What I do is using af/ae lock button to lock focus while panning. I keep the bottom pressed all the time to avoid focus hunting, and just release the button when I want to change the focus point.
That is really good tip, thanks for sharing!
Can you explain more ? you keep bottom "af/ae lock" when you panning ?
If you use "auto-focus single" and press the shutter half way down to refocus it works pretty good with 1 area and a small focus box. Of course it depends on the situation. People complain about the auto focus of Panasonic a lot but you just have to know the camera and how to use it and it's really not as bad as it's made out to be.
I agree with that, it is usable but certainly not as flawless as hybrid / phase detection AF systems.
Thank you for watching!
@@TheHybridShooter I had this feature also on my C2 settings. I had to reset it, now the autofocus works normally but I can't use the half way shutter button to set focus? What setting do I need to enable for that
@@TheHybridShooter You can also use focus lock, so the procedure is as follows: 1) Set a small square for Single Autofocus. 2) Start shooting with subject at the centre of the focus square. 3) Either use the touch screen to focus or use a dedicated Fn button to do the same thing 4) Now press focus lock. When changing to another object move the camera while Unlocking focus. Now press single autofocus again, then re-press your focus lock button. It sounds complicated but with practice you get used to it and it is quick.
people complain because even when you know it well and then try Sony's AF you feel the difference
On the G85, you access the AF Mode by pressing the Q Menu (Quick Menu) and then pressing
during autofocus of 4k video, the image shakes violently. there is no such problem in 1080p. this makes it very difficult to shoot reviews against the background of static objects, the background will shake violently with autofocus
I have talked about that in the video.
Surely one of the most real world and useful examples and advice videos you could find anywhere! Thanks for sharing.
For unmoving or same-distance-moving object, Just focus on what you want to focus by face detect or press on screen, then you either
a) press AF lock, or
b) switch to MF (better option)
Then, the focus will be perfectly locked.. it is fine, although not so convenient..
For randomly moving subject, then its a challenge.. tracking or one area would help..
If you follow a object or filming things in close up you can also stay in manual mode en just tab the touch screen to autofocus it's really useful especially on a gimbal.
That's right, also a good technique, thank you for commenting!
I just put the Autofocus sensitivity to +2, now the autofocus works according my desired pace. thank you for the video man!
You're welcome, glad that it was helpful.
Im looking for an answer to my little problem: my autofocus works and is nice centerd on my C1 custom setting (24 fps), but on my C2 (a 60 fps custom) it jumps to the right down corner and only focusses when I use the touch screen to tell it where to focus or use the half way shutter button. I just want it to do its autofocus and start nicely in the middle just like my C1 setting. It is probably one simple setting change buy yh. Looks like my C2 setting is on manual focus? I dont know please help
That is probably because you saved C2 setting with focus point in the corner.
@@TheHybridShooter Lol it worked. Thank you. Little things like that I need to learn ...
Great work again. I'd love to see a video on how you get the look off your videos, especially the colours, but also the overall look. Maybe you've done something like that in the past - if so, I missed it! Cheers.
+Loose EndsThanks, I will make a video about that in the future, a lot people are asking about that.
Can we fix this autofocus lag with installing new firmware ?
no.
i just buy this camera recently. but i'm struggling with the autofocus. how do i turn the autofocus on?touch the screen to focus didn't work. i choose mode afc but that didn't work. i need the autofocus work without touching the screen. is it possible?
Check the switch on the lens, and turn on Continuous AF setting in video menu.
you showed how to find the settings for 'AF sensitivity' in the menu but not to find them for 'AF Mode'. Just an inconsistency. I'm an absolute novice. sorry
How do I get to the AF Mode menu??
I have 12-35mm 2.8 and was really upset with autofocus in 4K. I tried 1080/50p even without bumping up shutter speed. Autofocus did worked so much better. But 50p cuts down on bitrate so I tried 1080/25p with 1/50 shutter speed - same results. Really good. Therefore I suggest simply use 1080 for autofocus to work.
Yes, that is a well known solution, but switching to 1080p just to get better AF is a pretty horrible compromise by 2024 standards.
@@TheHybridShooter GX85 is a compromise itself in 2024. But if anyone still uses it for video like me, they can go for 1080 only when they need AFC. 4K for other shots.
