They still have Wonpil on keyboards. If you notice, though, in the M/V, they have _two;_ Junhyeok is the one who left.
And the rapper is Young K, the bassist.
In translating/creating the English version, they do have the advantage that Jae is a native English speaker (he was born in Argentina but grew up in California), and Young K is also fluent; he went to high school in Toronto.
WHen they had Junhyeok, he was the keyboardist and Wonpil was on synthesizer. Nowadays Wonpil does both!
ninetailgumiho I actually miss when junhyeok was in the band, not only for his vocals, but also his keyboard. Idk, listening to their old songs with junhyeok in it just shines the keyboard more, and it sounds more obvious? Don’t get me wrong, wonpil is hella talented for doing both, but I feel like the keyboard was just louder(?) when junhyeok was still in the band
Jae: (glasses/ lead guitar) is American (cali) so hes fluent in both English and Korean, he also has an amazing UA-cam channel called jaesix and just started a podcast called how did I get here
Young K :(bassist) he studied abroad in Canada during high school so hes fluent in English his Instagram is everything I wish mine was lol ( fun fact he graduated from college with a degree in business all while having his busy schedule as an idol )
Sungjin (leader/ rhythm guitar) hes not fluent in English buts he speaks very well and he understands a lot of English, he has the really cool raspy voice, (fun fact jae gave him the nick name Bob the builder cause he thinks he looks like bon the builder so he gets called Bob a lot and this year for their music show performance in halloween he dressed up as Bob the builder)
Wonpil :(keyboard/synth) hes not fluent in english but he always tries really hard to speak it for international fans, his falsetto is heavenly (fun fact:him and jae have the ultimate Tom and jery relationship )
Dowoon: (drummer) he is the youngest and he is not fluent in english but like wonpil he always tries really hard to speak it for international fans and his accent is the cutest, (fun fact: from time to time he will sing a verse in their songs (he is not very confidant in his voice but I think it's really nice)
Honestly I think one good way to learn them and their personalities is either threw interviews (they have done a lot of English speaking g ones since they were on tour recently , their Zach sang show interview is so amazing if you want to learn about how they write their music and generally just more about them as artists, I highly recomend that interview ) or watch jaes UA-cam videos (fun fact jae has a video with woosung/sammy from the rose cause they are friends and it's the best thing ever). Also you should watch their concert performance video for their song emergency for a good laugh and if you want to see them bust out their amazing dance moves

About the rap - apparently this song is Sungjin's (the leader) experience. He n the girl decided to have a cool off period. But he found out later, that she cheated on him at that time. So if u noticed in the rap - it says that 'I'm with Day6 now ..... I'm over you' & that 'My Days have been so good to me, thankfully... ' - that's a low key tribute to My Days, our fandom 😍

The cool thing about our lyrical genius, Young K, is that he doesn't translate the song literally but contextually. U shud dig more into this multi faceted boy. If there's such thing as perfection - this boy is it ☺️
Well actually they used to have 2 keyboardists in the debut era then soon 1 left. Now they still have 1 *keyboardist* - his name is *Wonpil* .
4 out of 5 members except the *drummer* - *Dowoon* are vocalists. Also Dowoon slowly started to sing some short lines now. And well we love it!
The *bassist* , who also wrote a lot of lyrics named *Young K* (can call him Brian) and he speaks English.
The *lead guitarist* - the glasses guy named *Jae* . He's American.
*Leader* and *rhythm guitarist* , also the guy with raspy voice named *Sungjin* (can call him Bob).
An addition: Young K and Jae are the ones rapping in this song, the former is the speak-rapping one.
I just wanna correct you but during debut era, they had one keyboardist. Wonpil was and is a synthesizer. But now he’s both keyboardist and synthesizer

Young K (bassist/rapper) is definitely one of my all time favorite vocals. His voice is so so diverse, he can nail anything from balads to true pop-punk and even jazz (there is a video where they did a cover of something and he did like a "mouth saxophone solo" )...
They don't have a lot of raps in their own songs but he did a few colabs on witch he raps (the one that comes to mind is with jamie on her debut album). Also both he and Jae have ICONIC raps in the jyp special 2018 and you definitely need to watch that because that whole video is pure gold.
Also on the english note... Jae (glasses guy) lived in LA most of his life and Young K lived in Toronto for a while (he was in a band back then and that's how he got into jyp) and is also fluent. Jae still mostly talks to Brian (Young K) in english if it's just the two of them

Wonpil plays keyboard on all of their songs since they've been promoting with 5 members. Also, Young K raps in pretty much every song.

Young K is the bassist and rapper.
Wonpil plays keyboard/synth.
Dowoon is the drummer.
Jae is the guitarist you usually identify by glasses.
Sungjin is the "lead singer"/guitarist.
They're really all singers, though Dowoon is a bit hesitant to sing.

The other members just know the basics like every kpop idol knows
the keyboardist left but his role was taken over by the synthesizer so they still have real keyboard sounds. If you'll notice in the MV there are two who's on keyboards. 😊 Young K (the one who rapped in the vids), the bassist, is really the rapper of the group, although their songs has less rap parts lately.
there are two members who are fluent in english:
Young K - bassist - studied a long time in Canada
Jae - lyric guitar, the one with the glasses - raised and grew up in L.A.
This live studio version was shot right before they went out on their first world tour, after they practiced a lot. They've had their second world tour by now, so you should see them now. They've just been getting better and better. Also, the sampled cymbals in the live version are killing me. Give Dowoon a real kit!

