Honestly, I don't even like that much to 100% my games. Most times the game is pretty fun, but what you need to do to get the remaining achievements are boring and menial tasks. Like, a fun action-adventure game with cool combat? Great. But now you need to collect 1000 flags or whatever? Not so great. Those tasks are so boring that I avoid doing them in order not to sour the experience. Better to move on to other games.

I only ever 100% FromSoft games because I feel like they design the trophies in a way that you already collect most of them on a normal playthrough and can easily collect the rest when going for other endings. I don't think most games are really designed for 100% because it usually involves a lot of tedium and busywork.

The only game I decided to 100% was Dredge, and honestly it took some of the enjoyment out of the game and makes me look back at it with PTSD. I really appreciate what Mortismal does because I couldn't do it. The 100% is generally a gimmick I don't care much about since he can rate a game by not pushing himself to do every achievement, plus his reviews are just high quality and objective about the game as a whole; if anything I'm surprised it doesn't ruin his opinion on the games after such slogs to do everything who knows how many times.
Also, because Dredge got more content the 100% for the game is gone...

But your viewers are not just here for some random 100%-ing, but also to get your personal perspective, including your taste and biases. The most brutal platinum trophy ive ever seen was from the Gran Turismo series (driving simulator) in GT Sport.
RPGS have some insane challenges but GTSport just blows them out of the water; 2 of the gold trophies you require for Platinum are "Win 250 online ranked races" (remember the game is ranked ladder leagues, so as you win, you get put into harder lobbies) and "Get Pole position qualifying in Online races 200 times"
For context, I played the game quite regularly and was a tier A/A+ driver (S being the best) for about a year and a half, and only won about 15 races, and got pole about 7 times.
Literally about 5 people out of thousands had the platinum trophy, and all of them were either real life professional racers or were youtube streamers who played it 6+ hours a day for years straight.

With SMT V: Vengeance, there’s a secret boss where you can only unlock if you complete canon of Creation on true neutral ending then go on to do Canon of Vengeance which essentially means playing the game twice just to unlock the boss.

You don’t need to beat true neutral in CoC to unlock that boss. You just need to beat the game and can immediately reload your old save and attempt him.

I did The Ultimate in PoS1. I've watched guides, went through excell loot tables (for Raedric's Hold, each day you have different loot in some of the boxes) and I've learnt to kite like a god. That being said: I've kind of save-scummed too. I've realized that if you drop to zero HP, there's actually like five seconds before the death screen. You can hit ESC and reload the last save, game only deletes your save after death screen. If things went sideways during fight, I'd reload. If you panic, you can still ALT+F4. It's not 100% legit, but by the end of the Ultimate run, I clocked close to 370 hours (85 of which were my first playthrough years ago, 120 PoTD and around 10 for "less than 10 rests") and my estimate was that to do it absolutely legitimately, I'd need 300 to 400 more. Some fights have such a specific positioning that it takes dozens of tries to figure out how to solo it. Alpine Dragon, Lathander. I did have a lot of fun, though and was kind of disappointed that PoE 2 does not have this achievement. (Yeah, I need my digital shiny trinket :P )

Look I don't actually review games with %100 as my stock and trade so I tend not to %100 a whole lot. What puts me off some achievements is that they require so much grind that I worry it will just spoil my enjoyment of the game (in fact I have had this happen in the past when I was younger and getting %100 seemed more important). These days I will look at an achievement list and decide pretty much in advance if I think its doable. To be honest Mort, I know %100ing games you review is like your signature move so to speak, but you are a good and thorough reviewer and I would watch your reviews regardless, but man, sometimes I look at the games you %100 and just wince as I know how much work it might have taken.
Just to close, skipping %100ing the PoE games is the right move. I like both those games but the %100 requirement was a "Nope, not going to try that, it will make me hate the game". I mean you pretty much how to cheat to %100 PoE 1 at this point anyway and if you are faffing about with other peoples save files and stuff.....it takes away you %100ing anyway. (Fun fact I actually have the backer achievement because a close friend of mine backed the game to the tune of two copies and gave one of them to me)

There was definitely a hefty dose of survivor-ship bias when I was doing games journalism for a gamer website. If I didn't like the game I usually wouldn't want to waste my time putting the effort into the review. I liked drawing attention to games I enjoyed and growing a community on that site to play them together with.

love the 100% gimmick because it's something i'd never strive for. however, you need to be realistic and make sure that your "100%" is a realistic "actually 100% achievable". an award for kickstarting a game is not an actual achievement, you can safely ignore those. reminds me of that old Halo 2(?) achievement where you could only get it if you killed someone in multiplayer who already had it - that's an insane thing to hold yourself to as it has no impact whatsoever on your ability to review the game. stick to your 100% but within logical bounds, imo. your BG3 stuff was pivotal for getting me deeper into the game, much love

Against the Storm is a ridiculously well designed game. Probably never going to finish it. It does get a bit repetitive after a 100 hours, and I literally got a 100+ other games I want to play. Which is okay when you deliver near perfection before that.

