@maryhuffman4458 Thanks, I didn't even notice that, but I replayed it & caught that. When I was a child, my father taught me the words & we would sing it together. Those were the days when a child danced with their parent, by placing her feet on his shoes. I thought I was the world's greatest dancer. If I remember correctly, the singer's name was Buddy Clark. I've often wondered if children still do this.
I think the second guy is Comedian Red Skelton.. so funny...
The fact that they managed to do this in primarily long takes and get everything right, act well, and sing perfectly is brilliant

Okay to clear it up for the people confused about the song, they are both thinking of ways to let her stay at his, since it was frowned upon in society to stay at a mans/partner’s house if you were unmarried. This song was about fighting the social norms of that time period.
“Say whats in this drink?” It isn’t about drugging the drink, its a saying/phrase meaning ‘excuse my behaviour/blame it on the alcohol’. There is nothing creepy about this song. The original songwriter wrote it for his wife and preformed it with her! Truly a beautiful story of love!
Enjoy the song! ❤️

Sang this in high school choir back when I was a freshman and not once thought that the song had anything to do with sexual harassment. At the school's winter concert, my brother and I did duets with two girls while the rest of the choir sang behind us. The girl I sang with had such a voice. She's been dead almost 10 years after suffering a seizure. RIP Becca Evenson, I hope you're singing with the angels. 😞
Damn…… that got dark quick
Well luckily it doesnt relate to sexual harassment, they both like eachother, except in both situations the spouses are worried about what the women's parents would think.

You'd really think the eye of outrage would instead be focusing in on the tale of a woman who wants to express her sexuality but is restrained by the judgements that society will make against an unmarried woman staying the night at her boyfriend's house (in the 40s).
Well put 🙂
The songwriter wrote this for his wife
I wouldn't mind a handsome guy in a suit to pine for me lol
That’s not how consent works
It makes me so sad that folks these days are making this song more than what it is. it's just fun and flirtatious. As i said in a response to a comment, my parents sang this together every christmas, as my mom played piano, when i was a child. it triggers childhood memories for me, and now that my mom has passed, it makes me quite emotional.
You can't worry about what idiots say. This is a romantic scene, a song and dance depiction of the social dance between a couple. She doesn't want to leave, but she can't just appear eager to stay either.
First time I am hearing this song. Have NO idea what people are saying about it. What are people saying about it, that causes you to object to their comments?
@@juniorh9238 the outrage mob decided it is song promoting date rape
I love it. It was back when people did flirt and date, not jump in the sack with less thought than what shirt you're going to wear.
Back when intimacy meant something
@@juniorh9238 People are implying this Christmas song is about getting a girl drunk, forcing her to stay with social pressure and do something sexual beyond what she feels comfortable with. I don't feel that way about this song. I'm just replying to a comment you wrote a month ago. Happy Holidays!🎀
A lot of controversy has arose over this song because people simply don't understand the culture difference back then.
It was considered very inappropriate for people who aren't married or dating to spend a lot of time together (for whatever reason).
All that aside, fantastic song, honestly
also, a man made this song so him and his wife can sing it at parties
I agree GREAT SONG
People ate just retarded.
Id never heard of this song until libs turned it into some big controversy as if it's always been America's favorite song and now it's sending a horrible message reflecting the awful values of the US. Just like with blackface; no one knew what it was til libs went nuts then it turned out they were the only ones wearing it!
Yea like so many things no one understands nuance and the culture at the time
@@kurtpunchesthings2411 tbf I've only ever heard the modern version with Bublé, which is just straight singing it. I wasn't even aware of the history of it being from a romcom. Even the one music video I've seen takes the modern angle of it, even involving a prison cage falling down as if one of them is being trapped. Having watched this with the body language and softer singing I can somewhat see the other angle as well, but out of context with the words alone it does feel a tiny bit creepy with modern perspectives.

The simple detail that points at that this is not a "hidden" sexual harassment motive is that in the end they both agree that "it's cold outside".
i agree
it looks kind of cute when you see the woman or even the man convincing the other to stay.
Manipulation probably?
Dragon Butts no fucking no. She sits and drink with him. She likes his company. I can't argue that obviously older movies had way too many stereotypes in them. Of course, cause it is just a reflection of the society. But in this movie, i strongly believe it's not like that. First of all, both sexes try to persuade the other person to stay with them. Then, their excuses are just to "play hard to get". I'm not a fan of it not to hide that, but it's not harmful. It isn't promoting sth criminal
Agreed--the end of the song clearly shows that she's interested, too.
Because idiots exist, though, I feel like I have to point out that in the real world, if she says "The answer is no," THEN THE ANSWER IS FUCKING NO!

