    Ants also farm aphids. The aphids secrete a sweet sticky dew like stuff the ants love, so they herd them, protect them whilst the little buggers (aphids) are munching on your leaves.

    Grits too. In the south, we eat grits for breakfast and then sprinkle it in the garden and on top of fire ant beds.
    I’ve seen a lot of folks say it won’t work but I’m 45 and my gran did it, I do it....and damn if the ant hill isn’t gone in a matter of days.
    Maybe it doesn’t kill them but they head out.

    Grow lavenders and when you prune them in late summer, chop the pruning and use it as mulch. If the ants house on the ground, it might take a year or two until they decide to move their home elsewhere using the lavender mulch, but it works for my rose bed.

    I usually use a mix of borax and peanut butter or borax and powdered sugar. Works every time. Or if you wanna take it to the next level use molten metal and pour it in the ant hole. Do that on the fire ants though and not on the raised beds lol

    And important fact that you might be missing. Especially on your egg plants? They’re not eating the leaves. Plants like eggplants tomatoes potatoes are all in the nightshade family. Ants are very clever and farm. That’s right they farm life stock. They carry place and protect several types of parasitic insects like aphids on two plants and vegetables. If you’re seeing ants on your plants. Look for insects too!I like your recommendation with the cream of wheat. But I’d like to know why or how that is effective on the chemical basis? Boric acid mixed in something sweet is also very effective.

      Perhaps it’s because of your specialized environment being in the desert. Because in less you have leaf cutter ants which are only in the rain forests. That is very unusual behavior for ants.Please take a video of this action if or when they do it again. Piling all that mulch up will make great nesting grounds for them. Wink wink

      Scott Riddle, yes there are ants that will attack and eat plants in the USA, it's rare to have a problem with them though. I'm surprised Jake is "anti ant" they're just as beneficial to the soil as worms, they're like worms if you have no ants in your soil, your soil is not healthy.

    Diatomaceous earth for ants. Just sprinkle on and around nest and property. Don't get wet.

  • @anactorslife3729
    @anactorslife3729 4 роки тому

    My diatomaceous earth rarely lasts more than a few days in Chicago. It rains so much I can't use it because when the ground is wet the earth turns to like a flour mixture and the ants crawl right over it. I also tried cayenne pepper and cinnamon and the ants did not seem bothered at all. Ugh! I refuse to apply pesticides so I'll try the cream of wheat. My ants here in the Midwest are typically very small black ones. Not sure what is eating my radish leaves or some of my kale varieties. Interestingly enough some of my plants and lettuces are untouched while others are bug magnets. One of these days I'll figure it out. Oh, and btw, ants LOVE my compost bin! The sneaky bastards found my kitchen scraps. Well, at least they're not in my garden, LOL.

      thats sad they killed your bird i guess the nests werent high enough or the environment wasnt right, i dont do killing i actually despise people who use killing as a solution, theres always a peaceful solution, but yea, theres exceptions, cause sometimes we dont get everything right because we are only animals, and we have to learn the hard way sometimes, i no i wouldnt have expected fire ants to do that to my birds, but then again if they did my sollution would be peaceful and would probably involve moving/improving/prevention, when i was a kid i tipped petrol on a nest and let it burn for hours, but that was more because i was raised a bit evil and couldnt see past my own selfish desires lol gotta have good role models or your gonna be a problem, true humbleness only comes through making selfish mistakes and meditation really, its not so much time that tells but experience in and learning from a natural and healthy environment, most people are deffinatly duds in this time i actually only know of msybe 2 or 3 other human beings on this planet personally that are really truely justified and humble, righteous human beings who have the intent of doing everything the most peaceful and right way possible lol we are the future tho reardless of the fact that we are being forced to become more humble due to what city people and meat eaters do to the environment and i couldnt be happier that our state of morality is finally evolving from barbaric to truely civilised and justified its about time, im glad i wasnt born 100 years ago and had to live through a time of little progression mentally, wortorn species if you will

      Cream of Wheat is a brand of farina, a type of breakfast porridge mix made from wheat semolina. It was first manufactured in the United States in 1893 by wheat millers in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Wikipedia

