My dad was my best friend. He died when I was 15, a few months before I discovered Iron & Wine. I always connected deeply with this song. I remember grieving to this many times

The first time I heard this song, I was on a road trip through Idaho with friends and half asleep in the back seat as we drove through the middle of nowhere. Was one of the most peaceful moments.

Every time I hear this my eyes get watery . As a person who has lived abroad and away from home for a long time, this song is a good reminder that people you love are not going to be part of your life forever. Cherish the small moments and appreciate having them in your life.

Ben is an old friend. He fixed my bike a few times when I was a kid. I watched his dogs on the weekend when he would go out of town to visit his son. He doesn’t talk much anymore, but he still smiles when I visit home.
@@doughboywhineso much time has passed. Ben was a very talented musician and teacher I lived with in nola. He taught me about jazz harmony and how to not suck at music. He adored this record and its so crazy he has been gone for so long. Drugs are bad everyone

my favourite lyrics in music. Who names their child "Lady Edith"? Then there's the falling of the heads: both being caught so gently it's as if he hands are made of air; a family dividing duties between a birthing and a death, but both united by the gentleness that papa either had too much or too little of. If he had too much of it, then there must have been a smile beneath those eyes at the crack in the door. And if papa wasn't a gentle man, then his children have developed from this absence of tenderness, like a photograph the negative. Naming your daughter Lady Edith must then be a sort of victory, a triumph of tenderness, so much of it that you managed to save some for a dying man who perhaps was undeserving.

It's about a lot of things - a lot of emotions and musings about the circle of life that can be projected onto it - but at its core it's about racism in the south where Sam is from and the hope that his generation can instill a different ethic in generations to come.
All I know is that Sodom Cemetery is an actual place in Georgia, apparently, where black slaves are buried.