Thanks for this video! Exactly what I was looking for. Love my G80, love it so much I'm selling it and moving up to GH5.
You're welcome, thank you for watching and enjoy shooting with GH5!
Which one is better gh5 or g85?
Another awesome video man. Thanks!
Thanks, I'm glad that you like it!
I tried using constant Auto focus in my recent video and never again. Manual focus seems to be the best reliable way for vlog style videos at least
I have the G7 and the focus system does need improvement, especially when filming at 4k. My view is that the processor is not strong enough to handle the large files and the contrast system inferior to Sony's and Canon's system.
But, I was filming a small music concert, outdoors, evening time, under artificial lighting, at 60fps/IA and the focus worked pretty good. I really should have turned on the tracking to test how it followed the led singer and I should have tested it using each of the PASM settings. Maybe I'll go back tonight.
It is unclear whether the focusing problems are caused by focusing system or lack of computing power, focusing actually works well in stills, but in video not even GH5 can focus 100% reliably and that is a best...
Thank you for watching!
The quality is really stepping up man ! Love it !
Thank you, I'm glad that you like it!
Another awesome video. Hopefully Panasonic will realize after hundreds of videos as that countrast based autofocus is not the best solution. However it seems they are pretty stubbornly stuck to it.
Thanks, they have confirmed that they are sticking with contrast AF and that have no intention to use phase detection AF, let's just hope that they will come up with some solution for contrast AF.
Thank you for watching!
why in the world are m43 cameras stuck commuting to contrast?
The Hybrid Shooter. That's ashame. I thought I heard that as well. My hopes are not high. Great camera otherwise, and fortunately I am usually not moving around and can use manual focus.
Panasonic - switch focus systems
Sony - make camera's with a flip out screen
Canon - make a reasonably priced 4k camera
Alex Jobe What do you mean by m43?
Actually, after making this video, I feel like the AF is not so terrible if you help the camera a bit. Sadly, every manufacturer has some major issues to solve.
Recomendación entre lumix g85 vs sony a6300
Thank you for your videos on the G85! I bought it based on your reviews. I’m a car Vlogger shooting in 4K with the kit lens. I’m extremely happy with it except for focusing during B roll shots of a Car the autofocus is not good and hunts for no reason. Would a 7-14 or 12-60 lens solve the problem? Or should I lock the focus and continue with the Kit lens? Thanks!
12-60 won't be any better, with 7-14 everything is mostly in focus all the time because of that wide angle, so AF is usually not a problem, but ultra-wide angle is not suitable for shooting everything, so that depends on your style. You can also set AF lock on AF-L button and hold that button down when you don't want the camera to refocus.
Thank you very much!
Yeah, I wish Panasonic point focus was actually that. I tried it for webcam mode, but even when my face was still covering the center, the camera wanted to focus on the background. Gonna use 49 or face recognition next time. (The latter sounds like ideal for webcam style.) In 1-point, the rule should be: When in doubt, focus on dead center and nothing else.
Thank you for the video. I have a quick question. Is autofocus on G85 good and stable enough to film 4k for interviews?
You’re welcome! No, it isn’t really good for anything by today’s standards.
Does firmware improve this situation? Lot of camera use contrast for video so that's not the real problem, sometimes it stop trying to focus againg, same on my G7. What's the last firmware available? Maybe the kit lenses are too "dark" and slow?
Panasonic seems to quit support too early for its cameras (just a year after camera release for firmware update), not just like Olympus or Fuji.
Unfortunately there was no firmware released to improve this, the processing power of G85 / G80 is just not sufficient. Panasonic is releasing a lot of FW updates but mostly for their top line cameras (just like Fuji an Olympus).
@@TheHybridShooter so bad. So also expensive Leica lens will be not enough for a solid Autofocus?
I didn't find sensitivity settings in the G7 menu but I did a quick test just now and tracking seems to work best for me.
The thing with using this camera is you have to learn what works for contrast based af then it's really not bad.
Yes, that's right, if you know how to use it, it can do good job.
Great video... Great work... Love the colour grading
Thank you!
