No one ever gets the left side to mirror image the right side. The best I can do is fake it by making the strips narrower or making the strips wider with incerts. The professional are now resorting to the router trick to make things less noticeable.
I'm going to hide mine by putting epoxy with graphite on the boat under the waterline. I figure it should also help with the kids rowing up onto rocks near the shore.

You want to know what holds strips apart? Glue. When the glue dries now you have a void where the glue used to be.
I have some other cracks to fill on this boat, so I'll look for light spots to fill when I'm doing that too. Thanks for the comment.
