Is a calorie for me the same as a calorie for you? I don't mean that in the literal sense - a calorie is a calorie just as much as a meter is a meter.
What I mean by that question is, if we both ate the same exact cut of steak - would my body absorb the same amount of calories as yours?

@@deirdremorris9234 Thanks Deirdre! I started by giving up ALL refined carbs and sugars. And increased my natural fats like nuts, avacados, butter, full fat cheeses, meats, eggs, I use heavy cream in my coffee etc. I started feeling better in a few days! Then after a couple of weeks of becoming "fat adapted" ( when your body learns to use fat for energy), I started skipping breakfast. No problem 👍. Then skipped lunch and went to one meal a day (OMAD). It wasn't a problem because when I wasn't eating, my body was using my own stored fat (body fat) to feed itself for energy. The weight just fell off. Turns out, our body fat is very nutritious and has everything thing we need. It's what our bodies are designed to do. Use up stored food when you don't eat! Perfect! Then I was feeling so good that I upped it to eating once a day for four days, then skipped the fifth day entirely (a 48hr fast). I felt great! No problem. It's been the easiest weight loss for me ever. I get how it works now and it's amazing. So now I'm still eating OMAD. When I eat, I eat well. I usually start with a handful of healthy nuts, then a mug of my homemade soup or a salad with homemade dressing, then meat with steamed veggies with butter, a square of good cheese, maybe a bit of kimchi or sour kraut etc. and I eat until I'm full, not stuffed.
Last year I did my first and only so far, three day fast b for Easter and broke my fast with our Easter meal. I'm going to do it again this year and every year from now on. Fasting is so good for us!
Please read Dr. Fung's book The Obesity Code. It changed my life and he explains everything so well. I remember thinking "No wonder!". Also watch his interviews and lectures on UA-cam. It's a wealth of information. Thanks again and be well! 🙏😊

I've also had amazing results with fasting!
Some of the many benefits of fasting and a lower carb whole food diet on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue ua-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/v-deo.html
Does the body prefernetially prefer glucose as a fuel? No, it never uses mainly glucose for fuel and using glucose for fuel is very biochemically damaging! ua-cam.com/video/Nf1jwMbvNxw/v-deo.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! ua-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/v-deo.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: ua-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/v-deo.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! ua-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/v-deo.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical regulator of BDNF production is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
      What breaks a fast? ua-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/v-deo.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it and builds muscle!
      ua-cam.com/video/fJUDucBWv4s/v-deo.html
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

I can only relate to my own experience in dieting. Most often you lose the weight and than when you have reached your goal, you begin to reward your self with the foods you missed while dieting. Soon after you fall out of those good habits that led to the weight loss and fall back into your old practices. That's the reality. The key is to stick with what led to the weight loss, period. Whether that's keto, intermittent fasting or both. I'm not a scientist and I don't dispute what Dr. Fung is saying. I'm just making an observation about human nature.

One down, five to go. I now subscribe to your site. My personal history is a complete validation of this approach to obesity management. I've lost 155 pounds (from 300 to 145) using intermittent fasting and a high-fat regimen. I've maintained my normal weight for several years. I do workout six-days-a-week doing weight-resistance but I also did that amount of exercise when I was morbidly obese. I exercise because I enjoy it.You should see the looks I get when people see me buying pork belly. Uncured bacon that has gone to heaven.

EL there a few different protocols for maintaining weight. Many people do keep a high fat low carb diet because of other benefits. Other people propose eat "normal" but keep intermittent fasting, either 8/16 or one or two days per week.