@benironside1264 So cynical. Yes there was a time when there was innocence. I'm sorry you missed it. Merry Christmas.
I find the song romantic, not the video. Too much pushiness is a huge turnoff and she doesn't look into it. She should get outta there lol.
@@SummerSong.17 I don’t know. how far after the mass genocide of world war 2 was this? Did abuse and rape still exist? They aren’t just standards of today. On the flip side just look at how delicate everyone is today who are outraged and upset over anything, so I think to be honest we’re probably both right with certain things that were more innocent and certain things that weren’t. We would be wrong to say that the human race has been innocent at any point though.. I do genuinely wish you a merry and none cynical Christmas ❤️
@benironside1264
What a tender reply and well received. Mankind is not "innocent" for sure. I grew up in a time not without sin, but through grace alone. There used to be more respect in my day. My heart breaks for Israel. For the sake of the Gentiles, they too, have paid a great price. One day, Jesus will save All of Israel. For today, I thank God for His love and mercy. Christmas is commercialized, even by songs like we have commented on. This is the most scared event to have happened for all of mankind. May the Lord bless you and your home. You know what is happening in a deeply spiritual way. I am as well. Let's hold each other's hands in a sense and praise our King. We did not kill Him, but He freely laid His life down so all who call on Him can live with Him in eternity. Merry Christmas and the peace and joy of this season be with you today and all year long. This is what Christmas is all about.

FYI, the song is not about rape. The song, at the time was regarded as pro-woman's liberation because she wants to stay, and does so in the end. Her argument for leaving encompasses all of the reasons that society tells her she should not stay, which amounts to a woman being vilified for her sexuality.
+SepherStar Seem so obvious. Millenials used to seem smart, now they look like dumbasses, trying to ruin this song.
Tau Errol Resentment is not good for your health and millenials have done nothing wrong. Quite the contrary, millenials have had to come of age in an economy wracked by recessions they didn't cause, where middle aged adults occupied many of the positions that teens and young adults have historically used to get on their feet in life, and employers want experience but don't want to train, and where it's impossible to work your way through college, and you need a $100,000 degree for a $34,000 per year job with no job stability. No generation before them in this country has had to attempt to forge a life in such impossible conditions.
SepherStar In fairness, Gen Xers dealt with the "Experience vs Degree plus Certification plus Continual Education" Catch 22 first. I hear stories of people getting their CPAs back in the 60's without any of that other than the test. So yeah Boomers and prior generations did have a pretty cushy run. But I listen to these Millenials and they talk about "Leave it to Beaver" as if it were the new Star Wars movie, and they are sad because they found the American Dream the same way we Xers did, just a Dream, not real, and neither is Beaverville or Pleasantville.
+SepherStar "say what's in this drink?"

How can people be so dense to not realise this song was written in the 40s about two lovers and the female insisting she should go home because people might gossip but she really wants to stay but social mores are holding her back.
David Rivera 😂 I love it
Also, the exact same thing also happens with a women doing exactly the same to man in this clip. In other words, it's nothing bad, it's not something against females, and it's just a bit of fun--on both sides.
Question: how can we tell the difference?
This movie was definitely among the most controversial of the time for that reason (what likely saved it though is that it's never revealed what happened afterwards, meaning she could have slept on the couch and he in the bedroom, making this just barely acceptable). There was actually another film released two years later that makes even this look tame: Captain Horatio Hornblower. That 1951 film was EXPLOSIVELY controversial because it appeared to positively portray an adulterous romantic relationship between the Captain and his aristocrat passenger, Lady Barbara (a fictional family member of the Duke of Wellington). The film bent the rules by later revealing that it TECHNICALLY WASN'T adultery because the Captain's wife had in fact died during his voyage absence and apparently before the affair began. After Lady Barbara's post-voyage arranged marriage ends due to her husband being killed in combat, she comes to the Captain's house in Britain with a big "naughty" smile on her face and it's implied their relationship became a full on love story or marriage. Absolutely shocking for the 50s.

