I absolutely love your channel! Great input and a plethora of knowledge and experience.
I’ve learned so much from you I’m 67 years old am still working on a job hunted all my life I’m getting my new 40 pd. Recurve set up been a great help May God Bless you always thanks.
I've looked at charts, and I've read how-to guides, but this made it click. Thanks Jeff!
I am really glad to see more guys pushing for lighter bows in the trad community. I shot a heavier bow up till a couple months ago (around 52lb @29") with 400 spine arrow right at 10 GPP. It was a great bow that tuned well but I wanted more accuracy with lighter weight. I now shoot 47lb and 340 spine arrow (12 GPP around 575gr) well tuned, and I don't have to tell you this, but my efficiency sky rocketed. Its a blistering set up. I am absolutely on board with everything you are saying and would go so far to say less is more, but as you say also... tuning is critical. Thanks for the great content!
Love this man’s enthusiasm !
Efficiency of arrow weights, and efficiency with words! Every time this man spoke pure facts came out.
Thank you sir!
by far the best explanation of spine vs length and poundage!!!
Thank you Mark we really appreciate that!
I am loving the channel and i subscribed. Really useful all the information. Thanks!
Great video. Love your content Jeff.
Thank you sir!
I just stumbled across you channel and love it. I’ve but shooting some from of archery for 51yrs. I have a 38lbs bow myself that loves the 600 spine shafts. You do a lot for the Traditional Community with all the arrow test you run. I’d like to say Thank You 👍 I liked and subscribed
Awesome! Thank you so much 👍🏻
Great video Jeff. I am getting ready to re-setup my compound bow's arrows and am still in the process of setting up my 45 lb (47 lb measured) Montana longbow. I have my 500 spine Warrior arrows and my 200 gr VPA signal bevel broadheads. I am looking for a 200 gr field point for practice, but most bow shops don't stock those points around middle PA. I have been teaching my local bow shops about Dr Ashby, FOC, and arrow tuning, though I am still a beginner at it myself. Your videos have helped me a ton.
Thank you sir and 3rivers Archery has the field tips 200gr
Awesome as usual Jeff. Getting ready to order a bow from you soon!
Awesome thanks brother!
Thanks brother. God bless you. Going to do an arrow tune for my 40# longbow at 29" at 225grain up front. 600, 500 and evern some 400 spine carbons at 6.2mm diameter. Your tutorials are my go too. I will report back.
Just absolutely love each and every one of your video classes here, keeps the mind fresh and opens up a ton of thoughts for us traditional toxopholites, and amen for sharing your solid facts with your neighbors and helping with your gifts🙏
We really appreciate that thanks so much!
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I have some Gold Tip Warrior arrows that are 500 spine, 7.4 gpi with 4" feather fletchings.
The first 9 I got were 30" (I think) but I had them cut down to 28". Got 4 more yesterday, but leaving them at 30".
The field points I have are 4 different shapes and lengths but seem to weigh the same (based on holding them in hand). And according to 2 of the packaging, they're 100 grain.
I also have 2 recurves that are 40#, one being a one-peice of 26" long and the other being a take down that's average length (which used to be dad's).
Does the bow length effect accuracy?
And what grain tip would you recommend?
[I don't exactly know that my draw length is]
@@ReligiousPrime sounds like you have a lot of learning to do
@@PazNthru, well considering that was from a year ago...
and you're just replying to me now...
I think it's safe to say that my archery knowledge has grown since then.
just sayin
@@ReligiousPrime Okay tex glad everything worked out for you.
Hi Jeff. Thanks for the info. One thing I have found that helps me is using gold tip fact weights that screw in the back of the insert. It allows me to add weight without weakening the shaft because it reduces the length of the bending part of the arrow shaft. Very nice for tweaking things without cutting the arrow.
Yes they do work great but we’ve had to actually glue them with hot melt because they come loose and begin to rattle inside the arrow so we primarily use solid brass inserts up to 100gr in gold tips but as long as they’re glued they’re great especially for micro tuning point weight 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 The guys at Northwoods pro shop in Michigan had me use the blue "locktite thread glue which allows easy removal if needed as another option..
