  • There have been many changes at the gas pump throughout the years. Yes, the price has increased but the gas that is available for purchased is also different. We can now pay at the pump and there is even an electric charging option in some stations. In this video we see some of the gas station changes since the 1960s!

My father's friend owned a gas station back in the 50's and 60's. I remember the round tops of the gas pumps, his dog laying right outside, the old coca-cola machines and Hank Williams and Bluegrass music playing out loud. It was such a simpler time. Thanks for the trip back Rhetty.😊😊

I remember the S&H greenstamps. My Mother got a gold-plated silverware set in a wooden box, it had all the extra serving pieces with it as well. She would enlist my help putting all those stamps in the books, it was terrible licking and pasting those in but she always gave me ice cream as a treat for helping her. When she passed away I got her gold plated set and every special dinner I have during the holidays I use it and think of her and her green stamps.❤

@edie9330 It was so much fun collecting stamps and putting them in the books, though we usually used a wet washcloth, much easier! And it was a treat going to the redemption store to turn in the books for merchandise, although we eventually realized that after what was spent collecting the stamps, the merchandise was more expensive than it was actually worth ... but the fun of it all more than made up for it. 🥰

Working at a full service gas station was my first job in the mid 80s. As soon as someone rolled over the rubber hose and caused a ding ding inside the station, me and a friend would RUN out there, he would start filling the tank and I would wash the windows and ask the driver to pop the hood so I could check their oil. Best part of the job was I got free soda when I refilled the soda machine....lol.

So much of this video brought back many memories. My mother collected S&H Green stamps and she got a lot of our birthday gifts and Christmas presents with them. They were very helpful in the 50"s with five kids to buy for. My husband spent his teen years working in his dad's service station and I think that had a big influence with him becoming a mechanic. He was a mechanic in the Army as well and continued after getting out until his retirement. Thanks again, Rhett!

Dad would go up and not only work on our car he would work on others too. Didn't pay much but Mom sure got a lot of the S&H Green Stamps too. That was so long ago. Late 60's for sure. Thank you so much for the walk down memory lane. Take Care.

I really enjoyed this vid. I grew up in the 70s and they still filled your tank, cleaned your wideshield, etc. I remember the "gas wars" when one station would drop the price per gallon by a penny or two, and the station across the street would follow suit and even undercut the other station. I remember my parents collecting the stamps as well as the novelty glasses the stations gave out often from popular movies at the time (I think some of them even had lead paint!). It's a good thing Sinclair was not around in my neck of the woods, because, as a budding paleontologist, I woupd have insisted going there to collect the platic dinosaurs they had! A couple other companies you left out were Gulf and Standard Oil (such as Sohio), which is now BP. Some of the oldest service stations had some great brick and motar awnings. I also remember the transition to self serve and unleaded gas. In the not so distant future, we may be talking about the good ol' days of using gasoline!

In the 70's there was a San Ann station near where I lived and it was full service only. Which was good for my mom who was in a wheelchair and couldn't just hop out to pump her own gas. And the guy who ran it was so nice that there were times she would ask him to hold a check for a week or so till she got the money to cover it, and he would!! That would never happen these days.😆

Hi mate. In Australia we still had service stations right up until the early 90’s. I remember stopping at one when I was on my Learners Permit and they gave us a free area map and checked the oil, tyres and wipers for free .
I really miss those friendly days of motoring. I do still chat with service attendants as long as they are not busy today though. Often these days they have a thankless job so they love to just chat for a little while.
I don’t really drive much anymore as I work from home but thankfully I haven’t seen any of those credit card air machines over here but I do check my own tyres every couple of weeks anyway.

Speaking of Richfield, in the 70s they merged with "Atlantic" and turned into Arco! A bonus you could get from them were Noah's Arks and a new little animal with each visit. We collected several and my mom purchased an ark later. Another oddity that was available on the road were unusual drinks and snacks. When my family traveled to southern California on a camping trip, one place offered bottled chocolate milk in Pepsi bottle like containers from the vending machine. Not "Yoo-hoo" either! Haha!

