Nice to see you finally seeing the light. Yes, indeed Mademoiselle Nicolai is the real modern day Guerlain and it is clear in the quality of her creations. She doesn’t follow trends, she creates what she knows best and that is fine French perfumes of the highest class.
Starts with a fougere-like opening with Thyme & Lavender complimented by fresh Citrus and a dry citrus note from Citron fruit. This transitions to a spicy & smokey accord: Black Pepper, Clove, Incense. The dry down is what I like the most with amber & vanilla-like facets mixed with white musks and animalic accords. The perfume is never dense or goes flat, but is pitch perfect, radiant and with substance.
I wear NYI to weddings. It’s so elegant to my nose. I don’t think it smells anything like Heritage, but has the same style if that makes sense (classy gentleman perfumes).
Hi Eugen! Part of learning & growing (shows a lot intelligence & ability) to review & change one’s opinion with new information, etc. Of course, we all have personal preferences. In any case, thank you for the review!
Nice review. NYI is a bit of a strange one for me. I was initially seduced by it and still like the first hour or two and then the dry down lets me down. Whenever I think about wearing it, I normally just grab Bois du Portugal instead.
Timeless class frag. Very complex, well made and smooth. I enjoy wearing it very much. Need to dress up to the occasion though.... or the right disposition.
It’s probably not dinged by fragcom (est 2012), and the forums/social media (est 2003) for having shades of other classics because it was released it 1988, six years before Heritage and the nose’s heritage IS Guerlain.
I have like 4 bottles of Heritage… 93’ 10’ 19’ and 20’.. it’s my fav perfume :) this doesn’t remind me of heritage at all, for some odd reason, my bottle is very bitter, even weirdly plasticky to my nose on the dry down. I love the opening, but the bitter dry down just kind of rubs me the wrong way. I shall let it sit a little more. Anyone else finds that? Or is it because I ddint let it settle/macerate enough. Nice review as always Eugene!
I'm very late to the party. I recently discovered New York Intense. Beautiful citrus opening mixed with oakmoss. Whenever I wear this I feel the warmth from this scent.
New York was released in 1989, while Bois du Portugal was released in 1987. It takes a lot of time for Patricia to release a new fragrance, so it is possible that 2 houses were working at the same time on a similar concept. Bois du Portugal is a fougere, while New York is not. New York Intense in a flanker to New York, so it is Roja Dove Diaghilev’s inspired from it. Derby was indeed released before all, so let’s give Patricia, a member of the Guerlain family props for being inspired from her roots. She does not look at the market and release something after it. Not like Roja!!
i have been wearing New York Intense to the Rangers' playoff games. So far so good. It is obviously a chip off the Guerlain block, but I feel like where Guerlain has had to reformulate their mitsouko over the decades, Nicolai have few restrictions and keep the healthy dose of oak moss and perhaps other allergens. Great scent.
I'm confounded by the comparisons to Heritage as well (I own both a gold cap and a wooden cap). I Also don't get the BdP comparison either. BdP is a lot drier to my nose to the point of being austere. NYI is richer and fuller to me and the tasteful animalic notes really set it apart in the dry down. I burned through 30ml bottle a while back and just ordered another.
It’s definitely classic & sophisticated . Yes it hints @ some names that you mentioned but to my nose it is so so close to Dior eau sauvage parfum 2017 but nicolai is just a tad brighter because of the citrus top notes . Glad you were wrong :) :) :)
My wedding is later this year and I haven’t officially chosen a wedding day scent yet but the list is narrowed down and out of the top 5 choices, three of them are Nicolai with New York Intense being at the top.
@@Smoke_C I’m with you on the Patchouli Intense. I liked Bois Belize a lot as well, that one surprised me, it wasn’t what I was expecting at all. From some of the descriptions I read I was expecting something similar to New York Intense but less leather and more green/woody notes but what I get from it is a very dominant mate/tea scent with the supporting notes off in the background there sort of just complimenting that beautiful tea & spice note. It also wasn’t as aggressive as some of the reviews said, it didn’t fill a room but more just kinda floats around me. I’m curious to know how it acts on you, do you get a similar experience or do you get more of the vetiver and woods? I like it a lot but it just took me a little more time because it caught me completely off guard. Have you tried the new Riviera scent by Nicolai?
I find New York way better than New York intense. And New York (edt) is close to Chanel Pour monsieur to my nose. Mme De Nicolaï is a great creator, Patchouli intense, incense oud are also masterpieces for me
Why do you prefer the EDT over the Intense version? What are the differences? Chanel Pour Monsieur is my favourite fragrance but has very poor performance, so I'm on the hunt for something similar. I have a 30ml of NYI but I've never tried the EDT.
@@anthonybee1981 New York feels to me more balanced and smooth. It’s bright, easy to wear, I find it is a gentleman’s scent, where intense version is darker, and loses sophistication to my nose
@@laelian Thank you for your reply. I think I'll order a 30ml of New York - I don't mind if it smells a bit 'thinner', I tend to prefer lighter fragrances as I spend most of my time at work. I prefer Floris Special no. 127 to no. 89, for example.
@@laelian New York will be discontinued this year they told me this at the shop in paris while i was buying th intense version on New York For me it’s the same fragrance literally the same thing sadely we can’t have samples of new york edt no more
In the opening I didn’t get Diaghilev, but at the 2 and a half hour mark, it smells very very similar to Diaghilev. So much so that I had to go get both perfumes and test them side by side. Eerily similar to me at the 2 hour mark or so.
Sometimes a fragrance needs to match or as to match the vive of the scent i lost count of how many times they do surprise me at second or third or latter
why is le lion priced so much when it takes pieces from many important perfumes???? why are your perfumes priced so much when they also take pieces from other great perfumes???
Finally! You’ve come around to NY intense. It was love at first sniff for me. I find it most similar to bois du Portugal.
new editions of Bois du Portugal seem to lack the magic
You weren’t “wrong”, it just wasn’t for you at that time, and now it is! :) that said, glad you’ve come around- I love this one!