Very good video mate as always 😁
Spot on information. Shooting 600 spine barebow onlys at 28 3/4 with 215gn up front, Widow PLX 40@27. Absolute darts.
Such a great video, thank you. Super helpful and fun.
Thanks!
Awesome video. Thanks so much!
Thanks brother!
I very recently got serious about shooting my Longbow. I have a Galaxy Black Hunter one piece hybrid longbow. it's 62" and 45# at 28. I draw 28.5#. I'm shooting Easton Classic 500 spine the carbon arrow "tube" is cut 31" I use a 100gr insert with 150gr point, 3-4" feathers, wrap, and lighted knock. Total weight 530 grains and just a bit weak spined. It's pretty much a laser out to 30yds with bare spine. It shoots a Zwickey Eskimo perfectly for as far out as I can still hit three bales of hay. The Zwickey is about 15 grains lighter and might be making up for that little bit of weakness I'm seeing with a 150gr point.
I set up the chronograph and shot through it at 10-20-30 yards. According to some you should have 25ft-lb of kinetic energy. According to Easton's calculator at 50 (edit: 530) grains I need at least 150 ft/sec to maintain the amount of KE. So at point blank I'm shooting 164 fps. (with factory string). At 10 yds velocity is 158 fps, 20 yds velocity is 155, 30 yds velocity is 153 and that's as far as I could shoot. If that velocity trend holds true I would retain enough energy out to 40 yards. It doesn't matter I don't have the accuracy nor precision to take that shot. I'm good to 25 and I'm happy with the energy at 25 yards. I've hunted with a bow since I was 18 and I'm 53 now. I've never even took a shot at anything over 30 yards. Almost everything has been under 20. Here in PA there's lots of pressure and you just don't catch bucks walking around in the open. Killed some Elk in Colorado too. Those have all been REAL close.
Take care and make sure you come to full draw.
Your piece of land is so beautiful. God is great 👍🏻
Thanks!
Thank you very much.
Would you kindly tell me how long it takes to become a instinctive archer beginner --- 4-INCH group at 20 yards?
Good video thanks for sharing
Hey Jeff! I have a 45lb @ 28inch Fleetwood timber ridge(basically a black hunter). I draw 28inches, do you think I can make 400 spine or 500 black eagle vintage arrow tune better? Im flexible on point and insert weight. i would probably cut the arrows to 29 at the shortest, i dont mind having long arrows. Tia!
What are the brand/model of your longbows? Nice video.
Excellent video !
When you say bare shaft arrows, do you mean arrows with No feathers or vanes on them ?
Great content
Thanks so much I really appreciate that!
Hi love you videos just got a new recurve 35 ib bow using 550 grain arrow I draw to 29 ib so its a bit more then 35 in your opinion enough for deer and what range should I keep it in
My other recurve is 50ib would like to hunt with the new one if I can . I feel the less ib bow makes me shoot more accurate.
Yes sir it’s all about a well placed shot and a sharp two blade broadhead with the lighter bows but yes it should be fine with the arrow weight being that good 👍🏻
G'Day Jeff. Thanks for the video. Can you tell me something about that target to the right of the round bale? I haven't seen one like that up here in Eastern Ontario Canada. Take care.
It’s a Bone-A-Fide target they’re great !
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Thank You. I'll check them out.
Im shooting a new 38# Roy Hall longbow at 26” with 485gr total weight Gold Tips and Simmons 190gr Tree Sharks. I’m 2 for 2 in the last 2 weeks. I went from a 50# Bear Super Grizzly to 38#’s because of shoulder issues. I have a few hunting videos on here. I’ve shot every broadhead in the book and I’m telling you the Simmons Tree Sharks and Great Whites are the way to go!
Who makes the glove you are using?
Nice
With the gold tip warriors can you take out the light inserts and put in the heavy inserts without damaging the arrow?
I would have thought maybe recommending a recurve with low pounders cause of the efficiency factor
Excellent video as always
Why would I be getting nock high bareshaft no matter how much I lower the nocking point?
I'm shooting a 45# @ 28" I'm a 28.5 DL I want to shoot a 150 grain broadhead
What you recommend.