Hello! Thank you very much for the video review. 1. Tell me please, gh5 has better autofocus than this g85 camera? Or the same? 2. How can I achieve continuous video recording in 2 hours? I guess there is not enough battery. Can I simultaneously shoot and somehow recharge the camera? From a powerbank or from an electrical outlet? 2. Is there a video duration limit of 29 or 30 minutes? If so, how can you remove this restriction? In the service mode, the installation of a program or it can be a flashing. I really need to shoot 2 hours without interrupting.
GH5 autofocus is a bit better, but still unreliable and unpredictable. G85 does not have recording limit, G80 and G81 has 30 min. recording and it cannot be removed.
You can shoot for unlimited amount with G85 of time using this: www.amazon.com/Gonine-DMW-BLC12-Replacement-PANASONIC-DMC-FZ200/dp/B01D69P0UG/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=ths092-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=f20c98c47c9e39a650b8008553ea7b25&creativeASIN=B01D69P0UG
The Hybrid Shooter And for the g80 after 30 minutes of video recording, does the recording resume automatically or do I need to press the record button again for continue the video shooting?
You need to press button again.
Thanks for this. I am about to buy a G80 beside GH5 for streaming with Atem. So is streaming possible without recording longer than 30min?? Thanks for the tip.
@@JuusoHoo I think it is possible
This is utterly brilliant and on the money. Thank you. I took a Panasonic GX80 on my first shoot this week. I struggled to find the best workflow/combination using a mixture of autofocus and manual focus.
Thank you, it requires a bit of practice, but it is usable.
I am on the brink of swapping my GX80 for a G80 - before I take the plunge, do you know if there is a better sub $1000 camera for video which has the following features - DECENT autofocus, stabilization, a mic socket, and an articulating screen. Thanks, mate
I don´t know know about any camera with those futures under $1 000 apart of G85, although I don't know whether I can call G85's autofocus decent.
Canon m6 worth it for you tube vids? Though it doesn't have 4K....
I would say no, it is decent camera but it has no IS and no 4K, video quality isn't particularly impressive and I would generally prefer Sony A5100 in that category.
Which camera do you like most a6500 or g85? Really useful video btw!
Thank you, at the moment probably A6500.
Great video. I can't decide which model to choose for the same price Omd Em 5 ii with 14-150 kit lens or Lumix G85 with the 12-60 kit. What do you recommend to me as the first real camera. Thanks
Just one question, instead of one area why not use the pin point focus mode which in the last option in the focussing modes. How different is pin point focussing, how better or worse is it and for professional shoots of portraits will it better especially when focussing on one eye. Thanks for the tips.
Honestly, I don't remember, on the G9 it always used pop-up magnification of the focus point which was very annoying.
Hey, this might be a silly question but this problem would totally not matter if I decided to use manual focus right? I am new to cameras.
Thanks to whoever answers this!
Yes, if you use manual focus, you don't need to care about auto focus. You just need lens that is suitable for manual focusing it terms of focusing ring smoothness and travel.
very helpful video..recently purchased g85 but am disappointed with the video aspect..the jitter and judder when panning(even very slowly) is awful..what setting should I be using on PAL system in australia
There is sepcial IS mode for panning on G85, use that.
Beautifully colored video too!
Thank you!
What's the best setting to record a flight landing/ taking off or a kid constantly moving. I find the lumix 12-60 kit crap for panning and tilting.
Probably the 1-area and +2 speed, but you probably need different camera for that.
If i take a Video with the G81... everything is ok. But if i just want to autofocus during a time where i dont take a video it dont work...what i have to do to change that
Thank you for your video.
Today I bought the camera (g85), I think I will visit your channel often for information.
You're welcome, G85 is a good choice overall.
Actually I'm still confused between a6500 and g85.
If each price are the same, which one is better?
If price is the same I would get A6500.
I select G85 because of free angle LCD.
If A6500 has a free angle LCD, it would be perfect.
Thank you for your comments.
Hi, great video. I'm wonder if you could use G85 for real estate videos - eg. going in and out different rooms-bedrooms, bathroom, living room, etc.. maybe in 60fps to make it slow motion, with this in body stabilization even handheld.. but what with the focus of this camera - from this what you are saying autofocus would probably doesn't work during the walking Movement and changing environments like a rooms?
What if AF would be switched off -and you could not pinpoint focus on camera screen, would the videos be still professional looking with decent sharpens of everything in the rooms or the video will get muddy and blurry and no client will accept this kind of service and video?
