  • Fort Tilden has a long history of protecting New York City and the surrounding area. It's now abandoned and full of forgotten military bunkers and batteries through out the area.

Back in the late 80's we would ride our bikes there from sheepshead bay and camp out for the night.

That overhead gantry you were looking at was most likely used for moving those 16" shells around. They weigh anywhere between 1500 and 2000 lbs.

For around 13:30 the name can be fire director, the terms change between services and period. Also sometime in the interwar period they were linked to electromechanical systems that passed the info around the facility/ship automatically without the operators needing to, as WW2 approached and began those systems were totally automated.
The target just needed to be designated and the large electromechanical computers did the rest, as World War 2 progressed RADAR increasingly replaced the optical range finding and designation though all of these innovations saw less adoption for shore to sea anti ship batteries as getting them fitted to warships was the priority, in some cases the smaller multipurpose batteries like the 8" guns kept pace for air defence.

Lots of those around San Francisco and the Golden Gate. A Terminator film was shot at one in Marin County. The best preserved are on Angel Island with 100 year old graffiti by troopers going off to the Pacific before WWI. Some are sealed off but urban explores often get into the deepest places. You ever make to it San Francisco check them out.