    Thank you, another great tip for our sweet peach tree trying to get a good start. Going to try wrapping the tree trunk up near (but still beneath) where the branches begin, with some stretch (flatting?) tape and paint a light layer of "Tree Tanglefoot" on the tape so the ants can't get beyond it. I am also going to put a jar or two of cream of wheat around the bottom of the tree, and some diatomaceous earth. We are fortunate to have many ladybugs, and we're going to plant some special herbs and flowers near the tree, to attract those wasps and lacewings. :-)
    P.S. I find some of the arguments going on in comments here somewhat ludicrous. Calling each other names and then talking about "saving the insects" because nature is "perfect." If nature were perfect women would all have perfect vaginal births, no mother would die, and no-one would die of insect bites (black widow, brown recluse) etc. etc. and snake bites. I think it's time to realize there is a line between being reasonable and just naive and unrealistic. Also, arguing with people and calling them sTUpiD is no more honorable than stepping on a bull ant with your big foot.

    Great video, Jake! We LOVE your videos. Fire ants are a problem. Thanks for posting!
    Question:
    Does Cream of Wheat work without the jar? Is the jar needed to keep the Cream of Wheat dry?
    We'll let the ants live in the ant lovers' yards, and surrounding 1000s of miles, however, fire ants are an epidemic in the south and we (and our quails) just want to enjoy a small part of our yard, our little orchard / garden, without suffering dozens of fire ant stings. Thanks again. :)

    Some species of ant queens can create hundreds of eggs a day. The mason jar “idea” is hilariously useless. The wood chip solution most likely works, but it sounds very situational to me, on top of the fact that one would be putting in an incredible amount of works just to get rid of a few harmless insects.

    Hi Thanks for the tips.
    Am from UK -
    (a) what is a Mason jar?
    (b) what is Cream of Wheat?
    They must be called by different names over here, never heard of them by those names.
    Just wondering. Thanks anyway

    • @veritywolfe960

      Jar is just a jam jar, cream of wheat is ready break, but it won't work because ants don't eat the stuff, they will try to take it back to the colony to feed larvae. Worker ants cannot actually eat the stuff they pick up.

      Gone with Plants if yours are that bad, you may want to try the mixing boric acid (borax) with sugar method as well. With this method they take it back to the hill & it kills the colony too. With the cream of wheat it just kills the drones that find it. Normally, I'm all for working with nature, but fire ants are an invasive species & bad for our ecosystem...

      Lainey Bug Thank you for that info, I will try it! Yes, fire ants are from the Devil himself.

    • @gabriellakadar

      Here in Toronto they are everywhere. It's impossible really to get rid of them because if you kill the colony nearby, nature abhors a vacuum and more will move in. The problem is they outcompete native ants.
      My neighbours had them crawling all over the place this year and they also had the best crop of cucumbers ever. So these ants are good at predating pest species.... although they also eat anything they can, so longterm I don't know what effect this will have on beneficials. So far so good though.
      I do appreciate the concern over their effect on native ants.

      gabriella kadar Fire ants in Toronto?? Wow, that shocks me. It has always been a southern issue for America because they originally came from Latin America by accidental import. I’m actually in the process of moving out of Texas because I can’t stand them anymore. I’ve been bitten so many times- the more I’m attacked, the worst my body reacts. So my family and I chose Washington state where there are no fire ants. That borders Canada, opposite side from you, I know, but I’m originally from Boston, we don’t have them there. My parents moved from Maine (they didn’t have them there either). How scary to learn they are up where you are!!