Hmm usually going up with the nock takes it out but sometimes it actually the spine or too much point weight causing it unless the tiller is wrong for how you shoot 🤔
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 I'm definitely new to trad I'm using three under if you could make a short video on proper way holding the string or add it on a new video would be awesome I will try what you mentioned
Thanks for the response
@@greekmaster1001 absolutely we will do that !
Do you think the Dynamic Spine Calculator from 3 Rivers is a good method to use?
I don’t have the time & resources to do a tune the old fashioned way. I just need a good hunting arrow. This vid helped! Thanks
Well that’s a toss up for sure with them but if you’ll send me all your specs for your setup as far as draw length and poundage plus what weight broadheads or field points you want to run I can definitely direct you as to what spine you’re gonna need and all thanks!
I’m shooting a 40# longbow. My draw is 30”. I’d like to use VPA 3 blades (150gn being the lightest).
Black Eagle Instinct shafts with the 100gn outsert is what I’d like to use for arrows. Or Easton 5mm axis trad.
Don’t have the greatest selection up here in Canada!
@@gordie4059 sounds like the perfect setup to me in a 500 spine just make sure to get the black Eagle FOCOS Outserts and you’ll be happy!
I see what you mean. I put those exact specs in the calculator with a 31” 500 and is shows the arrow as being too weak for the bow. I may have to do a half dozen of 500s and 400s to see for myself. Cabelas here is useless and most small archery shops don’t sell singles.
Thanks for the reply! Appreciate the advice!
Hey Jeff, do you think with a 36-37# hoyt satori with a 450- 500grain 2 blade cut on contact arrow would be any good for aussie boars?

I bought the Sanlida eagle x9 thanks to your review on it. I got the 45 lb limbs at 28 in draw. I have a 26.5 draw length. Question is which would better a 500 or 600 spine arrow with 100 grain insert and 150 grain broadhead ?
You should be good with 500’s👍🏻
Awesome !! I’m just getting into the traditional and your videos have been great help. I’ve already ordered an upgraded string and beaver ball as well as a glove but I’m stuck on what brand of arrow to get lol. Thank you for all your help.
@@carinosotoves3117 can’t go wrong with Gold Tips, Black Eagles or Easton .204 Fred Eichler Legacy!
Thanks again I’ll check them out.
I have a 32 inch draw and I find it hard to find shafts long enough to be able to tune easily
Black eagle has 34” shafts.
He is correct black eagle is what I shoot with a 32" draw, I shoot the deep impact impact small diameter shaft and it is a very tough shaft. I shoot that same arrow for 3-D and for hunting
Hi Jeff.Iam an archer from the UK.We cannot hunt over here by law with bows.My question is i have a very short draw length 26".Do i need the upfront point weight for 3D shooting .I Am using 27"600spine arrows weighing 280grain out of a35lb Hoyt Buffalo
Not near as much but you still need some for accuracy alone, higher FOC guides the arrow much better and helps eliminate wind drift 👍🏻
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Thanks for the info 👍🏹
I’m a right handed shoot and have a 60” 40lb@28 longbow. DL is 28” . Currently shooting 500 big Jim dark Timber arrows cut to 29 inches with a 100 grain insert and 150 grain field point up front for total bare shaft weight over 510 grains. I keep getting a nock left reading. What could be the problem? Brace height bow recommendation is 7.5-8”. Currently set at 8” I’m reaching out for more insight and help thanks
Hmm that’s strange honestly I wouldn’t think they’d be weak at all, make sure you’re holding the bow completely vertically when testing, if it’s canted and you have a nock high it’ll appear tail left, but if not you may need to try a different brand in a 500 just to see if it’s the Dark Timber arrow just being actually a little weak?
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Sir I just want to say thank you so much for the content and information you put out. After reviewing my longbow and arrow setup I added electrical tape to the rear to mimic the weight and stiffness fletchings provide and slightly lowered the brace height. Bingo!! - James from Los Angeles CA
@@jblanla awesome! It really does make a difference, I sometimes have to bare shaft test with a wrap and a lumenok if that’s what I’m going to be hunting with.
