  • I was off on vacation in Devon, when I noticed that my previous philosophy video went viral. This gave me motivation to up the quality of my content. It also encouraged me to continue my 'countryside travel' series with a segment on the surrounding countryside of Devon.
I stayed around Torbay and Exeter. This video was shot in the military museum in Brixham, which is in Torbay. I do not recall the veterans name as this was a very brief encounter and we were parted because of the closing time, but he fascinated me with his regional knowledge on the war. I have more footage in which he describes the battery war plans put by Churchill and the layout of the areas defenses. He was a Captain after all. He also gave me permission to post this video online as he worked in the education division of the British army, so he was accustomed to always seeing lots of faces.
My girlfriend is also listening to him on the side. It makes it even funnier since it seemed all the Western allies were in one room (France, US and the UK). You can't see my friend to the left but he lives in the area and was showing us around.
And for those wondering, I believe he was 11 when he was shot at by the German plane. This would have been around late 1941.
I am quite thankful for this opportunity and hope you all enjoy his precious anecdote of the war.

And if you are wondering about my odd home guard comment. It is because in a previous video, he explained to me how the regular army was withdrawn from the coastal defense to be put to use elsewhere. As a replacement, the British army left older aged soldiers (50+) who were no longer eligible to serve in combat and home guard units to cover other shifts.

wow gem of an interview! Agree it's an awesome idea to make a collection of these interviews with people that lived history themselves...they're historical record like no other. COngrats again. Brilliant.

Lucky to bump into this guy. Knew his stuff. So often war stories are, let's say... modified over the years, but he sounded legit

well he was a child when this occurred so it would have had a profound impact on his psyche and development.