      Gone with Plants:
      These are European Fire Ants. globalnews.ca/news/1421066/what-are-european-fire-ants-and-how-to-get-rid-of-them/
      Rather extreme eh? Dump gallons of toxic liquid into soil? So much for organic gardening.....not.
      I've got an allotment garden that is close to a creek. This spring was the first time I saw these ants, so that's why I don't know what longterm effect they'll have. The fact they kept the plants clean of cucumber beetle larvae, cabbage butterfly caterpillars, potato beetle larvae, etc. was fine by me. The fact they wanted to farm aphids was not okay but easily remedied. The zucchini plants were totally crawled all over by the ants. Initially I had no idea what was the attraction. Then I stopped bothering monitoring for cucumber beetle eggs because I figured out the ants were doing the job for me. I literally had not a single potato beetle larva! Amazing how efficient they are but probably just as efficient at eating beneficial insects as well. They don't seem to have any impact on Flea Beetles. :(
      I let last year's parsley go to flower and it attracted hundreds of Red Soldier Beetles. They lay their eggs in the soil and their larvae eat other critters in the soil so maybe they will do some work on the flea beetle larvae. Who knows? I'm just trying to create a mini-ecosystem plus grow vegetables. So far, so good.
      We had a super wet spring and early summer so the ants were coming up to get away from being drowned. I do 'no dig/compost/cover crop/mulch' and thought maybe this is making life more attractive to them. But neighbours who do all that double digging nonsense also had them so it's not a matter of how a person cultivates. These ants move their nests around. Initially I had two nests. Then by August I had one nest 20 feet from its original location. By end of September there was no ant activity so I have no idea if they decided to migrate further. I'll find out next year.
      And WOWZERS! The sting is super painful and then itches for days.
      You need to check on line sources about where these ants have managed to become established. They are in British Columbia, eventually you'll get them in Washington state if you don't already have them.

      yes I ave used it on ants I had here in ElPaso it works the same way as the cream of wheat.I didn't use a mason Jar I just covered the ant mound opening with it .It has to do with the process it goes through to create the Hominy before being ground into grits.To learn more about the process check out this link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hominy .The chemical makeup of the corn is changed to a state that the ants cant digest

    Best thing for eggplants, ants. I immensely dislike eggplant. Why do you want the ants to explode? When that happens you only kill 1 ant. Give them something to take back to the nest and kill lots. like Borax, sugar,and honey (that coats the Borax and then the explosion occurs in the nest.).

    • @ChineseAndFilipinoMartialArts
      @ChineseAndFilipinoMartialArts 7 років тому +13

      Dragonetta I said exploding them and taking joy from it, not protecting your plants. Vegans always talk about animal cruelty as their motivation so I don't see how ants exploding isn't cruel as well. Hardly stupid.

    • @ChineseAndFilipinoMartialArts
      @ChineseAndFilipinoMartialArts 7 років тому +9

      Dragonetta LOL wow another self-righteous vegan. This is not a question of IQ I can assure you I am well-educated. By your example if I give you a piece of cake and you eat it and explode it's your fault is it? I am not questioning anything other than Jake laughing at the ants exploding which is cruel. Given how much you vegans natter on about cruelty it seemed surprising. That's it. Get off your pedastool you are exposing your low level emotionally driven IQ more than anything else.

    • @ChineseAndFilipinoMartialArts

      Dragonetta Wow this has really evoked a lot of passion from you. As if I am getting emo about it LOL you're the one blowing your lid over it. It is highly likely you are vegan or are you hiding in the closet? Get over it I honestly don't care about it that much so stop wasting your valuable 'IQ' on it. Use that big brain of yours to cure cancer or something instead of arguing about ants. You need to get laid or something you're too aggressive.

      Dragonetta I feel exactly the same I don't think your little diatribe is really worth much. It's just insults about intelligence which don't really bother me. This has grown tiresome now anyway so have a nice life.

      Dragonetta LOL at you keep editing your replies, you're really into this aren't you? Btw only huge DOUCHEBAGS use block capitals to make their point. Yeah I really like Jake and what he does, I am actually a fan. Logical people always say never argue with a feminist or a vegan. This argument proves why. Like I said, I don't even know you so I seriously don't care that much how OFFENDED (lol) you are by my original post. I will leave it there as this will just go on and on. Put that passion to better use.

    i don't have the type of ants that eat plants. wow that's a thing?
    the thing i don't like about ants in my garden is they protect and milk the aphids so if i see a lot of ants i know why. i use neem oil on the aphids and a mixture of borax and sugar on the ants. works like a charm.