I remember my dad getting gas in the 60s-early 1970s (he died in late 1974). Often he would go to gas stations principally because my mom wanted the glasses some would give out, and she'd have him top off the tank to complete a set :) I also remember a couple times where he went to get me a gift. At the Texaco station that used to be in Groveport back in the day (corner of Main St. and 317) and got me a fireman's hat; another time he was driving me from the hospital; I had suffered a head cut from a bike accident when I was 8 and he stopped at a Certified station and got me a Disney magazine to read. Gas at that time was around 25-29 cents per gallon. Shortly before his death (car accident) gas had went up to 45 cents because of the fuel embargo and that made him a little annoyed....shudder to think what he'd think nowadays, but if he had lived, he'd be 94 now.
I did work at a Hudson Oil that used to be just inside of Warren MI in the latter half of 1980; I was 18 and had graduated from Groveport HS in June of that year, and my sister who was living in Hamtramck with her husband and kids talked my mom into letting me come up and work at it with her husband. Gas was usually between $1.12 and 1.13/gallon at the time, and we had two lanes; full serve and self-serve. The joke here was that, while in full serve we'd pump your gas, clean your windshield and check your oil, in self-serve we'd still pump your gas but you wouldn't get the other amenities :) Needless to say, we did most of our business at the self-serve, because it was maybe three cents cheaper. We had a free air pump, but someone had stolen the hose and the company never replaced it.
It was a pretty rough part of town, with 8-mile a few blocks north of our location. One of the gas stations on 8-mile at the time a kid was illegally working the late shift when a couple people came in, shot the kid to death and stole $20 and $100 worth of cigarettes. I kept an iron bar with me in the evening in case things got rough.
So yeah, you might say things were a little different between the 60s and 1980 :)

His dad had ran a filling station when he was a kid and he had worked at it growing up. He made it look like a Sinclair station at first, then changed it to a Mobile, never did know why. But we had to wash windows and air up tires and pump gas just like the guys in the 1950s did. I thought it was cool. My grandpa worked for Texaco for years first starting out at the filling station for a few years after he was discharged from the army and then went on to drive a fuel truck for Texaco for like 30 years. My town had a Texaco and a Gulf filling station here in the 1950s.

Yup, I was a gas jockey in the 1960's. I started at a Gulf station. When the ding, ding went off we were required to " RUN " to the pumps. My next station was a Chevron that was open 24 hours, very rare back in those days. I worked the midnight shift and since there were very few cars stopping for gas I spent the night fixing flat tires that customers had dropped off. Great video Rhett. For me, the local gas station was a place to walk to on Saturday afternoons after cartoons were over and play a few video games. By the time I started driving, they were mostly all gone with places like QuikTrip basically taking over (and 7-11 being pushed out in favor of said QuikTrip). My mom collected the green stamps, though. I remember there was a place called Weedhoppers that was like a True Value type of place that she cashed them in at.

Thanks for another great video! Had a summer job in 1966 at a Union 76 station on on Highway 50 in northern California. Hiring test was to clean the owner's windshield. He was a retired Highway Patrol officer with many friends at the office down the road. When a CHP Dodge Polara pulled in it was fill the tank with high-test and put in a quart of oil and then check the oil again afterwards. Also, CHP received 10x Blue Chip stamps as an incentive. Not all transactions were cash - we had a credit card machine with the carbon imprint roller. Lots of travelers with old cars coming over the pass overheated and I could make a quick commission on changing a frozen thermostat in under 10 minutes. Interestingly the policy was to loan tools to any Hells Angels member to get their motorcycle running and on their way. In the summer, Union 76 would send female inspectors on tour to score stations on their appearance - especially cleanliness of the bathrooms. There would always be a phone call from a nearby station alerting us that she was coming our way. Like that you showed a picture of a 1956 Chevrolet - the interesting part of the job was discovering where the hidden gas caps were.