What's the trick to running those lite arrows w that much weight up front and not getting nock high from tip weight
It’s definitely a balance and too much will cause it for sure but usually it takes around 300 grains up front to start having the effect also arrow length and spine can be a major factor as with how the bow itself is tillered. I’ve had great luck with 600’s at around 5.9 gpi and 200 gr up front on 40 pound bows for hunting.
Where can I find your bows
I'm shooting 500 spine 0075 aluminum 30 in with 125 pt weight and they shoot weak in my 40-43 # bows. I'm completely confused. Feel I need to go to 400 spine
It’s very possible, depends on what you’re actually drawing.
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 27 inch
Okay all I would do is cut the shaft down some, my 2117’s are only 28 3/4” with 300gr up front
I believe your videos are good ,however audio seems to go in and out. Kinda like mic is 20' away while your talking. Great info keep up good work
How much is too much? I have some 400 spine around 650 grains out of a 45# longbow. That’s over 14 grains per pound . Wondering when you start getting diminishing returns?
Thanks and very good question, I’ve personally found that it greatly depends on the type of bow itself and several other factors such as draw length, stored energy of the bow and the type of arrow itself as in diameter but in general I believe once you pass the 650gr mark you definitely begin to loose trajectory quickly usually past 20 yards which is fine in a lot of cases but to me the perfect balance of speed or flatter trajectory and penetration is found between 480 and 580 at least for a 45# bow and the heavier poundage bows do well with more but still not usually past 650gr.👍🏻
Thank you for your response. Your videos on this subject were very helpful.
What point weight you suggest for 600 spine, 31 inch arrow, 30 pound bow, I'm shooting target, self bow with out arrow cut. I just can't get it right, cause have to bend around the bow. Seems like you know what your talking about.
Yes sir, normally on a 30# bow you would need 700 or 800 spine especially for a self bow but you can make a 600 work with enough point weight and I’d say it’s going to need to be at least 250 grains maybe more especially if it’s grouping left.
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 thank you ✊just ordered some 200 grain tips.
All those arrows are really too short for me😢 That's why I shoot full length Black Eagle Deep impact arrows, I don't have a lot of choices with my 32"draw. But these are great shafts, tough as nails.
Ranch fairy has them
Could you help me with something? I'm after a stumping bow, something that doesn't break arrows easy. Thats all it needs to do, STUMP and NOT break the arrow. Just a roving bow.
Let's see, If I have a 35# at 28" and I draw 29" that makes it about 37#, right? Then, let's say I have an oversized 500 spine shaft to start with at 31.5", with a 150 grain, this would be too stiff?
Probably so, I would think you’d need a 600 at that length unless you run more point weight.
@@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 would a 700 cut at 29" with a 200 grain point be too weak then? For a 27.5" draw length. My draw is in fact 27.5 and not 29.
@@Cuisinenomade1 no sir it shouldn’t be too stiff actually should fly great 👍🏻
You misspelled traditional In your thumbnail
What kind of point weight would I need up front for an Arrow 29" 500 spine with 40g inserts? I'm shooting a 45lb Recurve.
I'm trying to work this stuff out myself.

Are you out of business?
Yes sir, unfortunately we had to close the bow shop for health risks with the Carbon and all, it was taking a very serious toll on us.
40lbs is like standard, light is like 20
I have a 36 lb at 26"recurve, what weight up front for 600 gold tips, and what's the shortest length I could cut them and still get an acceptable flight. I only draw 26". Thanks.
Hmm that’s a tricky one there lol, most bows in the 36# range with a 26” draw would require a 700 spine but I’d think you would be okay with a 600 as long as it’s not cut too short like maybe 28” or more and try to run at least 250 grains up front that should be fine for you but I’d definitely try bare shafting one of them to know what is best 👍🏻
See this is getting me. I have a 40lb recurve. If I shoot 500 spine arrows with more than 150gr on the tip, the tail points left like its weak. I shoot 400 spines better. I use Fast Flight string and have a 29" draw, but it shouldn't make that much of a difference.
I was wondering if my bow being cut past center is why? My arrows don't have to bend around the riser like on other bows. People tell me I should be using 600 spine arrows and there is just no way, they would slap the target sideways. My arrows are 30" and 32". If I go shorter then 30", the arrow tip hits my fingers when I draw back. I use the 30" arrows on my 45lb too.