Sungjins main is guitar (mostly acoustic) but also can play piano, he also played bass for i love you part switch version i think, he can also play the cajon.
Dowoon is the drummer but can also play piano
wonpil is the synth/keyboard but can also do guitar
jae our other guitar (mostly electric) can also play the bass, and keyboard
young k the bass can actually just play everything. guitar, synth, drums. he was also the rapper in this mv and hes the rapper in most other songs with a rap except when he doesnt want to and then jae does it
sungjin can play drums too. before day6 was formed, they were 5Live (this is w/o dowoon) he was the drummer

Fun fact, their video for a song released 2 years later called You Were Beautiful has the same actors & same relationship, but its from the girl's perspective, reminiscing on the good memories. Its an incredibly beautiful ballad!

The reason the English version is so good is because Young K (who also wrote the Korean version) is fluent in English, so the song wasn’t translated by a translator, but by the members. And because it’s live. Day6 sounds even better live ( as bands should) Also, how excited are you for the Dreamcatcher comeback next week?!

Personally, I feel that Day6 lives are way better than their recorded versions - with regards to their emotions, ad libs & raw music elements. U really have to catch them live, next time they visit NA.
Young K (aka Brian) was originally the rapper of the band, but as years went by they made him sing more in their songs and I'M SO GLAD THEY DECIDED TO GO THIS WAY. (even tho I still love his rap somehow in these rock songs lol)

After Junhyeok (the original keyboardist) left, Wonpil (originally just synths) took over keyboards and now does both. When they play songs live either they play prerecorded synths and he plays the keys live OR he plays one or the other (usually keys, it depends on the song).
They had two keyboardists in the beginning,Junhyeok and Wonpil (the latter has played synth only when junhyeok was still in the band and playing keyboard). Now Wonpil plays both keys and synth in all songs and it is actually him playing in every song you've listened to except this one
Yay, more Day6! I get what you're saying about the English version, love the lyrics in it. Wonpil plays the keyboard as you noticed, so that's still all them now. Jae and Young K are fluent in English, iirc Jae grew up in Cali and Young K spent a few years in Canada. Side note: Jae has a YT channel (JaeSix) with some hilarious videos on it, they're all like 1-2 years old and they're just random stuff but he's really quite funny. There's also a video on that channel with Woosung/Sammy from The Rose (they're friends) that you might enjoy watching (in your own time or whatever)...Jae even tries to mimic Woosung's vocal style and it's pretty funny. Keep up the awesome work, love your reactions man!

the band was originally Young K vocals/rapper/bassist, Jae vocals/guitarist, SungJin vocals/guitarist, Wonpil vocals/synthesizer, Dowoon drums, and Junhyeok vocals/keyboard. After Junhyeok left Wonpil took over his part and plays keyboard and synth which honestly probably would've been done by one person in the first place if they hadn't had an extra member.
Also Jae is American so he can obviously speak english and Young K learned English from watching Shrek repeatedly

Oh wow what you said about the contrast between the first and second verse's lyrics and instrumentation is actually on point. The first verse is like really reminiscent and emotional because of the break-up, and the second verse is kind of like the "in denial stage" given the sarcastic lyrics and the up-beat-ish tone. That's really interesting. I never thought of it that way thank u!! : D
It's very difficult to translate Korean directly into English. The two languages are utterly different. They created English lyrics that retain the essence the Koren version of the song and also resonate emotionally with English speakers. Judging by your reaction they succeeded brilliantly. Keep in mind that JYP himself spent a lot of time in the US and is fluent in English.

There actually is a keyboardist. He was doing the falsetto in the chorus. His name is Wonpil. And there are two members that can speak English fluently, Jae (the one who started the song) and Young K (the one doing the rap)
Young K lived in Canada for high school and Jae is American. they are the English speakers of Day 6
Oh and if you want to check out how good they are at adapting "Korean-English translation songs" there is the series called Soundtrack it's a 5 ep. series in which Day6 adapt-covered songs like Wonder Girls' Like This, you wouldn't regret checking it.

I also prefer the English video, though I feel like a lot of the Korean lyrics are a little more biting. Especially the last line, which feels in English like he softens at the end, as opposed to Korean where he hardens at the end.

I actually listen to the English version of congratulations way more than the original, the lyrics just hit me better and I prefer the way it sounds. its strange because with most kpop translated to a new language it always sounds of but young K and Jae did really well.

Since you've now reviewed both Congratulations and You Were Beautiful (as of the date I'm watching this 😊) have you ever watched and listen to both, back to back....?
I know people have told you they're linked, but it's amazing how the same story and home video footage you love, is used in both, but gives a totally different feel because of the editing (order it's placed) in the song and how the songs themselves are similar, yet so different.
I'd love to hear what you think... Same base material, two different perspectives in time. CONGRATULATIONS At the point of break up (disintegration), when it's all raw and you're hurt and wanna belt it out of you. And YOU WERE BEAUTIFUL after some time had passed and you are looking back on the relationship, with perspective, and can be thankful for what it gave you, even though it still hurts a bit to remember what you lost. That's the hopeful misery you mentioned 😔🙂