That is very difficult to answer, because it depends on specific situation and what is acceptable for you... AF is generally usable in 1080p but it is still not great.
Is there any update on g85 fireware just like the new one on gh5 ?
There were two updates, current FW is 1.2 but it just fixes bugs and add lens compatibility. no new futures were added and AF wasn't improved.
Hey! Did you shoot this in 4k or 1080p? :) Heard its faster in 1080, is this true?
It is shot in 4K and yes, it is faster in 1080p.
Thank you! Can it match the gh5 in AF speed in 1080p as well as quality?
No, GH5, GH5S and G9 are much better in terms of the AF.
Does the lens motor make any noise during video?
Great review! Thank you for the helpful tips!!! 😁👍🏽
You're welcome!
Hey sorry for the dumb questions but im new, i was wondering how to access the area-1 Af function you showed in the video? Im having a hard time accessing thia feature and woild be really greatful if you could give me a pointer! Thanks hope 2 hear back
Just press the left arrow on 4-way pad and should be available.
Can i change focus ring speed for manual focus? I don't like to turn it to long distance.
No, you can't.
Hi. Is there a lens for this camera that has built in AF which would be good for vlogging??
No, that depends much more on the camera.
Excellent video. It helped a lot.
Thank you!
Hello! It is very important for me. Compatible Lumix G80 / 81/85 and Speedbuster Commlite CM-AEF-MFT?
I unforrtunately don't know, I don't use speedboosters.
Hey just got a quick question - how exactly do you lock the exposure in video mode with the G85? :)
By using manual setting or holding AF-L button.
Fantastic! Thank you! What settings would you use for subject moving towards camera, such as a bride walking down the aisle?
I would definitely use different camera for that.
@@TheHybridShooter which camera would you recommend for needing good in low light and good focus for tracking shots focus pulls and push ins ect ? Im really torn between the g85 or sony a6400
@@jro713 Sony A6400
cool channel cool reviews i wonder if an expensive lens would help with autofocus
Thank you, no lenses won't help.
Greatvideo!! do you have any suggestions how to connect to live stream with this camera? Thanks
Thank you, Elgato Cam Link works well for that.
@@TheHybridShooter any specific model? and do you think camera will handle this well?
Bro what do u think about Lumix g85 and canon m50? Who is better..please I need your opinion 🙏🙏🙏🙏
G85 is much better.
@TheHybridShooter oh why is that? please give your reasons, I am considering buying one of them 🙏🙏
Autofocus in 4k mode is very slow and inaccurate. The situation improves when iA + is enabled. I do not know why that is so, autofocus works much faster.
Should I get this for walking scenery videos? Or maybe wait for a better camera or maybe get an action cam. I'm not sure what to get since I haven't bought a proper video camera before
That depends on what are your requirements.
@@TheHybridShooter I don't think I'll be shooting closeups maybe using a wide angle lens. Occasionally zooming in on animals and such, mostly not the the point they occupy the full frame. Even if I shoot people I want it in a way the background scenery comes in too.
It is mostly suitable for that, take a look at my full review: bit.ly/g851year
excuse me,I used my g85 AF-C to record video ,but the focus always repeat focus ,how to get better thank you!
Besides what is shown in this video, there is not much that you can do about it.
Hi could u do video for getting right setting to get natural skin color. I m not getting proper skin color in my g85 .. i even set my white balance with grey card still i get yellowish skin color in artificial light
I will make general color grading tutorial in the future, where I will explain how to do that.

Awesome. Thank You.
You're welcome!
Do auto focus work shooting 4k?
yes
has there been update in firmware to help this focus issue after a year? love all the features it has but the AF is kinda of a deal breaker for me...unless that is fixed?
Unfortunately, no. Only GH5 and G9 have been updated.
do you know if there will be update in future or they expect consumer to upgrade to later version? thank you
I don't know, top line - G9, GH5 and GH5S will be updated, but I'm not sure about G85.
Which one between G85 VS A6300 for mixed video/photo use ?
Take a look at my comparison video: bit.ly/a6500vsg85
Okay, thanks!
Hi Hybrid Shooter, do you think this tutorial can be applied to the GH5? Cheers
GH5 has much better AF than G85, especially with latest FW. The basics of using DFD are still similar, GH5 will just work much better.