29:01 describes exactly my struggle with weight loss. I started my weight loss journey when i was 59 kilograms in 2013 because I gained a lot of weight when I started my desk job. After few months of dieting and exercise I came back to 52 kg but only to gain 10 kg in next 6 months . Hence my frustrating journey begins... I reduced my calories even more and lost few kg again only to be beaten by my body. I gained all the lost weight back plus a few kgs . This cycle happened for at least 8-9 times since 2013 and now I weigh 76 kg.. almost 16 kg heavier than my starting weight. I was recently been told by my doctor that I am prediabetic and have high insulin levels in fasted state. I tried everything and I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong. Thanks to Dr Jason Fung, now I understand the basic physiology and I hope I can break free from this vicious weight loss cycle

@@mharrison1325 Dear Mike I started trying intermittent fasting since August 2020 and I did too much too soon. I started with 18:6 in the beginning without properly acclimatising my body to the routine. I couldn’t keep up with that, the new sensations my body was going through. Although after a month I had to quit fasting as I was going through a medical treatment. I picked up IF again in 2021 but this time I started with 12 hours fast and then progressed to 16 and now I am at 18 hours fast. I have lost only 4 kilograms since then but I am patient. I feel so much better that I don’t have much cravings now and feel less bloated. Now I do not think about food all the time and surprisingly I have better energy levels. I feel I have finally found something that I can actually stick with and I hope weight loss and better health will follow if i continue.

How have you been doing lately? I see that you answered someone 5 months ago. I can tell you what works well for me. I try to do 16 hours, 18 hours fasting each day. When I'm hungry I have a fairly big meal but it's a healthy one.
I have half of an avocado sliced up cut into cubes with lemon juice and salt. I have two eggs, cooked in butter and I saute some vegetables in butter. Usually 3 to 4 oz of cherry tomatoes and some spinach but really anything that you like. I add about an ounce of cheese to the omelet or to the scrambled eggs, I serve them with the buttery delicious tomatoes and spinach. Picture a plate with an omelet and tomatoes and spinach on top of it with a little bit of grated Parmesan on top. The half avocado in a small bowl with lemon and salt and I bake almond flour and seed crackers. They scratch the itch for bread, with almost no carbs. This meal comes to about 800 calories and 2/3 of those calories come from fat. It's about 7/8 of an ounce of butter, an ounce of cheese, two eggs, 4 oz of tomatoes and an ounce of spinach. I have two or three tablespoons of heavy cream in my coffee and with the coffee it comes to just about a thousand calories.
That's my big meal. I don't feel like eating for hours after that. If I really want something sweet I have some Godiva dark chocolate, the mini bars. They are smooth and creamy and they don't taste like they're dark chocolate, they're not bitter. They satisfy the need or desire for something sweet with my coffee. I don't have them everyday, but I do sometimes.
When I'm cooking for others and I need to make a dessert I'll make a dark chocolate mousse or creme brulee since they have minimal sugar and lots of fat. Of course they are calorically dense so I don't have it often but when I do I don't feel guilty about it and I enjoy it.
When I have a second meal it's usually smaller. 3 or 4 oz of wild caught salmon and some green beans that I roast in the oven with balsamic vinegar and olive oil until they're just about to be crisp. They taste really good that way. Or brussel sprouts done the same way, olive oil and balsamic vinegar or olive oil and salt with a scant tablespoon of maple syrup on the whole amount of it at the end so you get about a quarter tablespoon of maple syrup per serving. Or 3 oz of steak, or if I didn't have eggs that day, I'll have eggs. It's important to get pasture raised eggs, not conventional eggs. The pasture raised eggs have more omega-3, more vitamin A and vitamin D. And they are cruelty free which is also important.
I am just about to go under 200 lb for the first time in, 20 years? 25 years? And I feel better than I have in a very long time. I don't feel like I'm starving or hungry or like I'm deprived.
Please update on your progress, I hope you have been doing well and are feeling better.

Pictures and movies? So do you see fat people in the movies today? Same is with pictures, people always had standards, doesnt mean everybody was fitting them, it just means that whoever fit the standard got to be popular. In any case, as someone who was born in the 80s and in a communist country, I can tell you we had 0 fast food restaurants back then, a bottle of Coca Cola was how people celebrated Christmas if they were lucky to find one that year. Even earlier on, the population of Europe at least was recovering after world wars. Today, all guilty pleasures are at arm's length and when you buy a box of chocolates you don't look at the money anymore, as they are ridiculously cheap, but at the price you pay by the weight you gain.