Red Skelton, the comedian - loved this. If the snow was up to their knees, they probably couldn't go that far anyhow.
this song was about the change in society and controlment. she wanted to stay also hence the line “break this spell” to suggest that she wish she could stay but she felt she couldn’t after how everyone would treat her. works both ways with the female wanting the male to stay also.
All politics aside
This is some amazing choreography
Truuue. As fluid as a 1900's cartoon.
Fantastic
@RJ Thank you!
FOR REAL
RIGHT
In context, there is nothing wrong with this song
1. The hesitation to stay by the woman in the first part, and the man in the second part, is mostly social commentary on societal norms on how men and women should behave with regards to premarital sex. The concern is not with spending the night with the lover, but how it would be perceived by society
2. “what’s in this drink” does not mean the drink has drugs in it. It was an idiom common at the time that implied “this is a strong drink” or “I feel a bit buzzed.” In this case, it could even mean that “l have strong feelings for you but I’m blaming the drink”
It’s easy to cherry pick a few words and use them out of context and twist them to mean what you want them to mean. It’s particularly telling how those objecting to this song fail to even mention the reversed roles of the second part.
Okay, but back then, if she really didn't want to be there, how would one tell?
I ought to say no, no, no ( but I'm not gonna because I really wanna be here)
Odysseus youre exactly right
when she says "the answer is *_no_*" SJWs seem to hold on to this one in particular, i guess. in their infinite many wrinkles they seem to think this implies the song should cut off here, to silence, or something. and while he does keep removing her hat and coat, touches her thigh, etc(The most risque part of the scene for back then) you can see he draws the line at forcing; it looks to me like he wouldn't dream of it, letting her pull away at every opportunity but trying to reel her back in. he's just trying to convince a girl he has feeling for, that he believes has feelings for him, to stay with him. I have a feeling if she really set her foot down, it'd be different.
The first one, the way they rest at the end, in conclusion, very much appears as though he succeeded in convincing her to stay. She, smilingly, gently, sits down with him again. No forcing here.
The SECOND example ends more like rape than the first, with the man being unable to escape from the girl who is in _His fucking house._ PUSHING HIM ONTO A COUCH AND TURNING OFF A LIGHT. He even has an almost uncomfortable look: "What will this do to my reputation...." But you won't see SJW's raising a stink about it. because apparently women can't rape.
Exactly. This was written in an era where premarital sex was NOT okay. This song is entirely a little jokey couple.,it’s not as big of a deal as people imply and it’s a traditional song that shouldn’t be taken down from a bunch of idiots getting offended.
Absolutely love these versions!
It's an achievement for humanity that the song has changed connotation over the years. From a song about breaking social expectations to spend a little more time with a lover to being about pressuring someone to stay. The lines about what everyone might think of staying away so long are completely lost on the latest generations and that's a great thing.

They are just playfully flirting with each other. It's sad that people can no longer tell the difference between flirting and harassment.
When they ban MJ's thriller saying it's harassment i'm outta here
If that ever happens im just gonna start goin out of my way to trigger as many people as I can. Stupid sjws. They the reason we cant have nice things
When I hug my friends, it's gentle and personal. Don't want to be pawed and won't do it either. I am a survivor. Won't ever let ppl get away with creepiness. My friends hug stronger than I do and that's okay bc I know they are good ppl. Playful is ok.
I wish it were directed playfully. As it is he’s badgering her and taking her coat off constantly. It’s even worse in the gender reversal part at the end. In both, they want to leave, they look angry! How is that flirty? So yeah, it reads as harassment even in this context. If they laughed or smiled each time their clothes were taken off them then fine, but they don’t. They look angry, the guy even leaves in the second one and returns only because he has the wrong coat on. I’m not sure most people can see harassment due to scenes in films like this.
I thought the same, till I watched the video. The first couple its clear that the woman is not flirting. The second one less so since it implies that they are already sleeping with each other in the end, but it certainly looked like she was harassing him throughout most of it.

Really I am in love with the jacket move of Betty Garret and Red Skelton during the "What's the sense in hurting my pride" line
It's like this in all movies from the fifties
anyone know any other ones like this?