Thanks for your help!
You're welcome!
I don't know if you had the chance to see this comparison autofocus test, but weirdly enough the G85 wins against G9, GH5 and GH5s. Maybe is because the test was done with the older firmwares.
What do you think of this? Cheers
ua-cam.com/video/NvkrWGjWY9k/v-deo.html
In my testing Panasonic G85 is nowhere near as good as G9, there is huge difference. I have only tested GH5S with FW 1.1 and that is also miles better than G85.
Which is the perfect gimbal for pansonic g85?
Zhiyun Crane Plus, but it also work for Zhiyun Crane M which is the one I am using, its not perfect, but it works. Zhiyun in my opinion makes the best gimbals
Great work, thanks :-)
Díki Petr!
AF Performance is also markedly better when shooting in 1080p than in 4K.
That is true, but in my experience the same rules apply on 1080p as well, it is just a bit faster.
Thank you for watching!
why is my GX 80 shoots in C mode several pictures in different light shade and I cannot make it shoot single shot?
Because you have turned on bracketing.
@@TheHybridShooter please tell me how can I turn off
I don't have this camera anymore, so I can't navigate you through the menu.
@@TheHybridShooter thx anyway
I can't find these focus options when in movie mode or ia, do you know if that's possible? I assume this is with continuous auto focus. I can't figure out how to lock a single spot with autofocus without continuous autofocus, do you know if that's possible? When I talk in front of a camera and talk it's constantly focusing but if I turn it off it's like impossible to tell if you're in focus or not. haha
You should be able to fined these option in manual movie mode, make sure that continuous AF in motion picture settings is turned on. You can use single autofocus by switching focusing mode to MF on the back of your camera and moving the focus area square on the screen or by taping the AF on the screen in manual focus model
Thanks!
is there similar camera like g85 but has better AF? from image quality , 4k and AF perspeective?
Sony A6500 and A6300 have great AF and even better 4K than the Panasonic, but no fron-facing screen, there is a lot of videos about those on this channel.
the overheating issue is a concern for me
Than you have go with A6500, that doesn't have overheating issues.
with what camera did you shoot the photo from the very first seconds?
+whoonga That was Sony A6500 and Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and MC-11 adapter.
Thanks! What exact lense have u used and what lense can you recommend as an allrounder?
Lens is Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, MC-11 is na adapter. It is optically excellent, it the focal range is sufficient for you, I recommend that lens (if you are asking about sony A6500 lenses).
Yeah, i was asking for Sony a6500 lenses. Thanks again ;)
@ 0.30 SECONDS, how do i go on that screen? I owned a g85.
You can get there by pre pressing left arrow key if you have button functions set to default.
Interesting. Thanks.

Thank you, no, I am in Slovakia, unfortunately I have never been in Israel, but I intend to visit.
How is your overall experience ?
It is positive overall.

hi is the tracking any faster when filming in 1080p
Yes, it is much faster in 1080p.
tnx boss
You're welcome!
Guys I need your help for finding a new camera.
I wanted the Sony a6500 at first but they say the screen is too dimm to see it outside.
I want to make flms with a gimbal, so I need a good autofocus that's why the Panasonic doesn't seem so good. The GH5 is too expensive for me an the Olympus OM d-e M1 Mark 2 would be perfect for me If it wasn't for only 60fps :(.
There are always 1 or 2 must haves for me that the camera doesn't have.
I really want 4k and 120fps. I want to use it outside and I wanna film and take good photos.
Also I can't afford more than around 1000 (used ok) if I wanna get a gimbal.
I'm so frustrated. I want a mirrorless because I don't enjoy taking my big EOS with me all the time.
Are there any other options in this range for my needs?
Most important is the autofocus, 4k, 120fps, good screen and good low light performance and the weight.
Unfortunately there isn't anything that would fulfill your requirements in that price range.
The Hybrid Shooter
Yeah I'm afraid so :(.
Im currently thinking of using a field monitor with a Sony alpha and a gimbal, so I coulf fix the screen problem maybe. But man, it sucks to have to buy so much additional stuff to get an already moderately expensive camera to work properly. I'm not really saving money like that 😅.
Thanks though for the response.