Not so funny story for Pillars of Eternity 1.
Had to use Console commands to finish the last boss.
Typed the Invulnerable(GOD) command and... no joke, went afk for like 5 mins, that last guy was healing indefinitely and I was no close of killing him.
Forgot what commands I used to kill him. Never got the achievement that proved that I finished the game.

SMT VV is actually a game only slow on first playthrough (and second playthrough if you just switch to the other campaign), but you could pretty much speedrun on later playthroughs (unless you like more challenge and want to do newborn/godborn mode). I've seen people finish 100% of the game around 120 hours, so it won't touch 200 hours, unless you just want to play around with the game like I did.

I realise this is not a game that would (probably) be your cup of tea, but BY FAR the hardest achievement I have ever come across is one called "Pathfinder" in a game called "Euro Truck Simulator 2". On the surface it doesn't sound all that bad... travel every single road in the game. Uh huh... 3000+ hours in and I am 76% complete. If that is not enough the map gets expanded every year, and a few times a year old sections get remade, which wipes your progress in those areas. The fact that 2% of players have this achievement is incredible, and even then I suspect most of those got it sometime after launch when the map was much smaller, 12 years ago.

I cannot imagine playing a contemporary RPG to 100% completion. I only have so much time, and there are far too many games to play. I don't even care to track achievements, and I don't like to torture myself by playing at hard difficulty levels, so there isn't a chance that it will happen. I probably have reached 100% on some old RPGs, but achievement tracking wasn't a thing at the time, so it is impossible to know for certain. I'm almost certain that I have seen all there is to see in the Ultima games from IV through VII, including Savage Empire and Martian Dreams. This would include talking to every NPC (with the exception of the multiple generic guards who all have the same dialogue), fully exploring the land mass, every town, and every dungeon and cave, hoarding all available unique loot, and completing all of the quest lines. In Ultima I through III, there probably are some dungeons I haven't entered or fully explored, but they are all rather generic, so when you have seen one, you have seen them all. I have fully explored everything else in those games.

These videos make me think about achievements and how people think about "completion" etc. Sometimes achievements can be like a way for the game to suggest special challenges to players- like say, an RPG with dozens of achievements for playing a game with various limitations, like soloing as a thief, playing as a party of all fighters, playing without using any potions - something more dedicated players might dip into and try one or two, but where it would be extremely tedious to do every single one. How can a game highlight various special challenges without creating a special kind of hell for completionists? Maybe grouping challenges together, and making a point of not tracking them individually? Anything tracked individually is an implied invitation to complete all of it, I suppose.

About half way through my Ultimate run for PoE1, been about 7 hours or so. It's not as bad as I dreaded years ago and just recently biting the bullet on going for the 100%.
There's two people out there in the world that I know of that have done The Ultimate with every single class, and @Ultrabuu85 is one of them. His videos are an excellent source on how to do the Ultimate with any class you want in under 15+ hours.
Still don't look forward to Concelhaut and Llengrath, but at least the Sky Dragon is dead.
Edit: Oh, and there's a way to get the achievement for the Kickstarter Backer without cheating. There's a guide somewhere on Steam with someone who posted a save file of a new character in Glided Vale or something that unlocks the achievement. Load the save file and boom. I backed it back then, but to make it an achievement to of done so was bullshit.
Edit 2: Completed the Ultimate with a total of 28ish hours spent on it. It really wasn't that bad. Again, shout out to www.youtube.com/@Ultrabuu85 and their videos!

Upside, the reasons for not 100%ing some of theses can highlight some things that make them a bit more attractive to some of us. I didn't know there were so many layers to Songs of Conquest. Didn't know there was a hall of fame for PoE but I'm also not actually a masochist. But I'm reminded again that SMT5... exists. I've seen some bits of early gameplay, but because people are so darn afraid of spoiling things, I just don't know what the plot is or why I should care? Like, cool, another remix of the demon fusion system I've definitely somewhat tolerated in Persona games. And what else? I'd always rather be "spoiled" on things than have no compelling reason to give them a second glance or hunt down a review that's good and more than just bare bones.

Realms of Ruin was a strange beast for me. I actually digged the campaign story but like you I never finished it for the same reason, it got quite repetitive. Mechanically it had this strange rock-paper-scissors sort of mechanic going as well (like shield was very good against 'missile', which was good against sword, which was good against shield or vice versa or something like that), which felt weird to me personally. In a sense, TWW series had that too, but the bonuses were less obvious. The campaign also sorta just switched between the races as well, which sounds kinda good, except the rock paper scissors thing essentially just meant you were doing the same thing with different skins.
The upgrade/settlement system imo was not in my view overly fun.
I think I played it for a week or so and then uninstalled it. It's lurking in my game library now. I genuinely think it had the potential to be a really good introduction for players to the AoS game like Dawn of War did for 40k, but it just wasn't to be.

I can't bring myself to just slog through NG++++ of games that are both really long and hard as nails all throughout, even when just going through the world. It's not like Black Myth Wukong where you get breaks between bosses and can just feel powerful for a bit. The random affixes, the enormous list of missions that have to be cleared one by one on each difficulty for completion like it's Borderlands 2... Plus I'm just not a good parrier.