Dislike for the edit
People read way too much into a simple song than what there is. Remember, this song was written in the 40s. It's a simple flirtation song. Nothing more. Stop reading something into it that isn't there.
Instant Classic 🎄🤶🧑🎄
The funny thing is I don't see any comments about this being rapey. I only see people complaining about other people complaining that it's rapey.
They're at the bottom, like, the very bottom of the comments section.
It's rapey.
Adrianna Quinones it’s probably because they A: don’t get any likes and B: aren’t saying it in YT comments
Ohh they were there not anymore
It was on a news page
I think people are missing the point of this song. The girl wants to stay, but she's worried about how it will be perceived socially. The guy is basically telling her to screw society because they both know what they want. In the end she finally decides to take action on what she personally wants instead of concerning herself with societal norms.
That's why the person who is being convinced talks about what their family will think, not because they don't want to stay, but because they're worried about the societal implications.
that's why the line is "I really should say no." they don't WANT to say no, but they feel that they SHOULD because that's what society wants them to do.
It's literally as simple as that.
Yes, you are right. This was 1949 and girls were frowned upon if they spent the night with a guy. She really wants to stay, but she is worried what people will think about her.
I agree. When I was younger this was one of my favorite Christmas songs and that’s all I perceived it as. I think some people just read too much into it..
@Anonymous Exactly right. And as for the "What's in this drink" line, there are many reasons why a woman (or a man, for that matter) might ask what is in a drink that have nothing to do with date rape drugs, such as it being one he/she isn't familiar with. And at the time the song was written, "What's in this drink" was a common joke in movies: people would drink something and then try to blame their behavior on said drink--the joke, however, is that nothing different was in the drink at all.
Anonymous ugh yes thank you, THIS,fuck those stupid ass feminist social justice warriors
Not one women alive today could survive in the 40s. From now on, you're not allowed to say yes to sex, like ever. Nor are you allowed to have sleep overs. And if you do, your family will literally disown you.
Gtfo. Really the reality of this song is more horrifying then it being miss understood as a date rape song. Oh. And congrats you now only have 3 career choices, nurse teacher, secretary. Or you can be waitress. There's also no shelters for women. So don't even think about leaving your abusive husband. Or getting a divorce. Or an abortion. You also can't run for an elected office. Enjoy.
Merry Christmas
💕 But baby it's cold outside, One of my favorite Christmas songs..💕
Without CGI the actors that have talent are so much easier to recognIze. You can immediately tell that these 4 actors are amazing at what they do.
They say it has rapist intent, but
I swear the girl looks more like "I want to but i shouldn't, what would the family think?"
While I do agree saying the OG has... "rapist intent" is a little over the edge, what most people who are against the song think should be censored is the "she's saying no but she actually means yes." Which, not saying I'm totally with the 'new version', but I can see what people are trying to talk about. Not just some "no means no" crap, which is now a joke more than anything, but something that is actually still happening.
@@crim899 yeah but these people who want it censored think she's meaning no, but she really isnt.
All it is IS just a song about cute winter themed flirting. People nowadays are just so god damn paranoid that they think a christmas song from a 40s romcom is a "rapist song"
@@crim899 Yes, but the point is this particular woman actually _did_ mean 'Yes'. Caramel's interpretation is accurate. It's two people who want it but one of them is concerned about people's opinions on them will change afterwards. That's the whole point of the scene.
@@maniakk3563 I never said she is/isn't, I was stating what I thought people might be worried about. And yes, this day and age are more worried about rape/sexual assault, but that doesn't mean every person out there is going to cry rape if you open the door for them.
@@TheMartyandy Yup, see above. The thing is that in everyday life most people are meaning "no." And that's what people are worried about; the fact that people might take it the wrong way. In context, it's fine. But, taking away the that they both want to (and the fact that people nowadays still play "hard to get" like idiots), it seems like she doesn't want to stay and that he's basically forcing her to stay.
That move at the end blew my mind. Man, that chick is smooth.
Mother Russia i’m dead lmfao
I love this!