Yes, I'm afraid that the anapest (and also the best) camera that fulfills your requirements it the A7 III.
Nice
Thanks!
Touch focus? that's what I'd use on this camera
Mark Shirley does it help to have god focus ?
after 3 years since this video posted, Panasonic af system is still the slowest in the market..... don't buy any panasonic camera if you need fast video af, especially when vlogging in the street....
Not true, GH5, GH5S and G9 have very good autofocus with current firmwares. Definitely sufficient for vlogging.
The Hybrid Shooter but still not as good as the others , especially Sony and Canon
The Hybrid Shooter I agreed that Panasonic has very good video picture quality and features, even is the best in the market, but not video af speed
G9, GH5 and GH5S are at least as good as Canon M50, probably better.
Maybe there should be a separate video on how to manual focus
I will make that in the future.
Thank you for watching!
The Hybrid Shooter thank you
Good video except one thing. You don't show the menu button on how you got to the screen. The camera has 100 buttons
Some of that footage actually looks like it was taken in Slovakia.
All of it was shot in Slovakia.
@@TheHybridShooter we have such a lovely country, right :)
Whatever you do it might work for 1min of recording then it’s not reliable at all it might record no prob, but on another shot focus can get stuck
Manual way to go on this camera
Yes, that is true, but there are situations, when manual focusing is not possible and not everyone knows how to use manual focusing.
I never hated it until I started taking video and using a gimble. It sucks. Damn. Great video though 👍👍👍
Thank you, AF works well in stills, although for good AF in video, one of the top line cameras (GH5, GH5S, G9) will be more suitable.
Does focus modes like AFC or AFF matter once we start recording ?
Yes
@@TheHybridShooter Ah okay , because I see no difference in the way camera changes its focus in either of the modes ? No matter which mode , the focus seems to change in a similar manner and same rate while the video is being recorded.
@@TheHybridShooter SO I dug deeper & came to conclusion that when recording video , the modes do not matter . Only the continuous AF is the setting which comes into play here. Else when we half press the shutter , the camera gains focus as AFS.
G85 user 💪
this is the most Fuc"d camera I have ever used. In a effort to cram as much as they can in this camera they have made it utterly useless. You never know what focus mode it is in or how to get back to where you want to be. It's in close up mode but is there a simple menu function, dial or button to switch back, I sure as hell don't see one...like EVER other camera I have owned has.
I'm not sure what you mean by that, focusing mode is shown on the display all the time and you can change focusing modes by pressing left arrow button or assign it to any other button. I'm also not aware of any "close up mode" on this camera, haven't you mistaken G85 for some other camera?
Buy a point and shoot
af on this thing is driving me crazy :(
Panasonic Shot with Sony 😜
I love this camera, but it's kinda ridiculous that I need to jump through so many hoops just to get my $1000 camera to almost kinda focus properly.
Unfortunately every camera in that price category has some flaws :(
Thank you for watching!
The 25 mm 1.7 has terrible autofocus....
25mm F1.7 is quite OK, 20mm F1.7 has bad AF.
The Hybrid Shooter reading this conversation, which prime and zoom lenses would you recommend to have best Video AF ?
Glad I got rid of mine.
Shoots the video with the sony, thats all u need to know
Not sure why, I also shoot videos about Sony on Panasonic...
I like g85 with the caveat of bad autofocus, hopefully they fix that on the next iteration. Maybe I'm gonna pass on this one.
That will certainly not be fixed in next generation, it will take a couple of years until they fully develop the technology, but the AF is already improved in G9.
The Hybrid Shooter they should abandon their contrast based af and shift to phase detect autofocus, some kind of canon and sony doing.
They have already said that they are not going to do that. Their DFD technology is getting better and it could be as good as dual pixel on hybrid AF one day, but that will require a lot of fine tuning and processing power upgrade.
You just don’t really get how to use the camera.. the autofocus was focusing on the censor when you said it wasn’t focusing on the camera.. not overly impressed in your lack of observation
Not impressed by comment, you can see in the beginning of that clip that it was shifting focus from camera body to sensor which is why I used manual focusing.
Thank you for watching anyway!
your voices are terrible! i can't hear clearly. please make bass channel down & slowly explain it'll make better.
I'm happy with the sound. Nobody else complained.
