  • What was supposed to be a 4 day UK & Scotland road trip was aborted on the first day. My Porsche Cayman 981 GT4 wasn't made for road surfaces like this. That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.
I'd sooner stay at home than drive on roads like this again.

I'm British Indian. 30 years ago when I got married I went to India for 5 weeks for a holiday. I came back and felt grateful to be back in the UK , even though I paid 40% income tax in a big chunk of money every year. The reasons I was grateful were
    1. Great roads .
    2. The police would turn up when needed
    3. I could visit my GP anytime without an appointment .
    4 a sense of security
5 yes, I paid a lot of tax, but felt it was worth it for all the public services we got - everything worked
6 a polite and respectful and decent public
Fast forward 30 years and I'm selling up and relocating abroad.
The pot holes are emblematic of a country in freefall.

I have carbon fibre wheels and the state of the UK roads are at a point where they are ruining the fun of motoring. I use Waze to get notifications of potholes but as they're everywhere now, that's also fairly pointless. It's funny how the councils can spend millions creating bus lanes and road closures in cities that actually create more traffic problems but they can't fund proper maintenance of the existing roads. I hate to think what it must be like as a cyclist or motorbike rider.

It's got to the point where buyers choose cars based on their ability to deal with these roads, and manufacturers engineer features to cope with them, so the motorist is paying in multiple ways for the problem, whilst authorities do nothing.

I live up around Aberdeen, and the roads here are an absolute disgrace. But the councils would rather spend money on stupid tourism projects that nobody wanted, then turn around and say they don't have the money to fix the roads. Went over to the USA last October, and I don't think I encountered a single proper pothole until we got to the cities. The countryside outback roads were absolutely phenomenal, proper roads you could drive on. And if you had a sports car, have proper fun on. The UK government just don't care about drivers and cars, so they'll make driving as miserable of an experience as possible because they clearly don't care about driving or the citizens who use them.

Potholes are terrible. Worst I’ve ever seen in over 30 years of driving in UK. First time ever I had to get recovered 2 weeks ago after pothole took out brand new PS4S on my Boxster. I was only doing 35 mph in Sussex, moved to miss one and ended up in bigger one.
Biggest problem is I’m now scanning road directly in front of car when driving, and less on what’s coming ahead in distance. Not good.

Here we go again. The “Road fund” was abolished in about 1935. We pay Vehicle Tax for the privilege of using a car, and even then it’s based on pollution potential and ( up to now) electric cars pay nothing at all. Vehicle tax is part of general taxation and has nothing to do with roads.

This situation has been in the making for nearly half a century. 40-50 years ago a cross party political consensus came into being to allow the UK's non trunk roads to gradually deteriorate on the simple basis that due to the extensive tarmaccing of our road network post 1918, they were now deemed too expensive to maintain long term. You leave a main road at your peril nowadays and the situation is only going to get worse, alas.

Exactly. Things get done for those who shout loudest or have the most publicly embarrassing problems. It's all about budget innit. Councils are inefficient and wasteful on their best days so despite high taxes they have to pick and choose what gets done. I can understand (but not condone) them doing the wealthy streets because if those people move away out of frustration then it will cause a bigger income hole to the council than the less rich abandoning ship would.

reason i swear by steel wheels and soft suspension, next car still soft suspension but with alloy wheels but over time i may swap them out will see how they do. over 90% of my driving i choose to drive the back roads they are more enjoyable than big roads even if road surface is bad, worse the road slower you need to be and no damage. ive had fun on bad A roads when someone tried to push me through a town in car 3x the power of my car i decided have some fun kept it legal tho, my car steel wheels soft suspension good tires with a good wide wall and new brakes the bmw performance car could not keep up, he pushing so hard at one stage, prob getting frustrated he push to hard exit of a corner and lost back end he back down after that and even tho i slowed every corner i still gaining ground before long i did not see him at all. point im making no point having a very powerful car on tires what not suited as a cheap car can be faster and still just as much fun and less likely damage. ive hit potholes the first sec i thought i torn the wheel off it was hell of a hit but tire was not damaged and did another 1000 miles before i got home and when i did change the tyres all what needed was guy with hammer banging slight dent out tracking was only slightly out after that so did not effect tyres. these roads last roads we have freedom we pick speed whats safe not a limits what far below what safe what we see on many other big roads these roads you need to think and plan and read the roads well , real driving not roads nanny state holds your hands, id say even if some bad just enjoy them and as i have car whats good for these roads a small city car with good tyres high sidewall and soft suspension i can enjoy them more
