stealth radar testing facility.
Dropped Pin
near Orange County, FL
goo.gl/maps/jeuthQUY9u12
That is not a radar facility. It is actually a laser range finding and weapons testing facility. If you look down the range you will see a big white circle with a pupil, behind the laser target. This is whats left of a big eye that is meant for pilots to see and not look down at it to prevent them from getting an eye full of infrared laser. www.bing.com/mapspreview?&ty=18&q=28.371757975141048%2c-81.07786864706517&mb=28.37305~-81.079052~28.370654~-81.075119&tt=32709%2c%20FL&tsts1=%2526ty%253d18%2526q%253d28.371757975141048%25252c-81.07786864706517%2526mb%253d28.37305~-81.079052~28.370654~-81.075119&tstt1=32709%2c%20FL&cp=nqvsn48795m8&lvl=19&style=b&ftst=1&ftics=True&v=2&sV=1&form=S00027
I live in East Orlando as well and am always down for some good urbexing.
That is kinda freaky. What and who was their before and why did they all leave?
I've looked on google the only thing I can find close to it is a base in Cross can someone please help put my mind at ease?
OP, can you please confirm if this shows on Google Earth in its abandoned state?
+Brent Adams Read down into the description
i went here yesterday and there were definitely people doing some kinda campaign work recently but there was no security and the place was completely deserted. most of it clearly hadn't been touched in years but there were parts where it looked like there might have been some kinda work going on, but in any case there was zero security when i went, me and a friend were able to roam around for about 4-5 hours unbothered
the grass/foliage was pretty out of control too. someone might have had some plans for it at some point but then realized there's really nothing you can do with it. i can't imagine someone paying for 24/7 security for an abandoned place in bumfuck florida, half the buildings in florida are abandoned lol
(Or maybe it's because it's a few minutes drive so it's just common place here.)
where is it???
Where is this located?
Well I found out the hard way just this week that this place is clearly not abandoned any more and there is some one living on the property who had the law get me arrested. I suggest do not go snooping around or trespass on the property unless you want to spend a night in jail for something not that great to see.
One of the buildings was also G Peirce Wood which was a mental hospital. So I guess it's sort of creepy. But my grandma worked there for 30 years and nothing paranormal happened so uh yeah.
it was called G Pierce Woods Mental Hospital and has been empty for about 10 yrs now I'm from that area and never seen it had to make some call for info i will be checking it out next time im there
it's actually only been abandoned for a couple years. I made deliveries there less than 3 years ago
this must be lehigh acres florida
I live here in Arcadia,Fl...this is the old Mental Hospital and had no stores out there just housing for some staff it was shut down years ago and is abandoned now but was bought out and will be a race trac in in near future and it is also private property!
so if i was looking to go their could u maybe give me address or name of the hospital so i can explore?.
I live in Arcadia too lol. Both of my grandmothers worked at the hospital before it closed in 02. I'm Dylan Ray btw we may have met.
+elysianfields49 Some of the lighting, like the pillar lights outside a brick school/office, is fairly modern, in the past 10-15 years.
It was a former military base turned state mental hospital that was shut down by Jeb Bush in the early 2000s. Sadly not nearly as crazy of a story as you may think!
what country are you in. it looks like an old movie set
Hey man did you ever find out why it was deserted?
this city is for sale?
This place looks like the True Detective season 1 setting
Seminoles should claim their land back if they're not using it
it looks like an abandoned Military base. Where in Florida is this?
I agree
looks like something you'd find off the interstate... around marsh and whatnot
Oh and you're right on the dime, it's right off the highway.
I was going to say it could be the remnants of rosewood. but the construction is too modern for that time.
Great video!! I'd expect the grass to be longer around the buildings, it doesn't look like it's been empty too long
+Ava Shalom I agree, looks like its only been abandoned for a short time.
Could it be military housing?
+Jennifer Smith Military base out in the middle of the Everglades? Could be!
Why did people leave town?
I'm going this weekend to visit this place.. I'm familiar with 31.. but this place is completely desereted? no activity?
how was it? did you make it out there?
how was it? did you make it out there?
this is very cool. what part of florida?
+becca mock Central Florida
G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital aka Carlstrom Field aka DeSoto County Juvenile Correctional Institute US 31 Arcadia, Fl
This
area was once known as Carlstrom Field, and it was established in 1917
to train military pilots for World War I. The airfield facilities
consisted of a total of 90 buildings & structures. After World War
I, Carlstrom Field was placed in an inactive status in 1922, and all of
the buildings were sold to private individuals & removed by 1926.
With
the onset of World War II, the Carlstrom Field location was chosen to
be the site for a contract flying training school for Royal Air Force
aviators, run by the Embry Riddle Academy. A new facility was built
adjacent to the remains of the WW I-era facilities, and it was dedicated
in 1941.
Carlstrom Field turned out the last of its
cadets in 1945, and it closed later that year. Both Carlstrom & Dorr
Fields were sold to the State of Florida for a total of $1. The complex
was converted into a mental health facility named the G. Pierce Wood
Memorial Hospital. In 2002, the mental hospital closed, but it soon
became the Desoto County Juvenile Correctional Complex. Categories:
youth detention center which closed in 2011.
Postwar use[edit]
Closed after the war, Carlstrom Field became the site of the G.
Why do you keep history, just tell people where it is
Because retards will ruin it. What do you see in most abandoned places that are known? Vandalism & graffiti everywhere.
where in Florida?
Read thru the comments
Looks like an abandoned military base. Looked like military housing
It was way back when, and then became a state mental facility......then became a Juvenile detention center......and closed......all due to funding.....or lack of. This is in Arcadia Fl off Hwy 31
Actually it was a Juvy and a mental hospital, both of my grandmothers worked at the hospital. Pretty creepy though can't deny it. There's a pasture right behind it which is next to my grandfathers house and we used to ride horses to it. Arcadia is a small down man. We're getting a Publix and that's a huge step for us. so why not just say where its at?
what's the background song called, very cool place indeed
I didn't give it a title when I wrote it. Written mostly with NI Komplete 8 Ultimate
+Anomalous Films that's some damn good music, kinda gave me chills lol
Thanks man, I really appreciate that!
How do I pm you about entry?
+bryan whitney This place has been bought and is now heavily secured
It was recently bought and turned into a race track and resort for automotive enthusiasts.
uhh link?
No it wasn't. It actually looks exactly the same today.
Sweet T drove by yesterday and it looked exactly the same.
Where in FL is this?
Northern Florida?
Couldn't have been abandoned too long, the grass in the yards is still short. That or the state dept mowed it regularly. Either way, great find!
Thanks!
it is an air base later mental hospital, and most recently a juvenile detention facility. state mowed it cared after it regularly. it was just bought last year and likely will be torn down and converted into something else.
+Parsec Media Thank You!
Do you plan on finding out what happened, why everybody left?
+Kim Black I'd like to
Carlstorm field...it's creepy what happened there
What happened there?
Yes what happened!!
Carlstrom Field ... But A+ for being right anyway. I should have paid attention to you the first time ... but the Google Earth Aerial (Satellite) imagery didn't seem to match the video ... not until I got led back there again and matched up the water tower and bright orange roof building.
omg gosh when you were walking I saw a ghost in a house looking at you 😨😨😨😨😱😱😱😵
it kinda looks like a move/tv set
Also is this a filter or a bad Camera?