Seeing this Elvis really reminded me that I have to get more into this house. Great vid!!

Fou-Chypre - Eugen 2022
I really like this. Her style is very classically French and I dig that.

Excellent stuff! I love both versions, been using the edt for around a decade now

I just revisited NY intense. It was to much for me a year ago, But now I love it. It’s the little dab will do ya fragrance.

Bruh…wha’ happened?!?!
How we both finally came around to this on the same exact day, I’ll never know. Better consult the Spirit Guides on this one.
lol..Witness;)..(then Duck shot him down)
I just consult tea fragrances. They told me to beware of a frilly-haired man. Any idea what it...ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. 😳

Hi eugen, can you please give your thoughts on ambre suprême of les indémodables ? More vidéo on this house would be dope
Like you did before, I also mind there something, probably the oakmoss accord. It is similar to Azemour from PdE or Afternoon of a Faun from ELDO.
Best of the best of the best... SIR
Yes i get a lot lether a masterpiece!
It's not heritage
I get bois de Portugal after the very beginning a robust one
Great video!
I’m glad you like this one now. I was starting to get worried 😉.
I own a 30ml. I bought Chanel last night see dry down familiar. Should I skip Heritage? I had decant of bdp which didnt seem the same to me.

When is your brand coming out
I got Habit Rouge vibe and also Tom Ford Noir vibe
Me too! The opening reminded of Habit Rouge and Le lion
Hello! How is the performance? How many hours it last? Projection? Thanks
24 hours longevity! 7 hours of pretty good projection. It’s not a beast mode, but it never intended to be. It is just a wonder!
I never thought Diaghilev but can see it with the animalics/moss
is this similar to eua sauvage parfum? or its just my thoughts

I enjoy this one.
This a nice "consolidation" perfume of many classics.. A homage... but I don't understand the hype, masterpiece, GOAT etc... chill out bros.
She is a Guerlain and also, it's far more affordable. Her pricing reveals Roja's bullshit.
..careful, not to kick those diors on the floor.
Smells like a thicker creed bois du Portugal