Well, it wasn't really "in" the station itself, just that the residence was attached to the gas station that my parents owned. My Uncle told me that he did not think that there was no gas being sold when we owned it, but I remember me and my sister stocked shelves, and crushed cans for recycling. And I remember all the "turmoil" when gas passed one dollar a gallon, because the old mechanical "computers" on the pumps couldn't be programmed for that, so they had to set them at half the cost per gallon, then the attendant would have to remember to multiply the pump reading by two. We have one gas station in my city that still does full service. Only one left. I believe it’s a Chevron station. We have ALOT of repurposed gas stations from the past. Pretty neat to see the old building being put to use.

HaHAA!!! My favorite thing to do as a kid was to jump up and down as fast as I could on the pressurized hose that ran the bell alerting the staff of a full service client! They eventually turned the hose off when they saw me coming!

Thanks for posting. I worked at a BP station while I was still in high school. We checked oil, cleaned windshields, and sold oil and cigarettes right at the pump. Risky job, especially since it was on a high volume highway with easy in and out. I got beat more than once. And we were fully exposed to the elements, no overhead protection.

We had a Texaco gas station in my neighborhood the owner would sell candy and not charge sales tax, till someone complained about it. He used to pretend to get mad when we would ring the bell with our bikes. HE enjoyed every minute of it! He also let us kids hang there on a Saturday afternoon as long as we did not interfere with the costumers, He was a good place to go

Yes, I worked at an Arco station in 1973 for about 3 months. Pumping gas, washing windshields, checking oil, etc. It was sort of fun but not something I would like to do for a career. But fond memories.

I learned to read maps from a gas station map at the age of 7...well into the '70s, gas stations gave out all sorts of free stuff. One I remember is the " Rumbler" series of toy cars...a new one each week.

I'm originally from NJ where they still do not allow car owners to fill up their gas tanks so a tradition that remains. When I drove from NJ to CA nearly 50 years ago, the price of gas was about 37 cents a gallon.

    Miss these!
Many of the attendants could help you if you were in trouble. Now days, if you get gas and in trouble, the convenience store employees don't know what to do. I think this is a tragedy now. Things like checking tires, oil, etc is critical for safety. Now, we have to figure it out. Hope for the best.

In the early 2000s I worked at a full service Gulf gas station . It was one of two left in the area at the time .
I rode past there a while back , I think the family still owns the building but it's just a repair shop and had
the pumps removed . When I worked there the owner/boss would have me clean every windshield on every car
that came in and got more than $5 in gas even if it was freezing out , I would just have to polish that ice off and
get my work out at the same time . There were no and ifs or buts, those windshields had to be cleaned...

My late Father had a Sinclair service station in Trenton, NJ from the 1930’s until 1987. I worked there from 1972-1980. Had lots of fun there, especially at Christmas time. My Uncle had a Texaco Station about 6 blocks down from my Dad. They weren’t in competition because my Uncle concentrated more on Wrecker service. Learned a lot about people by working at the gas station.

Fun trip to the past. Architecturally, some of those old full-service stations were amazing. When I started driving in 1980 there were still quite a few, but self-service stations were outnumbering them, though some stations had both full and self. Of course being a broke teen I had to use the self-service as full-service was more expensive. I miss those days and those stations, but, I have to admit, I do love Buc-cees with their spotless restrooms and great BBQ. I am sure there were others but the very last full service station I saw was in about 2012 or so in Boulder Colorado.

I wasn't driving at that time but I remember this as a child.
Being called a service station it truly held up to its name with real service.
I really hate it nowadays, if you are going to pay with cash you have to go in and wait in the line while others who are buying cigarettes, chips, milk, lottery tickets, etc., it really stinks.😮