I have struggled with obesity and an extremely unhealthy relationship with food...recently a relative reported he lost over 40 pounds with intermittent fasting, a ketogenic diet, and exercise...he was really excited, said he feels great and the weight is literally falling off...I lost over 100 pounds in 2013 in a pretty unhealthy way, so over the last few years I have sat depressed on the couch as the weight just came and came. I hadn't changed any habits and of course I exercised horribly infrequently if at all. I sank deeper into a completely dark depression. I knew I was not disciplined enough to ever successfully take the weight off. I couldn't look in the mirror or let any pics of me as I just couldnt face the reality I had created for myself. So of course when my cousin spoke so highly of this IF diet, I had to check it out. Long story short, the first video that came up in UA-cam was Dr. Fung's...after the first video I was convinced this deserved some looking into, after 10 of them I was pretty obsessed and extremely fired up. I haven't watched all of his videos but they are what intrigued me to really look into this completely different type of lifestyle than I had ever known, I was positive that this was finally a program I could be successful in. I could ffinally change my life. No looking back since, I fast for 36 hrs then allow myself 1500 calories over the next 12 hours and so on. I know it seems aggressive but I have 100 pounds to lose. So far i feel better everyday, physically and emotionally. I am finding that some days I am not hungry enough to even eat my allotted portions. TONS of water is super important and you either need to add some sea or Himalayan pink salt to your water or but an electrolyte supplement to replace your sodium, potassium, and magnesium. This along with plenty of water should decrease your chance of getting the "flu" during the first couple of weeks as your body adjusts. I am so stoked, I tell everyone I meet. It isnt for everybody but if it can get me to happily give up my beloved IPA and the thought of fast food makes me wonky. This is not just a diet, it is a complete change of your lifestyle. I have 80 pounds to go but I feel so good I dont really care. If you stick to the "rules" you will see what I mean. Best of luck on your endeavours

Steve , yes it is slightly more complicated - hence keep away from insulin spiking foods that cause fat storage e.g simple quick absorbed carbs which keep you hungry

I always enjoy your presentations packed with studies, data, and hypotheses, analyses. Discovered you as I was looking for an answer for a friend, with diabetesT2 for years, & on 15 drugs. I bought him things that I thought would help and definitely needed (like a glucose meter, jabbers, and strips, in case he did what I suggested...time restricted eating, or intermittent fasting). I did what I suggested he do, even though I'm not DT2. I lost 25 lbs in about 2 months EASY! I pretty much do IF approx 12-16 every day. And I'm about the same. I don't have cravings, I don't self-prohibit anything, but I focus on nearly complete vegan diet, and when others offer things I normally don't eat, I eat those things, thankful for their graciousness and generosity. Then I go back to eating what I choose. There are many ways to fast, and so many more reasons to do it. So just decide to give it a go. Any day you try is a good day. Fail? Only when you don't try it again. Thanks Dr Fung, for initially asking the important questions for yourself to REALLY HELP your patients...and the world, including me. I'm indebted, and trying to pass it on. Just do it people; everything to gain (but weight, haha).

I'm on day 10 of 17:7, no hunger pangs this AM/high energy/clearer mind than I've had in years, I think I'm doing it right. Want to understand this better and share it to help people win this battle with junk food, weight, mental fog. Watching this awesome lecture for the second time in 3 days to try and catch it all, here are my notes and takeaways, help me refine this to understand better if I'm off. Diets of the past haven't worked. Tests have been done showing calorie in/out and deficits are a real thing but aren't the key to understanding obesity/weight, exercise isn't the best weight loss tool although it's important for general health. Coal factory and manager was a solid illustration, I like that. Firehose is on full when we get to the insulin and cortisol section and I think this is the most important piece. Insulin/cortisol problems cause obesity and even extreme weight loss. Body is a t-stat, set point is important. Keto diets are real (can I just clean up my diet, get rid of 90% of the sugary junk food and still experience significant health and weight management benefits?) Looking forward to the test of this series and will be buying the book.