Such romantic... My teacher made us watch this clip back in school and sing it
2:57 *drinks from the flower vase* “what’s in this drink?” XD
😂😂😂😂😂
I just relieze that!! 😂😂😂
Oh my goodness, their voices are so sweet and it's just so adorable I cannot get over this. And with the holidays around the corner and the cold weather it's just making it ever so warmer.
Well, up here in Wisconsin, it's already snowy and freezing. This song does make me feel warm, nonetheless. ;-)
it doesn't have to tf.
I absolutely love her dress the sparkling and the colors it meshes well
This is such a cute song, and very playful. It’s been a Christmas favorite since I was a child.
I’ve always thought of “say what’s in this drink?” as a reference to the spell of love she feels coming over her. It’s a flirtatious lyric.
Forrest Deardorff he looks at the plant and smells of referencing he’s been roofied actually
@@rayrayjoelle2749 u know you are 100% wrong about what that means whats in this drink it doesn't mean someone put drugs in the drink she was making excuses so she can stay the daughter of the two people that wrote the song she said its not a rap song she said thats how people flirt in them days when two people liked or was in love so they tried make up excuses not to leave because they was in love with each other
Derrick Langford yes, that’s the other argument. Listen to the original version, it’s more obvious as to the flirtatious intent of the lyric
"Yer seester weel be suspeeecious"
Gawrsh yer leeps look deelishous
It sounds like Miranda Sings XD
Bacon&Pizza&IceCream HA!
How is it supposed to sound?
😂😂😂 yooooo I'm dying rn!!! Lololol
still the best flirtatious song from classic
The radio station that banned this song, please look into the lyrics of the top modern/ pop/hip hop songs that you kept repeating
Edit: wtf I randomly posted this a week ago then I came back with like 10k likes 😅 well mum I did it, this is my legacy now lol
It's quite a fascinating cultural study, actually. The culture at the time was that women couldn't consent to casual sex: they needed some plausible way to convince others (and perhaps even themselves) that they were forced/talked into it. And a culture in which women can't give a clear Yes is also a culture in which there's no way to give a clear No (cf. Mr Collins and Elizabeth Bennett).
Do they play rap songs? Apparently not..
@Black Knight Fool It was a gay black transgender Mexican here illegally that complained. It wanted Nancy to dance with it.
Dayum take that L XD
The radio station that banned the song doesn't play hip hop....... This is your own at work
Did the people complaining about this song not watch 3 minutes in when the woman wants the man to stay?
They will have only listened to the radio version not bothering to try to find out the context of BOTH versions of the song.
Exactly
Isnt it rape either way?
BearMalice it has no relation what so ever cause the first one the woman actually want to stay but can’t cause she will be the talk of the town and not be respected. This song is from the 40’s where woman can’t even checking out men and men can’t do the same cause it will cause gossip also (in the second) the guy doesn’t want the girl to be the gossip that’s why he says that he has to go.
I remember something along the line : someone should but that doesn’t mean they would
Its bi-rapey
Given the male-on-female duet is a widely known Christmas song, I am surprised the female-on-male duet was never popularized, 2:28. It would've been fun to hear what singers would do with this!
Favorite Christmas song
I am playing this song SO much more than ever before. Really loving it.
Me too haha I sing it in stores and relish in the glares I get from the offended!! 😂😂
I have been wanting to hear it ever since I heard about the controversy, John Logsdon. We can't lose our culture to these idiots.
Yes, many people had never heard of this song before the censor-squad brought it to our attention. A playful flirt.
@@alanmonrovia I hope it enjoys a revival.
@Barack Obabykiller 😂🤣😂🤣 Thanks!
The "what's in this drink?" line was a popular joke in the forties. It didn't mean then what it does now. Get over it ya sensitive Sallies
Yes it did -- because "slipped her a mickey" comes from 1896-1903 period, & was a published term in 1915(in the OED), 12 years after his conviction; the OED documents words actually being used by more than just a couple people. Slipping knockout drugs into a drink was 5 decades old by the '40s. . .
@@NatandGeorge That doesn't impact my point; the term was most commonly, and obviously in this case, used as a joke.
Areyouokayannie but how is implying that he drugged her a joke??
It's supposed to mean the drink is strong
@@backtothegayshit3570 It was the forties. Humour was different than it is now. You think The Simpsons would have been funny 70 years ago?
This is still iconic
Always loved this song. And Ricardo Montalban - SO handsome!
Women and man used to dress so beautiful and stylish back in that time !
