Those were scratch offs
Scratch cards are notorious for having super-duper-extra low chances of winning the jackpot. So low it can go even to 1 in 500,000,000. The only pro of scratch cards is that you don't have to do advanced math to win something.
Also keep up the great UA-cam content mate

What a amazing story !!
WOW!!! that is awesome but very complicated :)
Only wholesome lottery story I’ve ever heard
Their transition into wix is so smooth i don't even 😂
The math behind this isn't so complicated, let me explain
Every ticket costed 1 dollar. He figured in a simple way that there is about 1 in 50 chance to get a winning ticket of 50$ and a 1 in 1500 chance to get a winning ticket of 1000$ dollars. Imagine if you buy 1500 tickets. Odds say that you will get 30 tickets that will give you 50 dollars each (1500 dollars in total) and 1 ticket will give you 1000 dollars. In the end you have spent 1500 dollars and have made 2500 dollars.
Doesn't make much sense because it's not about whether one person does it or the entire census, because in the end the odds would be against the lottery. So basically, if you take the salesprice of all the tickets and the sum of the payout of the tickets, they would see they would pay out more than they would earn. So either that is the case, that the lottery made a huge mistake, or it was simply a gamble to be on the luckier side of the spectrum.
Does anyone mind subbing, I TRY to be funny
This would only make sense if you were guaranteed to win almost every ticket...
@@Taylor-lh5bh no. You have very high odds of winning $50 1 in every 50 tickets. Due to standard deviation, it may be 0, or it may be higher. But it is very likely this will happen. Same thing with winning $1000 for 1 in every 1500 tickets. Very high chance of winning 1 in every 1500, maybe higher maybe lower. Due to standard deviation he may have gotten higher than calculated or lower than calculated each time, but in general since, even if the odds didnt check out you could still win, he won many nearly every time. Its pretty simple statistics/probability
the only reason I can see for not too many people figuring it out is that the games may not be super popular or not many math savy people care about lottery

The couple that you featuring, was on 60min's. that accountant that calculated what number-combo that calibrated the numbers in his
mind which would most probably would be drawn.
That moment when you say 'I will never need math in my life' ...
This was a couple from Michigan. Every month or so when the Grand prize grew to over 5 million a portion of that would roll down. It needed to get over $5 mil. before it would 'roll down". He failed to mention this but...whatever. still a fascinating story. The "Sixty Minutes" video should be available here.
He DID say that!
26M - 40% tax = 15.6M - state taxes.....??...Still a nice score.
are lottery wins taxed at that level?
connor varley they always are
@@coop3967 different in england then!
In va anything under 600 is not taxed. All the older people play multiple 50 cent tickets to avoid going over that number for the pick 4
Yea unless you claim the money under an LLC or Corporation and pay yourself a $150k a year you cut that tax burden to 24%

Well this could be avoided if this lottery just did like the casino games...ofc they need high winning odds but still need to earn on it...so let’s say you roll a dice 6 times...and you win on 2+4 but the casino wins on 1,3,5 and 6... you will have high chances but In the end the casino will always earn money if you roll 6 times...if you won on 2,4 and 6 and the casino only won on 1,3 and 5 that would make the odds 50/50 which means no one will earn from the outcome if you were to roll 6 times...
no one would be expected* anyone can roll 6 times and make money if they are lucky
劉政諺 yes but you mostly likely won’t make money off of it, cuz most people win, and then they try to win over and over again until they lose the money... thats why the house / casino, always earns
Ok so the lottery just forgot that they had to make a profit?
Roll 3 dices and put numners on them together and circle the sum of the numbers on dices

It’s okay to play because everyone has the same chance of winning
