NATO's Lithuanian border with Russia where Ukraine war Z sign taunts West
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- EVERY morning the residents of this tiny border town wake up to the chilling knowledge that they are separated from Russia by just a 200-metre bridge.
They live in fear as a giant painted "Z" - the symbol of Vladimir Putin's twisted war in Ukraine - leers at them from across the Nemunas River.
And they tremble at the thought that one day their bridge will see tanks and soldiers streaming across - just like what happened last year in Ukraine.
It is by strange quirks of geography and diplomacy as they find themselves a stone's throw with Russia's Kaliningrad.
Kaliningrad is an isolated stretch of land cut off from Russia and left sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania.
The region is heavily militarised, at its peak being home to more than 200,000 Russian soldiers.
And so The Sun Online headed to the Lithuanian border town of Panemune - which has a population of less than 200.

@abhisheksankarj7763 that's what basic economics tells you. A country with the gdp of a single US state cannot keep up. The ruble is getting destroyed again to make things even more difficult. Of course poor countries like India and NK will still trade with them, but they cannot bail putin out. I don't think you grasp how poor countries like these are compared to the west. @@KazeHorseaking land back from Russia based on old maps doesn't legitimize putin's land grab. The invasion was not justified when it occurred, therefore, no response from Ukraine could possibly justify it retroactively.
The point is simply this: if the orcs can bring up an old map and say that it's their land originally, we disagree and fight back. However, if it really is the orc's belief that you should return land, then they should set the example and give Germany back to Germany.
@@no-sway3709 no offence mate but even with Olympic level mental gymnastics, that point makes no sense.

The city Sovetsk on the Neman (Memel) River at 1:00 historically is Tilsit, famous for its cheese, and for the Treaty of Tilsit signed by Napoleon. It's a shame that russians have wiped out the people of Tilsit. The bridge between Lithuania and Tilsit is the Queen Louise bridge.
Silly part is, there are more Ukrainians there than Lithuanians in that city. In any case, Tilsit was pretty much depopulated as a result of WW2(59k in 1939, 6.5k in 1946), and since it was given to RSFSR, thats the primary source of the repopulation of the city. Northeastern Europe is a very valuable region of Europe. Although they are part of the west, it’s in Western Europes best interest to keep this region a secure and wealthy place
Why is it valuable?
To have baltic sea under NATO control. The Baltic states unfortunelly are too small and to weak to exist there while being neutral. They have only 2 options: to be with us or to be against us
I guess they had no problem to make the right and obvious choice. Also from the NATO point of view - what is better for NATO : having ths baltic states with us or against us? Once more the choice is obvious. Basically creating NATO was to give the smaller and weaker countries of Europe an opportunity to defend themselves from any USSR, now Russia's agression which obviously those countries would not achieve alone. Anyone wonder why all those countries want to join NATO?
Unfortunelly Ukrainians comes a bit too late with this decision and now they have to suffer. I guess that few years after the fall of ussr was the very best time for them to make it easily.
