True story I'll remember for the rest of my life: I was living in rural Japan when this was posted. I was feeling so sad and alone during the holidays because I was spending them alone again for the fourth year in a row. I tried to make the season special despite having no friends or family to celebrate with, so I got up early on Christmas Day morning, picked up some to-go McDonald's pancakes, and went to the local beach to have a very chilly breakfast picnic by myself. After I finished eating my food and staring sadly at the ocean, I got back into my car to go home. I plugged in my phone before heading out because I wanted to listen to a little holiday music on the way back. I was recommended this video and I never clicked anything faster in my life. When I still lived in my home country, my brother and I used to listen to lots of these silly WaLuigi song covers together because we thought the voices were just hilarious and it drove everyone else around us insane. We would literally play and sing the "Wallelujah Chorus" over and over and over again until our poor mother was on the brink of madness🤣 I put this song on repeat using the UA-cam playback settings and then proceeded to drive around the island for hours that day. I laughed and cried so hard. It was both horrible and wonderful. I had never felt so alone in my life, but somehow still never so close to home. No matter where you are in the world, I guess it's always WaLuigi Time somewhere🥹
Fun Fact: At the time it was written, in 1944, the lyrics had vastly different connotations. There it was more about a woman blaming her drink (which probably wasn't alcoholic) for being out late, hence the "What's in this drink?" line, which was at the time basically short-hand for "I may or may not be drunk, whatever faux-pas happens, it's the alcohol talking, and I can't be blamed", meanwhile her intent to leave is more about her saving face "What will the people think? But, oh well...", because, again, 40s sensibilities. The past is a different country. The whole "Rape" and "Potential Drugging" interpretations were made up much later in the 2000s. In isolation the Lyrics are kinda messed up and creepy, but context kinda makes it funny, at least to me.
@@goliathe7654 The song would also switch roles, too. Having a man sing the "mouse" lines (as described) makes you realize it's really dumb to cloud your intent when you wanted to say yes. Blaming society (or family) isn't healthy so when you have the "stronger" of the two put in that position, it's meant to give you, the listener, the feeling that maybe society shouldn't judge women for indulging in a relationship... or people in general. Clear intent is always best and having society make you feel obligated you should say no or "at least refuse once" before saying yes... isn't healthy for anyone.
